Abstract:Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of meteoric water are known to correlate with surface air temperature, except in tropical areas. This relationship has been described using a number of terms corresponding to specific observations, such as latitude, altitude and seasonal effects. However, these temperature effects do not seem to apply to precipitation in monsoonal areas of Asia. Questions have been raised as to whether the isotopic composition of meteoric water can be used to reconstruct paleomonsoon intensity. Tree rings of two modern spruce trees (Picea meyeri) and a 10,000-yr-old timber (Picea jezoensis) were analyzed for hydrogen isotopic composition. On average, the older tree is depleted in deuterium by 45‰ compared to the modern trees. We attribute this isotopic depletion to the strength of summer monsoons, which were more intense in the early Holocene than at present. Although this study is not definitive, it suggests that paleomonsoon intensity can be reconstructed by direct or proxy methods that yield the oxygen or hydrogen isotopic composition of meteoric water.
Early Summer Hydroclimatic Signals Are Captured Well by Tree-Ring Earlywood Width in the Eastern Qinling Mountains, Central China

Abstract:In the humid and semi-humid regions of China, tree-ring-width (TRW) chronologies offer limited moisture-related climatic information. To gather additional climatic information, it would be interesting to explore the potential of the intra-annul tree-ring-width indices (i.e., the earlywood width, EWW, and latewood width, LWW). To achieve this purpose, TRW, EWW, and LWW were measured from the tree-ring samples of Pinus tabuliformis originating from the semi-humid eastern Qinling Mountains, central China. Standard (STD) and signal-free (SSF) chronologies of all parameters were created using these detrending methods including (1) negative exponential functions combined with linear regression with negative (or zero) slope (NELR), (2) cubic smoothing splines with a 50 % frequency cutoff at 67 % of the series length (SP67), and (3) age-dependent splines with an initial stiffness of 50 years (SPA50). The results showed that EWW chronologies were significantly negatively correlated with temperature but positively correlated with precipitation and soil moisture conditions during the current early-growing season. By contrast, LWW and TRW chronologies had weaker relationships with these climatic factors. The strongest climatic signal was detected for the EWW STD chronology detrended with the NELR method, explaining 50 % of the variance in the May–July self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index (MJJ scPDSI) during the instrumental period 1953–2005. Based on this relationship, the MJJ scPDSI was reconstructed back to 1868 using a linear regression function. The reconstruction was validated by comparison with other hydroclimatic reconstructions and historical document records from adjacent regions. Our results highlight the potential of intra-annual tree-ring indices for reconstructing seasonal hydroclimatic variations in humid and semi-humid regions of China. Furthermore, our reconstruction exhibits a strong in-phase relationship with a newly proposed East Asian summer monsoon index (EASMI) before the 1940s on the decadal and longer timescales, which may be due to the positive response of the local precipitation to EASMI. Nonetheless, the cause for the weakened relationship after the 1940s is complex, and cannot be solely attributed to the changing impacts of precipitation and temperature.

Abstract:Dust shortwave absorbability suffers from significant uncertainties. We investigated the radiative effects of dust aerosols from the circum‐Tibet region using four shortwave absorbability schemes and examined their impacts on the East Asian summer monsoon by using the Community Earth System Model (CESM). We adopted superspheroidal models to compute dust aerosol optical properties and found that more absorptive particles have larger asymmetry factor and lower single‐scattering albedo. Meiyu precipitation, as a part of the East Asian summer monsoon, is weakened by dust aerosols, particularly for the convective precipitation. The mechanism is that dust aerosols transported mainly from the Gobi desert radiatively heat the lower atmosphere to the north of the Meiyu rainband and decrease the meridional temperature gradient, leading to the weakening of the midtropospheric westerly jet over the Meiyu rainband, which is important for convection. More absorptive dust aerosols with a stronger radiative heating effect inhibit more convective Meiyu precipitation.

