Abstract:Abstract While human beings generally act prosocially towards one another — contra a Hobbesian “war of all against all” — this basic social courtesy tends not to be extended to our relations with the more-than-human world. Educational philosophy is largely grounded in a worldview that privileges human-centered conceptions of the self, valuing its own opinions with little regard for the ecological realities undergirding it. This hyper-separation from the ‘society of all beings’ is a foundational cause of our current ecological crises. In this paper, we develop an ecosocial philosophy of education (ESPE) based on the idea of an ecological self. We aspire to consolidate voices from deep ecology and ecofeminism for conceptualizing education in terms of being responsible to and for, a complex web of interdependent relations among human and more-than-human beings. By analyzing the notion of opinions in light of Gilles Deleuze’s critique of the ‘dogmatic image of thought,’ we formulate three aspects of ESPE capable of supporting an ecological as opposed to an egoistic conception of the self: (i) rather than dealing with fixed concepts, ESPE supports adaptable and flexible boundaries between the self and the world; (ii) rather than fixating on correct answers, ESPE focuses on real-life problems shifting our concern from the self to the world; and (iii) rather than supporting arrogance, EPSE cultivates an epistemic humility grounded in our ecological embeddedness in the world. These approaches seek to enable an education that cultivates a sense of self that is less caught up with arbitrary, egoistic opinions of the self and more attuned to the ecological realities constituting our collective life-worlds.

Dewey versus ‘Dewey’ on democracy and education

Abstract:In the literature on citizenship education, frequent references are made to Dewey. However, educationalists do not always interpret him correctly. To provide some counterbalance, I explain Dewey’s views on education and democracy. I base this, not only on ‘ Democracy and Education’, but also on 17 articles that Dewey wrote after ‘ Democracy and Education’, and on his ‘ Ethics’ and two earlier works, frequently cited by educationalists: ‘ Ethical Principles Underlying Education’ and ‘ School and Society’. According to Dewey, democracy and education are two sides of the same coin. Both involve and foster self-determination, self-development and participating in the common good, enlightened by intelligent understanding and scientific spirit. At the present, it is customary to define democratic citizenship education primarily in terms of social and moral learning, sometimes as though it can be distinguished from academic learning, as something extra besides learning subject matter. When such an approach is attributed to Dewey, as it often is, this is unwarranted.

Abstract:Abstract As a collective organized to address the education implications of calls for public health engagement on the ecological determinants of health, we, the Ecological Determinants Group on Education (cpha.ca/EDGE), urge the health community to properly understand and address the importance of the ecological determinants of the public’s health, consistent with long-standing calls from many quarters—including Indigenous communities—and as part of an eco-social approach to public health education, research and practice. Educational approaches will determine how well we will be equipped to understand and respond to the rapid changes occurring for the living systems on which all life—including human life—depends. We revisit findings from the Canadian Public Health Association’s discussion paper on ‘ Global Change and Public Health: Addressing the Ecological Determinants of Health ’, and argue that an intentionally eco-social approach to education is needed to better support the health sector’s role in protecting and promoting health, preventing disease and injury, and reducing health inequities. We call for a proactive approach, ensuring that the ecological determinants of health become integral to public health education, practice, policy, and research, as a key part of wider societal shifts required to foster a healthy, just, and ecologically sustainable future.

Abstract:The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Volume 705, Issue 1, Page 24-38, January 2023. After being overlooked in major education debates and policy initiatives for decades, civic education has recently become the topic of highly polarized debates and legislative battles over what and how we should be teaching our young people about the nation's history. How should racial injustice be discussed in schools? Are schools indoctrinating students? In a robust democracy, controversy about what students should learn is appropriate and desirable, but some of the rhetoric that has dominated the recent discussions violates the deliberative norms that schools should help students to develop. At a time when the public should be carefully deliberating how to educate students, civic education is instead being used instrumentally to win political contests. I present one approach to facing this challenge—the Educating for American Democracy project. This project is not the conclusive answer to the question, "What should we teach?" but rather an attempt to model deliberative values, and I show that it offers important lessons for people and institutions who are attempting to address matters of curricular content.

