Abstract:We show that for a simple graph $G$, $c'(G)\leq\Delta(G)+2$ where $c'(G)$ is the choice index (or edge-list chromatic number) of $G$, and $\Delta(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. As a simple corollary of this result, we show that the total chromatic number $\chi_T(G)$ of a simple graph satisfies the inequality $\chi_T(G)\leq\ \Delta(G)+4$ and the total choice number $c_T(G)$ also satisfies this inequality. We also relate these bounds to the Hall index and the Hall condition index of a simple graph, and to the total Hall number and the total Hall condition number of a simple graph.

Abstract:Consider a situation with $n$ agents or players where some of the players form a coalition with a certain collective objective. Simple games are used to model systems that can decide whether coalitions are successful (winning) or not (losing). A simple game can be viewed as a monotone boolean function. The dimension of a simple game is the smallest positive integer $d$ such that the simple game can be expressed as the intersection of $d$ threshold functions where each threshold function uses a threshold and $n$ weights. Taylor and Zwicker have shown that $d$ is bounded from above by the number of maximal losing coalitions. We present two new upper bounds both containing the Taylor/Zwicker-bound as a special case. The Taylor/Zwicker-bound imply an upper bound of ${n \choose n/2}$. We improve this upper bound significantly by showing constructively that $d$ is bounded from above by the cardinality of any binary covering code with length $n$ and covering radius $1$. This result supplements a recent result where Olsen et al. showed how to construct simple games with dimension $|C|$ for any binary constant weight SECDED code $C$ with length $n$. Our result represents a major step in the attempt to close the dimensionality gap for simple games.

Abstract:The bondage number of a graph is the smallest number of its edges whose removal results in a graph having a larger domination number. We provide constant upper bounds for the bondage number of graphs on topological surfaces, improve upper bounds for the bondage number in terms of the maximum vertex degree and the orientable and non-orientable genera of the graph, and show tight lower bounds for the number of vertices of graphs 2-cell embeddable on topological surfaces of a given genus. Also, we provide stronger upper bounds for graphs with no triangles and graphs with the number of vertices larger than a certain threshold in terms of the graph genera. This settles Teschner's Conjecture in positive for almost all graphs.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we consider those graphs that have maximum degree at least 1/ k times their order, where k is a (small) positive integer. A result of Hajnal and Szemerédi concerning equitable vertex‐colorings and an adaptation of the standard proof of Vizing's Theorem are used to show that if the maximum degree of a graph G satisfies Δ( G ) ≥ | V ( G )/ k , then X ″( G ) ≤ Δ( G ) + 2 k + 1. This upper bound is an improvement on the currently available upper bounds for dense graphs having large order.

In the paper, we show that for any graph G of order n , . We pose a conjecture that for a graph G of order n . For supporting it, we show that the conjecture holds for any triangle-free graphs, Cartesian, direct, lexicographic product of any two graphs.

Abstract:A well-known conjecture of Vizing is that $\gamma(G \square H) \ge \gamma(G)\gamma(H)$ for any pair of graphs $G, H$, where $\gamma$ is the domination number and $G \square H$ is the Cartesian product of $G$ and $H$. Suen and Tarr, improving a result of Clark and Suen, showed $\gamma(G \square H) \ge \frac{1}{2}\gamma(G)\gamma(H) + \frac{1}{2}\min(\gamma(G),\gamma(H))$. We further improve their result by showing $\gamma(G \square H) \ge \frac{1}{2}\gamma(G)\gamma(H) + \frac{1}{2}\max(\gamma(G),\gamma(H)).$

