Abstract:Molecular electronics is driven by the dream of expanding Moore's law to the molecular level for next‐generation electronics through incorporating individual or ensemble molecules into electronic circuits. For nearly 50 years, numerous efforts have been made to explore the intrinsic properties of molecules and develop diverse fascinating molecular electronic devices with desired functionalities. The flourishing of molecular electronics is inseparable from the development of various elegant methodologies for creating nanogap electrodes and bridging the nanogap with molecules. This review first focuses on the techniques for making lateral and vertical nanogap electrodes by breaking, narrowing and fixed modes, and highlights their capabilities, applications, merits, and shortcomings. After summarizing the approaches of growing single molecules or molecular layers on the electrodes, we comprehensively group the methods of constructing a complete molecular circuit into three categories: (1) directly bridging one molecule‐electrode component with another electrode, (2) physically bridging two molecule‐electrode components, and (3) chemically bridging two molecule‐electrode components. Finally, we discuss the current state of molecular circuit integration and commercialization and provide our perspectives, hoping to encourage the community to accelerate the realization of fully scalable molecular electronics for a new era of integrated microsystems and applications. Abstract:The field of molecular electronics, also known as moletronics, deals with the assembly of molecular electronic components using molecules as the building blocks. It is an interdisciplinary field that includes physics, chemistry, materials science, and engineering. Moletronics mainly deals with the reduction of size of silicon components. Novel research has been performed in developing electrical-equivalent molecular components. Moletronics has established its influence in electronic and photonic applications, such as conducting polymers, photochromics, organic superconductors, electrochromics, and many more. Since there is a need to reduce the size of the silicon chip, attaining such technology at the molecular level is essential. Although the experimental verification and modeling of molecular devices present a daunting task, vital breakthroughs have been achieved in this field. This article combines an overview of various molecular components, such as molecular transistors, diodes, capacitors, wires, and insulators, with a discussion of the potential applications of different molecules suitable for such components. We emphasize future developments and provide a brief review of different achievements that have been made regarding graphene-based molecular devices.

Abstract:Creating functional electrical circuits using individual or ensemble molecules, often termed as "molecular-scale electronics", not only meets the increasing technical demands of the miniaturization of traditional Si-based electronic devices, but also provides an ideal window of exploring the intrinsic properties of materials at the molecular level. This Review covers the major advances with the most general applicability and emphasizes new insights into the development of efficient platform methodologies for building reliable molecular electronic devices with desired functionalities through the combination of programmed bottom-up self-assembly and sophisticated top-down device fabrication. First, we summarize a number of different approaches of forming molecular-scale junctions and discuss various experimental techniques for examining these nanoscale circuits in details. We then give a full introduction of characterization techniques and theoretical simulations for molecular electronics. Third, we highlight the major contributions and new concepts of integrating molecular functionalities into electrical circuits. Finally, we provide a critical discussion of limitations and main challenges that still exist for the development of molecular electronics. These analyses should be valuable for deeply understanding charge transport through molecular junctions, the device fabrication process, and the roadmap for future practical molecular electronics.

Abstract:Even if Moore's Law continues to hold, it will take about 250 years to fill the performance gap between present-day computer and the ultimate computer determined from the laws of physics alone. Information processing technology in the post-CMOS era will likely consist of a heterogeneous set of novel device technologies that span a broad range of materials, operational principles, data representations, logic systems and architectures. Molecular nanostructures promise to occupy a prominent role in any attempt to extend charge-based device technology beyond the projected limits of CMOS scaling. We discuss the potentials and challenges of molecular electronics and identify the fundamental knowledge gap that needs to be addressed for a successful introduction of molecule-enabled computing technology

Abstract:Integrated electronics and optoelectronics based on organic semiconductors have attracted considerable interest in displays, photovoltaics, and biosensing owing to their designable electronic properties, solution processability, and flexibility. Miniaturization and integration of devices are growing trends in molecular electronics and optoelectronics for practical applications, which requires large-scale and versatile assembly strategies for patterning organic micro/nano-structures with simultaneously long-range order, pure orientation, and high resolution. Although various integration methods have been developed in past decades, molecular electronics still needs a versatile platform to avoid defects and disorders due to weak intermolecular interactions in organic materials. In this perspective, a roadmap of organic integration technologies in recent three decades is provided to review the history of molecular electronics. First, we highlight the importance of long-range-ordered molecular packing for achieving exotic electronic and photophysical properties. Second, we classify the strategies for large-scale integration of molecular electronics through the control of nucleation and crystallographic orientation, and evaluate them based on factors of resolution, crystallinity, orientation, scalability, and versatility. Third, we discuss the multifunctional devices and integrated circuits based on organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and photodetectors. Finally, we explore future research directions and outlines the need for further development of molecular electronics, including assembly of doped organic semiconductors and heterostructures, biological interfaces in molecular electronics and integrated organic logics based on complementary FETs.

