Abstract:Three 1,3,5-triphenyl-2-pyrazoline-based sulfonium salt photoinitiators (PIs) were synthesized, and the relationship between their molecular structures and photophysical and photochemical properties under one/two-photon irradiation were presented. The sulfonium salts had absorption peaks from 343 nm to 372 nm that overlapped the emission of 365-425 nm light-emitting diode (LED) light sources. The energy levels of molecular orbitals were closely related to the quantum yield of photoacid generation (Phi(+)(H)) as determined by the electro-chemical and absorption properties of the PIs, and the introduction of an electron-pushing group could increase Phi(+)(H) due to the enlarged energy gap between the singlet excited states S-1 and S-2. Interestingly, the wavelength dependence of Phi(+)(H) was due to the nature of the transition. The pi-pi* transition showed high Phi(+)(H) values (0.56-0.66) under excitation by UV LEDs, while the pi-sigma* transition showed low efficiency under visible LED irradiation. Intramolecular charge transfer from the pyrazoline ring to sulfonium salts induced efficient photolysis and high Phi(+)(H). The sulfonium salts could efficiently initiate cationic polymerization and free radical polymerization. In addition, their high two-photon absorption cross-sections (delta(780 nm) = 75-105 GM) reduced the threshold of two-photon microfabrication. These PIs should have potential in LED photocuring and two-photon 3D microfabrication.
Crystallization-Induced Emission Enhancement of A Simple Tolane-Based Mesogenic Luminogen

Abstract:The photophysical properties of a diphenylacetylene derivative (FOEB) were investigated. The fluorescence quantum efficiency (Phi(F), %) of FOEB changes from moderate (49%) to low (9%) and to evidently enhanced (60%) in dilute solution, amorphous solid, and crystal state, respectively. This is a typical phenomenon of crystallization-induced emission enhancement (CIEE). The diphenylacetylene luminogen can be viewed as a propeller-like molecule with two blades (phenyl groups). In solution, the intramolecular rotations of the two blades around the ethynyl unit are activated and partially dissipate the energy in the photoexcited state, thereby leading to emission quenching. Consequently, FOEB exhibits moderate Phi(F) in solution. In amorphous solid, the intramolecular rotations are restricted, and a higher Phi(F) could be expected. But in fact, the strong pi-pi interactions between the luminogens cause heavier emission quenching, and the Phi(F) of the molecular aggregates is as low as 9%. In the single crystal, as the crystallographic data revealed, the two phenyl groups in the same diphenylacetylene unit are highly coplanar and the conjugation planes of the adjacent diphenylacetylene units are orthogonal to each other. Such molecular conformation and chromophore packing eliminate the intermolecular pi-pi interaction thereby greatly reducing the pi-pi interaction that caused fluorescence quenching, and meanwhile, the orthogonal packing allows the formation of C-H center dot center dot center dot pi. bonding between the adjacent phenyl groups to lock the intramolecular rotations and retain fluorescence. As a result, the FOEB single crystal shows evidently enhanced emission. Besides the CIEE property, FOEB demonstrates good liquid crystal property due to the diphenylacetylene mesogen and solvatochromic and mechnochromic effects due to the modification of diphenylacetylene with introduction of electron donor and acceptor functionalities.
Aggregation-Induced Emission Property of a Novel Pt(Ⅱ) Metal Complex and Its Self-Sensitized Oxidation Reaction in Photo-Excitation State

