Abstract:Non-iridescent structural colors with wide viewing angles are produced by amorphous photonic structure (APS) and have received increasing attention. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate of non-iridescent, crack-free and functional structural colors, simultaneously. Here, the flexible lamellar nanostructures of graphene oxide (GO) are introduced as a black additive to fabricate amorphous, crack-free structural colors. The color hue and spectral purity of APS film can be easily tuned by adjusting the diameter of spheres and concentration of GO. Furthermore, after reduction treatment, the APS film possesses excellent visibility, flexibility and conductivity, paving the way toward their practical applications in flexible sensors, solar cells and full-color paper-like displays.
Simulation Study of Dynamic Color Modulation Based on Tunable Micro/Nano-Structure Array

Abstract:With the development of nanotechnology, it has been accessible to display colors by artificial micro/nano-structure, and then the study of structure coloring has become a hot subject, opening a new space for inkless printing. In this paper, a dynamic color modulation method based on tunable micro/nano-structure array is proposed. To tune colors on the same device, a periodic micro/nano-structure array is designed with functional material inside, which could alter the height difference between up and bottom surface precisely by applying an external voltage. It is modeled, and simulated by the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method in this work. In simulations, perpendicular incident linearly polarized light source is applied, and parameters of surface height difference and period are swept. Series reflective spectra of the devices are obtained, and their corresponding colors are calculated and marked on the CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram. Simulation results demonstrate that when the period is in the range of 100-300 nm, full-color modulation could be realized by varying the height of functional material film via applied voltage, and the peak intensities of reflective spectra are at about 60%, having high energy efficiency. This method is innovative and provides a theoretical basis for the dynamic color modulation micro/nano device, which is quite promising in fields like inkless printing and display technology.

Abstract:Structural colors generated due to light scattering from static all-dielectric metasurfaces have successfully enabled high-resolution, high-saturation and wide-gamut color printing applications. Despite recent advances, most demonstrations of these structure-dependent colors lack post-fabrication tunability that hinders their applicability for front-end dynamic display technologies. Phase-change materials (PCMs), with significant contrast of their optical properties between their amorphous and crystalline states, have demonstrated promising potentials in reconfigurable nanophotonics. Herein, we leverage a tunable all-dielectric reflective metasurface made of a newly emerged class of low-loss optical PCMs with superb characteristics, i.e., antimony trisulphide (Sb$_2$S$_3$), antimony triselenide (Sb$_2$Se$_3$), and binary germanium-doped selenide (GeSe$_3$), to realize switchable, high-saturation, high-efficiency and high-resolution structural colors. Having polarization sensitive building blocks, the presented metasurface can generate two different colors when illuminated by two orthogonally polarized incident beams. Such degrees of freedom (i.e., structural state and polarization) enable a single reconfigurable metasurface with fixed geometrical parameters to generate four distinct wide-gamut colors suitable for a wide range of applications, including tunable full-color printing and displays, information encryption, and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Structural colors (SCs) of photonic crystals (PCs) arise from selective constructive interference of incident light. Here, an ink-jet printable and rewritable block copolymer (BCP) SC display is demonstrated, which can be quickly written and erased over 50 times with resolution nearly equivalent to that obtained with a commercial office ink-jet printer. Moreover, the writing process employs an easily modified printer for position- and concentration-controlled deposition of a single, colorless, water-based ink containing a reversible crosslinking agent, ammonium persulfate. Deposition of the ink onto a self-assembled BCP PC film comprising a 1D stack of alternating layers enables differential swelling of the written BCP film and produces a full-colored SC display of characters and images. Furthermore, the information can be readily erased and the system can be reset by application of hydrogen bromide. Subsequently, new information can be rewritten, resulting in a chemically rewritable BCP SC display.

