Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a two-dimensional layered material, has attracted ever-growing interest as one of the most promising non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, its catalytic efficiency is far from that of the best-performing Pt-based catalysts due to insufficient active sites and poor conductivity. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate that the catalytic activity of MoS2 could be improved through synergistic effects between the graphene substrate and Ni atom adsorption. Following this result, we designed and synthesized dual-modified MoS2 nanosheets with nanoporous Ni and reduced graphite oxide, which show a low onset potential (85 mV), a small Tafel slope (71.3 mV dec–1), and a high cycling stability as HER catalysts. Abstract:An efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution has been developed based upon in situ reduction of MoS2 on ordered mesoporous carbon nanospheres (MoS2/MCNs). The properties of MoS2/MCNs were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Polarisation curves and electrochemical impedance measurements were obtained for MoS2/MCNs modified glassy carbon electrodes. The MoS2/MCNs exhibit high catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution with a low overpotential and a very high current density. A theory outlining the origins of the Tafel slope for a Volmer-Heyrovsky (rate determining step) mechanism of hydrogen evolution at MoS2 catalytic edge sites is presented.

Abstract:A confined growth strategy of MoS2 is proposed by using a 2D metal‐organic framework to expose more edge sites and hence largely enhance its hydrogen evolution reaction performance. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the exposed active edge sites of MoS2 are limited due to its intrinsic stacking property. Herein, a highly exposed MoS2 hybrid electrocatalyst is prepared by a confined strategy of the pores of a 2D metal‐organic framework (MOF). A low overpotential of 76 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 73 mV dec−1 are achieved, which indicated greater efficiency than pristine MoS2. The denotative growth of MoS2 from the internal pore of 2D MOF on the surface effectively prevents its stacking and exposes much more active edge sites. Experimental results show that parts of Co are incorporated into MoS2, producing strong electronic interaction between Co and Mo atoms and accounting for the excellent HER activity of MoS2. This work demonstrates a confined strategy to prepare nanomaterials with highly exposed edge sites and enhanced intrinsic activity.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) properties of the catalysts are significantly dependent on their microscopic structure. Interfacial engineering at the atomic level is the main approach to design high performance of electrocatalysts. Herein, an interfacial modulation strategy is proposed to fabricate monolayer amorphous MoS2 nanoparticles with an average of 3.5 nm in diameter stuck in multilayer N-doped carbon (MoS2/NC), boosting a high HER activity. The amorphous MoS2 could provide more edge active sites and NC layers endow the fast electron transfer. The XPS, Raman spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the C–S bond in MoS2/NC provides the fast electron transfer and decreases H binding energy. Benefiting the unique sandwiched structure, the MoS2/NC boosts a low overpotential of 152.6 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 60.3 mV dec−1, and outstanding long-term stability with 97.3% retention for over 24 h. This strategy provides a new opportunity and development of interfacial engineering for turning intrinsic catalytic activity for water splitting.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is limited in alkaline and acid solution because the active sites are on the finite edge with extended basal plane remaining inert. Herein, we activated the interfacial S sites by coupling with Ru nanoparticles on the inert basal plane of MoS2 nanosheets. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation and experimental results show that the interfacial S electronic structure was modulated. And the results of ΔGH* demonstrate that the adsorption of H on the MoS2 was also optimized. With the advantage of interfacial S sites activation, the Ru-MoS2 needs only overpotential of 110 and 98 mV to achieve 10 mA·cm−2 in both 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH solution, respectively. This strategy paves a new way for activating the basal plane of other transition metal sulfide electrocatalysts for improving the HER performance.