Abstract:The excited states of transition metal complexes with a wide range of photochemical and photophysical properties have attracted considerable attention recently. However, the luminescence property is affected by concentration quenching in practical applications. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is an effective strategy to solve this problem. In this work, a new imidazole-based N<^>C<^>N Pt(II) metal complex, PtP2IM, with the AIE property was synthesized and characterized according to its single crystal structure. Under visible light, we found that the metal complex undergoes a photo-oxidation reaction with the generation of a new red-emitting, imidazole/benzoylimino-based N<^>C<^>N' Pt(II) metal complex, PtPIMO, which was also confirmed by the crystal structure. Additional studies on the reaction process and conditions of this photo-oxidation reaction were conducted using different methods, such as NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and so on. The experimental results showed that the change from PtP2IM to PtPIMO gradually occurred, and the new photochemical reaction was finally concluded as the C=C double bond in either one of the two imidazole rings of the PtP2IM complex was attacked by oxygen to generate a new complex, PtPIMO, under photoirradiation in air. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements demonstrated the production of singlet oxygen, which is an excited state of oxygen with a high energy. Through the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the electronic transition was determined to be a metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) in which more energy could transfer from the triplet excited state of PtP2IM to the ground-state oxygen to generate singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) with a high intersystem crossing (ISC) efficiency due to the spin-orbit coupling of Pt heavy atoms. When large amounts of the singlet capture agent, triethylenediamine (TEDA) were added, the previously observed UV-Vis spectra change that corresponded to the photo oxidation reaction was not detected, which means that the photo-oxidation reaction observed in the case of PtP2IM was because of the oxidation by singlet oxygen. When oxygen was removed, excellent photostability and an obvious aggregation-induced emission (AIE) were observed for PtP2IM with the luminescent quantum efficiency of PtP2IM in solution and as a film at similar to 3% and similar to 20%, respectively. Based on the packing structure in the crystal, we observed that there were no strong intermolecular interactions, such as pi-pi or Pt-Pt interactions. Additionally, many intermolecular CH-pi bonds between the two adjacent PtP2IM molecules were observed, which could effectively limit the rotation of the peripheral phenyl group linked to the imidazole ring. Thus, the AIE property of PtP2IM was attributed to the restricted intramolecular rotation (RIR) effect of the peripheral flexible phenyl group that was linked to the imidazole ring in the solid state in which the vibration of multiple peripheral benzene rings was effectively suppressed. This decreased the non-radiative transition rate and induced the high luminescent quantum efficiency. In the aggregation state, PtP2IM still demonstrated the photo-oxidation reaction by singlet oxygen. Thus, we report a new Pt(II) metal complex, PtP2IM, with the AIE property that can undergo an uncommon photo-oxidation reaction in the photo-excitation state. This work aimed to elucidate the basic photochemical and photophysics of transition metal complexes with the AIE property.
Photochemically Enhanced Emission by Introducing Rational Photoactive Subunits into an Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogen.

Abstract:Herein, we propose a rational design strategy by introducing photoactive thienyl and pyridyl groups into an AIE-active tetraarylethene skeleton to achieve highly efficient photochemistry-activated fluorescence enhancement from dominantly photo-physical aggregation-induced emission behavior, and prove that such photoactivated fluorescence enhancement is perfectly suited for superstable photocontrollable dual-mode patterning applications in both solution and solid matrix. It is found that the photoactivated fluorescence of designed AIEgen is attributed to the irreversible cyclized-dehydrogenation reaction under UV irradiation, and the oxidation product has a brighter fluorescence in both solution and solid states owning to its rigid and planar structure. The overall transformation rate of the AIEgen from its opened form to dehydrogenated form is up to nearly 100 % in a short period of UV irradiation, and the fast transformation and the stable product of this photochemical reaction guarantees super stability of photocontrolled patterning, which can be applied in photoactivated dual-mode patterning and advanced anti-counterfeiting.
Photoinduced crystal melting with luminescence evolution based on conformational isomerisation

Abstract:The phenomenon of crystal melting by light irradiation, known as photo-induced crystal-to-liquid transition (PCLT), can dramatically change material properties with high spatiotemporal resolution. However, the diversity of compounds exhibiting PCLT is severely limited, which hampers further functionalisation of PCLT-active materials and the fundamental understandings of PCLT. Here, we report on heteroaromatic 1,2-diketones as the new class of PCLT-active compounds, whose PCLT is based on conformational isomerisation. In particular, one of the diketones demonstrates luminescence evolution prior to crystal melting. Thus, the diketone crystal exhibits dynamic multistep changes in the luminescence colour and intensity during continuous ultraviolet irradiation. This luminescence evolution can be ascribed to the sequential PCLT processes of crystal loosening and conformational isomerisation before macroscopic melting. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, thermal analysis, and theoretical calculations of two PCLT-active and one inactive diketones revealed weaker intermolecular interactions for the PCLT-active crystals. In particular, we observed a characteristic packing motif for the PCLT-active crystals, consisting of an ordered layer of diketone core and a disordered layer of triisopropylsilyl moieties. Our results demonstrate the integration of photofunction with PCLT, provide fundamental insights into the melting process of molecular crystals, and will diversify the molecular design of PCLT-active materials beyond classical photochromic scaffolds such as azobenzenes.
Tricyano-Methylene-Pyridine Based High-Performance Aggregation-Induced Emission Photosensitizer for Imaging and Photodynamic Therapy

Abstract:Photosensitizers equipped with high reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation capability and bright emission are essential for accurate tumor imaging and precise photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, traditional aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) photosensitizers cannot simultaneously produce desirable ROS and bright fluorescence, resulting in poor image-guided therapy effect. Herein, we report an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizer TCM-Ph with a strong donor–π–acceptor (D–π–A) structure, which greatly separates the HOMO–LUMO distribution and reduces the ΔEST, thereby increasing the number of triplet excitons and producing more ROS. The AIE photosensitizer TCM-Ph has bright near-infrared emission, as well as a higher ROS generation capacity than the commercial photosensitizers Bengal Rose (RB) and Chlorine e6 (Ce6), and can effectively eliminate cancer cells under image guidance. Therefore, the AIE photosensitizer TCM-Ph has great potential to replace the commercial photosensitizers.