Abstract:Magnonics is a research field that has gained an increasing interest in both the fundamental and applied sciences in recent years. This field aims to explore and functionalize collective spin excitations in magnetically ordered materials for modern information technologies, sensing applications, and advanced computational schemes. Spin waves, also known as magnons, carry spin angular momenta that allow for the transmission, storage, and processing of information without moving charges. In integrated circuits, magnons enable on-chip data processing at ultrahigh frequencies without the Joule heating, which currently limits clock frequencies in conventional data processors to a few GHz. Recent developments in the field indicate that functional magnonic building blocks for in-memory computation, neural networks, and Ising machines are within reach. At the same time, the miniaturization of magnonic circuits advances continuously as the synergy of materials science, electrical engineering, and nanotechnology allows for novel on-chip excitation and detection schemes. Such circuits can already enable magnon wavelengths of 50 nm at microwave frequencies in a 5G frequency band. Research into non-charge-based technologies is urgently needed in view of the rapid growth of machine learning and artificial intelligence applications, which consume substantial energy when implemented on conventional data processing units. In its first part, the 2024 Magnonics Roadmap provides an update on the recent developments and achievements in the field of nano-magnonics while defining its future avenues and challenges. In its second part, the Roadmap addresses the rapidly growing research endeavors on hybrid structures and magnonics-enabled quantum engineering. We anticipate that these directions will continue to attract researchers to the field and, in addition to showcasing intriguing science, will enable unprecedented functionalities that enhance the efficiency of alternative information technologies and computational schemes.

Abstract:Conspectus: An ideal methodology for miniaturizing the physical size, enhancing the operational frequency, and building the multifunctional capability of functional chips is to use opto- or electroactive single molecules as their central elements; such devices are generally termed single-molecule electronics and optoelectronics. The exploration of the electronic and optoelectronic properties of materials at the single-molecule level also allows the complete elucidation of the correlation between molecular structure and function, which in turn aids technological advances that can help to address the challenge raised by Moore's Law. In this Account, we present our ongoing investigative pursuits in the realm of single-molecule electronics and optoelectronics, with a particular emphasis on studies using graphene-molecule-graphene single-molecule junctions as the primary framework. To date, we have established a diverse range of single-molecule multifunctional devices, including photoswitches, field-effect transistors, rectifiers, light-emitting diodes, spin electronic devices, memristors, and molecular wires. These types of devices possess stable graphene electrodes and robust covalent molecule-electrode interfaces. The main focuses of this account are our proposed molecular/interface engineering strategy including interface design using particular linkers, spacers, insulation, and functional centers and our device engineering strategy that covers the design of the device structure and electrode materials. These strategies adequately consider the coupling between functional centers and their external environment, thus affording the ability to evaluate and manipulate the intrinsic behaviors of target molecules. Specifically, a covalent molecule-electrode interface enables high device stability at a high bias voltage. Three nonconjugated methylene groups are inserted at the electrode-molecule interface to prevent the quenching of the excited state of the central molecule (e.g., diarylethene) by the graphene electrode, thereby achieving robust and reversible photoswitches. Cyclodextrins are introduced as insulating groups around molecular bridges to weaken the coupling of the bridges with the environment, which increases the quantum yield of light-emitting diodes. Additional reactive sites are introduced on the sides of the molecular bridges, providing the ability to add new functional centers. We show that using materials with a high dielectric constant as the dielectric layer enables efficient electrical manipulations of single-molecule electronics and optoelectronics by the gate voltage. We reveal that the use of ferromagnetic metal electrodes in single-molecule electronics and optoelectronics can meet the requirements for spin injection. In particular, the two-dimensional structure of graphene electrodes that can be tailored by etching enables high-density integration of molecules, paving the way for future logical manipulation and real-time communication. These systematic investigations emphasize the importance of single-molecule electronics and optoelectronics for miniaturized device fabrication, intrinsic mechanism exploration, and advanced chip applications. Further interdisciplinary cooperative efforts, including micro- and nanoprocessing, organic synthesis, and theoretical calculation, will contribute to the rapid development of single-molecule electronics and optoelectronics that are suitable for practical applications.