Abstract:All‐optical switching of structural colors excited by a Fabry–Pérot cavity inside a metal–dielectric–metal thin film stack is demonstrated. A reflectivity of >60%, a dynamic wavelength range of ≈220 nm, and a gamut coverage of >80% of standard RGB has been realized via the crystallization and re‐amorphization of a low loss phase change material, that is, antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3). Fine tuning the optical responses of thin‐film devices is highly attractive for emerging applications, such as optical memories, solar cells, nanophotonics, and photodetectors. Even though thin‐film technology is well established, dynamically switching the optical responses of thin films after fabrication remains challenging because of passive materials and device structures. This work demonstrates an approach for all‐optical switching of structural colors excited by a Fabry–Pérot (FP) cavity inside a metal–dielectric–metal (MDM) thin‐film stack. A low‐loss phase‐change material (PCM), that is, antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3), which is embedded in the stack, enables efficient FP cavity resonance in the visible spectrum. 1) Color reflectivity of >60%; 2) multistructural colors using a single MDM cavity; 3) a wide dynamic range of colors of up to ≈220 nm; and 4) a gamut coverage of more than 80% of standard RGB (sRGB) are achieved. The all‐optical switching is realized via the crystallization and reamorphization of Sb2S3 using continuous‐wave and pulsed lasers, respectively. The findings provide a framework for the cost‐effective realization of dynamically responsive thin‐film‐based nanophotonic devices.
Thickness-Dependent Crystallization of Ultrathin Antimony Thin Films for Monatomic Multilevel Reflectance and Phase Change Memory Designs

Abstract:Phase change materials, with more than one reflectance and resistance states, have been a subject of interest in the fields of phase change memories and nanophotonics. Although most current research focuses on rather complex phase change alloys, e.g., Ge2Sb2Te5, recently, monatomic antimony thin films have aroused a lot of interest. One prominent attractive feature is its simplicity, giving fewer reliability issues like segregation and phase separation. However, phase transformation and crystallization properties of ultrathin Sb thin films must be understood to fully incorporate them into future memory and nanophotonics devices. Here, we studied the thickness-dependent crystallization behavior of pulsed laser-deposited ultrathin Sb thin films by employing dynamic ellipsometry. We show that the crystallization temperature and phase transformation speed of as-deposited amorphous Sb thin films are thickness-dependent and can be precisely tuned by controlling the film thickness. Thus, crystallization temperature tuning by thickness can be applied to future memory and nanophotonic devices. As a proof of principle, we designed a heterostructure device with three Sb layers of varying thicknesses with distinct crystallization temperatures. Measurements and simulation results show that it is possible to address these layers individually and produce distinct and multiple reflectance profiles in a single device. In addition, we show that the immiscible nature of Sb and GaSb could open up possible heterostructure device designs with high stability after melt-quench and increased crystallization temperature. Our results demonstrate that the thickness-dependent phase transformation and crystallization dynamics of ultrathin Sb thin films have attractive features for future memory and nanophotonic devices.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Thin-film architectures are a staple in a wide range of technologies, such as semiconductor devices, optical coatings, magnetic recording, solar cells and batteries. Despite the industrial success of thin-film technology, mostly due to the easy fabrication and low cost, a fundamental drawback remains: it is challenging to alter the features of the film once fabricated. Here we report a methodology to modify the thickness and sequence of the innermost solid-state thin-film layers. We start with a thin-film stack of amorphous iron oxide and silver. By applying a suitable voltage bias and then reversing it, we can float the silver layer above or below the oxide layer by virtue of the migration of silver atoms. Scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals various sequences and thicknesses of the silver and oxide layers achieved with different experimental conditions. As a proof-of-principle, we show a dynamic change of structural colours of the stack derived from this process. Our results may offer opportunities to dynamically reconfigure thin-film-based functional nanodevices in situ.

