Abstract:The structure, cell volume and lattice constants of beta-octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro1,3,5,7- tetrazocine (beta-HMX) crystal are studied by using the classical molecular dynamics method. The variations of cell volume and lattice constants are presented and discussed under different pressures and temperatures. The main purpose of the present work is to understand effect of different force fields, the CVFF and PCFF force fields were used instead of usual COMPASS. It is found that the cell volume is less satisfactory, and there was an abrupt change at 370 K and 440 K for the lattice constants and cell volume with CVFF force field. However, for PCFF force field, an abrupt change occurred at 360 K and 430 K, respectively. It means that beta-HMX may have phase transitions at these temperatures in accordance with experimental observation. It is suggested that selection of suitable force field play an important role in achieving desired accuracy of simulation results.
Proton Transfer in Phase IV of Solid Hydrogen and Deuterium

Abstract:The recent discovery of phase IV of solid hydrogen and deuterium consisting of two alternate layers of graphenelike three-molecule rings and unbound H2 molecules have generated great interests. However, vibrational nature of phase IV remains poorly understood. Here, we report a peculiar proton transfer and a simultaneous rotation of three molecule rings in graphenelike layers predicted by ab initio variable cell molecular dynamics simulations for phase IV of solid hydrogen and deuterium at pressure ranges of from 250 to 350 GPa and temperature range of from 300 to 500 K. This proton transfer is intimately related to the particular elongation of molecules in graphenelike layers, and it becomes more pronounced with increasing pressure at the course of larger elongation of molecules. As the consequence of proton transfer, hydrogen molecules in graphenelike layers are short lived and hydrogen vibration is strongly anharmonic. Our findings provide direct explanations on the observed abrupt increase of Raman width at the formation of phase IV and its large increase with pressure.

Abstract:We study the structural and electronic properties of phase III of solid hydrogen using accurate many-electron theories and compare the results to state-of-the-art experimental findings. The atomic structures of phase III modeled by C2/c-24 crystals are fully optimized on the level of second-order perturbation theory, demonstrating that previously employed structures optimized on the level of approximate density functionals exhibit errors in the H2 bond lengths that cause significant discrepancies in the computed quasiparticle band gaps and vibrational frequencies compared to experiment. Using these optimized atomic structures, we study the band gap closure and change in vibrational frequencies as a function of pressure. Our findings are in good agreement with recent experimental observations and may prove useful in resolving long-standing discrepancies between experimental estimates of metallization pressures possibly caused by disagreeing pressure calibrations.

Density functional theory study of phase IV of solid hydrogen

Abstract:We have studied solid hydrogen up to pressures of 300 GPa and temperatures of 350 K using density functional theory methods and have found "mixed structures" that are more stable than those predicted earlier. Mixed structures consist of alternate layers of strongly bonded molecules and weakly bonded graphene-like sheets. Quasi-harmonic vibrational calculations show that mixed structures are the most stable at room temperature over the pressure range 250-295 GPa. These structures are stabilized with respect to strongly-bonded molecular phases at room temperature by the presence of lower-frequency vibrational modes arising from the graphene-like sheets. Our results for the mixed structures are consistent with the experimental Raman data [M. I. Eremets and I. A. Troyan, Nature Mater. 10 927 (2011) and R. T. Howie et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 125501 (2012)]. We find that mixed phases are reasonable structural models for phase IV of hydrogen.

Abstract:The high-pressure behavior of solid hydrogen has been investigated by in situ Raman spectroscopy upon compression to 300 GPa at ambient temperature. The hydrogen vibron frequency begins to decrease after it initially increases with pressure up to 38 GPa. This softening behavior suggests the weakening of the intramolecular bond and the increased intermolecular interactions. Above 237 GPa, the vibron frequency softens very rapidly with pressure at a much higher rate than that of phase III, corresponding to transformation from phase III into phase IV. The phase transition sequence has been confirmed from phase I to phase III and then to phase IV at 208 and 237 GPa, respectively. Previous theoretical calculations lead to the proposal of an energetically favorable monoclinic C2/c structure for phase III and orthorhombic Pbcn structure for phase IV. Up to 304 GPa, solid hydrogen is not yet an alkali metal since the sample is still transparent.
Finite-temperature Infrared and Raman Spectra of High-Pressure Hydrogen from First-Principles Molecular Dynamics

Abstract:Finite-temperature infrared and Raman spectra of theoretically proposed stable structures C2/c and Pc of high-pressure solid hydrogen are calculated from time correlation functions of dipole moments and polarizabilities extracted from first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. Calculated spectra are much improved compared with those obtained from density functional perturbation theory at zero temperature, which suggests the significance of finite-temperature effects in both spectra. The excellent agreement between the calculated spectra of the C2/c structure and experimental results supports the theory that C2/c is the structure of phase III. The high-frequency Raman vibron mode of the Pc structure is also well reproduced compared with experimental spectra. However, the energy of the low-frequency Raman vibron mode of the Pc structure is underestimated up to 16%. This suggests that the atomic structure of the strongly bonded layer in phase IV is well predicted, while the weakly bonded layer still differs from the real structure somehow. In addition, we find that diffusion in the weakly bonded layer of the Pc structure is strong and the layer displays several features of a two-dimensional liquid.