Using the proxy system model (PSM) of S 18 O WR , we obtained a modeled S 18 O WR time series that is significantly positively correlated with the measured S 18 O WR time series. The modeled and measured S 18 O WR series show similar relationships with monthly RH. Sensitivity experiments with PSM revealed that the June RH signal is originated from the oxygen isotopes of source water and leaf water. Rapid cellulose formation in June plays a role in enhancing the June RH signal. Our study demonstrates how S 18 O WR record early summer hydroclimate signals from a process perspective, and that the PSM is effective in modelling the interannual S 18 O WR variability in the Meiyu region.
A tree-ring δ18O based reconstruction of East Asia summer monsoon over the past two centuries

Abstract:The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) exhibits considerable decadal variations since the late 20th century. Efforts to examine long-term behaviors and dynamics of the EASM are impeded largely due to the shortness of instrumental meteorological records. So far, reconstructions of the EASM with annual resolution from its core regions remain limited. We conduct the first 200-year robust EASM reconstruction based on tree-ring cellulose δ18O records derived from Pinus massoniana trees growing in the middle Yangtze River basin, one of the core EASM areas. The δ18O chronology accounts for 46.2% of the actual variation in an index of the EASM from 1948 to 2014. The reconstructed EASM indicates that the monsoon intensity was below average before the 1950s, peaked in the 1950s-1970s, and then began to decline. The reconstructed EASM is negatively correlated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), but this teleconnection is dynamic through time, i.e. enhanced (reduced) ENSO variability coheres with strong (weak) EASM-ENSO connections. In addition, despite high ENSO variability since the 1980s, the EASM-ENSO relationship weakened possibly due to anthropogenic impact, particularly aerosol emissions.

Abstract:Tree-ring stable oxygen isotope (δ18OTR) demonstrates the enormous potential for revealing hydrological climate changes and large-scale atmospheric circulations. Here, we established the 210-year δ18OTR chronology of Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. in Baotou, southwest Inner Mongolia, North China. The regional precipitation δ18O (δ18OP) and June-July-August relative humidity (RHJJA) were the two dominant environmental factors controlling the δ18OTR changes. Since the 1930s, the increasing δ18OTR values in the study region reflected the drying trend due to reducing precipitation and increasing temperature. The δ18OTR series in Baotou generally exhibited stronger correlations with three Indian summer monsoon (ISM) indexes than three East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) indexes during 1948–2009 AD. However, the δ18OTR record also significantly correlated with one EASM index. These results indicated that the Asian summer monsoon played an essential role in modifying the δ18OTR values, and the ISM possibly had more considerable influence compared with the EASM. We also found that the δ18OTR record had a higher correlation with the central-Pacific El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) than that with eastern-Pacific ENSO, probably because of the more substantial impact of the central-Pacific ENSO on the ISM.

Abstract:A tree ring width chronology developed from 58 samples taken from Chinese pine trees (Pinus tabulaeformis Carr.) growing in Shenyang city was studied to analyze the effects of solar activity, Global Surface Air Temperature Anomalies (GSATA) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) on annual radial growth. An excellent response of tree rings to solar activity and global environmental change was revealed, indicating that these urban Chinese pine trees are a suitable proxy for Sun-Earth system research despite their location in Shenyang, an industrial city. The information derived from annual growth rings of urban Chinese pine trees coincides with records from undisturbed trees in a natural location, and demonstrates significant synchronous response to solar activity in the periodic bands of 5–8, 10–12 and 20–30 years. The wave signal of tree growth was also affected and amplified by the combined effect of the PDO from 1900 to 2004 and GSATA from 1880 to 2004 with a short lag time, revealing 5–8, 11–13, and 20–23 year oscillatory modes. At 20–30 year timescale, Chinese pines validated the strong GSATA influence signal at 20.8 years, and may be the primary cause of the 20 and 23 year periodic waves of tree rings. Shenyang urban tree ring growth also showed high frequency variation (2—4 y) that may be due to low periodicity of solar activity, GSATA, PDO and local climate variations, especially in the 2–4 years band width.
Tree-ring δ18O from Southeast China reveals monsoon precipitation and ENSO variability

