Abstract:We are about to publish in the Routledge Editor's Choice series a collection called The Philosophy, Methodology and Pedagogy of Collective Writing. This collection of collections represents the development of the philosophy, methodology and pedagogy of collective writing as it informs members of the Editors' Collective (EC) who also edit, write, review and contribute to Educational Philosophy and Theory (EPAT) and also now to PESA Agora (<a class="ext-link" href="https://pesaagora.com/">https://pesaagora.com/</a>, Editor: Tina Besley) and Access (<a class="ext-link" href="https://pesaagora.com/access-journal/">https://pesaagora.com/access-journal/</a>, Editor: Nina Hood), two 'journals' recently developed by PESA members of EC. In my thinking as the editor of EPAT for over twenty years, I have been concerned with the narrowness of the status of the academic article and the conventions that tightly structure it as a product of industrial culture. Not much has changed in the form of the academic article in the last twenty-five years. If anything, the conventions have hardened and solidified. I have been interested in experimenting with the journal and the academic article, which in the humanities and social sciences still tends to emulate to old model of the lonely scholar operating on their own – an individual author responsible for 'research' who publishes an article of six to seven thousand words with abstract, keywords, introduction, analysis or argument, often methodology, results and conclusion. Copyright is generally signed over to a publisher, and the article, once published after blind peer review, ends up in a journal that then becomes the basis for tenure or promotion in a 'publish or perish' culture. It's a system that drains every last drop of creativity from academic writing forced to focus on the phenomenon of pure information or data. After the digitisation of publishing that occurred in the 1990s academic journals began to offer new possibilities for publishing formats, different distributive forms of collaboration, new multiple forms of collective authorship and also new forms of open review.

Abstract:This book addresses essential educational dimensions of the university that are often overlooked, not only by prevailing discourses and practices but also by standard critical approaches to higher education. Each chapter takes a different approach to the articulation of a ‘post-critical’ view of the university, and focuses on a specific dimension, including lectures, academic freedom, and the student experience. The ‘post-critical’ attitude offers an affirmative approach to the constitutive educational practices of the university. It is ‘post-’ because it is a movement in thought that comes after the critical, which, in its modern and postmodern forms is considered, in Latour’s terms, to have ‘run out of steam’. It is an attempt to articulate new conceptual and methodological tools that help us grasp our current conditions. It is not anti-critique; but rather than seeking to debunk current practices, this affirmative approach offers perspectives that shed new light on what we do as educators, on the essence of our educational practices, and on their immanent value. The focus on the educational, then, applies not only to practices that happen to take place in the educational space of the university, but also to those practices whose value we can understand in educational terms.

Postdigital Science and Education

Abstract:This article is a multi-authored response to an editorial ‵Postdigital Science and Education′ published in 2018 by Petar Jandrić, Jeremy Knox, Tina Besley, Thomas Ryberg, Juha Suoranta and Sarah Hayes in Educational Philosophy and Theory as a mission statement for the journal Postdigital Science and Education. Nineteen authors were invited to produce their sections, followed by two author-reviewers who examined the article as a whole. Authors’ responses signal the sense of urgency for developing the concept of the postdigital and caution about attempts at simplifying complex relationships between human beings and technology. Whilst the digital indeed seems to become invisible, we simultaneously need to beware of its apparent absence and to avoid over-emphasizing its effects. In this attempt, authors offer a wide range of signposts for future research such as ‘the critical postdigital’ and ‘postdigital reflexivity’; they also warn about the group’s own shortcomings such as the lack of ‘real’ sense of collectivity. They emphasize that postdigital education must remain a common good, discuss its various negative aspects such as smartphone addiction and nomophobia, and exhibit some positive examples of postdigital educational praxis. They discuss various aspects of postdigital identities and point towards the need for a postdigital identity theory. With these varied and nuanced responses, the article opens a wide spectrum of opportunity for the development of postdigital approaches to science and education for the future.

