Abstract:The current study aimed at designing cationic and biodegradable biomaterials with improved biological functionality. We report the enzymatic synthesis, characterization and preliminary biological assessment of a series of novel functionalized poly(ester-co-carbonate)s, namely [poly(ADMC-co-CL)]s containing tertiary amine groups in the backbone. The copolymer compositions agreed very well with the feed ratios of co-monomers, indicating the excellent controllability of the preparation method. Static contact angle measurement revealed that the hydrophilicity of copolymers can be tailored and gradually increased with an increasing ADMC content in copolymers. With respect to the weight loss, in vitro degradation tests demonstrated the occurrence of lipase-dependent degradation. Copolymers with a higher ADMC content degraded far faster as well. Cell proliferation tests suggested that the incorporation of ADMC in copolymers would considerably promote cell adhesion and proliferation on the polymer surface, indicative of good biocompatibility. As a demonstration of a potential application, poly(ADMC-co-CL) microspheres were fabricated in an attempt to construct a controlled delivery system for the drug ibuprofen. The sustained release of ibuprofen loaded in the copolymers was found to have an evident acceleration in acidic conditions, indicating the pH dependence of such release behavior.

Abstract:The catechol plays a variety of important roles in biological processes, prompting researchers to include them in the design of biomimetic biomedical materials. The low molecular weight and good water solubility of the catechol group (or its derivatives) make it a good candidate for functionalizing biomaterials that can be typically achieved by grafting it onto a polymer chain. To fully harness the powerful capabilities of catechols, one can think beyond grafting to linear polymer chains, towards hyperbranched polymers, wherein at least one of the branches comprises at least one catechol moiety. In recent years, a number of approaches have been developed to synthesize multifunctional hyperbranched polymers with catechol functionalities for bioadhesives and surface coatings. This review article focuses on the main synthetic approaches applied for introducing the important and versatile catechol building blocks within the (hyper)branched structure polymers. In addition, the applications of these polymers in biomedical fields are highlighted as well.

Abstract:Poly(amino acid)s have been extensively studied in biomedical applications,due to their excellent biocompatibility,biodegradability and various side groups for further functionalization.Poly(aspartic acid)can be synthesized by thermal polycondensation of L-aspartic acid,which is easily controlled and not costly.Its metabolites are non-toxic and would not produce toxic side effects to the surrounding tissue,liver,kidney,and red blood cells.It would be agood candidate for preparing polypeptide derivatives and was widely studied as the drug carriers,tissue engineering materials,etc.In this paper,research on poly(aspartic acid)s in the field of biomedical materials in recent years was reviewed,and mainly focused on the design and synthesis of poly(alpha,beta-L-aspartic acid)derivatives and their biomedical properties.

Abstract:Hydroxamic acid compounds,which contain the functional groups of hydroxyl oximido with high coordination activity,can chelate with metal ions to form a stable ring and have extensive applied values. It is a very reactive chelating agent. The structure characteristics and chemical properties of hydroxamic acid compounds were introduced. The synthesis methods of hydroxamic acid and hydroxamic acid polymer were reviewed,with emphasis on hydroxylamine method. The updated progresses of their application were also reviewed in the fields of medicine,flotation and metallurgy and the function mechanism of hydroxamic acid on mineral surface to flotation is recommended In order to broaden the scope of its application in less new product,high production costs and low toxicity in the process of preparation should be paid more attention. New product,high efficiency,green industry should be the direction of preparation of hydroxamic acid.

Abstract:Poly-L-lysine (PLL) is a water-soluble biopolymer consist of repeating unit of L-lysine. It displays intrinsic non-antigenicity, antibacterial property, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, and facile synthesis procedure, therefore has attracted particular attention in various biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. Following a brief introduction to PLL synthesis, this review focuses on the significant advances of PLL and PLL-derived complexes utilized in cargo delivery, tissue adhesives, and antibacterial materials. Meanwhile, this review summarized the modification and optimization of PLL complexes for further clinical translational studies. The final section discusses the challenges and opportunities of PLL-based complexes in the biomedical areas.

Abstract:Biodegradable polymers have been widely used and have greatly promoted the development of biomedical fields because of their biocompatibility and biodegradability. The development of biotechnology and medical technology has set higher requirements for biomedical materials. Novel biodegradable polymers with specific properties are in great demand. Biodegradable polymers can be classified as natural or synthetic polymers according to the source. Synthetic biodegradable polymers have found more versatile and diverse biomedical applications owing to their tailorable designs or modifications. This review presents a comprehensive introduction to various types of synthetic biodegradable polymers with reactive groups and bioactive groups, and further describes their structure, preparation procedures and properties. The focus is on advances in the past decade in functionalization and responsive strategies of biodegradable polymers and their biomedical applications. The possible future developments of the materials are also discussed.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid materials like bone, shells, and teeth can be found in nature, which are usually composed of biomacromolecules and nanoscale inorganic ingredients. Synergy of organic-inorganic components in hybrid materials render them outstanding and versatile performance. Chitosan is commonly used organic materials in bionic hybrid materials since its bioactive properties and could be controllable tailored by various means to meet complex conditions in different applications. Among these fabrication means, hybridization was favored for its convenience and efficiency. This review discusses three kinds of chitosan-based hybrid materials: hybridized with hydroxyapatite, calcium carbonate, and clay respectively, which are the representative of phosphate, carbonate, and hydrous aluminosilicates. Here, we reported the latest developments of the preparation methods, composition, structure and applications of these bioactive hybrid materials, especially in the biomedical field. Despite the great progress was made in bioactive organic-inorganic hybrid materials based on chitosan, some challenges and specific directions are still proposed for future development in this review.

