Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:Cross-metathesis (CM), a carbon-carbon bond transformation that features exceptional selectivity, reactivity and tolerance to functionalities, has been extensively investigated in organic chemistry. On the other hand, the use of CM in polymer synthesis is also growing in both scope and breadth, thus offering a wealth of opportunities for introducing a vast range of functionalities into polymer backbone so as to manipulate properties and expand applications. In this review, we propose the concept of “cross-metathesis polymerization” (CMP) referring to polymer synthesis via repetitive CM reaction and summarize emerging strategies for the precision synthesis of aliphatic polyesters via CMP based on the high CM tendency between acrylates and α- olefins. Due to the carbon-carbon bond-forming step-growth polymerization nature, CMP brings a new concept to polyester synthesis. This remarkable polymerization method possesses unique advantages such as mild condition, full conversion, fast kinetics, almost quantitative yield and extraordinary tolerance to functionalities. In particular, CMP provides the ability to regulate macromolecular architectures including linear, block, cyclic, star, graft, dendron, hyperbranched and dendrimer topologies. Ultimately, advanced polymeric materials with outstanding performances can be facially constructed based on these sophisticated macromolecular architectures.

Abstract:Polyolefins attract considerable attention due to their vast consumption and wide application. In this study, cross-metathesis polymerization (CMP) is demonstrated to be an efficient and feasible method for the synthesis of aliphatic polyketones. The synthetic route features good yield, mild condition and easy operation. The success of CMP relies on the high cross-metathesis tendency between a-olefin and vinyl ketone units of monomer 2. Optimization of polymerization condition was conducted to generate unsaturated polyketone P0 (M-n, GPC = 14 kDa), and the results of kinetic study verified high efficiency and structural integrity of this system. Furthermore, post-polymerization modification of P0 by using thiol-Michael chemistry furnished functional polyketones P1-P6, and full conversion of the internal vinyl ketone groups of P0 was observed in each case. The pristine and functional polyketones P0-P6 were virtually soluble in most common organic solvents. In particular, hydrophobic and fluorescent polyketones (P5 and P6) were also obtained by this means. Therefore, this synthetic strategy shows promising future and exemplifies huge potential for the synthesis of a diverse range of functional polyketones.

Abstract:The construction of complex polymer architectures with well-defined topology, composition and functionality has been extensively explored as the molecular basis for the development of modern polymer materials. The unique reaction kinetics of free-radical polymerization leads to the concurrent formation of crosslinks between polymer chains and rings within an individual chain and, thus, free-radical (co)polymerization of multivinyl monomers provides a facile method to manipulate chain topology and functionality. Regulating the relative contribution of these intermolecular and intramolecular chain-propagation reactions is the key to the construction of architecturally complex polymers. This can be achieved through the design of new monomers or by spatially or kinetically controlling crosslinking reactions. These mechanisms enable the synthesis of various polymer architectures, including linear, cyclized, branched and star polymer chains, as well as crosslinked networks. In this Review, we highlight some of the contemporary experimental strategies to prepare complex polymer architectures using radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers. We also examine the recent development of characterization techniques for sub-chain connections in such complex macromolecules. Finally, we discuss how these crosslinking reactions have been engineered to generate advanced polymer materials for use in a variety of biomedical applications.

Abstract:Click chemistry refers to the type of chemical reactions that occur between specific pairs of reagents, taking place under mild conditions with high stereoselectivity. These characteristics help chemists to construct very complex molecules in a relatively easy, quick, and precise manner. Polymers are widely used in daily life which are composed of repeating monomers. They can be designed and synthesized to meet certain characteristics to apply in real life. Click chemistry plays an essential role in creating new polymers, including modifying them afterwards. This paper introduces three typical click chemistry reactions in polymer synthesis and modifications, which include Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), thiol-ene reaction, and Diels-Alder reaction. They all have positive impact in synthesizing and modifying polymer. CuAAC reaction is applied to make desired polymer with crosslinking structure or other desired protein structure and modify the product by introducing new functional groups. Thiol-ene reaction makes good use in producing adhesives, including light-curing adhesive and bio-based adhesive, as well as surface modification. Diels-Alder reaction provides new insights in the synthesized polymers. At last, double click chemistry, which is still at the stage of preliminary exploration, contributes to creating complex polymers. The use of click chemistry in polymers is powerful and useful, leading the development of advanced materials and upgrading synthesizing skills.

Abstract:Olefin metathesis, as a powerful metal-catalysed carbon–carbon bond-forming method, has achieved considerable progress in recent years. However, the complexity originating from multicomponent interactions has long impeded a complete mechanistic understanding of olefin metathesis, which hampers further optimization of the reaction. Here, we clarify both productive and hidden degenerate pathways of ring-closing metathesis by focusing on one individual catalyst, using a sensitive single-molecule electrical detection platform. In addition to visualizing the full pathway, we found that the conventionally unwanted degenerate pathways have an unexpected constructive coupling effect on the productive pathway, and both types of pathway can be regulated by an external electric field. We then pushed forward this ability to ring-opening metathesis polymerization involving more interactive components. With single-monomer-insertion-event resolution, precise on-device synthesis of a single polymer was achieved by online manipulation of monomer insertion dynamics, intramolecular chain transfer, stereoregularity, degree of polymerization and block copolymerization. These results offer a comprehensive mechanistic understanding of olefin metathesis, exemplifying infinite opportunities for practical precise manufacturing.