Abstract:The growth of ecological thought is receiving more attention in the twenty-first century. A human being should take care of nature rather than explaining how to treat it. Such compassion ought to be taught to all students as a universal principle in education. The ecological-discursive paradigm is still a challenge in education, nevertheless. As a result, the paper's goal is to analyze it as a sophisticated educational philosophy method. The ecological-discursive paradigm is considered in the study as having environmental anthropology as its methodological foundation. Environmental ethnicity is examined through ecological culture. The paper highlights that modifying an epistemological model is necessary for the development of ecological thinking. Therefore, a person's cognition should be focused on ideals rather than facts and skills. The paper emphasizes the concept of value-based diagnostic cognition. The first phase in the development of the ecological-discursive paradigm is its growth in the educational process.

Abstract:In this symposium, attention is primarily focused on ethics education in public administration programs in colleges and universities. We argue that teaching ethics should be not only limited to specific ethics courses in higher education nor just embedded as an element in various core courses in public administration programs, but also anchored in a thoughtful K-12 curriculum that relates ethics to issues of civility, civics, social justice, and understanding the position and role of government in democratic political systems. Most recently, the Educating for American Democracy (2021) has developed such a K-12 program. While this article will focus on the American context, the ideas presented about a continuous ethics education from elementary school up to college are relevant and important to all democracies.

Abstract:Public education is not just a way to organise and fund education. It is also the expression of a particular ideal about education and of a particular way to conceive of the relationship between education and society. The ideal of public education sees education as an important dimension of the common good and as an important institution in securing the common good. The common good is never what individuals or particular groups want or desire, but always reaches beyond such particular desires towards that which societies as a whole should consider as desirable. This does, of course, put the common good in tension with the desires of individuals and groups. Neo-liberal modes of governance have, over the past decades, put this particular educational set up under pressure and have, according to some, eroded the very idea of the common good. This set of contributions reflects on this state of affairs, partly through an exploration of the idea of publicness itself – how it can be rearticulated and regained – and partly through reflections on the current state of education in the 'north' and the 'south.'

Abstract:This article reviews four bodies of research that shed light on how to promote active care for the environment in children and youth: research on sources of proenvironmental behavior, socialization for democratic skills and values, the development of a personal sense of competence, and the development of collective competence. The article begins with an overview of studies of formative childhood experiences reported by environmental activists and educators, followed by correlational and experimental studies with young people regarding factors associated with their taking action for the environment. Because behaviors with the largest potential benefits for the environment require political engagement, the article also reviews experiences associated with young people’s interest and engagement in public issues. Action for the environment in the home or in public arena like schools and communities requires a personal sense of competence and a sense of collective competence, or confidence in one’s ability to achieve goals by working with a group. Therefore experiences that promote the development of these assets are summarized as well. The conclusion compares major findings in these different fields and discusses implications for environmental educators.

Abstract:Radicalization and anti-democratic trends, even at the very local level, have Europe-wide implications, threatening the stability of the European Union and its fundamental values. Hence, the protection, promotion and anchoring of democratic values can only be tackled in a joint effort. This is especially young people who are socially excluded and disadvantaged show a higher risk of violent and political radicalization in all countries. In the context of political education approaches, it is essential to think of educational programs that could increase commitment, resonance, and participation among this particular social group of young people in the context of a civil society. Taking the project 'European Learning Environment Formats for Citizenship and Democracy' (ELEF) as an example, this chapter aims at presenting an education theoretical classification as well as an approach suggesting how to react to societal challenges with the help of educational formats.

Abstract:The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Volume 705, Issue 1, Page 39-52, January 2023. American elites' continuing descent into polarization and the ongoing disintegration of civic culture and institutions highlight the need for educational leaders to learn from national consensus efforts in civics reform that have been forged by experts from the center left and center right. From a conservative perspective, this requires center-left colleagues to recognize the drawbacks of prioritizing civic engagement over civic education, the latter encompassing fundamental knowledge and civic virtues. The recent study Educating for American Democracy provides a balanced view of a national consensus framework for improvements that can be undertaken by states and localities, emphasizes civic knowledge and civic virtues as the foundation of informed participation, and features Tocqueville's concept of "reflective patriotism" as indispensable to a healthy American constitutional democracy. I argue that if American elites do not invest in such preparation for informed, committed citizenship, we risk the kind of self-inflicted crisis that Lincoln addressed in 1838 when he warned of an impending national "suicide."