Abstract:Abstract Considerable advances have been made in use of tree-ring δ18O for climate reconstructions in Southeast China, the East Asian summer monsoon region. However, the relationships among tree-ring cellulose δ18O (δ18Ocell), local hydroclimate, precipitation δ18O (δ18Opre) and El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) have not yet been fully resolved. The usual interpretation has been that local hydroclimate influences δ18Ocell through both the “amount effect” on δ18Opre and evaporative enrichment, but it cannot fully explain the high inter-site correlation of δ18Ocell chronologies or their response pattern to ENSO. In this study, we use a newly-developed δ18Ocell chronology of Pinus massoniana from a water-stressed site in Zhejiang province, in combination with another three δ18Ocell chronologies in Southeast China, to investigate their climatic implications from a regional perspective. The results show that besides local hydroclimate, δ18Opre is also significantly correlated with δ18Ocell, but with different effects. Spatially homogeneous δ18Opre variation causes high spatial correlations among δ18Ocell from different sites. Analyses show that ENSO variations are responsible for the large-scale common signals in δ18Ocell by modulating δ18Opre. Therefore, combining δ18Ocell chronologies from different locations can enhance ENSO signals, which provides us new opportunities to reconstruct paleo-ENSO activities. Furthermore, eliminating the part of ENSO signal that is not related to the growing season hydroclimate from δ18Ocell can increase the explained variance of observed values. These findings provide a guide for future optimized ENSO and local paleoclimate reconstructions using δ18Ocell.

Abstract:Humid subtropical China is an “oasis” relative to other dry subtropics of the world due to the prevailing of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). Although many long climate sensitive tree-rings have been published to understand the historical climate change over various regions in China, long tree-ring chronologies in humid subtropical China are rare due to the difficulty to find old growth trees. This study established a tree-ring chronology spanning from 1776 to 2016 from Cryptomeria fortunei Hooibrenk ex Otto et Dietr in Liancheng area of humid subtropical China, which is also currently the longest chronology in Fujian province. Similar to the climate-growth relationships in neighboring regions, our tree-ring chronology is limited by cold temperature in winter and spring and drought in summer. In addition, a drought stress before the growing season also played a role in limiting the growth of our tree rings. Our climate sensitive tree rings showed different correlations with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) in different periods, possibly via modulation of the EASM.

Abstract:In this paper, we respond on Luo's doubt. We insist on the reality of our observation as we properly used the instruments. The night temperature reaches 3. 55℃ and thus the respiration rate will be very low at night. Due to low accessibility of high mountains, it is difficult to investigate the physiological activities of tim-berline trees. Our results supplement the current database and are thus not failed as Luo expressed in his paper.
An Asian Summer Monsoon-Related Relative Humidity Record from Tree-Ring δ18O in Gansu Province, North China

Abstract:The monsoon fringe region in North China (NC) is also an ecologically fragile zone. Improving our comprehension of the paleoclimate variations and their driving mechanisms in this region has great significance for environmental protection and agricultural economic development. In order to provide more reliable data for future climate forecasting and reduce the effects of climatic disasters in NC, we established a 328-year stable oxygen isotope (δ18O) chronology based on four Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. from Mt. Hasi, Gansu Province, and found that the tree-ring δ18O inherited the signals of summer (July–August) monsoonal precipitation δ18O (δ18OP). Correlation function analysis indicated that the tree-ring δ18O series responded significantly to the observed local relative humidity from July to August (RHJA) with r = −0.65 (n = 55, p < 0.001). Based on the clear physiological mechanism, we reconstructed the RHJA variations from 1685 to 2012 using a transfer function. Our reconstruction was very stable and had strong spatial representativeness, it was significantly positively correlated with Asian summer monsoon (ASM) indices, indicating that our reconstruction reflected the variations of ASM to a large extent. The RHJA series successfully captured the weakening of the ASM since the 1930s. There was a close connection between the reconstructed sequence and the East Pacific sea surface temperature (SST). Further analyses revealed that El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) may play important roles in the summer monsoon precipitation in NC.