Abstract:We study the communication complexity of a number of graph properties where the edges of the graph $G$ are distributed between Alice and Bob (i.e., each receives some of the edges as input). Our main results are: * An Omega(n) lower bound on the quantum communication complexity of deciding whether an n-vertex graph G is connected, nearly matching the trivial classical upper bound of O(n log n) bits of communication. * A deterministic upper bound of O(n^{3/2}log n) bits for deciding if a bipartite graph contains a perfect matching, and a quantum lower bound of Omega(n) for this problem. * A Theta(n^2) bound for the randomized communication complexity of deciding if a graph has an Eulerian tour, and a Theta(n^{3/2}) bound for the quantum communication complexity of this problem. The first two quantum lower bounds are obtained by exhibiting a reduction from the n-bit Inner Product problem to these graph problems, which solves an open question of Babai, Frankl and Simon. The third quantum lower bound comes from recent results about the quantum communication complexity of composed functions. We also obtain essentially tight bounds for the quantum communication complexity of a few other problems, such as deciding if G is triangle-free, or if G is bipartite, as well as computing the determinant of a distributed matrix.
On Total Bondage Number of Graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the concept of total bondage in finite graphs without isolated vertices. A vertex set $D$ is considered a total dominating set if every vertex $v$ in the graph $G$ has a neighbor in $D$. The minimum cardinality of all total dominating sets in $G$ is denoted as $\gamma_t(G)$. A total bondage edge set $B$ is a subset of the edges of $G$ such that the removal of $B$ from $G$ does not create isolated vertices, and the total dominating number of the resulting graph $G-B$ is strictly greater than $\gamma_t(G)$. The total bondage number of $G$, denoted $b_t(G)$, is defined as the minimum cardinality of such total bondage edge sets. Our paper establishes upper bounds on $b_t(G)$ based on the maximum degree of a graph. Notably, for planar graphs with minimum degree $\delta(G) \geq 3$, we prove $b_t(G) \leq \Delta + 8$ or $b_t(G) \leq 10$. Additionally, for a connected planar graph with $\delta(G) \geq 3$ and $g(G) \geq 4$, we show that $b_t(G) \leq \Delta + 3$ if $G$ does not contain an edge with degree sum at most 7. We also improve some upper bounds of the total bondage number for trees, enhance existing lemmas, and find upper bounds for total bondage in specific graph classes.

Abstract:In this work, we give the sharp upper bound for the number of cliques in graphs with bounded odd circumferences. This generalized Turán-type result is an extension of the celebrated Erdős and Gallai theorem and a strengthening of Luo's recent result. The same bound for graphs with bounded even circumferences is a trivial application of the theorem of Li and Ning.

Abstract:In a 2015 paper [8] by Furtula and Gutman, the sum of cubes of vertex degrees of a molecular graph G is called the forgotten topological index and denoted by F(G). Authors of [8] establish lower and upper bounds of F(G) and show that F(G) can play a significant role in some physico-chemical applications. In this paper, we provide new lower and upper bounds of the forgotten topological index F(G) in terms of graph irregularity, Zagreb indices, graph size, and maximum/minimum vertex degrees. We characterize all graphs that attain the new bounds of F(G) and show that the new bounds are better than the bounds given in [8] for all benzenoid systems with more than one hexagon. As corollaries, various upper bounds of F(G) easily follow. Moreover, upper bounds of F(G) for connected Kr+1-free graphs are also presented.

Abstract:Let G be a graph and k a positive integer. A strong k -edge-coloring of G is a mapping such that for any two edges e and that are either adjacent to each other or adjacent to a common edge, . The strong chromatic index of G , denoted as , is the minimum integer k such that G has a strong k -edge-coloring. Lv, Li and Zhang [Graphs and Combinatorics 38 (3) (2022) 63] proved that if G is a claw-free subcubic graph other than the triangular prism then . In addition, they asked if the upper bound 8 can be improved to 7. In this paper, we answer this question in the affirmative. Our proof implies a polynomial-time algorithm for finding strong 7-edge-colorings of such graphs. We also construct infinitely many claw-free subcubic graphs with their strong chromatic indices attaining the bound 7.

Abstract:The online graph exploration problem , which was proposed by Kalyanasundaram and Pruhs (Theor Comput Sci 130(1):125–138, 1994), is defined as follows: Given an edge-weighted undirected connected graph and a specified vertex (called the origin ), the task of an algorithm is to compute a path from the origin to the origin which contains all the vertices of the given graph. The goal of the problem is to find such a path of minimum weight. At each time, an online algorithm knows only the weights of edges each of which consists of visited vertices or vertices adjacent to visited vertices. Fritsch (Inform Process Lett 168:1006096, 2021) showed that the competitive ratio of an online algorithm is at most three for any unicyclic graph. On the other hand, Brandt et al. (Theor Comput Sci 839:176–185, 2020) showed a lower bound of two on the competitive ratio for any unicyclic graph. In this paper, we showed the competitive ratio of an online algorithm is at most 5/2 for any unicyclic graph.