Abstract:Further rapid progress of electronics, in particular the increase of computer power and breakthroughs in sensor technology for industrial, medical diagnostics and environmental applications, strongly depends on the scaling of electronic devices, ultimately to the size of molecules. Design of controllable molecular-scale devices may resolve the problem of energy dissipation at the nanoscale and take advantage of molecular self-assembly in the so-called bottom-up approach. This special issue of Nanotechnology is devoted to a better understanding of the function and design of molecular-scale devices that are relevant to future electronics and sensor technology. Papers contained in this special issue are selected from the symposium Nano and Giga Challenges in Electronics and Photonics: From Atoms to Materials to Devices to System Architecture (12-16 March, 2007, Phoenix, Arizona, USA), as well as from original and novel scientific contributions of invited world-renown researchers. It addresses both theoretical and experimental achievements in the fields of molecular and bioelectronics, chemical and biosensors at the molecular level, including carbon nanotubes, novel nanostructures, as well as related research areas and industrial applications. The conference series Nano and Giga Challenges in Electronics and Photonics was launched as a truly interdisciplinary forum to bridge scientists and engineers to work across boundaries in the design of future information technologies, from atoms to materials to devices to system architecture. Following the first two successful meetings in Moscow, Russia (NGCM2002) and Krakow, Poland (NGCM2004), the third Nano and Giga Forum (NGC2007) was held in 2007 hosted by Arizona State University. Besides this special issue of Nanotechnology, two other collections (in the journal Solid State Electronics and the tutorial book in the series Nanostructure Science and Technology Springer) have published additional selected and invited papers from NGC2007. The NGC2007 meeting, which included two days of tutorials (Spring School) and a three day symposium, attracted approximately 400 participants from academic, industrial and governmental research institutions from 41 countries, and covered recent developments in the fabrication and functionality of nano-scale materials, devices and system architecture from advanced CMOS to molecular electronics, photonics, optoelectronics and magnetic materials and devices. Molecular electronics based on self-assembled monolayers

Abstract:Since the first measurement of electron tunneling through an organic monolayer in 1971,(Mann and Kuhn, 1971) and the gedanken experiment of a molecular current rectifying diode in 1974,(Aviram and Ratner, 1974) molecular-scale electronics have attracted a growing interest, both for basic science at the nanoscale and for possible applications in nano-electronics. In the first case, molecules are quantum object by nature and their properties can be tailored by chemistry opening avenues for new experiments. In the second case, molecule-based devices are envisioned to complement silicon devices by providing new functions or already existing functions at a simpler process level and at a lower cost by virtue of their self-organization capabilities, moreover, they are not bound to von Neuman architecture and this may open the way to other architectural paradigms. After a brief overview of the nanofabrication of molecular devices, we review in this chapter, the electronic properties of several basic devices, from simple molecules such as molecular tunnel junctions and molecular wires, to more complex ones such as molecular rectifying diodes, molecular switches and memories.

Abstract:Molecular electronics is a promising route for down-sizing electronic devices. Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy provides us a setup to probe current-driven molecular junctions that are considered as prototypes of molecular electronic devices. In this setup, the plasmonic tip concentrates optical fields to a degree that allows observing optical response of single molecules. Simultaneously, the tip can also induce a localized optical angular momentum, which has been seldomly considered in previous studies. Here, we propose that the induced optical angular momentum can interact with the probed molecule and strongly modify the response signal. Specifically, we demonstrate the ability to control the vibrational resonance of current-driven molecular junctions with the optical angular momentum. This precise control of light–matter interactions at the nanoscale allows us to demonstrate multiple logic operations. Abstract:The manufacture of integrated circuits with single-molecule building blocks is a goal of molecular electronics. While research in the past has been limited to bulk experiments on self-assembled monolayers, advances in technology have now enabled us to fabricate single-molecule junctions. This has led to significant progress in understanding electron transport in molecular systems at the single-molecule level and the concomitant emergence of new device concepts. Here, we review recent developments in this field. We summarize the methods currently used to form metal-molecule-metal structures and some single-molecule techniques essential for characterizing molecular junctions such as inelastic electron tunnelling spectroscopy. We then highlight several important achievements, including demonstration of single-molecule diodes, transistors, and switches that make use of electrical, photo, and mechanical stimulation to control the electron transport. We also discuss intriguing issues to be addressed further in the future such as heat and thermoelectric transport in an individual molecule.

Abstract:Beyond being the repository of genetic information, DNA is playing an increasingly important role as a building block for molecular electronics. Its inherent structural and molecular recognition properties render it a leading candidate for molecular electronics applications. The structural stability, diversity and programmability of DNA provide overwhelming freedom for the design and fabrication of molecular-scale devices. In the past two decades DNA has therefore attracted inordinate amounts of attention in molecular electronics. This review gives a brief survey of recent experimental progress in DNA-based single-molecule electronics with special focus on single-molecule conductance and <i>I-V</i> characteristics of individual DNA molecules. Existing challenges and exciting future opportunities are also discussed.

