Abstract:A NiFe alloy nanoparticle/graphene oxide hybrid (NiFe/GO) was prepared for electrochemical glucose sensing. The as-prepared NiFe/GO hybrid was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that NiFe alloy nanoparticles can be successfully deposited on GO. The electrochemical glucose sensing performance of the as-prepared NiFe/GO hybrid was studied by cyclic voltammetry and amperometric measurement. Results showed that the NiFe/GO-modified glassy carbon electrode had sensitivity of 173 μA mM−1 cm−2 for glucose sensing with a linear range up to 5 mM, which is superior to that of commonly used Ni nanoparticles. Furthermore, high selectivity for glucose detection could be achieved by the NiFe/GO hybrid. All the results demonstrated that the NiFe/GO hybrid has promise for application in electrochemical glucose sensing.
Decorating NiCo alloy nanosheet arrays with Pt nanoparticles on carbon paper for highly sensitive glucose sensing

Abstract:Pt nanoparticles were deposited on NiCo alloy nanosheet arrays using carbon papers as substrates to fabricate the disposable non-enzymatic glucose sensing electrodes. The electrochemical performance of NiCo-Pt nanosheet arrays were systematically investigated. The NiCo-Pt-3 electrode displayed the best glucose sensing performance with high sensitivities of 4903.43 and 2258.21 μA·mM –1 ·cm –2 in the wide linear ranges of 1 μM–8 mM ( R 2 = 0.999) and 8 mM–20 mM ( R 2 = 0.996), respectively. The detection limit at 0.6 V was about 0.25 μM (S/N = 3). The incorporation of Pt greatly improved the electrocatalytic activity of NiCo-Pt-3 for glucose oxidation, during which Pt can not only act as the charge transfer promoter to improve the catalytic activity of NiCo alloy, but also serve as electrocatalyst for direct glucose oxidation. Moreover, NiCo-Pt-3 also demonstrated high selectivity and preferable feasibility for serum sample analysis. The study of the NiCo-Pt-3 nanosheet array may provide a promising way to construct highly efficient non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

Abstract:Cobalt oxide nanosheets (Co3O4 NSs)/polypyrrole nanowire (PPy NW) core-shell nano-heterostructures based on nickel foam (NF) were fabricated for electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose determination. The Co3O4/PPy nanostructures grew directly on nickel foam substrate by electrochemical deposition processes. The PPy NW core and the Co3O4 NS shell constructed the hierarchical nanocomposites to form a three dimensional micro-nanostructure in the micropores of NF. The as-prepared Co3O4/PPy/NF heterostructures were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The introduction of the Co3O4 NSs can provide a high surface area and lead to high sensitivity to glucose. Chronoamperometry was used to evaluate the sensitivity of the sensor toward glucose. Compared with NF, PPy/NF, and Co(OH)(2)/PPy/NF electrodes, the Co3O4/PPy/NF electrode exhibited higher electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of glucose, and the proposed glucose sensor showed linear electrochemical responses to glucose with a low detection limit of 0.74 mu M (S/N = 3). In addition, the prepared biosensor revealed good selectivity in the presence of electro-active species such as D-fructose, uric acid, ascorbic acid and hydrogen peroxide, and provided an excellent platform for the determination of glucose in human urine samples.
Facile Synthesis of Novel Ni(Ii)-Based Metal-Organic Coordination Polymer Nanoparticle/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites and Their Application for Highly Sensitive and Selective Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensing

Abstract:The present paper reports on the facile preparation of novel Ni(II)-based metal-organic coordination polymer nanoparticle/reduced graphene oxide (NiCPNP/rGO) nanocomposites for the first time. The formation of the nanocomposites occurs in a single step, carried out by hydrothermal treatment of the mixture of tannic acid functioned graphene oxide and NiCl(2) aqueous solution in N,N-dimethylformamide. It is found that the NiCPNP/rGO nanocomposite-modified electrode shows high electrocatalytic activity for glucose oxidation in alkaline medium. This nonenzymatic glucose sensor exhibits high selectivity toward glucose and the linear range and limit of detection are estimated to be from 0.01 to 8.75 mM (r: 0.997) and 0.14 μM with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, respectively. The application of this glucose sensor in human blood serum has also been demonstrated successfully.