Abstract:The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Volume 705, Issue 1, Page 7-15, January 2023. This volume features frontiers of scholarship in the political, social, and behavioral sciences that are advancing civic education. The volume begins with an analysis of recent efforts to create a shared agenda for civic learning against a backdrop of politicization in education. Additional articles provide theoretical and empirical support for the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for students to become engaged civic actors and problem solvers; other contributions offer illustrations of civic learning in action. A cross-cutting theme is the role that cultural contexts and environments play in helping to ensure meaningful student learning in the United States' multiethnic democracy. The volume concludes with recommendations for research, policy, and practice that can further advance a type of civic education that invigorates and preserves our democratic traditions and prepares students to address the political, socioeconomic, and ecological challenges that loom ever larger on the horizon.

Abstract:In this article, the work of John Dewey is recontextualised and proposed as a basis for contemporary early childhood education for sustainability (ECEfS). Five key themes are explored: experiential learning; curiosity and critical thinking; children’s experiences in nature; democracy and participation and classroom as community. In each case, claims are made through aligning the work of Dewey with exemplars from current early childhood practice. The focus is reflection upon the educator as facilitator of dynamic interactions between the learner and her/his experiences, fostering individual growth, influencing social change and, thus, creating possibilities for implementation of ECEfS within early years classrooms.

Abstract:This paper explores relationships between environment and education after the Covid-19 pandemic through the lens of philosophy of education in a new key developed by Michael Peters and the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia (PESA). The paper is collectively written by 15 authors who responded to the question: Who remembers Greta Thunberg? Their answers are classified into four main themes and corresponding sections. The first section, 'As we bake the earth, let's try and bake it from scratch', gathers wider philosophical considerations about the intersection between environment, education, and the pandemic. The second section, 'Bump in the road or a catalyst for structural change?', looks more closely into issues pertaining to education. The third section, 'If you choose to fail us, we will never forgive you', focuses to Greta Thunberg's messages and their responses. The last section, 'Towards a new (educational) normal', explores future scenarios and develops recommendations for critical emancipatory action. The concluding part brings these insights together, showing that resulting synergy between the answers offers much more then the sum of articles' parts. With its ethos of collectivity, interconnectedness, and solidarity, philosophy of education in a new key is a crucial tool for development of post-pandemic (philosophy of) education.

Abstract:Education and the reconstruction of a democratic society are two themes about which Dewey was especially concerned throughout his life. On the one hand, Dewey regarded education as growth, emphasizing that the end of education is nothing but itself. Dewey received a barrage of criticism for this, as some people saw it as a theory advocating the aimlessness of education. On the other hand, the growth in Dewey’s theory is more than the growth of the individual: it also involves thinking from a social perspective, and thus is democracy-oriented growth. However, Robert B. Westbrook and Aaron Schutz point out that Dewey’s method of starting with local communities to develop a Great Community has its problems, and his proposal to transform society through schools also faces enormous difficulties. This paper firstly clarifies Dewey’s concept of growth. Then, it discusses the relationships among growth, education, and democracy in Dewey’s thoughts. Finally, it analyzes the problems that existed during the development of a democratic society and argues for Dewey’s ideal of a Great Community, which has been questioned.