Abstract:Fabricating a cost effective hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst without using precious metal elements is in crucial demand for environmentally-benign energy production. In this work, the thin and edge-rich molybdenum disulfide nanosheets, with carbon doped in the interlayers and decorated on graphene, were developed by a facile solvothermal process. The as-synthesized nanohybrids exhibited high catalytic ability for the hydrogen evolution electrochemical reaction with an onset overpotential of 0.165 mV and a Tafel slope of 46 mV dec(-1). Furthermore, the prepared nanohybrids also showed better durability and stability. Our work may lead to a potential method for in situ production of metal carbide-sulphur hybrid nanomaterials with promising applications for the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract:In this work, it is demonstrated that coordinated adsorption/desorption kinetics can effectively extend the high current density growth rate range of the Mo2C electrocatalyst. Through density functional theory calculations and experiments, three typical types of S/Mo2C electrocatalysts are systematically investigated. Surface sulfur‐decorated Mo2C exhibits the most coordinated adsorption/desorption kinetics with enhanced charge redistribution and in‐plane polarization field for efficient hydrogen evolution. Maintaining a consistently high current density growth rate in the hydrogen evolution reaction is highly challenging because the limited mass transfer rate at the electrode/electrolyte interface will make the adsorption reaction as the rate‐determining step associated with a low hydrogen coverage, exhibiting a Tafel slope >120 mV dec–1. Therefore, maximizing the current density range in which the desorption reaction is the rate‐determining step, can significantly reduce the overpotential. Herein, a surface sulfur decoration strategy is presented to modify the molybdenum carbide electrocatalyst and achieve coordinated adsorption/desorption kinetics, leading to a dominant Volmer–Heyrovsky mechanism across a wide range of current densities. Both experimental and theoretical results validate the surface charge redistribution induced by sulfur decoration, which subtly optimizes the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption and enhances the in‐plane polarization field. As a result, the as‐obtained surface sulfur‐decorated molybdenum carbide electrocatalyst exhibits coordinated adsorption/desorption kinetics and efficient hydrogen delivery, ultimately surpassing the commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst for high‐efficiency hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:MoS2 has been considered as a potential replacement for Pt‐based catalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction. But the lack of sufficient active sites limits the intrinsic activity of MoS2‐based catalysts. Here, we propose a general strategy to synthesize ultra‐small MoS2 nanosheets grown evenly on carbon substrates to maximize the active sites by exposing more edge positions and inducing MoS2 phase transition. It is found that Ru can assist MoS2 to grow vertically and uniformly on the surface of carbon substrates by in situ derivatization to improve the catalytic activity effectively. MoS2 nanosheets on the substrates are much smaller and denser than those prepared without Ru or with other metal elements. Electrocatalysis results revealed that the number of active sites and conductivity of the optimized Ru‐MoS2@CSs increase obviously, and the overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 is much lower than that of MoS2@CSs and metal (Co, Ni)‐MoS2@CSs, respectively, at 1.0 M KOH.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a facile method for the synthesis of MoS2 nanosheet/ MoS2 nanowire homostructures by growing MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of MoS2 nanowires. Benefiting from the uniform coating of MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of MoS2 nanowires, the MoS2 nanosheet/ MoS2 nanowire homostructures highly expose their electrocatalytic active edge sites and exhibit an enhanced electrocatalytic performance. It demonstrates a low overpotential of 107 mV at 10 mA/cm(2) and a small Tafel slope of 64 mV/dec in 0.5 M H2SO4. This work provides an inspiration for the design of efficient electrocatalysts with no stacking and aggregation structure.

Abstract:Abstract The lack of highly efficient, inexpensive catalysts severely hinders large-scale application of electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for producing hydrogen. MoS 2 as a low-cost candidate suffers from low catalytic performance. Herein, taking advantage of its tri-layer structure, we report a MoS 2 nanofoam catalyst co-confining selenium in surface and cobalt in inner layer, exhibiting an ultra-high large-current-density HER activity surpassing all previously reported heteroatom-doped MoS 2 . At a large current density of 1000 mA cm −2 , a much lower overpotential of 382 mV than that of 671 mV over commercial Pt/C catalyst is achieved and stably maintained for 360 hours without decay. First-principles calculations demonstrate that inner layer-confined cobalt atoms stimulate neighbouring sulfur atoms while surface-confined selenium atoms stabilize the structure, which cooperatively enable the massive generation of both in-plane and edge active sites with optimized hydrogen adsorption activity. This strategy provides a viable route for developing MoS 2 -based catalysts for industrial HER applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen has been considered a viable substitute for fossil fuels, with the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) being the most sustainable method for producing hydrogen. However, developing non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high HER activity remains a significant challenge. In the present work, electrospinning carbon nanotube was used as a substance to in-situ grow MoS 2 /CoS 2 composite material. The electrospinning carbon nanotube has a high length-diameter ratio, forming a conductive network. The MoS 2 /CoS 2 composite material was neatly ranged on the carbon nanotube surface, resulting in a higher exposed degree of the active sites. Furthermore, there is a heterostructure between MoS 2 and CoS 2 leading to a visible electron shift. A density functional theory (DFT) study indicated that MoS 2 /CoS 2 has much lower hydrogen adsorption free energy. As a result, the obtained catalyst exhibited excellent HER catalytic properties, with an overpotential of only 124 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope as low as 88.7 mV dec −1 in 1 M KOH. In addition, it also has an excellent long-term stability.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been recognized as one of the most promising catalysts to replace Pt for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis because of the elemental abundance, excellent catalytic potential, and stability. However, its HER efficiency is still below that of Pt. Recent research advances have revealed that the modification of pristine MoS2 is a very effective approach to boost its HER performance, including improving the intrinsic activity of sites, increasing the number of edges, and enhancing the electrical conductivity. In this review, we focus on the recent progress on the modification strategies of MoS2 for enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Moreover, some urgent challenges in this field are also discussed to realize the large-scale application of the modified-MoS2 catalysts in industry.
Facile one-pot supercritical synthesis of MoS2/pristine graphene nanohybrid as a highly active advanced electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:Direct decoration of transition metallic dichalcogenides such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) on pristine graphene is extremely difficult owing to its surface inertness. Under assistance of supercritical carbon dioxide, we develop a unique synthesis of a high-quality hybrid nanostructure with ultrafine MoS2 nanosheets supported on pristine graphene that exhibits excellent properties as an advanced catalyst for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). These include a Tafel slope of ~42 mV·decade−1, onset potential as low as ~58 mV and small potential of 81 mV for 10 mA·cm−2 current density, much superior than those obtained from other carbon-based counterparts such as carbon black, carbon nanotubes, and reduced graphene oxide. Both these potentials are the best available values ever achieved so far among all graphene or carbon nanotube-supported molybdenum sulfide. The exceptional HER activity is found to be closely associated with high density of exposed edge sites of ultrafine MoS2 nanosheets being firmly and uniformly anchored on inherently conductive graphene sheets as a result of high wettability between the supercritical fluid and inert carbon surfaces. The facile yet effective supercritical method can also be applicable to a wide range of electrochemically active nanospecies in the development of highly efficient graphene-based nano-catalysts for broad energy applications.