Abstract:The first high pressure study of solid hydrazinium monochloride has been performed by in situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X‐ray diffraction (XRD) experiments in diamond anvil cell (DAC) up to 39.5 and 24.6 GPa, respectively. The structure of phase I at room temperature is confirmed to be space group C2/c by the Raman spectral analysis and Rietveld refinement of the XRD pattern. A structural transition from phase I to II is observed at 7.3 GPa. Pressure‐induced position variation of hydrogen atoms in NH3+ unit during the phase transition is attributed to the formation of N―H…Cl hydrogen‐bonds, which play a vital role in the stability and subsequent structural changes of this high energetic material under pressure. This inference is proved from the abnormal pressure shifts and obvious Fermi resonance in NH stretching mode of N2H5+ ion in the Raman experiment. Finally, a further transition from phase II to III accompanied with a slight internal distortion in the N2H5+ ions occurs above 19.8 GPa, and phase III persists up to 39.5 GPa. Quasi-molecular and atomic phases of dense solid hydrogen

Abstract:The high-pressure phases of solid hydrogen are of fundamental interest and relevant to the interior of giant planets; however, knowledge of these phases is far from complete. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) techniques were applied to a structural search, yielding hitherto unexpected high-pressure phases of solid hydrogen at pressures up to 5 TPa. An exotic quasi-molecular mC24 structure (space group C2/c, stable at 0.47-0.59 TPa) with two types of intramolecular bonds was predicted, providing a deeper understanding of molecular dissociation in solid hydrogen, which has been a mystery for decades. We further predicted the existence of two atomic phases: (i) the oC12 structure (space group Cmcm, stable at > 2.1 TPa), consisting of planar H3 clusters, and (ii) the cI16 structure, previously observed in lithium and sodium, stable above 3.5 TPa upon consideration of the zero-point energy. This work clearly revised the known zero-temperature and high-pressure (>0.47 TPa) phase diagram for solid hydrogen and has implications for the constituent structures of giant planets.

Abstract:Two high density structures beta- and gamma-LiAlH4 are detected in LiAlH4, a promising hydrogen storage compound, upon compression in diamond anvil cells, investigated with synchrotron X-ray diffraction and first-principle calculations. The joint of the experimental and theoretical results has confirmed the sequence of the pressure-induced structural phase transitions from alpha-LiAlH4 (space group P2(1)/c) to beta-LiAlH4 (P2(1)/c-6C symmetry), and then to gamma-LiAlH4 (space group Pnc2), which are not reported in previous literatures. At the alpha to beta transition point for LiAlH4, the estimated difference in cell volume is about 20%, while the transformation from beta to gamma phase is with a volume drop smaller than 1%. The alpha to beta phase transition is accompanied by the local structure change from a AlH4 tetrahedron into a AlH6 octahedron, which contributes to a large volume collapse. Abstract:The relatively low-pressure layered hexagonal Li3B2 (h-Li3B2) phase under 20GPa was identified on the basis of ab initio calculations. Inspired by the high-temperature superconductivity of metallic hydrogen, this study obtained a novel hexagonal Li2B2H (h-Li2B2H) structure by replacing Li-2 with H. Contrast to h-Li3B2, h-Li2B2H may be directly synthesized by -LiB and H-2 under pressure. The two phases exhibited electronic features similar to those in MgB2 and were expected to be good superconductors. Electron-phonon coupling calculations illustrated that the layered h-Li3B2 structure is superconducting at 2K with =0.39 under 20GPa. Moreover, h-Li2B2H was predicted to possess a large electron-phonon coupling parameter of approximately 0.81 and a resulting superconducting critical temperature about 28K at 20GPa. The introduced H in the h-Li2B2H structure had strong vibrational energy due to its light atomic mass and could enhance the energy of sigma and bonds by bonding with Li. Thus, the introduced H in the h-Li2B2H structure is important due to its enhanced electron-phonon coupling and superconducting property.