Abstract:The relevance of the chosen topic of the article is determined by the need to improve the system of educational activities in postmodernism. The article provides a theoretical analysis of developments on the topic, substantiates axiological (spiritual, moral, aesthetic and other values, their relationship with each other, with social, cultural factors and human personality; section philosophy) perspectives of educational activities in postmodern philosophy, gives a description of axiological areas of academic activity in postmodern philosophy; the main directions of the philosophy of education in the epoch of postmodernism are determined; the vision of a new paradigm of education in the works of researchers and scientists is presented. The article analyses the understanding of the problems of education in the European philosophical and pedagogical tradition of the XX-XXI century, gives a brief overview of systematic works on the philosophy of education of prominent Western researchers of these problems, taking into account their proposed educational values. Based on the analysis, the article's author concludes that it is necessary to critically review several traditions for the philosophy of education and the choice of approaches in understanding the values of modern education. The article's author notes the emergence of new axiological paradigms of education in the philosophy of education of the late XX - early XXI century, associated with the development of cultural-centric and global-historical trends in philosophy.

Abstract:Aim. The aim of the article is to define the possibilities of education in the concept of postmetaphysical thinking. The definition takes into account the need to understand education as an open process of developing an authentic personality. The new understanding of education helps to orient the educational process in the family and school towards the person of the pupil and the development of his real possibilities. Concept. The article is built around a comparison of metaphysical and post-metaphysical thought. It describes the fundamental differences between both types of thinking, with a focus on the importance of others and openness in the interpretation of fundamental pedagogical categories. Attention is paid to the understanding of the pupil, the teacher, the process of education, and the goal of education. The pupil is interpreted as a person who has individual and original abilities. The process of education is understood as the development of the individual abilities of the pupil. The objective of education is determined on the basis of the pupil's abilities. The aim of upbringing is not predetermined. The openness of pedagogical practice necessitates the openness to continuous updating of educational and training methods. Results and conclusion. Creation of a basic framework for the innovation of pedagogical practices. The proposed framework views pedagogical success as a means of finding a sense of self, leaves room for alternative solutions, and emphasises the importance of students' individual abilities. It allows for pedagogy based on acceptance of otherness. Through the pedagogy thus interpreted, it creates a path for creative solutions to educational problems while developing not only the individual abilities of students but also their capacity for tolerance, which is a prerequisite for the functioning of a democratic society, through the pedagogy thus interpreted. Cognitive value. The article presents problems that arise when using classical pedagogy, i.e. pedagogy based on metaphysical thinking. The aim of classical pedagogy is the passive passing of knowledge and the production of graduates with the same abilities and knowledge. Pedagogy based on a postmetaphysical approach educates pupils whose value is based on human nature. Each pupil is accepted according to his individual abilities. He is an original and authentic human being.

Abstract:This article develops a post-determinist and a post-instrumentalist understanding of education and educational research through the lens of postdigital theory. We begin with historicizing current postdigital research by showing its intellectual ancestry and recognizing its rapidly changing nature. We move on to current state of the art, which we present in three wide themes. The first theme is the great convergence of various lower-level techno-scientific convergences, such as analogue–digital, physics–biology, and biology–information, which results in new epistemologies, ontologies and practices. The second theme is some consequences of the great convergence for education and pedagogy, which result in new postdigital ecopedagogies. The third theme is postdigital research, which is reconfigured by the great convergence towards a closer collaboration between traditional scientific fields and disciplines. We briefly outline four such reconfigurations (multidisciplinary, interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity, and antidisciplinarity) and their implications. The article concludes with a brief list of directions for future work in the field.

Abstract:Symbolic interactionism has not stalled with the works of major figures such as Goffman. Rather, there is a continuity from symbolic interactionism to post-structuralism / postmodern theory and sociological conflict theory. The paper shows that there has always been an overlap between micro and macro theory, often by intellectuals considered early founders of theoretical approaches at both levels. Furthermore, this evolution demonstrates the viability of symbolic interactionism as critical theory and its applicability for the analysis of inequality from its origins in interactions to the macrostructures that institutionalize stratification. Abstract:The article discusses the influence of Metamodern culture and digitalization of education on the transformation of the pedagogical understanding of learning process. The author relies on the post-postmodern age interpretations presented in the works of S. Abramson, M. Epstein, R. Eschelman, A. Kirby, J. Mensch, P. Samuels, L. Turner, T. Vermeulen and R. Van den Acker; the transdisciplinary (B. Nicholescu) and connectivist (D. Cormier, G. Siemens) approaches and international documents about the education development in a complex society. In the Metamodern epoch under the influence of the universal digitalization there have been signs indicating that the theory and practice of learning has gone beyond the enduring some pedagogical meanings. This is being manifested at the level of the spontaneous transformation of the main components of learning process; changes in the pedagogical thesaurus, the emergence of “hybrid” didactic theories. The author defines this phenomenon as the post-pedagogical syndrome of the digital age which is capable to disrupt the historical continuity of educational culture. The article talks about the lack of resources in modern pedagogical science to explain the realities of lifelong education as a part of the Digimodernism culture and to develop the truly innovative ways of teaching. The author has suggested that the creation of effective methods of teaching and self-education in the digital age is possible only in the case of rethinking and reassessment of basic didactic categories and concepts on a transdisciplinary basis, taking into account the pedagogical experience of the analogical era and preserving the continuity of humanitarian values and meanings. The author’s arguments and conclusions are addressed to supporters of the study of education on an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary basis.
The Evolution of Post-Postmodernism: Aesthetics of Reality and Trust in Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections and Freedom

