Abstract:Understanding the single-molecule switching mechanism in densely packed, rationally designed, and highly organized nanostructures is crucial for practical applications such as high-density data storage devices. In this article, we report an in situ low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) investigation of reversible switching of a single-dipole molecule (chloroaluminium phthalocyanine, ClAlPc) imbedded in two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen-bonded binary molecular networks on graphite. The single-molecule switching is highly localized and reversible and leaves the neighboring molecular network unaffected. The switching direction can be controlled by the polarity of the voltage pulse applied to the STM tip. On the basis of experimental results and theoretical calculations, the reversible switching is proposed to be caused by the "shuttling" of the CI atom between two sides of the ClAlPc molecular plane.

Abstract:Controlling structural transitions between molecular configurations is crucial for advancing functional molecular electronics. While reversible switching of bistable two-state molecules has been achieved, creating molecular systems that can be controllably switched between multiple configurations often requires complex synthetic methods, presenting a much greater challenge. In this study, we showcase a straightforward yet effective strategy to create and control transitions between multiple molecular structural states by forming a surface-bound molecular dimer. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we induce and characterize the structural transitions of a pyrrolidine dimer on a Cu(100) surface. The intermolecular interactions open new energy transfer channels, enabling the excitation through pathways that were inaccessible in monomers. The occupation of different molecular states is highly sensitive to both the energy of the tunneling electrons and the interaction with the STM tip. By precisely adjusting the tip-molecule distance, we can select the most probable structural configuration based on sample bias, thereby achieving on-demand control of this molecular dimer switch. This work highlights an approach that leverages both intermolecular and molecule-environment interactions to create and control an artificially fabricated molecular device.

Abstract:Electronic switches with nanoscale dimensions satisfy an urgent demand for further device miniaturization. A recent heavily investigated approach for nanoswitches is the use of molecular junctions that employ photochromic molecules that toggle between two distinct isoforms. In contrast to the reports on this approach, we demonstrate that the conductance switch behavior can be realized with only a bare metallic contact without any molecules under light illumination. We demonstrate that the conductance of bare metallic quantum contacts can be reversibly switched over eight orders of magnitude, which substantially exceeds the performance of molecular switches. After the switch process, the gap size between two electrodes can be precisely adjusted with subangstrom accuracy by controlling the light intensity or polarization. Supported by simulations, we reveal a more general and straightforward mechanism for nanoswitching behavior, i.e., atomic switches can be realized by the expansion of nanoelectrodes due to plasmonic heating.

Abstract:Here we compare the change in conductance when molecules wired between the ends of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes are switched between different states of conjugation. Our experimental approach utilizes electrodes made by excising a nanoscale section from an individual single-walled carbon nanotube. We use amide bond formation to incorporate photoswitches, diarylethenes, into these electrodes. The thiophene-based molecular bridge when incorporated into these SWNT can be switched from the open form to the closed form but not back again. If we use the pyrrole-based photoswitch, we can cycle between the open and closed states.

Abstract:Azophenine has previously been identified as a controllable molecular switch when deposited on a Cu(110) surface, where it can be in two symmetry-equivalent states. Each of the two states can be set as well as read by means of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). We propose a family of molecules based on the same quinone core, which show similar switching behavior without a supporting metal surface. Such a molecule could be an element in a molecular circuit or computer. Using the example of a simple hypothetical molecule, we show that it is possible to create molecules that show the necessary properties: two conformations with similar energy but different electric conductivity, and the possibility to switch between those by applying an external electric field.

Abstract:Making electronic devices using a single molecule has been the ultimate goal of molecular electronics. For binary data storage in particular, the challenge has been the ability to switch a single molecule in between bistable states in a simple and repeatable manner. The reversible switching of single molecules of chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (ClAlPc) dipolar molecules within a close-packed monolayer is demonstrated. Abstract:Voltage-controlled conductance hysteresis and stepwise switching in a reversible manner were observed in a single-molecule double-barrier junction defined by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at similar to 10 K. In situ visualization and characterization of the junction using the STM revealed that the charge bistability of a single molecule on a polar alumina film is responsible for the conductance hysteresis and switching. It was also found that the relative stability between different charge states depends on the multiple adsorption configurations of molecules on the surface.