Abstract:Vibrational spectroscopy of the intramolecular stretching mode (vibron) of the hydrogen isotopes has been used for the past 20 years in different laboratories using various techniques to probe phase diagrams of this system under extreme conditions. Available vibrational spectroscopy data in hydrogen and deuterium to 200 GPa at 10-300 K are analyzed and reassessed to identify the existence of an additional molecular phase (I') to phases I, II, and III previously identified at megabar pressures. The results do not support the existence of phase I' in the pressure-temperature range studied. Abstract:In a recent communication ( Angew. Chem. Int. Ed . 2024 , 63 , e202317312), Kalita et al. studied In 4 H + system within the frame of single-reference approximation (SRA) and found that the global energy minimum ( 1 a ) adopted the singlet state and a planar tetracoordinate hydrogen (ptH), while the second lowest isomer ( 1 b ) located 3.0 kcal/mol above 1 a and adopted the triplet state as well as non-planar structure with a quasi-ptH. They assessed the reliability of SRA by checking the T1-diagnostic values of coupled cluster calculations. However, according to our multi-configurational second-order perturbation theory calculations at the CASPT2(12,13)/aug-cc-pVQZ (aug-cc-pVQZ-PP for In) level, both 1 a and 1 b exhibit obvious multi-referential characters, as reflected by their largest reference coefficients of 0.928 (86.1 %) and 0.938 (88.0 %), respectively. Moreover, 1 b is 5.05 kcal/mol lower than 1 a at this level, that is, what can be observed in In 4 H + system is the quasi-ptH.

Structures of solid hydrogen at 300K

Abstract:We present results predicting experimentally measurable structural quantities from molecular dynamics studies of hydrogen. In doing this, we propose a paradigm shift for experimentalists -- that the predictions from such calculations should be seen as the most likely hypotheses. Specifically, the experimental results should be aiming to distinguish between the candidate low-energy structures, rather than aiming to solve the simplest structure consistent with the data. We show that the room temperature X-ray diffraction patterns for hydrogen phases I, III, IV and V are very similar, with only small peaks denoting symmetry-breaking from the hcp Phase I. Because they incorporate atomic displacements the XRD patterns implied by molecular dynamics calculations are very different from those arising from the static minimum enthalpy structures found by structure searching. Simulations also show that within Phase I the molecular becomes increasingly confined to the basal plane and suggest the possibility of an unusual critical point terminating the Phase I-III boundary line.

Hexagonal to Monoclinic Phase Transition in Dense Hydrogen Phase III Detected by High-Pressure NMR

Abstract:Conclusive crystal structure determination of the high pressure phases of hydrogen remains elusive due to lack of core electrons and vanishing wave vectors, rendering standard high-pressure experimental methods moot. Ab-initio DFT calculations have shown that structural polymorphism might be solely resolvable using high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at mega-bar pressures, however technical challenges have precluded such experiments thus far. Here, we present in-situ high-pressure high-resolution NMR experiments in hydrogen phase III between 181 GPa and 208 GPa at room temperature. Our spectra suggest that at lower pressures phase III adopts a hexagonal P6122 crystal structure, transitioning into a monoclinic C2/c phase at about 197 GPa. The high resolution spectra are in excellent agreement with earlier structural and spectral predictions and underline the possibility of a subtle P6122 to C2/c phase transition in hydrogen phase III. These experiments show the importance of a combination of ab-initio calculations and low-Z sensitive spectral probes in high-pressure science in elucidating the structural complexity of the most abundant element in our universe.

Abstract:The structures of solid hydrogen under high pressures have been revisited by using first-principles electronic structure calculations. Focusing on the stability, the intramolecular bond strength of hydrogen molecules in solid hydrogen, and the cell volume, we made a comparison study on seven structures including P21/c-24, C2/c-24, P6122-36, Pc-48, Pca21-48, Cmca-4, and Cmca-12 with the recently proposed strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) functional and three conventional exchange-correlation functionals, namely Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE), Becke-Lee-Yang-Parr (BLYP), and van der Waals-density functional (vdW-DF). On one hand, with the SCAN functional the C2/c structure takes the minimum static lattice enthalpies in the pressure range from 150 to 450 GPa, which agrees with the recent synchrotron infrared spectroscopic study and is similar to the result of the BLYP functional. On the other hand, the vibration frequencies of hydrogen molecules calculated by the SCAN functional match well with the experimental characteristic IR and Raman peaks, which indicates that the SCAN functional gives a reasonable estimation of the bond strength or bond length of hydrogen molecules in solid hydrogen, while the BLYP and vdW-DF functionals overestimate the bond strength. All SCAN, PBE, BLYP, and vdW-DF functionals give a good estimation of the unit cell volumes. Thus, the structures optimized with the SCAN functional can be an excellent starting point for advanced works on solid hydrogen.