Structural colors and enhanced resolution at the nanoscale: Local structuring of phase-change materials using focused ion beam

Abstract:In the past few years, phase-change materials have become increasingly important in nano-photonics and optoelectronics. The advantages of sizeable optical contrast between phases and the additional degree of freedom from phase switching have been the driving force. From multilevel reflectance to dynamic nanoprinting and structural colors, phase-change materials have achieved outstanding results with prospects for real-world applications. The local crystallization/amorphization of phase-change materials and the corresponding reflectance tunning by the crystallized/amorphized region size have potential applications for future dynamic display devices. Although the resolution is much higher than current display devices, the pixel sizes in those devices are limited by the locally switchable structure size. Here, we reduce the spot sizes further by using ion beams instead of laser beams and dramatically increase the pixel density, demonstrating the capability of having superior resolution. In addition, the power to sputter away materials can be utilized in creating nanostructures with relative height differences and local contrast. Our experiment focuses on one archetypal phase-change material, Sb$_2$Se$_3$, prepared by pulsed-laser deposition on a reflective gold substrate. We demonstrate that we can produce structural colors and achieve reflectance tunning by focused ion beam milling/sputtering of phase change materials at the nanoscale. Furthermore, we show that the local structuring of phase-change materials by focused ion beam can be used to produce high pixel density display devices with superior resolutions.

Abstract:Electrical switching of nanophotonic structural color elements is a promising approach towards addressable color switching pixels for next generation reflective displays. However, electrical switching between the primary colors to colorless near-white state remains a challenge. Here, we present a reversible electrical switching approach, relying on the electrocoagulation of Ag nanoparticles between silicon nanostructures that support Mie resonances. The electrodeposited Ag nanoparticles enable the excitation of the hybrid plasmon-Mie resonance as supported on Ag-silicon nanostructures, resulting in a large spectral transformation. Importantly, this process is reversible. This device design outperforms other designs in terms of electrotonic color control since it is highly stable and reliable for use in high-resolution reflective displays, such as colored electronic papers and smart display glass, where the combination is scalable to other nanostructure designs and electrolytic solutions.

Abstract:Nanoprint-based color display using either extrinsic structural colors or intrinsic emission colors is a rapidly emerging research field for high-density information storage. Nevertheless, advanced applications, e. g., dynamic full-color display and secure information encryption, call for demanding requirements on in situ color change, nonvacuum operation, prompt response, and favorable reusability. By transplanting the concept of electrical/chemical doping in the semiconductor industry, we demonstrate an in situ reversible color nanoprinting paradigm via photon doping, triggered by the interplay of structural colors and photon emission of lead halide perovskite gratings. It solves the aforementioned challenges at one go. By controlling the pumping light, the synergy between interlaced mechanisms enables color tuning over a large range with a transition time on the nanosecond scale in a nonvacuum environment. Our design presents a promising realization of in situ dynamic color nanoprinting and will empower the advances in structural color and classified nanoprinting.

Abstract:A flexible color display with multimode reversible switching between transparent and colorful states based on the combination of responsive photonic crystals and quantum dots is developed. The system presents a dynamic mechanochromic property and photochromic behavior, which can be used in wearable sensing, advanced anti‐counterfeiting, and highly secure encryption. Integrating responsive photonic crystals (RPCs) and quantum dots (QDs) effectively to realize multimode dynamic color regulation is of great significance for promoting advances in color display science. Herein, a new type of flexible dynamic color display with multimode reversible switching between transparent and colorful states based on the combination of RPCs and CdTe QDs is designed. This unique system is fabricated by encapsulating a thin layer of ordered arrays of SiO2@CdTe@SiO2 (SQS) colloids with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), which generates an elastic film with sandwiched structure of PDMS/SQS/PDMS. Owing to the similarity in the optical properties of PDMS and SQS, the display is highly transparent in the normal state. Moreover, the resultant flexible display exhibits obvious change in color by mechanical stimuli or UV exposure. Finally, the ability to display joints motion amplitudes of human body as well as the applications in advanced security is demonstrated.

