Abstract:The key effect of the self-assembly mechanism of dendritic gelators is researched by a comprehensive investigation of the gelation behavior of L-lysine dendritic gelators with different structures of three generations in 20 different solvents. The solvents investigation, H-1 NMR, tube inversion method, DSC, rheology, FTIR and rheological measurements show that the reported dendritic gelators self-assemble through the main driving force of hydrogen bonds and the second driving force of pi-pi stackings. So the key effect of the self-assembling mechanism is that these factors can influence the driving force of the self-assembly process. This is the reason that L-lysine dendritic gelators tend to gelate in solvents with low a and beta parameter values, which have less influence on the formation of hydrogen bonds between the gelators. Higher generations provide a much greater hydrogen bond density in the gelators, which makes them have a higher gelation ability. The benzyl terminal groups provide the second driving force of pi-pi stacking, making the Bzl-Gly-Lys gelators have much stronger gelation ability. This research reports a comprehensive insight into the precise ways in which the solubility parameters of the solvents, the gelator generation and the terminal group effects can influence the self-assembly and gelation of dendritic gelators. Gaining this type of fundamental understanding is essential if the key effect of this important class of self-assembling soft materials is to be truly understood.

Abstract:A series of low-molecular-mass organogelators (LMOGs), dimeric dendrons based on natural amino acids, glycine. and aspartic acid, with different aliphatic spacers have been synthesized and their self-assembly behavior and structure-property relationship have been studied. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were employed to characterize the self-assembled structures and to examine the effect of the length of aliphatic spacers on the gelation. It was found that all of the gels were thermoreversible and stable for more than half a year at room temperature. The dimeric dendrons with longer aliphatic spacers displayed enhanced gelation ability. The SAXS patterns of the xerogels G2SnG2 (n = 6, 8, and 10) showed periodical reflections that could be attributed to the formation of a hexagonal columnar phase, whereas G2S15G2 formed a lamellar structure. Hydrogen bonding and pi-pi stacking interactions were evidenced by IR and fluorescence spectroscopy with pyrene as a probe, respectively. Moreover, the compounds G2SnG2 not only acted as efficient organogelators but also self-organized into thermotropic liquid crystal, with the mesophase formation being correlated to the spacer length.

Abstract:The first G(1)-C(12)-G(1) and second G(2)-C(12)-G(2) generation dendritic gelators were synthesized by divergent method, using dodecane diamine as the central core, BOC-lysine branching monomer as branch structure which connected to the 1,12-diaminododecane via covalent peptide bond linkages. The structures were confirmed by ill-NMR and MS. Tube inversion experiments showed that the self-assembly of the G(2)-C(12)-G(2) in the methyl methacrylate (MMA) formed a more stable gel than G(1)-C(12)-G(1). G(2)-C(12)-G(2) could form a stable gel at a low concentration (0.2 wt%), and the gel-sol temperature (T(gel)) was 26 degrees C. However G(1)-C(12)-G(1) could not form an effective gel in MMA until the concentration up to 4 wt% and T(gel) = 16 degrees C. Electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) experiments revealed gel network was constituted by micelle, which was made up of numerous fibers. And the fibers become denser and larger with the increasing G(2)-C(12)-G(2) content.

Abstract:Self-assembly behaviors of a series of amino acids-based dendrons, from the first generation (G1) to the third generation (G3) with various focal moieties or peripheral groups, were systematically studied. The supramolecular structures in organogels, thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals (LCs) were measured. The influence of the focal groups, dendritic branches, and generation numbers on the mesophase of organogels or LCs was studied by a combination of experimental techniques including transmission electronic spectrometry (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), infrared (IR) spectra, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). It was found that the gelation ability of the dendrons in organic solvents was highly related to the generation; namely, none of the G1 dendrons could form organogels, G2 dendrons displayed good gelation ability, and G3 dendrons gelled the organic solvents with the lowest critical gelation concentration. Oscillatory shear measurements indicated that the gels behaved as viscoelastic materials with good tolerance to external shear force. In addition, all of G3 dendrons and some G2 dendrons were capable of self-organizing to afford the thermotropic and lyotropic LCs.
Self-Assembly of Gelators Confined Within the Nano-Scale Interlayer Space of Organo-Montmorillonite