Abstract:The West Tianmu Mountains, situated in the southeastern region of China, is profoundly influenced by the East Asian monsoon. Total ring oxygen isotope (S18O) has been used previously to reconstruct hydroclimatic signals during the growing season in this region, but high-resolution analyses, i.e., at the intra-annual scale, are scarce. Here, we selected four suitable Pinus taiwanensis Hayata tree cores, measured each ring's a-cellulose S18O values in both earlywood and latewood, and established earlywood and latewood S18Ocell chronologies from 1951 to 2019, overlapping the period of the observed meteorological data. The mass-weighted mean values of earlywood and latewood S18Ocell were calculated to build the total ring S18Ocell chronology. The total ring S18Ocell chronology is revealed to respond primarily to hydroclimate during the growing season, more specifically relative humidity (RH) during the period May to October. Earlywood S18Ocell chronology exhibits the highest correlation with May to June RH, while latewood S18Ocell chronology correlates significantly with August to October RH. This observation indicates that the extraction of different seasonal hydroclimatic signals, such as the early or late stages of the growing season, is feasible. Furthermore, we show that tree-ring S18Ocell is positively correlated with central and eastern Pacific sea surface temperatures and, accordingly, exhibiting a close connection with El NinoSouthern Oscillation (ENSO). Earlywood S18Ocell contains stronger ENSO signals than latewood for two reasons. Firstly, earlywood S18Ocell generally retains more precipitation S18O signals, and secondly, May to June precipitation S18O, which is more contained in earlywood than in latewood S18Ocell, has stronger connections with ENSO than other months.

Warm-season Hydroclimate Variability in Central China Since 1866 AD and Its Relations with the East Asian Summer Monsoon: Evidence from Tree-Ring Earlywood Width

Abstract:Abstract. Historical hydroclimate records derived from tree-ring parameters are scarce in the core region of East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) in China, limiting our understanding of the inter-decadal hydroclimate variability of this region and its possible connections with the EASM. In this study, standard chronologies of total tree-ring width (TRW), earlywood width (EWW), and latewood width (LWW) were created using tree-ring samples of Pinus tabulaeformis in the eastern Qinling Mountains, Central China. The strongest growth-climate relationship was found between EWW and May–July self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index (MJJ scPDSI). Therefore, a linear regression model, which explained 50.3 % of the variance in MJJ scPDSI (1951–2005), was developed to estimate the past MJJ scPDSI variations using EWW. The time series of MJJ scPDSI was extended back to the year 1866, and validated by independent hydroclimate series from nearby regions. Before the mid-1950s, the variations of MJJ scPDSI were in-phase with those of EASM intensity on decadal and longer timescales, suggesting that wet conditions would occur in the eastern Qinling Mountains when EASM was strengthened. Since the mid-1950s, however, the relationship has been out-of-phase. This phase change may be associated with an intensified dipole pattern of EASM precipitation.
Tree-ring delta O-18 from Southeast China reveals monsoon precipitation and ENSO variability

In this study, we use a newly-developed delta O-18(cell) chronology of Pinus massoniana from a water-stressed site in Zhejiang province, in combination with another three delta O-18(cell) chronologies in Southeast China, to investigate their climatic implications from a regional perspective. The results show that besides local hydroclimate, delta O-18(pre) is also significantly correlated with delta O-18(cell) but with different effects. Spatially homogeneous delta O-18(pre) variation causes high spatial correlations among delta(18)O(cell )from different sites. Analyses show that ENSO variations are responsible for the large-scale common signals in delta O-18(cell) by modulating delta O-18(pre). Therefore, combining delta O-18(cell) chronologies from different locations can enhance ENSO signals, which provides us new opportunities to reconstruct paleo-ENSO activities. Furthermore, eliminating the part of ENSO signal that is not related to the growing season hydroclimate from delta O-18(cell) can increase the explained variance of observed values. These findings provide a guide for future optimized ENSO and local paleoclimate reconstructions using delta O-18(cell).
Tree-ring Based February–April Precipitation Reconstruction for the Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River, Southeastern China

