Abstract:The traditional polymer blend process has disadvantages of degradation and high energy consumption due to intense shear.Chaotic mixing can be used to produce polymer blends with the advantages of controllable morphology and high efficiency.The geometric model of chaotic mixing was illustrated along with corresponding equipments and mixing mechanisms.the morphology of polymer blends developed through a widely accepted route involving step by step transitions from lamellas to fibrils and to droplets.Therefore the chaotic mixing can be used to produce toughness enhanced,multilayer anti-infiltration,the fiber and conductive polymer-based composites by controlling the morphology of polymer blends.

Abstract:Most of polymer blends are thermodynamic immiscible because of small entropy of mixing, forming unique spatial-temporal pattern. In this review, based on our recent work, we focus on the phase separation kinetics and corresponding pattern evolution of polymer system by using time dependent Ginzberg-Landau (TDGL) equation. The review contents cover the phase separation dynamics under shear for polymer blends and block copolymers, phase separation coupling with chemical reactions, and phase separation on the spherical surface. Also microphase separation dynamics of complex triblock copolymers is reviewed by means of the coupling between the TDGL and self-consistent field theory (SCFT), namely dynamic SCFT, which consider both the dynamics and the topological characteristic of the chain.

Abstract:We investigate the ring-linear polymer blends under Poiseuille flow across a range of flow intensities. As rings are flexible (K- br = 0), the threading probability gradually increases with an increase in flow field strength. However, as rings are semiflexible (K- br > 0), the threading probability significantly decreases and then significantly increases as the flow field strength increases. Additionally, for different ring rigidity parameters, the critical flow field strength corresponding to the rapid increase in the threading probability is almost the same. When the flow field strength exceeds this critical value, ring-linear polymer blends will aggregate into a cluster due to the combination of entanglement between polymers and the large differences in the velocities of the polymers. The cluster moves along the direction of the flow field and can be bisected by the flow channel's centerplane into two parts, and each part performs the tank-treading motion in opposite directions: one moving counterclockwise and the other moving clockwise. The dynamic movement of the cluster significantly promotes an increase in threading probability. Furthermore, the nonlinear relationship between the characteristic time of tank-treading motion and flow field strength suggests that the structure of the cluster exhibits similar dynamic and structural behaviors over a certain range of flow field strengths. The results could enhance our understanding of the intricate threading properties observed in ring-linear polymer blends upon exposure to external force fields.

Abstract:The phase separation of polymer blend films on the stripe patterned surface is numerically investigated by coupling the Flory-Huggins-de Gennes equation with the Cahn-Hilliard-Cook equation. The kinetic pathway and its mechanisms are analyzed in both real space and reciprocal space. Compared to experimental measurements, the simulated results exhibit more complete kinetic pathways of pattern-directed phase separation. It is found that the extreme fluctuation of the chemical potential at the edges of stripes leads to the formation of the branch structure. Our simulated results indicate that the phase inversion, occurring not only in the polymer/air interface but also in the bulk, can extensively affect the relations between the isotropic phase separation and the periodic structure. The analysis in reciprocal space shows that the evolution of the phase morphologies in the polymer/air interface obeys a (1)/(3) power law for a thick film, consistent with the experimental results. It is also found that the amplitude change of the first diffraction peak can reflect the kinetic pathway of the phase structure in the polymer/air interface very well. A narrower strip periodicity corresponds to an earlier phase inversion and an earlier appearance of the droplet arrays in strips.

Abstract:We study the possible formation of ordered structures of a binary polymer blend by introducing mobile particles in a periodically oscillating driving field. The particles which have a preferential attraction to one of the immiscible phases, will significantly perturb the phase separation of the system and breakup the isotropy of the system, so that some interesting structures such as lamellar and cylinder phases are observed by appropriate selection of the simulation parameters. We examine in detail the dependence of formed morphology and domain size on the oscillating fields, the relative composition of mixtures, the diffusion coefficient, and quench depth, and then discuss how to realize stable and highly ordered structures.

Abstract:The surface-induced structure formation of polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) on a chemically patterned substrate was studied for the first time. The patterns on the substrate were successfully transferred to the PDLC film, resulting in alternating LC-rich and polymer-rich phases. This simple approach offers a new means of organizing micrometer-sized LC domains into well-ordered structures in a polymer matrix of PDLCs.

Abstract:We investigate the phase separation of a binary polymer blend–particle system under fluctuating fields. Our results show that the disordered stochastic field would drive the formation of ordered stripe structures, and the domain growth dynamics is intensively affected by both the blend–particle coupling effect and stochastic motion of driven particles. Particularly, for large fluctuating force and enough particle number, the domain morphology shows the better orientational stripe patterns in two-dimensional case, and the cylindrical structure along the fluctuating force direction in three-dimensional case. In addition, the particle mobility is also one of the crucial factors dominating the domain growth at the late stage.