Abstract:Ni–Co alloys with different compositions have been electroplated, followed by anodizing and annealing. Subsequently, the impact of metal composition and treatment on the morphology and glucose catalytic properties for the samples are characterized. Results indicate that the samples become loose and porous after anodization and annealing accompanied by the appearance of fluoride and oxides. The highest catalytic sensitivity (2820 μA mM −1 cm −2 ) and fast current response (<2 s) are obtained in the anodized Co sample. This pioneering work not only offers a promising strategy for the convenient construction of nanoporous alloy composites, but also broads the scope of application of Ni–Co alloys and their compounds in the field of glucose catalysis.

Abstract:A highly controllable, green, and rapid strategy is demonstrated for fabricating of highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose sensing platforms. Carbon nanohorns (CNHs) were decorated onto the screen-printed electrodes. Binary nickel-cobalt sulfide (NiCo-S) nanosheets (NSs) were then deposited on CNH-casted electrodes by a facile and scalable method. Following detailed structural characterization and the electrocatalytic activity of the fabricated NiCo-S/CNH electrodes towards electro-oxidation of glucose was examined in detail. The proposed electrodes operated within two distinct linear dynamic ranges of 0.001- 0.330 mM and 0.330 - 4.53 mM with sensitivities of 1842 mu A.mM(-1).cm(-2) and 854 mu A.mM(-1).cm(-2), respectively. Analytical sensitivity of 467 mu A.mM(-1).cm(-2), within the linear dynamic range of 0.5 similar to 6 mM, was obtained for the static chronoamperometric measurements. The proposed sensor showed outstanding selectivity against isostructures and co-existing interferences, long-term stability, fast response (1.7 s), excellent poisoning resistance against chloride ions, good repeatability, and high reproducibility. The structural and electrochemical properties of the NiCo-S/CNHs were also compared to its mono-metallic counterparts. Finally, to demonstrate the capability of the fabricated electrodes for glucose measurements in physiological specimens, the glucose level was successfully measured in human blood serum, urine, and saliva samples, without any sample pre-treatment.
MOF-Derived Porous Ni2P/Graphene Composites with Enhanced Electrochemical Properties for Sensitive Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensing

Abstract:Herein, we report a high-performance electrocatalyst by orientationally growing Ni2P nanoparticles in situ on graphene film (Ni2P/G) for nonenzymatic glucose sensors in alkaline media. The combination of highly active Ni2P and stable graphene film with rapid conductivity enables this composite to display excellent electrochemical activity toward glucose with enhanced electron transfer rate and steadiness. With Ni-MOF-74 as a precursor, Ni2P/G showed even metal distribution, massive exposure of active sites, and spatially ordered structure. Benefiting from the synergistic reaction of Ni2P particles and graphene, this metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-derived composite exhibited high electrocatalytic activity and specificity toward glucose electrooxidation. Under optimized conditions, a wide linear response was obtained from 5 μM to 1.4 mM with a detection limit of 0.44 μM. Furthermore, an excellent linear response ( R2 = 0.9897) was also obtained by a Ni2P/G modified electrode in human serum with the concentration of glucose ranging from 1 to 8 mM, indicating that the Ni2P/G platform could be utilized for glucose monitoring in practical life.

