Abstract:A series of new P-bridgehead tripodal urea-based anion receptors 1–3 bearing phosphine oxide (PO) were synthesized and characterized. Their anion-binding ability was examined by UV–vis, 1H NMR, 31P NMR, and ESI-MS. The results revealed that receptors 1–3 showed good sensitivity, selectivity, and binding affinity for H2PO4− over NO3− and Br−, and among them receptor 2 showed the best binding affinity for H2PO4− over F−, Br−, CH3COO−, HSO4−, and NO3−. The Job plot experiments indicated that receptors 1–3 formed 1:1 stoichiometric complex with H2PO4−.

Abstract:Five new receptors containing furo[3',4':5,6]pyrido[2,3-c]pyrazole core were synthesized. The properties of the receptors with anions such as F-, Cl-, Br-, AcO-, HSO4 - and H2PO4 - were examined by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results showed that the receptors have good selectivity to F- and AcO-. However, no obvious changes were observed on the other anions. The Job plot indicated that a 1:1 stoichiometry complex was formed between the receptors and anions. The results also showed hydrogen- bonding interaction was formed between the receptors and anions.

Abstract:Two new tripodal receptors based on pyrrole-and dipyrromethane-functionalised derivatives of a sterically geared precursor, 1,3,5-tris(aminomethyl)-2,4,6-triethylbenzene, are reported; these systems, compounds 1 and 2, display high affinity and selectivity for tetrahedral anionic guests, in particular dihydrogen phosphate, pyrophosphate and hydrogen sulphate, in acetonitrile as inferred from isothermal titration calorimetry measurements. Support for the anion-binding ability of these systems comes from theoretical calculations and a single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure of the 2:2 (host:guest) dihydrogen phosphate complex is obtained in the case of the pyrrole-based receptor system, 1.

Abstract:A new series of acyclic anion receptors (1–4) based on methyl 5-(aminomethyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate were designed and synthesized. The anion recognition properties of these receptors were examined by 1H NMR spectroscopy and rationalized by density functional theoretical calculation. Receptor 1 displays the highest affinity and selectivity for anionic guests mainly due to the intramolecular hydrogen bonds and rigid molecular geometry.

However, no obvious changes were observed on the other anions. The Job plot indicated that a 1 : 1 stoichiometry complex was formed between receptors and anions. The results also showed that hydrogen-bonding interaction was formed between the receptors and anions. The combination assumed above was confirmed by the results of H-1 NMR titration.

Abstract:A pyrrolyl-based triazolophane, incorporating CH and NH donor groups, acts as a receptor for the pyrophosphate anion in chloroform solution. It shows selectivity for this trianion, followed by HSO(4)(-) > H(2)PO(4)(-) > Cl(-) > Br(-) (all as the corresponding tetrabutylammonium salts), with NH-anion interactions being more important than CH-anion interactions. In the solid state, the receptor binds the pyrophosphate anion in a clip-like slot via NH and CH hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:A new type anion receptors containing indeno[2′,1′:5,6]pyrido[2,3‐d]pyrimidine have been synthesized via three‐component reaction of aldehyde, 6‐aminopyrimidine‐2,4‐dione, and 1,3‐indanedione in aqueous media. Abstract:A novel acyclic hexapodal host ( 4a ) featuring with multiple formyl groups, pyrrole cores, and ester linkages has been prepared and characterized through 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, high-resolution mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. This versatile host molecule exhibits robust anion recognition for CN – , F – , SO 4 2– , HSO 4 – , H 2 PO 4 – , and HP 2 O 7 3– with the binding constants spanning 0.18×10 5 M -1 to 7.72×10 5 M -1 . Interactions with these anions were elucidated through UV-visible and 1 H NMR titrations, complemented by DFT calculations. At low guest concentrations (5- to 100-fold excess), a 1:1 complexation is predominant. However, at high concentrations (1000-fold excess), the host's flexibility promotes the assembly of other host-guest complexes. Comparative studies with related pyrrole-based hexapodal ester 4b and tetrapodal aldehyde 4c highlight the importance of peripheral formyl groups, pyrrolic NH groups, the number of pendant arms, and conformational adaptability in anion recognition. These insights underscore the potential of acyclic multipodal hosts in advancing supramolecular chemistry and anion recognition.