Abstract:February–April drought strongly affects agriculture and socio-economics in southeastern China, yet its long-term variability has not been assessed due to the shortness of instrumental records. In this study, we reported a 168-year tree-ring width chronology from a steep, low-elevation site with thin soil layers in the Xianxia Mountains, southeastern China. Contrary to the existing chronologies that are mostly temperature sensitive, this chronology contained a strong February–April precipitation signal, indicating great potential for tree-ring based precipitation reconstructions in southeastern China. The reconstruction explained 47.8% of the instrumental variance during 1951–2012. The full reconstruction indicated that there were 3 dry periods (1873–1896, 1924–1971, 1995–2012) and 2 wet periods (1856–1872, 1972–1994) during 1856–2013. The extreme drought in 2011 was not unprecedented for the past 168years, and the recent severe droughts may be part of interdecadal variations in regional February–April precipitation. Our results also suggested that February–April precipitation in southeastern China was highly influenced by the tropical Pacific climate system, in particular El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
Weakening of the Summer Monsoon over the Past 150 Years Shown by a Tree‐Ring Record from Shandong, Eastern China, and the Potential Role of North Atlantic Climate

Abstract:The causes of the decreased intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) over the past 150 years are still not fully understood, although several studies have linked the monsoon weakening to the warming of tropical oceans. Here, we use pine tree-rings to reconstruct the precipitation total for April-August from 1810 to 2018, in south-central Shandong Province, in the EASM region. The reconstruction accounts for 41.8% of the instrumental precipitation variance during 1965-2018. The EASM precipitation reconstruction shows extreme pluvial conditions in 1832, 1833, 1886, and 1998, and extreme droughts in 1878, 1901, and 1910, which correspond precisely to extreme climatic events recorded in historical documents. The reconstructed precipitation reveals a drying trend since the 1870s, which matches well with the decreasing trend of the EASM inferred from stalagmite oxygen isotope (delta O-18) records and climate simulations. The trend of decreasing precipitation since the 1870s, indicated by our reconstruction, is significantly correlated with the spring sea surface temperature (SST) of the North Atlantic Ocean, which suggests that the EASM weakening was linked to North Atlantic SST variations during the past 150 years. This potential role of North Atlantic SST variability is supported by climate sensitivity simulations of the Community Earth System Model. North Atlantic SST variability induces two teleconnections of Rossby-like wave propagation from the North Atlantic into East Asia, resulting in anomalous precipitation in this region.

Abstract:Atmospheric circulation changes, their driving mechanisms, and interactions are important topics in global change research. Local changes in the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and the midlatitude westerlies will inevitably affect the climate and ecology of the arid zone of northwestern China. Hence, it is important to study these regional changes. While previous studies in this area are all single-point climate reconstruction studies, there is a lack of research on the interaction areas and driving mechanisms of the two major circulations. Dendroclimatology can provide high-resolution, long-term, and reliable multi-point proxies for the study of interannual and interdecadal climate change. We chose to observe these changes in the Alxa Plateau using dendrochronological methods. We assembled ring-width records of Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) in the mountain regions surrounding the Alxa Plateau: the Helan Mountains, Changling Mountain, and Dongda Mountain. The results show that radial growth was indeed affected by changes in the monsoon and westerlies. The heterogeneity of precipitation and climatic wet-dry changes in different regions is primarily influenced by the interactions between atmospheric circulation systems, each with its own dominant controlling factors. In the case of the Helan Mountains, both of these major atmospheric circulation systems play a significant role in shaping climate changes. Changling Mountain in the southern part of the Alxa Plateau is mainly influenced by the EASM. Dongda Mountain is mainly influenced by the westerlies. Understanding these local conditions will help us predict climate changes in northwestern China.