Abstract:AbstractUsing graphene oxides (GO) as carbon source and NaCl crystals as the solid dispersant, a three-dimensional carbon-based nanohybrid was prepared by anchoring carbon shells-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles onto the reduced graphene oxides nanosheets (Ni@C@rGO). The as-obtained Ni@C@rGO exhibits larger specific surface area and pore volume as well as higher reactivity toward glucose oxidation, compared with the prepared Ni@rGO by the same conditions without NaCl crystals. The higher electrochemical reactivity may be originated from the ultrathin carbon shells, high dispersion of active Ni nanoparticles, and high conductivity of the graphene substrates. To further explore its electrochemical applications, Ni@C@rGO was employed to construct a glucose sensing platform, offering a low detection limit (0.34 μM) and wide linear range (2–951 μM). It was successfully utilized to monitor the glucose level in human serums, and satisfactory results were obtained. This used preparation strategy is in favor of making more nanocomposites with superior electrochemical properties.

Abstract:The development of novel single-atom catalysts is important for highly efficient electrochemical catalysis and sensing. In this work, a novel Pt single atoms (SAs) supported on Ni6Co1 layered double hydroxides/nitrogen-doped graphene (Pt1/Ni6Co1LDHs/NG) was constructed for electrochemical enzyme-free catalysis and sensing towards glucose. The loading of Pt single atoms increases with doping of Co atoms that generate more anchoring sites for Pt SAs. The resulting Pt1/Ni6Co1LDHs/NG exhibits low oxidative potential of 0.440 V with high sensitivity of 273.78 µA·mM−1·cm−2 toward glucose, which are 85 mV lower and 15 times higher than those of Ni(OH)2, respectively. Pt1/Ni6Co1LDHs/NG also shows excellent selectivity and great stability during 5-week testing. Theoretical and experimental results show that the boosted performance of Pt1/Ni6Co1LDHs/NG originates from its stronger binding energy with glucose and the synergistic effect of Pt SAs, Co doping, and NG. This work provides a general strategy of designing highly active SACs for extending their application in electrochemical sensing.

Abstract:Hybrid transition metals/metal oxides/carbon bases with adjustable structures are becoming more and more important and attractive as electrode materials for electrocatalysis of glucose. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of carbon encapsulated hollow cage NiCo-NiCoO2 composite (NiCo-NiCoO2/C), which were synthesized by a two-step procedure involving preparation of nickel-cobalt Prussian blue analogue (Ni-Co PBA) derivative (NiO-NiCo2O4) and an organic carbon source, and the synthesis of the nanocomposite at 400°C for direct carbonization and reduction process in an Ar atmosphere. As a multi-component electrocatalyst for glucose oxidation in alkaline solution, the unique structure provides a large accessible surface area, while the uniformly distributed NiCoO2, NiCo, and C effectively catalyze and facilitate the glucose reaction. The sensitivity of the catalyst were 340.4 μA mM−1 cm−2 and 56.1 μA mM−1 cm−2 in the linear concentration ranges of 0.1 μM-600 μM and 0.9 mM-6.3 mM, respectively, and the LOD was 0.03 μM with good reproducibility and long-term stability. Besides, the effective performance of the sensor material in detecting glucose in real human serum has been recognized. The NiCo-NiCoO2/C annealed at an appropriate temperature has high electronic conductivity, large surface area, and faster ion/electron transfer at the electrode and electrolyte-electrode interface, resulting in a higher electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose ability.

Nickel Nanoparticles Modified Conducting Polymer Composite of Reduced Graphene Oxide Doped Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene) for Enhanced Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensing

Abstract:A facile two-step electrochemical strategy was reported to synthesize nanocomposite of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) doped conducting polymer poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) decorated with nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Pure graphene oxide (GO) doped PEDOT composite was firstly electropolymerized onto the GCE through cyclic voltammetry, followed by electrochemical reduction in a solution containing nickel cations at a constant potential of -0.9 V. During the electrochemical reduction process, GO doped in the PEDOT composite would be reduced to a more conductive form of RGO, and at the same time, nickel cations could be reduced to form NiNPs and loaded on the composite surface. The prepared nanocomposite (NiNPs/PEDOT/RGO) modified electrode showed outstanding electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of glucose in alkaline media, and it could be developed into a nonenzymatic glucose sensor. Under optimum conditions, the glucose sensor exhibited a linear range from 1.0 mu M to 5.1 mM and a detection limit of 0.8 mu M (S/N = 3), associated with excellent stability, high reproducibility and favorable selectivity against common interferents. Abstract:The authors report on the synthesis of carboxy functionalized graphene oxide (fGO) decorated with magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. The resulting nanomaterial was used to prepare a composite with polyaniline (PANI) which was characterized by UV-vis, Fourier transform-infrared and Raman spectroscopies. Its surface morphologies were characterized by atomic force and scanning electron microscopies. A screen-printed carbon electrode was then modified with the nanocomposite to obtain an enzyme-free glucose sensor. The large surface of fGO and Fe3O4 along with the enhanced charge transfer capability of PANI warrant a pronounced electrochemical response (typically measured at 0.18 V versus Ag/AgCl) which is suppressed in the presence of glucose. This reduction of current by glucose was used to design a sensitive method for quantification of glucose. The response of the modified SPCE is linear in the 0.05 μM - 5 mM glucose concentration range, and the lower detection limit is 0.01 μM. Abstract:A novel non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor device was fabricated for glucose detection based on nickel nanoparticles/graphene nanosheets (NiNPs/GNs) composites, which were synthesized through in situ chemical reduction procedure. The NiNPs/GNs composites modified electrode exhibited high electrocatalytic activity and good response toward the oxidation of glucose in alkaline solution, attributing to the synergistic effect of GNs and NiNPs. At detection potential of +0.5 V, the biosensor exhibited high sensitivity of 865 mu A mM(-1) cm(-2) for glucose with a wide linear range from 5 mu M to 550 mu M as well as a low detection limit of 1.85 mu M (at a signal-to-noise ratio(S/N) of 3). The good analytical performance, low cost and simple fabrication procedure make this novel electrode material promising for the development of effective non-enzymatic glucose sensor. Abstract:Nanostructured NiCu layered double hydroxides (NiCu LDHs) are synthesized in situ on polypyrrole nanotubes through convenient co‐precipitation and hydrothermal synthesis. The nanostructured composite (NiCu LDHs/PPy) shows high electrocatalytic activities towards the glucose oxidation reaction in alkaline electrolyte so that a nonenzymatic glucose sensor is developed. It is demonstrated that the sensor offers a wide linear range from 1.5 μM to 1.0 mM with a high sensitivity of 525.8 μA mM‐1 cm‐2 and a low limit of detection of 66 nM (S/N = 3). The nonenzymatic sensor has been successfully applied to real blood samples for glucose minoring with high accuracy.

Abstract:Graphene-based hybrid nanomaterials have recently been investigated and proposed as a promising platform for electronic, optoelectronic, and electrochemical devices because of their high-surface area, remarkable chemical stability, and electrical conductivity. In this study, we demonstrated a facile method for the preparation of graphene/Ni(OH)2 hybrid nanomaterials. First, polymer-functionalized graphene oxide (PGO) was prepared by Cu(I)-catalyzed click coupling of alkyne-functionalized graphene oxide with azide-terminated poly(vinylpyrrolidone). Subsequently, Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles were deposited onto graphene nanosheets using PGO as a template. Upon reduction with NaBH4, graphene/Ni(OH)2 hybrid nanostructures were constructed. The as-prepared graphene/Ni(OH)2 hybrid nanosheets were directly immobilized onto the surface of glassy carbon electrode for glucose determination. The as-fabricated nonenzymatic glucose sensor exhibited a wider linearity range from 0.3 to 750 μM with a detection limit of 30 nM (S/N = 3).