Abstract:A new family of aryl-extended calix[4]pyrroles with two phoshonate groups can act as ion-pair receptors for guest alkylammonium/phosphonium chloride salts, and the ion-pair binding mode and binding affinity of these hosts are different. In the present contribution, the origin of opposite ion-pair binding behavior for two typical hosts ii and oo towards primary ammonium chloride salt and quaternary phosphonium chloride salt was investigated using quantum mechanics (QM) calculations and a new noncovalent weak interaction analysis method. Two types of arrangements - separated and contact - were taken into account for each complex. The binding energy suggests that contact and separated arrangements are the favorable binding modes for receptor ii and oo respectively. Furthermore, the primary alkylammonium chloride salt binds stronger to ii than to oo, while the quaternary phosphonium chloride salt binds stronger to oo than to ii, in agreement with the experiment. Moreover, geometry, charge transfer based on natural bond orbital (NBO) and noncovalent weak interactions analysis suggest that the hydrogen bonding and cation-pi interactions play a critical role in ion-pair recognition of ii and oo respectively due to the different orientation of the P=O groups. This work further unveils the mechanism of ion-pair recognition by new calix[4]pyrrole bis-phosphonate receptors, while opening exciting perspectives for the design of stronger and more efficient calix[4]pyrrole-based ion-pair receptors.

Abstract:Two novel receptors bearing phenol group and diamide were synthesized and characterized.The UV-vis titration experiments revealed that receptor 1 had a better selectivity to AcO-in DMSO,the association constants followed the trend:AcO->F->H2PO4->Cl-,Br-,I-.Receptor 2 had a better selectivity to F-,the order of selectivity:F->AcO->H2PO4-,Cl-,Br-,I-.The recognition behavior of receptor 3 only containing diamide was investigated by UV-vis and 1H NMR titration experiments.The results revealed that 3 complexed F-through hydrogen bonding interaction with the-NH,but the interaction was very weak and could not be efficient anion recognition.The further insights to the nature of interaction were investigated by 1H NMR titration experiments and theoretical investigation,which demonstrated that the receptor 1 and 2 complexed anion through hydrogen bonding interaction with OH better than NH.

Abstract:Three diastereomeric bis-phosphonate cavitands based on an aryl extended calix[4]pyrrole can act as ion-pair receptors for alkylammonium/phosphonium chloride salts. In this contribution, the ion-pair binding mode and binding affinity were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and new nonconvalent weak interaction analysis method. One of the three receptors was chosen as the host and two guests were chosen to model quaternary phosphonium chloride salts and primary ammonium chloride salts respectively, and two types of arrangements - separated and contact - were taken into account for each guest. The binding energy suggests that contact arrangement is the favorable binding mode for this receptor and it prefers to bind primary ammonium chloride salts rather than quaternary phosphonium chloride salts both in the gas-phase and in solution, in agreement with the experiment. Moreover, geometry analysis and charge transfer based on natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis suggest that the binding modes and binding affinities of the receptor towards different ion-pairs are determined by the amount and strength of hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, nonconvalent weak interactions between the host and the guests have been explored to unravel the driving forces responsible for the ion-pair recognition. There are hydrogen bonding, van der Waals, cation-pi, ion-induced dipole and charge-charge interactions in ion-pair recognition, and hydrogen bonding interactions play the dominant role in this process. This work unveils the mechanism of ion-pair recognition by new calix[4]pyrrole bisphosphonate receptors, while opening exciting perspectives for the design of novel calix[4]pyrrole-based ion-pair receptors.

Abstract:The reaction of 2,2-diferrocenylpropanealkylimidazole with sodium 2-bromoethanesulphonate led to the formation of 2,2-diferrocenylpropane-substituted imidazolium sulphonate salt. All of these compounds were characterized by IR, MS, HRMS, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra. The anion binding studies were carried out using various techniques such as electrochemistry (cyclic voltammetry) and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior indicated that the receptor 1 had unique selectivities for F- and H2PO4- with the remarkable phenomenon of merging the two redox peaks in response to the increment addition of the anions. H-1 NMR titrations demonstrated that the receptor 1 could bind anions in a (C-H)(+)center dot center dot center dot X- type ionic hydrogen bonding and showed affinity and high selectivity for F- anion in DMSO-d(6) on account of the intensity of the imidazolium C-H resonance decreased gradually and disappeared along with the increase of F- and had a triplet around the 16 ppm region for the HF2- ion, indicating deprotonation and fluoride ion mediated hydrogen-deuterium exchanges. Abstract:Two pyridinium amide-based receptors L1 and L2 with a small difference of H-bond position of the amide have been synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, they exhibited a huge difference in sensing towards AcO- and H2PO4 -, respectively. Receptor L1 was found to be ‘naked-eye’ selective for AcO- anions, while receptor L2 showed clear fluorescence enhancement selective to H2PO4 - anion. The recognition ability has been established by fluorescence emission, UV-vis spectra, and 1HNMR titration.