Abstract:The self-assembly of low molecular weight gelators confined within the nano-scale interlayer space of organo-montmorillonite is likely to be different from that under normal conditions (bulk space). Four kinds of gelators, 1-methyl-2,4-bis(N'-n-octadecylureido) benzene (MBB18), 1-methyl-2,4-bis(N'-n-dodecylureido) benzene (MBB12), bis(4'-stearamido phenyl) methane (BSM18) and bis(4'-octanamido phenyl) methane (BOM8), were used to investigate gelation of organic solvents confined within the nanoscale interlayer space of organo-montmorillonite. The possible morphologies of these gelators aggregates confined within the nano-scale space of organo-montmorillonite will be discussed in comparison with that in bulk space by employing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Herein, two types of organogels were prepared under the same conditions. One of them was formed within the interlayer space of organo-montmorillonite and another was formed in bulk space. The XRD patterns confirm that self-assembly of gelators takes place via an unusual pathway within the confined interlayer space of organo-montmorillonite, indicating that the alkyl chains of gelators adopt a parallel arrangement and do not insert into each other. This unusual arrangement of gelators confined within the interlayer space of organo-montmorillonite does lead to the different thermal effect observed by the DSC measurements. These features ultimately strengthen the thermodynamic stability of gelator aggregates, for example MBB18, and raise the gel-to-sol transition temperature, which jumps from 60 to 123 degrees C.

Abstract:Dendronized polymer (DP) gelators were prepared via complexation of a dendritic gelator of the poly(urethane amide) dendron, which contains an ionizing carboxyl group on the apexes, with three positively charged polyelectrolytes. All these complexes could form organogels in toluene, and their gel properties were studied through determination of their minimum gelation concentration and characterization of the networked supramolecular structures formed in their gel-phase using TEM, AFM and SAXS. Our findings showed great differences in the gel-forming ability and supramolecular structure among these gelators. A simple simulation on the conformations of the three polyelectrolytes illustrated that the differences came mainly from the polyelectrolyte conformations which produced different distribution and orientation of the dendritic gelators along the backbones. When the backbone could induce the dendritic gelators to form a pre-ordered structure before gelation, the DP gelator would form nice supramolecular aggregates showing an enhanced gel-forming ability. Without this, the gel-forming ability would not be enhanced.

Abstract:4-(4′-Butoxyphenyl)phenyl-β-O-d-glucoside was synthesized as a low-molecular-mass gelator. It was able to immobilize a variety of aqueous and organic solvents in large amounts through the formation of three-dimensional self-assembled fibrillar networks. The morphologies of the aggregates depended on the nature of solvent where they were formed. Planar ribbons were observed in water, while helical ribbons were dominant in toluene and sheets in CHCl3. The xerogel from water exhibited a lamellar structure with a d-spacing of 2.45 nm as demonstrated by 1D-WAXD, indicating a bilayer structure interdigitated with butoxy tails, whereas the xerogel from CHCl3 or toluene yielded a lamellar structure with a d-spacing of 3.05 nm, implying a bilayer structure interdigitated with glycosyl heads. Increasing the content of 1,4-dioxane in water caused a gradual transformation from planar to twisted ribbons and then tubes.

Abstract:We reported here the gelation behaviors of two-component organogel system based on different acids and aminobenzothiazole derivatives in various organic solvents. Their gelation behaviors in 20 solvents were tested as new organic gelators. It was shown that the molecular skeletons and substituted groups in these compounds played a crucial role in the gelation behavior of the mixtures. Only the binary mixture of 2-aminobenzothiazole and trigonal 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid with aromatic core could form organogels in ethanol and acetone. Morphological observations reveal that the microstructures of both xerogels showed similar wrinkle-shaped domains composed of sheet-like aggregates with many holes. Spectral studies reveal the hydrogen bonding interaction between the amide of the gelator and lamellar-like structure of the aggregates in both gels. The present investigation is a perspective to provide new clues for the design of new nanomaterials and functional textile materials with special microstructures.

Abstract:Aromatic groups are introduced into the end peripherals of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) core-based organic/inorganic hybrid supramolecules to get a novel dendrimer gelator POSS-Z-Asp(OBzl) (POSS-ASP), which have eight aspartate derivative arms to make full use of strong π-π stacking forces to get strong supramolecular gels in addition to multiple hydrogen bindings and van der Waals interactions. POSS-ASP can self-assemble into three-dimensional nanoscale gel networks to provide hybrid physical gels especially with strong mechanical properties and fast-recovery behaviors. Two totally different morphologies of the connected spherical particle structures and banded ultralong fibers are observed owing to the polarity of solvents confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy techniques, expecting the existing various self-assembly models and illustrating the peripherals of the dendrimer and the polarity of solvents having huge influences in the supramolecular self-assembly mechanism. What is more, the thermal stability, rheological properties, and network architecture information have also been investigated via tube-inversion, rotational rheometer, and powder X-ray diffraction methods, the results of which confirm the two different gel formation mechanisms that make POSS-ASP to exhibit two totally different thermal and mechanical properties. Such a study reports a new gelation system in organic or organic/aqueous mixed solvents, which can be helpful for investigating the relationship of dendritic supramolecular gelation and different polarity solvents during the supramolecular self-assembly process of gelators.