Abstract:The development of visible-light-responsive inorganic photoreversible color switching materials (PCSMs) for constructing long-legible rewritable papers is fascinating owing to resource sustainability. This work reports the colloidal synthesis of WO3-x hierarchical nanostructures constructed by 2D thin nanostructures with crystalline/amorphous homojunctions that show excellent visible-light-responsive color switching properties. The surface-bound hydroxyl ligands, oxygen vacancies, and homojunctions could enhance absorption in the visible region, improve charge separation and transfer efficiencies, and act as internal sacrificial electron donors for scavenging photogenerated holes, endowing WO3-x hierarchical nanostructures with high visible-light-responsive photoreductive activity. The protons localized in WO3-x hierarchical nanostructures promote photoreduction for the coloration process and stabilize metastable W5+ species for the discoloration process, enabling rapid coloration in 30 s upon 437 nm light illumination and excellent color stability under ambient air conditions (similar to 51 days). A light-printable rewritable paper (LPRP) fabricated by the WO3-x hierarchical nanostructures exhibits a grayish white background, high reusability (>100 times), long legible time (>30 days), negligible interference by office light, and high color contrast. Moreover, the LPRP can be used for direct visible-light-responsive laser printing, which is fully compatible with current printing technology. This work opens an avenue for designing visible-light-responsive inorganic PCSMs for LPRP and utilizing visible light for practical applications.
Constructing on-demand single/multi-color transitioning fabrics with photocatalysis/photothermal-armed deficient semiconductors

Abstract:On-demand color switching systems that utilize synchronized semiconductor-catalyzed reduction and photothermal-accelerated oxidation in liquid/solid are highly appealing. Herein, on-demand single/multi-color switching fabrics have been constructed by using defective SnO 2 :Sb-based color switching systems. SnO 2 :Sb nanocrystals with the suitable doping concentration accord lattices with abundant free electrons, conferring high photocatalytic and photothermal performances. A well-crafted set of dual light-responsive semiconductor-catalyzed systems with rapid color change can be attained via the homogenous mixture of SnO 2 :Sb with suitable redox dyes to produce single-color (RGB (red, green, blue)) and multi-color transitioning (purple and green) systems. The illumination of these systems by 450 nm light triggers rapid photocatalytic discoloration, while irradiation by 980 nm light confers the photothermal effect that accelerates recoloration in air. Besides, the inks can be extended to rewritable fabrics by embedding the nanocrystals and redox dyes into hydroxyethyl cellulose (as the polymer matrix) and then coating on hydrophobic cotton fabrics to produce photo-switchable fabrics with excellent single/multi-color response. By exploiting the dual light interactions with the semiconductor-mediated systems, various images/letters can be remotely printed and erased on the rewritable fabrics which show promise for potential applications as information storage media and visual sensors. Importantly, the present rewritable fabric shows good stability and reversibility. The present work provides insights into the development of novel color-switching materials.

Synthesis of MnO 2 –Ag Nanojunctions with Plasmon-Enhanced Photocatalytic and Photothermal Effects for Constructing Rewritable Mono-/Multi-Color Fabrics

Abstract:Semiconductor-mediated photoreversible color switching systems (PCSSs) have great potential to replace traditional photochromic materials, and the key is to obtain semiconductors with unique photocatalytic and photothermal features. Herein, we have developed MnO2-Ag nanojunctions with plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic and photothermal effects for PCSSs. MnO2-Ag nanojunctions are solvothermally synthesized with Mn(CH3COO)3, KMnO4, and AgNO3 in diethylene glycol as precursors, and they are composed of MnO2 nanoparticles (∼30 nm) that are decorated by Ag nanodots (∼6 nm). The presence of Ag confers an enhanced visible photoabsorption with a narrow band gap for MnO2 (Eg = 1.82 eV) and a weak/broad photoabsorption tail (∼875 nm) compared to that of pure MnO2 (2.45 eV, ∼625 nm). By coupling MnO2-Ag nanojunctions with various redox dyes, some PCSS inks can be obtained, and especially, the inks containing hydroxyethyl cellulose could be used to prepare rewritable fabrics. When inks and fabrics are irradiated by 475 nm light, rapid discoloration can occur, resulting from the photocatalytic reduction of the dye. Contrarily, the irradiation of 808 nm light promotes the rapid recoloration since Ag nanodots with plasmonic effects in the nanojunctions can absorb light to generate heat, which facilitates the oxidization of leuco dyes in air. Consequently, remote printing of figures was attained on the rewritable fabrics via 475 nm light illumination, and then, the erasure was performed by 808 nm light illumination in an O2 atmosphere, with high reversibility and cycling stability. Therefore, MnO2-Ag nanojunctions have tremendous promise for rewritable media, and the introduction of metal-semiconductor junctions as a nanophotocatalyst offers new insights for PCSSs.