Abstract:Ultrathin and vertical NiCo2O4 nanosheets were grown on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (NiCo2O4 NSs@N-rGO) through a simple one-step co-precipitation procedure. The NiCo2O4 NSs@N-rGO nanocomposites were investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. And the performance of NiCo(2)O(4)NSs@N-rGO non-enzymatic glucose sensor was measured by cyclic voltammetry and amperometric method. The sensor exhibited two wide linear ranges of 0.01 mM-5.50 mM and 5.50 mM-15.50 mM with high sensitivity of 4372.9 mu A center dot mM(-1)cm(-2) and 1686.1 mu A center dot mM(-1)cm(-2), which is much better than other Co-based and Ni-based glucose sensors. In addition, the non-enzymatic glucose sensor also shows strong anti-interference and durability. Besides, it is found that this non-enzymatic glucose sensor can accurately measure the blood glucose concentration in human serum, which provides a great possibility for future application in medical treatment.

Abstract:A green and simple strategy to prepare graphene foam-like three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon/Ni nanoparticles (NiNPs) nanocomposites was developed for glucose detection. The discarded sponge-like natural product, pomelo peel, was employed as novel supporting materials to load a large number of Ni2+ by a simple immersing method to form pomelo peel/Ni2+ which was then carbonized to construct the graphene foam-like 3D porous carbon/NiNPs nanocomposites. The resulted nanocomposites were carefully characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectra and electrochemical techniques. The results showed that the NiNPs was acted as the catalyst to result in the transformation of sponge-like pomelo peel into graphene foam-like 3D porous carbon/NiNPs nanocomposites during the carbonization process. The unique catalytic activity, good electrical conductivity as well as the novel structure of the nanocomposites contributed to a perfect electrochemical performance towards the oxidization of glucose, superior to other nanomaterials. The 3D porous carbon/NiNPs nanocomposites were used to construct glucose electrochemical sensor which exhibited a wide linear range (15.84 mu M-6.48 mM) and a low detection limit (4.8 mu M). This study might provide a novel proposal for preparing perfect electrochemical sensor based on porous carbon materials in the electrochemical sensing. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A nonenzymatic electrochemical biosensor was developed for the detection of glucose based on an electrode modified with palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs)-functioned graphene (nafion–graphene). The palladium nanoparticle–graphene nanohybrids were synthesized using an in situ reduction process. Nafion–graphene was first assembled onto an electrode to chemically adsorb Pd2+. And Pd2+ was subsequently reduced by hydrazine hydrate to form PdNPs in situ. Such a PdNPs–graphene nanohybrids-based electrode shows a very high electrochemical activity for electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose in alkaline medium. The proposed biosensor can be applied to the quantification of glucose with a wide linear range covering from 10μM to 5mM (R=0.998) with a low detection limit of 1μM. The experiment results also showed that the sensor exhibits good reproducibility and long-term stability, as well as high selectivity with no interference from other potential competing species.
High-Performance Non-enzymatic Glucose Sensors Based on CoNiCu Alloy Nanotubes Arrays Prepared by Electrodeposition

Abstract:Transition metal alloys are good candidate electrodes for non-enzymatic glucose sensors due to their low cost and high performance. In this work, we reported the controllable electrodeposition of CoNiCu alloy nanotubes electrodes using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) as template. Uniform CoNiCu alloy arrays of nanotubes about 2 μm in length and 280 nm in diameter were obtained by optimizing the electrodeposition parameters. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) measurements indicated that the as-prepared alloy nanotubes arrays are composed of 64.7 wt% Co-19.4 wt% Ni-15.9 wt% Cu. Non-enzymatic glucose sensing measurements indicated that the CoNiCu nanotubes arrays possessed a low detection limit of 0.5 μM, a high sensitivity of 791 μA mM −1 cm −2 from 50 to 1,551 μM and 322 μA mM −1 cm −2 from 1,551 to 4,050 μM. Besides, they showed high reliability with the capacity of anti-jamming. Tafel plots showed that alloying brought higher exchange current density and faster reaction speed. The high performance should be due to the synergistic effect of Co, Ni, and Cu metal elements and high surface area of nanotubes arrays.