Abstract:Polymer blends or copolymers have multiscale complex structures that can be used as templates to prepare various complex materials. To regulate the mesoscale structures of these polymer blends or copolymers, there are three fundamental problems: What is the physical condition of the microphase separation needed to form materials with desired compositions and mesoscale structures in different domains? How do these compositions and mesoscale structures evolve during the preparation period? How does the morphology change in the interfacial region? Many experimental measurements, computer simulation methods, and theories have been developed. However, most of them are only suitable for individual tasks. In recent years, we have developed theoretical methods based on equations of state that can be used comprehensively to Study the multiscale structure of polymer systems, including the phase diagrams, the morphologies and evolution of microphase separation, the densities and composition profiles in different domains, and the molecular configurations in the interfacial region. The molecular parameters of the equation of state or the Helmholtz function model can be determined from the pressure, volume, temperature, and miscibility data of polymers, which ensures the practical applicability of the methods.

Abstract:The past few years have seen many advances in our understanding of the dynamics of polymeric fluids. These include improvements on the successful reptation theory; an emerging molecular theory of semiflexible chain dynamics; and an understanding of how to calculate and classify ``phase diagrams'' for flow-induced transitions. Experimentalists have begun mapping out the phase behavior of wormlike micelles, a ``living'' polymeric system, in flow: these systems undergo transitions into shear-thinning or shear-thickening phases, whose variety is remarkably rich and poorly understood. Polymeric ideas must be extended to include the delicate charge and composition effects which conspire to stabilize the micelles and are strongly influenced by flow.

Abstract:The polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film was prepared and its binary structure was studied, which including the phase diagram of the PDLC prepared under the electric field and the phase separation of PDLC. Due to the effect of electric field to the liquid crystal, if an electric field is applied in the polymerization induced phase separation, the clear point of the liquid crystal will change distinctly. Phase separation is induced by the repellency between the liquid crystal and polymer chain. it can be detected by the DLI Technique.

Abstract:The morphology and rheology of immiscible polymer blends has been the subjects of many researches. It is well known that the properties of blends depend on the rheology of components fluids as well as the properties of interface. For blends composed of isotropic fluids, the capillary number, defined as the ratio between the shear stress and the interfacial stress, controls the behaviors of dispersed droplet under flow field. When one component becomes an anisotropic fluid, it is expected that the anisotropic interfacial properties would greatly affect the properties of the blends. The effect of anisotropic properties of interface between a polymer and a liquid crystal (LC) on the steady and transient behavior of morphological evolution and rheology properties is the main interest of the present work. The deformation and relaxation behavior of a LC droplet immersed in a polymer matrix is investigated and compared with the predictions of our recent model.

Abstract:In this report, we review and discuss the results of our recent studies on the characteristics of microphase separation behavior and interphase stabilization for high performance polymer blends. The blends investigated include crystalline/crystalline polymers, crystalline/amorphous polymers, liquid crystalline polymer/thermoplastics, and amorphous/amorphous thermoplastics or thermosetting systems. Most of the blends are either immiscible or partially miscible, and are thermodynamically unstable or meta-stable systems. The macro-properties of these blends are controlled by many factors such as the miscibility, phase morphology and structure, crystallinity, kinetics of crystallization or phase separation processing, and interfacial adhesion of the components. Among these, the microphase and interfacial structures are the most significant factors influencing the ultimate properties of the blends. In order to obtain relatively stable blends, formation of semi-IPN in either the bulk or interphase, and/or the occurrence of crosslinking, transesterification and physical entanglement in the interfacial region will be profitable to the stabilization of the blending systems.

Abstract:The interplay between liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and crystallization at several compositions in statistical copolymer blends of poly(ethyleneco-hexene) and poly(ethylene-cobutene) has been examined by optical microscopy (OM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The phase contrast optical microscopy shows interconnected bicontinuous structures for deeply quenched LLPS, characteristic of spinodal decomposition. After a second quench to a temperature below the melting point, an overwhelming change in crystallization kinetics has been clearly observed, which is caused by the increase of the nucleation rate assisted by concentration fluctuations due to the spontaneous spinodal LLPS. We propose a new mechanism of “fluctuation assisted nucleation” in the crystallization process for such interactive process in a blend system. The experimental results from OM, AFM, and DSC measurements at various conditions are all consistent with the fluctuation assisted nucleation model.