Abstract:We are at an inflection point in computing where traditional technologies are incapable of keeping up with the demands of exploding data collection and artificial intelligence. This challenge demands a leap to a new platform as transformative as the digital silicon revolution. Over the past 30 years molecular materials for computing have generated great excitement but continually fallen short of performance and reliability requirements. However, recent reports indicate that those historical limitations may have been resolved. Here we assess the current state of computing with molecular-based materials, especially using transition metal complexes of redox active ligands, in the context of neuromorphic computing. We describe two complementary research paths necessary to determine whether molecular materials can be the basis of a new computing technology: continued exploration of the molecular electronic properties that enable computation and, equally important, the process development for on-chip integration of molecular materials.

Abstract:Magnonics is a budding research field in nanomagnetism and nanoscience that addresses the use of spin waves (magnons) to transmit, store, and process information. The rapid advancements of this field during last one decade in terms of upsurge in research papers, review articles, citations, proposals of devices as well as introduction of new sub-topics prompted us to present the first roadmap on magnonics. This is a collection of 22 sections written by leading experts in this field who review and discuss the current status besides presenting their vision of future perspectives. Today, the principal challenges in applied magnonics are the excitation of sub-100 nm wavelength magnons, their manipulation on the nanoscale and the creation of sub-micrometre devices using low-Gilbert damping magnetic materials and its interconnections to standard electronics. To this end, magnonics offers lower energy consumption, easier integrability and compatibility with CMOS structure, reprogrammability, shorter wavelength, smaller device features, anisotropic properties, negative group velocity, non-reciprocity and efficient tunability by various external stimuli to name a few. Hence, despite being a young research field, magnonics has come a long way since its early inception. This roadmap asserts a milestone for future emerging research directions in magnonics, and hopefully, it will inspire a series of exciting new articles on the same topic in the coming years.

Abstract:Abstract The developments of advanced manufacturing have promoted the miniaturization of semiconductor electronic devices into a near-atomic scale, which continuously follows the “top-down” construction method. However, huge challenges have be encountered with the exponentially increased cost and inevitably prominent quantum effects. Molecular electronics is a highly-interdisciplinary subject that studies the quantum behavior of electrons tunneling in molecules. It aims to assemble electronic devices in a "bottom-up" manner on this scale through a single molecule, thereby shedding lights on the future design of logic circuits with new operating principles. The core technologies in this field are based on the rapid development of the precise fabrication at molecular scale, regulation at quantum scale and related applications of the basic electronic component of "electrode-molecule-electrode junction". Therefore, the quantum charge transport properties of the molecule can be controlled to pave the way for the bottom-up construction of single-molecule devices. The review firstly focuses on the collection and classification of construction methods of molecular junctions. Thereafter, various characterization and regulation methods for molecular junctions are discussed, then the properties based on tunneling theory at quantum scale from the corresponding molecular electronic devices have been introduced. Finally, a summary and perspective are given to discuss further challenges and opportunities for future design of electronic devices.

Abstract:Benefiting from the development of molecular electronics and molecular plasmonics, the interplay of light and electronic transport in molecular junctions has attracted growing interest among researchers in both fields, leading to a new research direction of "single-molecule optoelectronics". Here, we review the latest developments of photo-modulated charge transport,electroluminescence and Raman spectroscopy from single-molecule junctions, and suggest future directions for single-molecule optoelectronics.

Abstract:Energy dissipation through physical downscaling towards more complex types of memory and logic devices, loss of ultrapure water and consumption of large amounts of (toxic) chemicals for wafer cleaning processes, as well as high thermal budget of solid-state synthesis and thin film growth of standard semiconductors including the use of rare earth elements – all this poses great challenges for semiconductor materials science and technology. Therefore, research and development of alternative methods for micro- and nanofabrication and chemical functionalization of a new type of resource- and energy-efficient semiconductors as the core component of every computer chip is crucial. One of the promising opportunities is the transformation of today's complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) electronics into ecofriendly and neuroinspired electronics driven by molecular design and multi-level switching mechanisms at room temperature. The sustainable chemical technology of electron transport and switching materials in semiconductor manufacturing and the development of devices with new unconventional nanophysics, improved performance, and augmented functionalities (beyond-CMOS and More-than-Moore) is becoming increasingly important in the context of a gradual transition to a future-oriented concept of Internet of Everything (IoE). In this article, we focus on the technological significance of semiconductor preparation from single-source (molecular) precursors and the prospect of functionalizing semiconductors using DNA origami nanotechnology and stimuli-responsive metal–oxygen cluster ions such as polyoxometalates (POMs). We also describe the advanced characterization of these qualified molecular systems by soft X-rays. We emphasize the technical relevance of using solution-based methods for the bottom-up preparation of novel and hybrid semiconductors as well as their challenging scalability and the compatibility of methods of molecular technology with lithography-based mass production. Our article aims to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).