Abstract:This article focuses on the development of, and new theorising about, a strong democracy education intervention, the Just Community approach. Three questions frame the discussion: (1) Does democracy education change children and adolescents or do students in these programs change their schools, or is there a dynamic interaction over time? (2) How can democracy be ‘learned’? How can the concept of democracy be most thoroughly learned and how can democratic problem‐solving skills best be acquired? (3) How can we optimise the chances that the knowledge and skills learned will motivate future active citizenship? The article begins with a brief history of the Just Community approach, a description of the original developmental model created by Lawrence Kohlberg and collaborators and some variation in more recent European Just Community programs. In a discussion of controversial and difficult issues democracy education may face, the second question takes centre stage and several structural aspects are offered that should be included in such efforts to maximise their effectiveness. In the remainder of the article new perspectives coming from Europe are introduced. Some additional pathways to the Just Community approach and their justifications, which have not played a significant role in the theory and practice of the ‘traditional’ model but can add to its strengths, are identified. Finally, the idea of ‘trusting in advance’ is introduced as critical for well‐functioning educational democracies.

Abstract:Mainstream education for sustainable development conceives of nature as a resource or commodity. The natural world is, for the most part, accorded only instrumental or utilitarian value. As a field it thus aligns itself with a longstanding paradigm in western thinking that sees humans as separate from and dominant over nature. The de-natured nature of education for sustainable development makes it unlikely that the learner will become motivated to care and act for nature. As an alternative, vernacular learning is proposed, i.e. place-based learning rooted in close intimacy and connection with the natural world, with nature perceived as being intrinsically valuable. The importance of fostering emotional affinity with nature is underlined, as are forms of multi-sensory learning that help the learner engage with both spirit and soul of place. Practical examples of vernacular learning activities are enumerated. The importance of nurturing a sense of wonder and joy in the young learner is put forward as vital in fostering an ethic of concern for the planet. Essentially, the argument goes, we only stir ourselves to protect what we have come to love, and thus cultivating a sense of oneness with nature is vital if we are to have any chance of transforming the global environmental condition. Passion is the harbinger of activism.

Abstract:Instead of conceiving school as a passage, as a place and a time in our lives that we attend and then leave, democratic education challenges us to find ways to make schooling an activity that will help citizens take their place in the world of work and participate in the decisions that will shape their lives. Educational practice becomes democratic when it fosters activity rather than passivity. Instead of arguing about how well education prepares our youth for success in the job market, only to complain about the besetting selfishness and lack of public spirit that now mars our culture, we need to reconstruct education in terms of citizenship and social policy. If we want to understand the inclusive activities of a democratic education, we need an educational theory that emphasizes method rather than doctrine. This shift in emphasis will permit us to reassess educational means and outcomes without demanding adherence to some single and absolute standard. An emphasis on method also suggests ways to reinvent the relationship between work and leisure in educational practice. At each level of scholarly pursuit, we ought to provide students with opportunities to reflect on the way in which their learning develops aspects of character. Rather than conceiving individual character as a private preserve, school can help the individual test current ideologies and explore the wider community of cultures in the world. Instead of demanding and exploiting obedience to norms that separate performance from social reality, democratic education for character seeks connection and participation. Education is not a means to some later or finer end: it is the formal principle of a good life, a life fulfilled in public as well as in private pursuits.

Abstract:This chapter provides insight into how the United States of America’s (USA) education policies and early childhood emphasis on developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) both support and hinder early childhood environmental education (EE) and a focus on sustainability. We discuss how a move from the traditional EE model toward education for sustainability (EfS) is beginning to emerge in the USA through an apprenticeship-in-thinking model, drawing attention to organizing early childhood curriculum around the construction of meaning, empathy, agency, and action in the context of real-world experiences, specifically embracing nature as the venue for EE. We suggest that constructivist pedagogy and opportunities to exercise executive function within an inquiry-based curriculum can support environmentalism and social justice, pillars of sustainability, and highlight innovative preschools that are doing so.

Abstract:This article argues that contemporary education policies promoted by UNESCO and the OECD are embracing two distinct post-humanist visions, which I call the 'sustainable futures' and the 'techno-solutionist' strand. I will relate these strands to two conflicting agendas of education after World War II: the humanistic-emancipatory perspective represented by UNESCO, and the 'economics of education' movement, which was dominant in the OECD. I argue that comparative education scholars would be well advised to draw on the humanistic and democratic traditions of the field in critically analysing the range of promissory visions and master narratives that have emerged recently which carry de-humanising tendencies and represent a challenge to democracy.