Abstract:MoS2 has emerged as a good application prospect in the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nevertheless, the catalytic activity of MoS2 is greatly restricted by its inferior electrical conductivity, inadequate exposure of active edge sites, and sluggish water dissociation dynamics. Herein, a 1D/2D heteronanostructure composed of SiC nanowires wrapped with MoS2 nanosheets was prepared via the hydrothermal synthesis of MoS2 on highly connected SiC nanowires (SiCnw). The nanocomposites exhibit an emerging tectorum-like morphology with interface connections of C-Mo bonds, which benefit the efficient interfacial transmission of electrons. Due to the synergetic catalytic effects of MoS2 nanosheets and SiC nanowires, the MoS2/SiCnw nanocomposites possess efficient catalytic performance with a low Tafel slope (55 mV/dec). SiC nanocrystals could reduce the activated water dissociation energy barrier, and the morphologies of connected nanowires could improve the active site exposure and charge transport. The nanocomposites possess favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The electrocatalytic performance of MoS2/SiCnw nanocomposites could be further improved by assembling the nanocomposites on a carbon fiber paper to enhance the electronic transmission efficiency.

Abstract:Here we report a strategy to prepare electrocatalysts for hydrogen generation based on MoS2 grown on highly conductive CoS2 decorated carbon cloth (MoS2/CoS2/CC) through a two-step method. The rational design of sandwich structure of MoS2/CoS2/CC electrode was significant for homogenously dispersing MoS2 on the carbon substrate, tuning the properties of the MoS2 and improving long-term durability. Benefiting from the sandwich structure with highly exposed edges, fast electron transport and additional active sites brought by interfacial sulfur of Mo-S-Co, the resulting MoS2/CoS2/CC electrode exhibited superior HER activity and excellent stability in acid solution including an overpotential of 118 and 159 mV at current density of 10 and 100 mA/cm(2), respectively, a Tafel slope of 37 mV per decade and excellent cycling stability in acid solution. The high catalytic performance and simplicity of the preparation method suggest applicability of the MoS2/CoS2/CC electrode for large-scale practical applications. Mos2/Cos2 with Heterostructure In-Situ Grown on the Surface of Electrospinning Carbon Nanotube for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:Hydrogen has been considered a viable substitute for fossil fuels, with the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) being the most sustainable method for producing hydrogen. However, developing non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high HER activity remains a significant challenge. In the present work, electrospinning carbon nanotube was used as a substance to in-situ grow MoS2/CoS2 composite material. The electrospinning carbon nanotube has a high length-diameter ratio, forming a conductive network. The MoS2/CoS2 composite material was neatly ranged on the carbon nanotube surface, resulting in a higher exposed degree of the active sites. Furthermore, there is a heterostructure between MoS2 and CoS2 leading to a visible electron shift. A density functional theory (DFT) study indicated that MoS2/CoS2 has much lower hydrogen adsorption free energy. As a result, the obtained catalyst exhibited excellent HER catalytic properties, with an overpotential of only 124 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope as low as 88.7 mV dec- 1 in 1 M KOH. In addition, it also has an excellent long-term stability.