Abstract:The concept of using single molecules as key building blocks for logic gates, diodes and transistors to perform basic functions of digital electronic devices at the molecular scale has been explored over the past decades. However, in addition to mimicking the basic functions of current silicon devices, molecules often possess unique properties that have no parallel in conventional materials and promise new hybrid devices with novel functions that cannot be achieved with equivalent solid-state devices. The most appealing example is the molecular switch. Over the past decade, molecular switches on surfaces have been intensely investigated. A variety of external stimuli such as light, electric field, temperature, tunneling electrons and even chemical stimulus have been used to activate these molecular switches between bistable or even multiple states by manipulating molecular conformations, dipole orientations, spin states, charge states and even chemical bond formation. The switching event can occur either on surfaces or in break junctions. The aim of this review is to highlight recent advances in molecular switches triggered by various external stimuli, as investigated by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) and the break junction technique. We begin by presenting the molecular switches triggered by various external stimuli that do not provide single molecule selectivity, referred to as non-selective switching. Special focus is then given to selective single molecule switching realized using the LT-STM tip on surfaces. Single molecule switches operated by different mechanisms are reviewed and discussed. Finally, molecular switches embedded in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and single molecule junctions are addressed.

Abstract:Small molecules that are capable of toggling between multiple and definite conformational states under external stimuli have great potential for use in molecular switches or sensors. However, currently developed regulation approaches for these switchable molecules mostly involve covalent bond-breaking/reforming processes, thereby inevitably producing byproducts or causing fatigue accumulation. Herein, we report a simple but successful model whose molecular conformation can be precisely manipulated between stretched and folded forms by employing host-guest interactions with rigid macrocycles, thus avoiding possible side reactions and fatigue accumulation and possessing excellent reversibility. Moreover, the conformation states of this molecule can be visualized and identified by luminous readout, endowing it with real-time self-reporting features. Furthermore, this controllable and reversible conformational conversion is accompanied by various valuable functions, including controllable multicolor emission; ratiometric fluorescent thermosensing with high temperature resolution, excellent reversibility, lock/unlock switching, and especially linear detection range tunability; and in addition real-time intracellular temperature sensing and imaging, disclosing the intriguing microscopic "conformation-function" relationship based on a single molecule.

Abstract:In the last decade, hydrogen (H-)tautomerization, that is, a reaction that involves simple intramolecular proton transfer, has been studied in single phthalocyanine, porphyrin, and porphycene derivatives as a prototypical single molecular conductance switch. Here, by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations, we report a binary H-tautomerism and stereoisomeric conformational switch in (amino-functionalized) porphyrins assembled in molecular chains on a gold surface. We show that the formation of the chain is crucial for the binary tautomeric switch mechanism as the single molecule switches differently. Abstract:We investigate the orientation switching of individual azobenzene molecules adsorbed on a Au(111) surface using a laser-assisted scanning tunneling microscope (STM). It is found that the rotational motion of the molecule can be regulated by both sample bias and laser wavelength. By measuring the switching rate and state occupation as a function of both bias voltage and photon energy, the threshold in sample bias and the minimal photon energy are derived. It has been revealed that the tip-induced local electrostatic potential remarkably contributes to the reduction in hopping barrier. Abstract:Precisely controlling well-defined, stable single-molecule junctions represents a pillar of single-molecule electronics. Early attempts to establish computing with molecular switching arrays were partly challenged by limitations in the direct chemical characterization of metal molecule metal junctions. While cryogenic scanning probe studies have advanced the mechanistic understanding of current- and voltage-induced conformational switching, metal molecule metal conformations are still largely inferred from indirect evidence. Hence, the development of robust, chemically sensitive techniques is instrumental for advancement in the field. Here we probe the conformation of a two-state molecular switch with vibrational spectroscopy, while simultaneously operating it by means of the applied voltage. Our study emphasizes measurements of single-molecule Raman spectra in a room-temperature stable single-molecule switch presenting a signal modulation of nearly 2 orders of magnitude.