Abstract:A series of bicholesteryl-based gelators with different central linker atoms C, N, and O (abbreviated to GC, GN, and GO, respectively) have been designed and synthesized. The self-assembly processes of these gelators were investigated by using gelation tests, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, field-emission transmission electron microscopy, UV/Vis absorption, IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, rheology, and contact-angle experiments. The gelation ability, self-assembly morphology, rheological, and surface-wettability properties of these gelators strongly depend on the central linker atom of the gelator molecule. Specifically, GC and GN can form gels in three different solvents, whereas GO can only form a gel in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF). Morphologies from nanofibers and nanosheets to nanospheres and nanotubes can be obtained with different central atoms. Gels of GC, GN, and GO formed in the same solvent (DMF) have different tolerances to external forces. All xerogels gave a hydrophobic surface with contact angles that ranged from 121 to 152 degrees. Quantum-chemical calculations indicate that the GC, GN, and GO molecules have very different steric structures. The results demonstrate that the central linker atom can efficiently modulate the molecular steric structure and thus regulate the supramolecular self-assembly process and properties of gelators.

Abstract:Gel is a very diverse system that has pervaded our everyday life in a variety of forms. However, the mechanism of gel formation remains ambiguous. To better understand the mechanism of gel formation, cefpiramide was selected as model compound to investigate gel formation from molecular level, with the help of experimental research and molecular dynamics simulations. Dynamic light scattering was used to detect the process of the formation of fiber aggregates by the molecules in the gel process. The results indicated that in the process of low molecular weight gels, the molecules coalesce to form a fibrous network structure to wrap the liquid. Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer and Raman spectroscopy were employed to explore the solute-solute and solute-solvent interactions, which indicated that the solvent molecules (formamide molecules) played a key role in the process of gel formation and the solute-solute interactions played a leading role. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations were employed to reveal the molecular mechanism of gel formation from molecular level.

To gel or not to gel: correlating molecular gelation with solvent parameters

Abstract:Rational design of small molecular gelators is an elusive and herculean task, despite the rapidly growing body of literature devoted to such gels over the past decade. The process of self-assembly, in molecular gels, is intricate and must balance parameters influencing solubility and those contrasting forces that govern epitaxial growth into axially symmetric elongated aggregates. Although the gelator-gelator interactions are of paramount importance in understanding gelation, the solvent-gelator specific (i.e., H-bonding) and nonspecific (dipole-dipole, dipole-induced and instantaneous dipole induced forces) intermolecular interactions are equally important. Solvent properties mediate the self-assembly of molecular gelators into their self-assembled fibrillar networks. Herein, solubility parameters of solvents, ranging from partition coefficients (log P), to Henry's law constants (HLC), to solvatochromic parameters (ET(30)), and Kamlet-Taft parameters (β, α and π), and to Hansen solubility parameters (δp, δd, δh), are correlated with the gelation ability of numerous classes of molecular gelators. Advanced solvent clustering techniques have led to the development of a priori tools that can identify the solvents that will be gelled and not gelled by molecular gelators. These tools will greatly aid in the development of novel gelators without solely relying on serendipitous discoveries. These tools illustrate that the quest for the universal gelator should be left in the hands of Don Quixote and as researchers we must focus on identifying gelators capable of gelling classes of solvents as there is likely no one gelator capable of gelling all solvents.