Abstract:Inspired by the concept of ionic charge‐transfer complexes for the Mott insulator, integer‐charge‐transfer (integer‐CT) cocrystals are designed for NIR photo‐thermal conversion (PTC). With amino‐styryl‐pyridinium dyes and F4TCNQ serving as donor/acceptor (D/A) units, integer‐CT cocrystals, including amorphous stacking "salt" and segregated stacking "ionic crystal", are synthesized by mechanochemistry and solution method, respectively. Surprisingly, the integer‐CT cocrystals are self‐assembled only through multiple D‐A hydrogen bonds (C−H···X (X=N, F)). Strong charge‐transfer interactions in cocrystals contribute to the strong light‐harvesting ability at 200‐1500 nm. Under 808nm laser illumination, both the "salt" and "ionic crystal" display excellent PTC efficiency beneficial from ultrafast (~2 ps) nonradiative decay of excited states. Thus integer‐CT cocrystals are potential candidates for rapid, efficient, scalable PTC platforms. Especially amorphous "salt" with good photo/thermal stability is highly desirable in practical large‐scale solar‐harvesting/conversion applications in water environment. This work verifies the validity of the integer‐CT cocrystal strategy, and charts a promising path to synthesize amorphous PTC materials by mechanochemical method in one‐step.

Photomechanical Luminescence from Through‐Space Conjugated AIEgens

Abstract:AbstractTransforming molecular motions into the macroscopic scale is a topic of great interest to nanoscience. The photomechanical effect is a promising strategy to achieve this goal. Herein, we report an intriguing photomechanical luminescence driven by the photodimerization of 2‐phenylbenzo[b]thiophene 1,1‐dioxide (P‐BTO) in molecular crystals and elucidate the working mechanism and substituent effect through crystallographic analysis and theoretical calculations. Striking splitting, hopping, and bending mechanical behaviors accompanied by a significant blue fluorescence enhancement are observed for P‐BTO crystals under UV light, which is attributed to the formation of photodimer 2P‐BTO. Although 2P‐BTO is poorly π‐conjugated because of the central cyclobutane ring, it exhibits prominent through‐space conjugation and aggregation‐induced emission (AIE), affording strong solid‐state blue fluorescence at 415 nm with an excellent quantum yield of up to 96.2 %.

Abstract:The short spin lifetimes of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals can find immediate applications in molecular photochemistry that largely relies on spin-relaxed triplet excited states. In CsPbBr3 nanocrystals surface-anchored with rhodamine B molecules, excitation of either the nanocrystal or the molecule induces charge separation, and a rapid spin-flip of the carrier inside the nanocrystal enables high-yield formation of molecular triplets through charge recombination. Leveraging the complementary spectral coverage of CsPbBr3 and rhodamine, we achieve efficient white-light-driven triplet-fusion photon upconversion and singlet-oxygen generation.

Abstract:Harnessing the photoinduced phase transitions in organic crystals, especially the changes in shape and structure across various dimensions, offers a fascinating avenue for exact spatiotemporal control, which is crucial for developing future smart devices. In our study, we report a new photoactive molecular crystal made from (E)-2-(3-phenyl-allylidene)malonate ((E)-PADM). When exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light at 365 nm, this compound experiences an E-to-Z photoisomerization in liquid solution and a crystal-to-liquid phase transition in solid crystals. Remarkably, nanoscopic crystalline rods boost their melting rate and degree compared to bulk crystals, indicating that miniaturization enhances the photoinduced melting effect. Our results demonstrate a simple approach to rapidly drive molecular crystals into liquids via photochemical reactions and phase transitions.