Abstract:Most metathesis polymers based on norbornene derivatives carry a vinyl end group. Here we show that these vinyl end groups readily undergo a degenerative exchange of the terminal methylene unit in the presence of sub-stoichiometric amounts of a propagating metathesis polymer carrying a Grubbs ruthenium complex. We show that this degenerative exchange can be exploited in synthesizing ROMP polymers in a catalytic living fashion. Chain transfer agents based on styrene, or monosubstituted conjugated 1,3 diene derivatives are used as initiating sites for the catalytic living polymerization. Suitable derivatives of these chain transfer agents not only allow the linear living growth of polymers but also the synthesis of block copolymers from macro-initiators or star polymers from multi-functional chain transfer agents. This reversible exchange mechanism offers a cheaper, greener, and more sustainable alternative for the synthesis of living ROMP polymers compared to the classical synthetic route.

Abstract:Current research optimizes metal‐catalyzed synthesis of well‐defined polymers with distinct end groups, serving as fundamental building blocks for functional materials. Investigations combine coordination polymerization with rare‐earth metal complexes and C–H bond activation via σ‐bond metathesis, allowing precise control over end‐group functionalities. This perspective underscores the strategy's significance in advancing metalorganic and polymer chemistry, addressing principles, challenges, and potential advancements. Polymers with well‐defined structures, synthesized through metal‐catalyzed processes, and having end groups exhibiting different polarity and reactivity than the backbone, are gaining considerable attention in both scientific and industrial communities. These polymers show potential applications as fundamental building blocks and additives in the creation of innovative functional materials. Investigations are directed toward identifying the most optimal and uncomplicated synthetic approach by employing a combination of living coordination polymerization mediated by rare‐earth metal complexes and C–H bond activation reaction by σ‐bond metathesis. This combination directly yields catalysts with diverse functional groups from a single precursor, enabling the production of terminal‐functionalized polymers without the need for sequential reactions, such as termination reactions. The utilization of this innovative methodology allows for precise control over end‐group functionalities, providing a versatile approach to tailor the properties and applications of the resulting polymers. This perspective discusses the principles, challenges, and potential advancements associated with this synthetic strategy, highlighting its significance in advancing the interface of metalorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and materials science.

Abstract:Abstract Click reactions, with remarkable merits including high efficiency, atom economy, mild reaction conditions, good functionality tolerance, simple isolation process, and regio‐ and/or stereoselectivity, have drawn intense attention of polymer chemists and found widespread applications in polymer synthesis. Besides the famous Cu(I)‐catalyzed azide–alkyne click reaction, plentiful click reactions, such as Diels–Alder, thiol‐based, nonaldol carbonyl, amino‐yne, hydroxyl–yne, and sulfur(VI) fluoride‐exchange click reactions, have also been introduced into the field of polymer chemistry. With these efficient click reactions in hand, diverse functional groups can be readily incorporated into polymer chains to endow them with desired functionalities. Copolymers with complex structures, such as block, graft, star, and cyclic polymers, can be synthesized using click reaction as polymer conjugation method. These click reactions have also been developed into facile polymerization techniques, that is, click polymerization, for the direct synthesis of linear, hyperbranched, and cross‐linked polymers with various properties. This article intends to give a brief summary of click reactions applied in polymer synthesis, including preparation of polymers and postpolymerization modification of preformed polymers.

Abstract:A feasibility study for the synthesis of well-defined miktoarm star polymers containing peptide arms in an automated parallel synthesizer is reported. A series of linear homo- and block (co-)polymers were prepared in the presence of commercial or peptide-functionalized reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents. Thereafter, miktoarm star polymers were obtained by cross-linking different combinations of the abovementioned linear polymers using N, N'-bis(acryloyl)cystamine (BAC) as a redox responsive cross-linker. The described automated synthesis can be regarded as a proof-of-principle technique that next to emerging automated polymer purification and machine learning approaches could be useful to potentiate the development of autonomous methods for accessing systematic and comprehensive (peptide-)functionalized star polymer libraries. With these approaches hundreds of candidates of these complex polymer architectures could be rapidly synthesized, screened and optimized for different applications.

Abstract:Olefin metathesis has revolutionized synthetic approaches to carbon-carbon bond formation. With a rich history beginning in industrial settings through its advancement in academic laboratories leading to new and highly active metathesis catalysts, olefin metathesis has found use in the generation of complex natural products, the cyclization of bioactive materials, and in the polymerization of new and unique polymer architectures. Throughout this review, we will trace the deployment of olefin metathesis-based strategies for the modification of proteins, a process which has been facilitated by the extensive development of stable, isolable, and highly active transition-metal-based metathesis catalysts. We first begin by summarizing early works which detail peptide modification strategies that played a vital role in identifying stable metathesis catalysts. We then delve into protein modification using cross metathesis and finish with recent work on the generation of protein-polymer conjugates through ring-opening metathesis polymerization.

Abstract:The synthesis of artificial sequence-defined polymers that match and extend the functionality of proteins is an important goal in materials science. One way of achieving this is to program a sequence of chemical reactions between precursor building blocks by means of attached oligonucleotide adapters. However, hydrolysis of the reactive building blocks has so far limited the length and yield of product that can be obtained using DNA-templated reactions. Here, we report an architecture for DNA-templated synthesis in which reactants are tethered at internal abasic sites on opposite strands of a DNA duplex. We show that an abasic site within a DNA duplex can protect a nearby thioester from degradation, significantly increasing the yield of a DNA-templated reaction. This protective effect has the potential to overcome the challenges associated with programmable sequence-controlled synthesis of long non-natural polymers by extending the lifetime of the reactive building blocks.