Abstract:This study aims to find out how literature moves from the postmodern thought, flourished until the 1990s, to the post-postmodern phenomenon. The study traces the evolution of this new phase as depicted in Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections (2001) and Freedom (2010). It proposes these two works as examples of how over the past two decades, literature shifted from postmodernist fiction’s irony and skepticism that presents novels as “literature of emergency” to ethical objectivism and neo-realism (Franzen, 2002, p. 258). The purpose of the study is twofold. Firstly, it examines Franzen’s deployment of elements such as the subjective perception of truth, selfrestraint, control, and knowledge, which he utilizes to understand reality. Secondly, it explores his employment of narrative tools (e.g., omniscient narrator, metafiction, intertextual dialogue) against postmodern fragmentation and deconstruction. By doing so, Franzen, this study demonstrates, reflects post-postmodernism’s core realist ideas that stress pragmatic interactions with the characters and readers’ cognizance of reality and encourage engagement with the narrative’s language to rework the novel’s social and cultural authority. These post-postmodern narratives reference fictional texts, real-life people, and authentic historical events that exemplify various models, simulations, and patterns of reality within and beyond the text, creating a mediated experience that enables communication with and understanding reality.

Abstract:Ruyu HungNational Chiayi University, TaiwanThis is a collective writing experiment of PESA members, orchestrating the Philosophy of Education in a New Key regarding East Asia. In 2016 the pioneering article 'Towards a philosophy of academic publishing' (Peters et al., 2016) was published. It sheds a new light on collective writing that can make great contribution to the academia by creating 'new knowledge ecologies and the global ecosystem of scholarly communication'. By the experiment of collective writing, novel and interesting works are produced, including: 'Antipodean Theory for Educational Research' (Stewart et al., 2017), 'Ten theses on the shift from (Static) Text to (Moving) Image' (Peters et al., 2018a), 'Is Peer Review in Academic Publishing still working?' (Jackson et al., 2018), and 'Experimenting with academic subjectivity: collective writing, peer production and collective intelligence' (Peters et al., 2019). In the year of 2020, the project of the collective writing on the theme 'Philosophy of education in a new key' (Peters, 2020) was launched to explore possibilities of thinking philosophy of education through collective efforts and intelligence. Its leading tone 'Harmonic Cadence' (Peters, 2020) means that the new field for philosophy of education in the times of the post-truth world (Peters et al., 2018b) is open for more participation and partaking. 'The Philosophy of Education in a New Key: East Asia', the collectively written piece by East Asian scholars, aims to answer to the call of the 'Harmonic Cadence' by introducing East Asian sagacity.

Abstract:The intention of this paper is to unsettle our habits of scholarly writing and reading, from within the grids of intelligibility of Western, rationalist materiality, so as to make visible what we/I no longer often see: the academic writing and publishing constraints that discipline our assemblages of knowledge. Taking poststructuralist articulations of the ‘critical’ and ‘ethical’ as heuristics for developing a praxis of critical deconstructive authoring, where agency is coterminous with, not external to, the event of writing, it puts to work Foucault’s perspective that the subject is a form, not a substance, (Foucault, 1984, p. 290) to explore one way of crafting ‘an academic subject yet to come’ (Ball, 2016, p. 2). Beginning with a brief consideration of the normative mechanisms that govern scholarly writing, it then uses some of the conceptual tools of Foucault, Derrida and Spivak to unfold and vindicate spaces in the grids of governance for reforming the subject.