Abstract:Luminogens characteristic of aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) have been extensively exploited for the development of imaging-guided photodynamic therapeutic (PDT) agents. However, intramolecular rotation of donor-acceptor (D-A) type AIEgens favors non-radiative decay of photonic energy which results in unsatisfactory fluorescence quantum and singlet oxygen yields. To address this issue, we developed several molecularly engineered AIEgens with partially "locked" molecular structures enhancing both fluorescence emission and the production of triplet excitons. A triphenylphosphine group was introduced to form a D-A conjugate, improving water solubility and the capacity for mitochondrial localization of the resulting probes. Experimental and theoretical analyses suggest that the much higher quantum and singlet oxygen yield of a structurally "significantly-locked" probe (LOCK-2) than its "partially locked" (LOCK-1) and "unlocked" equivalent (LOCK-0) is a result of suppressed AIE and twisted intramolecular charge transfer. LOCK-2 was also used for the mitochondrial-targeting, fluorescence image-guided PDT of liver cancer cells.

Abstract:Classic tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complex (Ru-bpy) with high electrochemiluminescence (ECL) efficiency still suffers from a serious aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) problem, which greatly weakens its ECL efficiency to restrict further applications in solid-state ECL imaging and light-emitting devices. Herein, the crystallization-induced enhanced ECL (CIE-ECL) of tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) derivatives (Ru-TPE) are reported by decorating Ru-bpy with inherent aggregation-induced emission active tetraphenylethene (TPE), which effectively eliminates the detrimental pi-pi stacking interactions and thus helps Ru-bpy surmount notorious ACQ effect in the aqueous phase. The Ru-TPE shows negligible ECL emission in solution but produces a strong ECL emission upon crystallization. Surprisingly, the ECL efficiency of Ru-TPE crystals is 20 and 3 times higher than that of its solution and Ru-bpy crystals, respectively. Experimental and structural analysis reveals that such a CIE-ECL effect originates from the restricted intramolecular rotation and ordered molecular packing. Moreover, the high-resolution ECL imaging of a single Ru-TPE crystal is successfully demonstrated. This work provides a new design strategy for achieving high efficiency in solid-state ECL imaging and devices.

Abstract:Controllable aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) by photoexcitation can be conducted within a single solvent, thus opening new opportunities for preparing and processing smart materials. However, undesired side-reactions like photooxidation that can easily occur in the organic phase remain, limiting their applications. To enhance the operability of photoexcitation-controlled AIEgens (to specifically produce a phosphorescence characteristic) in the organic phase, in this work, we employ a typical prototype, hexathiobenzene, usually as the specific phosphorescent group, and investigate a series of physical and chemical factors, such as light intensity, dissolved oxygen content, and solvent polarity, to explore ways to control the photoexcitation-controllable AIEgens against the impurities from side-reactions. An organogel strategy was also developed to minimize interference factors and improve the practical application ability. We believe that the presented results provide new insights into the further development of the photoexcitation-based functional materials and the promotion of their practical usage.
Diethylamino Functionalized Tetraphenylethenes: Structural And Electronic Modulation Of Photophysical Properties, Implication For The Cie Mechanism And Application To Cell Imaging

Abstract:Deciphering structural and electronic effects on photophysical properties of aggregation-or crystallization-induced emission (AIE or CIE) luminogens is essential to the related mechanistic understanding, molecular design and applications. Herein, based on AIE-active tetraphenylethene (TPE), a group of diethylamino (DEA) functionalized analogues, i.e. DEATPE, DFDEATPE and CNDEATPE were designed and prepared. The introduction of DEA groups makes DEATPE CIE-active rather than typically AIE-active. Further incorporation of fluorine atoms renders DFDEATPE with AIE and crystallization-induced emission enhancement (CIEE) characteristics. Furthermore, unlike the nonmechanochromic TPE, these luminogens exhibit high contrast mechanochromism. Specifically, DEATPE and DFDEATPE demonstrate rapid self-recovery within a few minutes or even several seconds. Such swift restoration of solid emission clearly indicates active intramolecular motions even in the solid states, which is indicative of the CIE mechanism. Additionally, luminogenic nanoparticles were successfully utilized in cell imaging, thanks to their high efficiency and biocompatibility.