Abstract:For any graph $G$, we define the power $\pi(G)$ as the minimum of the largest number of neighbors in a $\gamma$-set of $G$, of any vertex, taken over all $\gamma$-sets of $G$. We show that $\gamma(G\square H)\geq \frac{\pi(G)}{2\pi(G) -1}\gamma(G)\gamma(H)$. This implies that for any graphs $G$ and $H$, $\gamma(G\square H)\geq \frac{\gamma(G)}{2\gamma(G)-1}\gamma(G)\gamma(H)$, and if $G$ is claw-free or $P_4$-free, $\gamma(G\square H)\geq \frac{2}{3}\gamma(G)\gamma(H)$, where $\gamma(G)$ is the domination number of $G$.

Abstract:The bondage number $b(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with larger domination number. An orientable surface $\mathbb{S}_h$ of genus $h$, $h \geq 0$, is obtained from the sphere $\mathbb{S}_0$ by adding $h$ handles. A non-orientable surface $\mathbb{N}_q$ of genus $q$, $q \geq 1$, is obtained from the sphere by adding $q$ crosscaps. The Euler characteristic of a surface is defined by $\chi(\mathbb{S}_h) = 2 - 2h$ and $\chi(\mathbb{S}_q)= 2-q$. Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ which is 2-cell embedded on a surface $\mathbb{M}$ with $\chi(\mathbb{M})= \chi$. We prove that $b(G) \leq 7+i$ when $\mathbb{M} = \mathbb{N}_i$, $i=1,2,3$, and $b(G) \leq 12$ when $\mathbb{M} \in \{\mathbb{N}_4, \mathbb{S}_2\}$. We give new arguments that improve the known upper bounds on the bondage number at least when $-7\chi/(\delta(G) - 5) < n \leq -12\chi$, $\delta(G) \geq 6$, where $\delta(G)$ is the minimum degree of $G$. We obtain sufficient conditions for the validity of the inequality $b(G) \leq 2s-2$, provided $G$ has degree $s$ vertices. In particular, we prove that if $\delta (G) = \delta \geq 6$, $\chi \leq -1$ and $-14\chi < \delta - 4 + 2(\delta -5)n$ then $b(G) \leq 2\delta -2$. We show that if $\gamma (G) = \gamma \not = 2$, where $\gamma (G)$ is the domination number of $G$, then $n \geq \gamma + (1 + \sqrt{9+8\gamma-8\chi})/2$; the bound is tight. We also present upper bounds for the bondage number of graphs in terms of the girth, domination number and Euler characteristic. As a corollary we prove that if $\gamma(G) \geq 4$ and $\chi \leq -1$, then $b(G) \leq 11 - 24\chi/(9 + \sqrt{41 - 8\chi})$. Several unanswered questions are posed.

Abstract:Let r≥2 be a real number. A complex nowhere‐zero r ‐flow on a graph G is an orientation of G together with an assignment φ:E(G)→C such that, for all e∈E(G) , the Euclidean norm of the complex number φ(e) lies in the interval [1,r−1] and, for every vertex, the incoming flow is equal to the outgoing flow. The complex flow number of a bridgeless graph G , denoted by φC(G) , is the minimum of the real numbers r such that G admits a complex nowhere‐zero r ‐flow. The exact computation of φC seems to be a hard task even for very small and symmetric graphs. In particular, the exact value of φC is known only for families of graphs where a lower bound can be trivially proved. Here, we use geometric and combinatorial arguments to give a nontrivial lower bound for φC(G) in terms of the odd‐girth of a cubic graph G (i.e., the length of a shortest odd cycle) and we show that this lower bound is tight. This result relies on the exact computation of the complex flow number of the wheel graph Wn . In particular, we show that for every odd n , the value of φC(Wn) arises from one of three suitable configurations of points in the complex plane according to the congruence of n modulo 6.