Abstract:Three tetraurea-appended porphyrin derivatives were synthesized and applied as anion receptors to complex with various anions, including F−, Cl−, Br−, I−, NO3−, HSO4−, and AcO−. The binding stoichiometries were all measured to be 1:1 and high binding abilities of these receptors toward the anions were demonstrated with the association constants of up to 1.1×108L/mol. The complexation of the receptors with anions was further unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis

Abstract:A new calix[4]pyrrole type anion receptor (1) containing two anti-symmetrically meso-situated acenaphthenequinone moieties has been constructed by a “one-pot” facile synthesis. The crystal structures of 1 and 1·F− complex were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The crystal of 1·F− complex witnessed that a CH group from the acenaphthenequinone participated in anion binding through CH…F hydrogen bond which was also conformed in solution by 1H NMR titration in CD2Cl2. The anion binding property of 1 was studied in CH2Cl2 using UV–vis spectrometry and the results reflected that it bound selectively with F− and Cl− ions.

Abstract:Anion complexation of a flexible bis(pyridylcarbamate) receptor, 3-pyridinyl-carbamic-acid-1,2-ethanediylester (L), is reported. Upon addition of a series of inorganic acids (H3PO4, H2SO4, HClO4, HCl and HBr), the ligand L can be doubly protonated and bind the anions through hydrogen bonding interactions, affording the adducts 1-5. The binding modes of the protonated ligand ([LH2](2+)) with anions in 1-5 in the solid state are established by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Of particular interest is that the three oxoanion complexes (1-3) feature intriguing anionic polymer fashions, such as the novel double-stranded dihydrogen phosphate chain in 1, the infinite [-sulfate-(H2O)(2)-](n) chain in 2, and hydrogen-bridged helical perchlorate chain in 3. For complexes 4 and 5, the packing diagram displays a layered structure with the halide anions located between the adjacent cationic arrays. Receptor L can selectively crystallize with the sulfate anion from the acid mixture H3PO4, H2SO4, HClO4, HCl and HBr.

Abstract:A new ferrocene‐pyrene dyad Fc‐PYS for anion recognition was rationally designed and synthesized, in which the ferrocene and the pyrene groups were combined by the imidazolium and sulfonamide anion donors. The structure of the probe was characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. The anion recognition performance of the probe was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. In acetonitrile solution, Fc‐PYS can fluorescently recognize F− and H2PO4− with different models. Upon the addition of H2PO4−, the fluorescence of Fc‐PYS was increased. However, the complexation with F− quenched its fluorescence. At the same time, Fc‐PYS showed electrochemical response toward basic anions F−, H2PO4−, and AcO− with the ferrocene‐based red/ox potential a negative shift with H2PO4− > F− > AcO−. Furthermore, the binding mechanism between Fc‐PYS and anion has been investigated in detail by 1H NMR titration.

Abstract:Strong electron-deficient heterocycles of acetyl Fipronil (F3) was designed and synthesized, its ability for anion recognition was investigated by UV and NMR analyses. This novel Fipronil-based receptor F3 shows strong binding affinity with acetate (⩾107M−1), phosphate or fluoride ion through efficient deprotonation. In addition, its interaction with chloride anion or other weak base anions through stable intermolecular H-bonding was also reported.

Abstract:Due to the fundamental roles that anions play in a wide range of chemical and biological processes, numerous efforts have been devoted to the design of receptors capable of selectively binding and sensing anions. Herein, carbazole derivative (1) bearing two model amides was synthesized by coupling 1,8-diamino-3,6-dichlorocarbazole with pyrrole-2-carbonylchloride in the presence of triethylamine. The structure of compound 1 was characterized by X-ray crystallography. The anions recognition of the compound 1 was studied by the UV-Vis and fluorescent spectra method in highly polar solvent of DMSO. The results show that strong anion binding is observed for H2PO4-. Obvious fluorescence "switched on" behavior is observed upon addition of H2PO4- to receptor 1, which can be used to discriminate H2PO4- from the other anions. H-1 NMR analysis revealed that all the five NH of receptor 1 were involved in the hydrogen bonding interactions with the anions leading to a conformation exchange during the anion binding.