Abstract:Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a promising approach to cancer treatment. Heptamethine cyanine (Cy7) is an attractive photothermal reagent because of its large molar absorption coefficient, good biocompatibility, and absorption of near‐infrared irradiation. However, the photothermal conversion efficiency of Cy7 is limited without ingenious excitation‐state regulation. In this study, the photothermal conversion ability of Cy7 is efficiently enhanced based on photo‐induced electron transfer (PET)‐triggered structural deformation. Three Cy7 derivatives, whose Cl is replaced by carbazole, phenoxazine, and phenothiazine at the meso‐position (CZ‐Cy7, PXZ‐Cy7, and PTZ‐Cy7), are presented as examples to demonstrate the regulation of the energy release of the excited states. Because the phenothiazine moiety exhibits an obvious PET‐induced structural deformation in the excited state, which quenches the fluorescence and inhibits intersystem crossing of S1→T1, PTZ‐Cy7 exhibits a photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 77.5%. As a control, only PET occurs in PXZ‐Cy7, with a PCE of 43.5%. Furthermore, the PCE of CZ‐Cy7 is only 13.0% because there is no PET process. Interestingly, PTZ‐Cy7 self‐assembles into homogeneous nanoparticles exhibiting passive tumor‐targeting properties. Abstract:The incorporation of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens provides a molecule with enhanced fluorescent emission in the solid state. A representative AIEgen compound is tetraphenylethene (TPE). A series of new conjugates of quinolone derivatives with TPE units (1a - 1f) was synthesized and characterized. The influence on the photophysics of 1a - 1e with a variety of functional groups was investigated systematically by spectroscopic methods and simulated by density-functional theory calculations. A centrosymmetric compound donor-acceptor-donor-type compound 1f with two TPE moieties proved to be the most promising multi-functional material, it exhibited tri-colored (489-569 nm) fluorescence characteristics in tetrahydrofuran-H2O solution with a different water fraction and intense tri-colored solvatochromic (blue, green, and yellow) behaviors. These compounds could be applied as promising acid-base gas probe based on their evident color switch. Compounds 1a - 1f showed the advantage of being a potential piezochromic material.

Abstract:The development of novel photosensitizers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics has aroused tremendous interest, because it could combine efficient bioimaging with precise photodynamic therapy, which would thus dramatically promote applications in biomedical treatment. Among various AIE luminogens (AIEgens), heterocycle-containing molecules are highly promising for this usage because of their high photostability and tunable electronic properties. In this work, a pyrazine-containing AIEgen with a dicyanopyrazine moiety as an electron acceptor and a triphenylamine unit as an electron donor was chosen for study. The V-shaped donor-π-acceptor-π-donor structure of the AIEgen endowed its nanoparticles with excellent nonlinear optical properties for two-photon cell imaging under near-infrared laser excitation. Also, under the same excitation, the nanoparticles could produce reactive oxygen species and further kill the cells efficiently and accurately. The present work thus presents a pyrazine-containing AIEgen as a new photosensitizer for imaging-guided two-photon photodynamic therapy and gives more opportunities for deep-tissue treatment of cancer in future research.
Pressure-Induced Emission Enhancement In Hexaphenylsilole: A Computational Study

Abstract:Organic mechano-responsive luminescent materials have aroused wide attention in recent years for their tremendous utilities. Pressure-induced emission enhancement (PIEE) refers to a novel phenomenon whereby a solid-state luminogen exhibits enhanced emission intensity upon compression, in contrast to the conventional pressure-caused luminescence quenching. The mechanism behind PIEE remains unclear. It is desirable to unravel the effects of pressurization on the optical emission for molecular materials. Here, we carried out an in-depth theoretical investigation on the excited-state decay processes of crystalline hexaphenylsilole (HPS) at high pressure by combining dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) crystalline-structure simulations, hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations and our thermal vibration correlation function formalism. It was found that the fluorescence quantum efficiency first increases sharply and then levels off as the pressure rises from ambient to 10.86 GPa. This is because the molecular electron-vibration couplings of low-frequency modes (<200 cm(-1)) are remarkably reduced owing to the pressure-triggered closer molecular packing, slowing down the non-radiative process. When the pressure rises above 5.06 GPa, the electron-vibration couplings of low-frequency modes gradually reach a plateau, although those of high-frequency modes (1400-1800 cm(-1)) start to decrease slightly, resulting in the saturation of the non-radiative rate constant. Resonance Raman spectroscopy is suggested to probe the above hypothesis in unravelling the PIEE mechanism of HPS. At the same time, a theoretical protocol is proposed to quantitively predict the PIEE properties, thus aiding the rational design of advanced PIEE materials.

Abstract:In this article a series of photochromic bithienylethenes containing coumarin fluorescent unit were synthesized and their properties including photochromic behavior and fluorescent properties were also investigated. One compound not only exhibited photochromic behaviors but also had aggregation-induced emission characteristics. The fluorescence could also be enhanced continuously by the photo-isomerization reaction. As ring-closed isomer formed, the rigid structure of compound enhanced the aggregation so that the nanoparticle in the solution increased constantly. Thus, this may provide a novel approach for preparing a new family with AIE characteristics and photochromic properties which may have the potential application in the optical memory and nonlinear optics.