Using reaction conditions that are mild in temperature and strong in reducing power allows the synthesis of amorphous Sb-NP stabilized with organic ligands. Exchanging the organic ligand 1-octanethiol by iodide enabled to investigate the unusual strong stability of this metastable material through simultaneous thermal analysis combining differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Additionally, in situ high temperature powder x-ray diffraction (p-XRD) shows a significant increase in stabilization of the amorphous phase in comparison to thin layered, 1D confined Sb or bulk material. Further, it is shown with scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) experiments that the optical response of the different phases in Sb-NP make the distinctness of each phase possible. It is proposed that the Sb-NP introduced here can serve as a 3D-confined optically addressable nanomaterial of miniaturized phase change memory devices.
Large-Scale and Wide-Gamut Coloration at the Diffraction Limit in Flexible, Self-Assembled Hierarchical Nanomaterials

Abstract:Unveiling physical phenomena that generate controllable structural coloration is at the center of significant research efforts due to the platform potential for the next generation of printing, sensing, displays, wearable optoelectronics components, and smart fabrics. Colors based on e-beam facilities possess high resolutions above 100k dots per inch (DPI), but limit manufacturing scales up to 4.37 cm2 , while requiring rigid substrates that are not flexible. State-of-art scalable techniques, on the contrary, provide either narrow gamuts or small resolutions. A common issue of current methods is also a heterogeneous resolution, which typically changes with the color printed. Here, a structural coloration platform with broad gamuts exceeding the red, green, and blue (RGB) spectrum in inexpensive, thermally resistant, flexible, and metallic-free structures at constant 101 600 DPI (at the diffraction limit), obtained via mass-production manufacturing is demonstrated. This platform exploits a previously unexplored physical mechanism, which leverages the interplay between strong scattering modes and optical resonances excited in fully 3D dielectric nanostructures with suitably engineered longitudinal profiles. The colors obtained with this technology are scalable to any area, demonstrated up to the single wafer (4 in.). These results open real-world applications of inexpensive, high-resolution, large-scale structural colors with broad chromatic spectra.
Uncovering the physical properties, structural characteristics, and electronic application of superlattice-like Ti/Sb phase-change thin films

Abstract:Abstract Superlattice-like (SLL) Ti/Sb thin films were proposed and investigated from the viewpoint of physical properties, structural characteristics, and electronic application. Magnetron sputtering was employed to deposit the SLL Ti/Sb thin films with different thickness ratios. In-situ resistance–temperature measurement indicates that the crystallization temperature, crystallization-activation energy, and data-retention capacity increase significantly and the resistance drift index reduces with an increment in thickness ratio of the Ti to Sb layer, meaning higher amorphous thermal stability and reliability of SLL Ti/Sb thin films. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra reveal that the inserted Ti layer can inhibit grain growth and refine the grain size, causing remarkable improvement of thermal stability and crystalline resistance. Analyses of x-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy demonstrate that the thickness fluctuation of SLL Ti/Sb thin films becomes smaller and the surface topography becomes smoother, respectively. The Avrami exponent of the SLL (Ti 3 Sb 7 ) 5 thin film reflects the growth-dominated crystallization mechanism, implying a rapid phase transition speed. Phase-change memory cells based on the SLL (Ti 3 Sb 7 ) 5 thin film can realize a reversible SET/RESET operation under an electrical pulse with a width of 100 ns. The RESET power consumption was estimated to be much lower than that of traditional Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 material. The above results strongly prove that the suitable SLL structure of Ti/Sb thin films have tremendous potential in the area of high-temperature and low-power electronic storage.
