Abstract:Down quilts are widely used worldwide, and their thermal insulation performance significantly impacts the sleep thermal comfort of the human body. The main objective of this research is to establish an effective method to predict down quilts' thermal resistance. A three-dimensional mathematical model was developed to simulate heat transfer of the down quilt on the guarded hot plate apparatus. It was found that the temperature and heat flux at the quilting stitch areas are highest within the quilt. The heat transfer at the surface of the down quilt is primarily convection and radiation, with proportions of about 30 % and 70 %, respectively. The radiative heat flux is higher at the quilting stitch areas compared to the thickest parts of the quilt, while the convective heat flux is lower. Furthermore, a parametric study identified filling parameters (fill power and fill weight) as the most significant factors influencing quilt thermal resistance, followed by quilting density, with shell fabric parameters (thickness and thermal conductivity) having a less effect. Finally, based on the simulated data, a predictive equation was established to estimate the thermal resistance of down quilts. The findings of this study enhance the understanding of heat transfer mechanisms of quilt and provide a practical tool for assessing the thermal performance of down quilts.