Abstract:AbstractIntroducing magnetic switchability into artificial molecular machines is fascinating for precise control of magnetism via external stimuli. Herein, a field‐induced CoII single‐molecule magnet was found to exhibit the reversible switch of Jahn–Teller distortion near room temperature, along with thermal conformational motion of the 18‐crown‐6 rotor, which pulls the coordinated H2O to rotate through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and triggers a single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal phase transition with Twarm=282 K and Tcool=276 K. Interestingly, the molecular magnetic anisotropy probed by single‐crystal angular‐resolved magnetometry revealed the reorientation of easy axis by 14.6°. Moreover, ON/OFF negative magnetodielectric effects were respectively observed in the high‐/low‐temperature phase, which manifests the spin‐lattice interaction in the high‐temperature phase could be stronger, in accompanied by the hydrogen bonding between the rotating 18‐crown‐6 and the coordinated H2O.

Abstract:This study explores how to populate the surface of the carbon nanotubes with functional molecules that can be toggled back-and-forth between different molecular conformations. The molecules synthesized for this study are tagged with a photoswitchable headgroup and a functional group which directs the assembly on the surface of the carbon nanotubes. Single-walled carbon nanotube field effect transistors switch between high and low conductance as the molecules are switched with light between open and closed conformations. These devices detect the photoswitching of approximately 104 molecules.

Abstract:We have observed reversible light-induced mechanical switching for a single organic molecule bound to a metal surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used to image the features of an individual azobenzene molecule on Au(111) before and after reversibly cycling its mechanical structure between trans and cis states using light. Azobenzene molecules were engineered to increase their surface photomechanical activity by attaching varying numbers of tert-butyl (TB) ligands ("legs") to the azobenzene phenyl rings. STM images show that increasing the number of TB legs "lifts" the azobenzene molecules from the substrate, thereby increasing molecular photomechanical activity by decreasing molecule-surface coupling.

Abstract:This review highlights the key developments in the fabrication and application of molecular/atomic switching devices, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of the working principles and elucidate the factors that influence their performance. A critical discussion of the main challenges for realizing and developing practical molecular/atomic switches is provided as well. Electronic switches have been considered to be one of the most important components of contemporary electronic circuits for processing and storing digital information. Fabricating functional devices with building blocks of atomic/molecular switches can greatly promote the minimization of the devices and meet the requirement of high integration. This review highlights key developments in the fabrication and application of molecular switching devices. This overview offers valuable insights into the switching mechanisms under various stimuli, emphasizing structural and energy state changes in the core molecules. Beyond the molecular switches, typical individual metal atomic switches are further introduced. A critical discussion of the main challenges for realizing and developing practical molecular/atomic switches is provided. These analyses and summaries will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the switch mechanisms, providing guidance for the rational design of functional nanoswitch devices toward practical applications.

Mechanically Induced Switching between Two Discrete Conductance States: A Potential Single-Molecule Variable Resistor

Abstract:The fabrication of solid-state single-molecule switches with high on-off conductance ratios has been proposed to advance conventional technology in areas such as molecular electronics. Herein, we employed the scanning tunneling microscope break junction (STM-BJ) technique to modulate conductance in single-molecule junctions using mechanically induced stretching. Compound 1a possesses two dihydrobenzothiophene (DHBT) anchoring groups at the opposite ends linked with rigid alkyne side arms to form a gold-molecule-gold junction, while 1b contains 4-pyridine-anchoring groups. The incorporation of ferrocene into the backbone of each compound allows rotational freedom to the cyclopentadienyl (Cp) rings to give two distinct conductance states (high and low) for each. Various control experiments and suspended junction compression/retraction measurements indicate that these high- and low-conductance plateaus are the results of conformational changes within the junctions (extended and folded states) brought about by mechanically induced stretching. A high-low switching factor of 42 was achieved for 1a, whereas an exceptional conductance ratio in excess of 2 orders of magnitude (205) was observed for 1b. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest experimental on-off conductance switching ratio for a single-molecule junction exploiting the mechanically induced STM-BJ method. Computational studies indicated that the two disparate conductance states observed for 1a and 1b result from mechanically induced conformational changes due to an interplay between conductance and the dihedral angles associated with the electrode-molecule interfaces. Our study reveals the structure-function relationship that determines conductance in such flexible and dynamic systems and promotes the development of a single-molecule variable resistor with high on-off switching factors.