Abstract:Biocompatible or biodegradable hyperbranched polymers (HBPs), an important subclass of hyperbranched macromolecules, have recently received increasing attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties as well as their great advantages in therapeutic applications. This review highlights recent advances and future trends in the preparation and applications of biocompatible or biodegradable HBPs for therapeutic purpose. Various biocompatible or biodegradable hyperbranched structures can be obtained by means of step-growth polycondensation (SGP), self-condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP), self-condensing ring-opening polymerization (SCROP), and so forth. The properties of biocompatible or biodegradable HBPs can be tailored for a specialized purpose through terminal modification, backbone modification, or hybrid modification. Special emphasis is then placed on their diagnostic, therapeutic delivery and theranostic applications. Finally, future directions and perspectives in this emerging field are briefly discussed. These developments on the synthesis and therapeutic applications of biocompatible or biodegradable HBPs promote interdisciplinary research spanning polymer materials and biomedical sciences.

Abstract:Abstract Organic polymer coatings have been commonly used in biomedical field, which play an important role in achieving biological antifouling, drug delivery, and bacteriostasis. With the continuous development of polymer science, organic polymer coatings can be designed with complex and advanced functions, which is conducive to the construction of biomedical materials with different performances. According to different physical and chemical properties of materials, biomedical organic polymer coating materials are classified into zwitterionic polymers, non-ionic polymers, and biomacromolecules. The strategies of combining coatings with substrates include physical adsorption, chemical grafting, and self-adhesion. Though the coating materials and construction methods are different, many biomedical polymer coatings have been developed to achieve excellent performances, i.e., enhanced lubrication, anti-inflammation, antifouling, antibacterial, drug release, anti-encrustation, anti-thrombosis, etc. Consequently, a large number of biomedical polymer coatings have been used in artificial lungs, ureteral stent, vascular flow diverter, and artificial joints. In this review, we summarize different types, properties, construction methods, biological functions, and clinical applications of biomedical organic polymer coatings, and prospect future direction for development of organic polymer coatings in biomedical field. It is anticipated that this review can be useful for the design and synthesis of functional organic polymer coatings with various biomedical purposes.

Abstract:Chitosan, a natural and abundant polysaccharide, offers several advantageous properties, such as excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antimicrobial activity, making it a highly versatile material. However, its extensive application is hindered by its insolubility in water and most organic solvents, due to numerous intramolecular/intermolecular hydrogen bonds. To overcome this limitation and optimize its benefits, chitosan is often chemically modified to enhances its utility in various industries. Biomedical materials, environmental management, biological papermaking, food preservation, and the daily chemical industry are a few examples. Modified chitosan retains the inherent properties of chitosan and acquires new physicochemical characteristics as a result of introduced functional groups. Hydrophilic modifications typically include carboxylation, phosphorylation, and quaternary ammonium modification reactions. The specific properties and applications of chitosan derivatives depend on the grafted groups. This review summarizes the reaction conditions, properties, and applications of hydrophilic chitosan derivatives in drug delivery and food preservation, serving as a reference for the development and use of chitosan-based biomaterials. Abstract:Abstract In recent years, synthetic and semi-synthetic polymer materials have been widely used in various applications. Especially concerning biomedical applications, their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity have increased the interest of researchers to discover and develop new products for the well-being of humanity. Among the synthetic and semi-synthetic materials, the use of natural bio-based monomeric materials presents a possible novel avenue for the development of new biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic products. The purpose of this article is to review the information on the role of natural bio-based monomers in biomedical applications. Increased eco-friendliness, biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and intrinsic biological activity are some of the attributes which make itaconic, succinic, citric, hyaluronic, and glutamic acids suitable potential materials for biomedical applications. Herein, we summarize the most recent advances in the field over the past ten years and specifically highlight new and interesting discoveries in biomedical applications. Abstract:Recent advancements in bioengineering and medical devices have been greatly influenced and dominated by synthetic polymers, particularly polyurethanes (PUs). PUs offer customizable mechanical properties and long‐term stability, but their inherent hydrophobic nature poses challenges in practically biological application processes, such as interface high friction, strong protein adsorption, and thrombosis. To address these issues, surface modifications of PUs for generating functionally hydrophilic layers have received widespread attention, but the durability of generated surface functionality is poor due to irreversible mechanical wear or biodegradation. As a result, numerous researchers have investigated bulk modification techniques to incorporate zwitterionic polymers or groups onto the main or side chains of PUs, thereby improving their hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. This comprehensive review presents an extensive overview of notable zwitterionic PUs (ZPUs), including those based on phosphorylcholine (PC), sulfobetaine (SB), and carboxybetaine (CB). The review explores their wide range of biomedical applications, from blood‐contacting devices to antibacterial coatings, fouling‐resistant marine coatings, separation membranes, lubricated surfaces, and shape memory and self‐healing materials. Abstract:Application of PAMAM functional biomedical materials in the field of biomedicine. Over the past decade, significant advancements have been achieved in the field of biomedicine, particularly in the treatment of critical illness. However, there remain numerous challenges and barriers persist in drug delivery, medical imaging, diagnosis, and treatment. Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers have emerged as promising candidates for the development of functional biomedical materials due to their advantageous properties, including ease of preparation, controllable size, abundant cavities, water solubility, modifiability, and biocompatibility. This article presents a comprehensive review of the synthesis, application, and potential toxicity of PAMAM functional biomedical materials, exploring the role, significance, and potential applications of PAMAM dendrimers in detail. The aim is to provide a valuable reference for the future development of biomedical materials and to inspire further discoveries in the field of polyamide functional materials.