Abstract:Novel dendrons based on glycine and L-glutamic acid from the first generation (G1) to the third generation (G3) were synthesized and studied for their gelation properties by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), fluorescence, IR, circular dichroism (CD), and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the gelation capability of these dendrons increased from the first generation (G1) to the third generation ( G3), and that G3 exhibited the highest efficiency in forming gels. Both the focal and peripheral groups of dendrons had great effects on the formation of organogels. Hydrogen bonding and pi-pi stacking interactions were proved to be the main driving forces to form the fibrous networks at low concentrations (0.5 wt %). Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements indicate that the xerogels of the second generation (G2) from ethyl acetate and ethanol, and G3 xerogel from CH2Cl2 all display lamellar structures with the interlamellar spacing of ca. 36.0 angstrom for G2 and 40.5 angstrom for G3, respectively. Abstract:We report the formation of solvent-mediated gels as well as their hierarchical structures and rheological properties. The gelator used is a hybrid with a molecular structure of cholesterol-polyoxometalate-cholesterol, in which the cholesterol dissolves well in toluene and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), whereas the polyoxometalate cluster dissolves only in DMF. These solubility differences enable the gelator to form thermally reversible supramolecular organogels by mixing solvents of toluene and DMF when the volume fraction, f(tol), of toluene is larger than 85.7 v/v%. We found a V-shaped correlation between the gelation times, t(gel) and f(tol): t(gel) decreases from 1300 min to 2 min when ftol increases from 85.7 v/v% to 90.0 v/v%. It then increases from 2 min to 5800 min when ftol further increases from 90.0 v/v% to 100.0 v/v%. We observed ribbon-like self-assembled structures in the gels as well as a structural evolution from rigid and straight ribbons to twistable ones from f(tol) = 85.7 v/v% to f(tol) = 100.0 v/v%. These ribbons constitute two three-dimensional (3D) gel networks: one is constructed via physical connection of the rigid and straight ribbon, and the other is built up from ribbons splitting and intertwining. The latter has a better 3D gel network that offers improved rheological properties. Fundamentally, this solvent-mediated approach regulates the balance between solubility and insolubility of this gelator in the mixing solvents. It also provides a new method for the preparation of organogels.

Abstract:A novel class of dumbbell-shaped dendritic molecules with a p-terphenylene core was synthesized, and their self-assembling properties were investigated. The incorporation of bulky dendritic wedges to the central stiff aromatic scaffolds could finely time their solubility in many organic solvents. Unlike the self-assembly behavior of p-terphenylen-1,4 ''-ylenebis(dodecanamide), the p-terphenylene cored different generation dendritic molecules could form gels in several kinds of organic solvents through a cooperative effect of the pi-pi stacking, hydrogen-bonding, and van der Waals forces. Interestingly, significant fluorescence enhancement was observed after gelation. Extensive investigations with atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), rheological measurements, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, H-1 NMR, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) revealed that these dendritic molecules self-assembled into elastically interpenetrating one-dimensional nanostructures in organogels.

Abstract:Understanding the key parameters that control the self-assembly process is critical to predict self-assembly modes in multi-component systems, which will lead to the development of nanofibrous materials with tuneable properties. Enantiomeric amino acid-based low-molecular-weight gelators (LMWGs) were mixed in polar (polar protic) and aromatic apolar (aromatic) solvents and compared to their individual counterparts to probe the effect of solvent polarity on the self-assembly process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals that xerogels of individual components display hollow needles in polar protic solvents, while chiral coils are observed in aromatic solvents. In contrast, the multi-component gel displays hollow needle morphologies in both solvents, indicating similar morphologies in polar protic solvents but an entirely different nanostructure for the individual gel networks in aromatic solvents. PXRD experiments performed on the dried gels showed that the nature of the solvents plays a vital role in the co-assembly process of multi-component gels. The self-assembly modes and the gel state structure of the gels are analysed by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXS) and small-angle neutron diffraction (SANS), which reveals that the mixed gel undergoes different co-assembly modes depending on the nature of the solvent systems. This study shows that different co-assembly modes can be achieved for structurally similar components by varying the solvent polarity, demonstrating the importance of solvent choice in the self-assembly process of multi-component gels.

Abstract:The gelation behaviors of binary organogels composed of N-(4-aminobenzoyl)-L-glutamic acid diethyl ester with sebacic acid and citric acid in various organic solvents were designed and investigated. Their gelation behaviors in 20 solvents were tested as new binary organic gelators. It showed that the molecular structures and organic solvents have played a crucial role in the gelation behavior of all gelator mixtures. More carboxyl groups in molecular skeletons in the present mixture gelators are unfavorable for the gelation of organic solvents. The mixture containing sebacic acid can form 5 kinds of organogels, while another mixture containing citric acid can only form 3 kinds of organogels in different solvents. Morphological studies revealed that the gelator molecules self-assemble into different aggregates from wrinkle and belt to fiber with change of solvents. Spectral studies indicated that there existed different H-bond formations and hydrophobic forces, depending on solvents and molecular structures. The as-prepared nanomaterials have wide perspectives in nanoscience and functional textile materials with special microstructures.