Abstract:Simulations of phase separation under oscillatory shear flow have been performed based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation. To calculate the stress tensor, the expression proposed by Kawasaki was used. The results of the simulations have been confronted directly with experimental results on a LCST blend of P alpha MSAN/PMMA to evaluate the potential of the simulations. The effect of quench depth, shear amplitude, and shear frequency on the morphology development as well as on the corresponding rheological properties has been investigated. The results show that the characteristic rheological behavior of phase-separating systems can be attributed to the interfacial relaxation, which is changing during the process of phase separation. The strength of the concentration fluctuations and the interfacial volume fraction are key factors determining the contribution of interfacial relaxation to the global rheological behavior of the blend. In the low frequency range, the oscillatory shear cannot affect the critical paint, but it can accelerate the coagulation and growth of the blend morphology. The simulations qualitatively agree with the experimental findings.
Manipulating liquid-liquid phase separation using patterned flow

Abstract:The precise control of liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) is the key to developing cutting-edge technologies that benefit diverse disciplines. Fluid flow was found to be capable of controlling the structure and effective temperature of LLPS, but the extent and precision of control were less than optimal. In this article, we propose that patterned flow can be employed as a generic tool to manipulate LLPS effectively. By combining theoretical modeling and numerical simulations, we demonstrate that flows with tailor-made structures can become functional, allowing us to control diverse aspects of LLPS. Typical examples include the capture and pinning of droplets, fine-tuning of droplet sizes, forced assembly of periodic droplet arrays, and the remodeling of the kinetics and structure of phase separation. These manipulations are grounded on the redistribution of chemical potential by the structured flow. Our results not only can lead to potential LLPS-based technologies, but also highlight the rich behavior of LLPS introduced by the patterned flow.

Abstract:Polymeric porous media (PPM) are widely used as advanced materials, such as sound dampening foams, lithium-ion batteries, stretchable sensors, and biofilters. The functionality, reliability, and durability of these materials have a strong dependence on the microstructural patterns of PPM. One underlying mechanism for the formation of porosity in PPM is phase separation, which engenders polymer-rich and polymer-poor (pore) phases. Herein, the phase separation in polymer solutions is discussed from two different aspects: diffusion and hydrodynamic effects. For phase separation governed by diffusion, two novel morphological transitions are reviewed: "cluster-to-percolation" and "percolation-to-droplets," which are attributed to an effect that the polymer-rich and the solvent-rich phases reach the equilibrium states asynchronously. In the case dictated by hydrodynamics, a deterministic nature for the microstructural evolution during phase separation is scrutinized. The deterministic nature is caused by an interfacial-tension-gradient (solutal Marangoni force), which can lead to directional movement of droplets as well as hydrodynamic instabilities during phase separation.

Abstract:The morphology evolution in immiscible polymer-liquid-crystal systems is quite different from flexible polymer-polymer mixtures due to the anisotropic properties of liquid crystals. The dynamics and rheology of such system are discussed. A theoretical model is proposed to describe the dynamics of liquid-crystal droplets in a flow field and the rheological properties of immiscible liquid-crystal/polymer mixtures. The deformation of liquid-crystal droplet is found to be greatly dependent on the interfacial properties of polymer-liquid crystal. The scaling relationships of interfacial contribution to the stresses are found to be quite different from the isotropic mixtures with droplet morphology.

Abstract:We present the experimental results concerning a phase separation dynamics and relevant pattern formation in thin film samples (ca. 10 mum in thickness) of a liquid crystalline copolyester in its biphasic region. The copolyester separates into an isotropic phase and an anisotropic phase in the biphasic region due to its composition heterogeneity, though it is homopolymer. The entire phase-separation process was in situ monitored in real space by polarized light microscopy. The structural evolution that appeared in the digital images was further analyzed using the fast Fourier transform method. The process can be described by the following steps: (1) The formation of a percolated network consisting of phase-separated isotropic and anisotropic liquids. The network growth obeys a scaling law Lambda(m)(t) proportional to q(m)(t)(-1) proportional to t(alpha), where Lambda(m)(t) is the characteristic length of the domains, q(m)(t) is the characteristic wavenumber, and t is the time. A crossover of the exponent from (1)/(3) to (1)/(2) was observed. (2) The network breaks up at a critical value of Lambda(m)(t) = 50 mum to form some anisotropic fragments with irregular shapes, followed by the further shrinking and reshaping into anisotropic drops. (3) The diffusion-coalescence of the drops to form large merged drops and the reshaping of these merged drops followed by orientational ordering within the merged drops. We studied the temperature dependence of these individual processes and discussed the mechanisms and the scaling behavior of the domain growth in the first step.