Abstract:Hydrogels is a hydrophilic, cross-linked polymer of three-dimensional network structures. The application of hydrogels prepared from a single polymer in the biomedical field has many drawbacks. The functional blend of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan allows hydrogels to have better and more desirable properties than those produced from a single polymer, which is a good biomaterial for development and design. In this paper, we have reviewed the progress in the application of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan composite hydrogels in various medical fields, the different cross-linking agents and cross-linking methods, and the research progress in the optimization of composite hydrogels for their subsequent wide range of biomedical applications.

Abstract:Because of the unique chemical structure, chitosan and its derivatives have been paid close extensive attention as the potential bio-functional material. This review presents recent synthesis of modified chitosan via N-substitution, O-substitution, free radical graft copolymerization and other modification methods and properties of the modified chitosan. The applications of the modified chitosan in metal ions adsorption, dye removal and pharmaceutical fields are illustrated as well. The rapid development in the modification of chitosan describes broad perspectives of the modified chitosan.

By an elegant combination of dynamic/reversible structures with exceptional functions, functional supramolecular polymers are attracting increasing attention in various fields. In particular, functional supramolecular polymers offer several unique advantages, including inherent degradable polymer backbones, smart responsiveness to various biological stimuli, and the ease for the incorporation of multiple biofunctionalities (e.g., targeting and bioactivity), thereby showing great potential for a wide range of applications in the biomedical field. In this Review, the trends and representative achievements in the design and synthesis of supramolecular polymers with specific functions are summarized, as well as their wide‐ranging biomedical applications such as drug delivery, gene transfection, protein delivery, bioimaging and diagnosis, tissue engineering, and biomimetic chemistry. These achievements further inspire persistent efforts in an emerging interdisciplinary research area of supramolecular chemistry, polymer science, material science, biomedical engineering, and nanotechnology.

Abstract:This review paper summarizes the latest advancements in the synthesis, characterization, and applications of functionalized nanoporous heteropoly acids. It highlights their unique properties, advantages, and potential in various industries, as well as the challenges and future directions in their development. Functionalized nanoporous heteropoly acids (HPAs) have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their enhanced surface area and porosity, as well as their potential for low‐cost regeneration compared to bulk materials. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advancements in the synthesis and applications of functionalized HPAs. We begin by introducing the fundamental properties of HPAs and their unique structure, followed by a comprehensive overview of the various approaches employed for the synthesis of functionalized HPAs, including salts, anchoring onto supports, and implementing mesoporous silica sieves. The potential applications of functionalized HPAs in various fields are also discussed, highlighting their boosted performance in a wide range of applications. Finally, we address the current challenges and present future prospects in the development of functionalized HPAs, particularly in the context of mesoporous HPAs. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the recent progress in the field, highlighting the significant advancements made in the synthesis and applications of functionalized HPAs.

Abstract:Poly((meth)acrylic add) (P(M)AA) brushes possess a number Of distinctive properties that are particularly attractive for biomedical applications. This minireview summarizes recent advances in the synthesis and biomedical applications of P(M)AA brushes and brushes containing P(M)AA segments. First, we review different surface-initiated polymerization (SIP) methods, with a focus on recent progress Cell in the surface-initiated controlled/living radical polymerization (SI-CLRP) techniques used to generate P(M)AA brushes with a tailored structure. Next, we discuss biomolecule immobilization methods for P(M)AA brushes, including physical adsorption, covalent binding, and affinity interactions. Finally, typical biomedical applications of P(M)AA brushes are reviewed, and their performance is discussed based on their unique properties. We conclude that P(M)AA brushes are promising biomaterials, and more potential biomedical applications are expected to emerge with the further development of synthetic techniques and increased understanding of their interactions with biological systems.