Abstract:Abstract Considerable controversy has raged around the question of postmodern culture and its products. This book attempts to overcome some of the antagonistic viewpoints involved by developing themes from the work of Kant, Benjamin, and Merleau–Ponty in the context of themes from contemporary culture. Attention is paid to such topics as the relation between art and politics, the problematics of poststructuralist and feminist approaches to art, the emergence and re‐emergence of theories of the sublime, and the continuing possibility of artistic creativity. The central theme is that there are experiential constants around which art and philosophy constellate. At the same time, however, due account must be given of the ways in which such constants are historically mediated. By articulating various aspects of this relation, it is shown how postmodern sensibility can be more than that of an alienated consumerism. Understood in the proper theoretical context, it is grounded on experiences and artefacts that humanize.

Abstract:This paper reports on the theoretical and political rationale for an assessment strategy designed to support the development of academic literacies and learning cultures amongst undergraduate and postgraduate education students in one metropolitan and one regional university in Australia. The ‘Critical Review’ is an integrated assessment task that aims to promote a student culture of learning preparedness, critical thinking, scholarly writing and educational ethics by equipping students with both content-specific knowledges and generalisable skills and orientations to academic learning. The Critical Review is both formative and summative in purpose, with primary emphasis given to its usefulness to individual students across a diversity of learning environments and assessment modalities, as well as its importance to enhancing institutional learning cultures. The flexibility of the assessment design is readily incorporated into a range of course structures, and adapts readily to studies in a variety of disciplinary fields.

Abstract:During the last three decades, so-called "postism'' (a Chinese non-professional, invented referent to postcolonialism, postmodernism and poststructuralism) has powerfully criticized and challenged the hegemonic ideology of the long-standing Euro-American centralism and the authoritative discourse of modernism in Western intellectual and academic circles, albeit it with various different resonances in Chinese and other nonWestern societies. By tracing the trajectory of Western conceptual ideas from classical "rational'' interpretations of history, this article tries to construct the inner connections and evolution between these conceptions and ways of thinking, and to summarize their impacts on and reactions from the field of Chinese historical studies. This article suggests that these new trends have definitely cast light on macro ideological and perspective concerns but have been less fruitful in concrete historical studies.

Abstract:The governing concept of this chapter is the contention that shifting trends in contemporary, postmodern society are leading to concurrent changes in the theory and practice of current art museum education. This chapter begins with a description of general theories of postmodernism and postmodernist pedagogy and an analysis of how museum education can employ these characteristics of postmodern education. The argument that facets of postmodernism are manifesting themselves in contemporary museum education is reinforced by a case study that describes the educational mission and selected programmes of one particular museum between the years 1991-1994. This case study is placed in the context of postmodern education and is used to generate a definition of postmodern art museum education.

Abstract:In this contribution, I explore how critical pedagogical perspectives can inspire adult and community education practices. The central argument is that today, in contrast with the heydays of emancipatory practices and theories, the classical critical approaches need reconsideration. The paper explores how these approaches sometimes have a stultifying effect on the participants in practice. In line with the French philosopher Rancière, a perspective is explored that departs from emancipated participants rather than from participants in need of emancipation. The theoretical investigation is inspired by reflections on art practices that struggle with similar questions on emancipation as the field of adult and community education.

Abstract:The postmodern paradigm has developed very broadly. It has not only become a discussion in the field of philosophy but also influenced almost all fields of science, especially the socio-cultural sciences, including language teaching. This study aims to review how postmodernism affects language teaching and what effects it has on the language teaching and learning process, be it teaching a second or foreign language or teaching a first language. This is an analytic study using a literature review approach from written sources to describe the results and draw research conclusions. The results show that postmodernism has influenced language teaching, especially with the emergence of criticism of existing teaching methods and the raising of the critical question of whether teaching languages should use existing teaching methods or whether language teaching does not need to follow these methods. Criticism then gives birth to an understanding method of pedagogy that is based on communicative language teaching (CLT). Postmodern philosophy suggests that language teaching can be done with a combination of several existing methods or can also add new methods or techniques.

Abstract:In the beginning years of the new Millennium, Chinese scholars undertake studies of post-modernity in the areas of philosophy, law, politics, psychology, literary arts and cultural industries, etc., expanding the research space for the post- Academic circles have acquired a new understanding of the significance of post-modernity, noting that post-modernity is not the simple depreciation of reason.