Abstract:High-pressure transitions are thought to modify hydrogen molecules to a molecular metallic solid and finally to an atomic metal(1), which is predicted to have exotic physical properties and the topology of a two-component (electron and proton) superconducting superfluid condensate(2,3). Therefore, understanding such transitions remains an important objective in condensed matter physics(4,5). However, measurements of the crystal structure of solid hydrogen, which provides crucial information about the metallization of hydrogen under compression, are lacking for most high-pressure phases, owing to the considerable technical challenges involved in X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements under extreme conditions. Here we present a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of solid hydrogen at pressures of up to 254 gigapascals that reveals the crystallographic nature of the transitions from phase I to phases III and IV. Under compression, hydrogen molecules remain in the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystal lattice structure, accompanied by a monotonic increase in anisotropy. In addition, the pressure-dependent decrease of the unit cell volume exhibits a slope change when entering phase IV, suggesting a second-order isostructural phase transition. Our results indicate that the precursor to the exotic two-component atomic hydrogen may consist of electronic transitions caused by a highly distorted hcp Brillouin zone and molecular-symmetry breaking.
High-pressure II-III phase transition in solid hydrogen: Insights from state-of-the-art ab initio calculations

Abstract:The high-pressure II-III phase transition in solid hydrogen is investigated using the random phase approximation and diffusion Monte Carlo. Good agreement between the methods is found confirming that an accurate treatment of exchange and correlation increases the transition pressure by more than 100 GPa with respect to semilocal density functional approximations. Using an optimized hybrid functional, we then reveal a low-symmetry structure for phase II generated by an out-of-plane librational instability of the C2/c phase III structure. This instability weakens the in-plane polarization of C2/c leading to the well-known experimental signatures of the II-III phase transition such as a sharp shift in vibron frequency, infrared activity and $c/a$ lattice parameter ratio. Finally, we discuss the zero-point vibrational energy that plays an important role in stabilizing phase III at lower pressures.

Plaquette-type valence bond solid state in the $J_1$-$J_2$ square-lattice Heisenberg model

Abstract:We utilize Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) and Fully Augmented Matrix Product States (FAMPS) methods to investigate the Valence Bond Solid (VBS) phase in the $J_1$-$J_2$ square lattice Heisenberg model. To differentiate between the Columnar Valence Bond Solid (CVBS) and Plaquette Valence Bond Solid (PVBS) phases, we introduce an anisotropy $\Delta_y$ in the nearest neighboring coupling in the $y$-direction, aiming at detecting the possible spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking in the VBS phase. In the calculations, we push the bond dimension to as large as $D = 25000$ in FAMPS, simulating systems at a maximum size of $14 \times 14$. With a careful extrapolation of the truncation errors and appropriate finite-size scaling, followed by finite $\Delta_y$ scaling analysis of the VBS dimer order parameters, we identify the VBS phase as a PVBS type, meaning there is no spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking in the VBS phase. This study not only resolves the long-standing issue of the characterization of the VBS order in the $J_1$-$J_2$ square lattice Heisenberg model but also highlights the capabilities of FAMPS in the study of two-dimensional quantum many-body systems.

First-principles Structure Prediction of Two-dimensional HCN Polymorphs obtained via Formal Molecular Polymerization

Abstract:In the present study, ab initio evolutionary algorithms and heuristic approach were employed to predict new two-dimensional (2D) crystalline phases based on HCN and HNC molecular building blocks. Our research revealed thirty-seven 2D HCN and HNC structures within six topological families which contain N 1 , N 2 dimers, N 3 trimers, infinite poly-N motifs, or zigzag C-C chains. HSE06 functional calculations indicated that 2D 1 Pmn 2 1 HCN, 2 Pma 2 HCN, 3 P 2 1 2 1 2 HCN, and 6 Pbcm HNC are direct semiconductors with band gaps Eg of 5.1, 4.2, 4.3, and 2.8 eV, respectively, and isovalent elements substitutions (C by Ge/Si, H by F) were used to tune the electronic band gaps of resulting 2D structures (E g =1.2~7.4 eV). Moreover, it was found that the high in-plane Young's modulus (330.3~445.8 N/m) and strong tolerance of direct band transitions (E g =1.2~5.3 eV) against the external biaxial strains in these four 2D HCN structures endows them with potential applications for photofunctional and flexible electronic devices. Finally, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations showed that at 50 GPa and 400 K, HCN molecules in bulk I4mm hydrogen cyanide molecular crystal can extend to 2D HCN covalent nets.

Abstract:Solid hydrogen in the atomic bcc structure is studied using a variational quantum Monte Carlo approach. Various magnetic phases are investigated at densities between Wigner-Seitz radius of ${\mathit{r}}_{\mathit{s}}$=1.6 and 3.0 a.u. Correlated wave functions of Jastrow-Slater form are used with their antisymmetric part constructed from the Kohn-Sham self-consistent orbitals. A transition from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase at lower density is found at ${\mathit{r}}_{\mathit{s}}$=2.4. There is, however, no evidence for metastable partial ferromagnetic structure.
