Abstract:The total-Routhian-surface (TRS) calculation provides a powerful theoretical tool to describe the collective rotations of nuclei. It gives a straightforward way to determine nuclear deformation which can change with increasing rotational frequency. In most cases, however, TRS calculations with a conventional pairing approach (e. g., Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing) encounter a nonconvergence problem when applied to sidebands which are built on broken-pair excited intrinsic configurations. To overcome this problem, we have developed the TRS calculations with a particle-number-conserving pairing method in which the pairing correlation is treated with the merit of the shell model. In this paper, we present the first results of the calculations, focusing on the sidebands of the W-178 nucleus, investigating deformation changes and incurred effects on the rotational behaviors of sidebands. Stability and electronic spectroscopy of isomers for C74Si2

Abstract:Equilibrium structures and relative stabilities of possible lower-energy isomers for C74Si2 base on C76(D2) were studied using semi-empirical INDO series of methods. Full optimization indicated that the most stable geometry was 39,60-C74Si2 where two silicon atoms were immediate neighbors and located at the bond between a five- and a six-membered rings near the longest C2(Z) axis of C76 and was less stable than C76. Fixing one Si atom, the other Si atom was used to substitute different carbon atoms with different Y Cartesian coordinates. It was found that total energy was related to Y coordinate values and became higher when two Si atoms were separated from each other. Based on the optimized geometries, the electronic spectroscopy of C74Si2 was investigated with the INDO/CIS method and long-waved absorption peaks appeared in the NIR region. The electronic transition and red-shift of absorptions of C74Si2 compared with that of C76 were discussed.

Abstract:Using the pairing-deformation-frequency self-consistent total-Routhiansurface and configuration-constrained potential-energy-surface calculations, we have studied nuclear deformation and its effect on the structure of nuclei. It was found that the high-order multipolarity-six (β6) deformation plays a significant role in superheavy nuclei. Possible non-collective highspin isomeric states which locate in the second well of actinide nuclei have been investigated with the predictions of excitation energies and configurations. High-spin isomers can extend shape coexistence in A ∼ 190 neutrondeficient nuclei. Triaxiality with γ 30 is found in the ground and excited rotational states of the A ∼ 70 germanium isotopes. Octupole correlations have also been discussed in different mass regions. In recent experiments, the textbook nucleus 158Er has been reached at ultrahigh spins around 65∼. We have studied 158Er ultrahigh-spin states by means of the self-consistent tilted-axis-cranking method based on the Nilsson shell correction and the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model. The calculation with a ≈ 12 ° triaxialstrongly-deformed (TSD) excited configuration can well reproduce the observed large transitional quadrupole moment. It is demonstrated that the TSD minimum at negative γdeformation which appears in the principalaxis-cranking approach is a saddle point if allowing the rotational axis to change direction.

Abstract:Nuclear shape change and shape coexistence in the Selenium isotopes have been investigated by Total-Routhian-Surface(TRS) calculations. It is found that nuclear shapes vary significantly with increasing neutron number. The TRS calculations for the ground states of 66, 72, 92, 94Se isotopes show that both neutron-deficient and neutron-dripline Selenium isotopes have oblate and prolate shape coexistence. The cranking shell-model calculations for 72, 94Se give that prolate and oblate shape coexistence in low rotational frequency. However, oblate rotational bands disappear and prolate rotational bands become yrast bands with increasing rotational frequency, which is due to the intrusion of the g9/2 orbitals.

Abstract:Since the cranking shell model was established, it has been well developed with several key landmarks. The model has been one of the most successful models which describe the collective rotation of nuclei. Two key developments are: (1) the inclusion of pairing interaction; (2) total-Routhian-surface (TRS) calculations. Such calculations can give nuclear structure information about shape evolution with increasing rotational frequency and rotational alignments of paired nucleons. We have made significant developments based on the cranking shell model: (1) developed pairing-deformationfrequency self-consistent TRS calculations; (2) developed configuration-constrained potential-energy-surface (PES) calculations which can calculate for any excited configurations in a self-consistent way; (3) developed configuration-constrained total-Routhian-surface (TRS) calculations, achieving the self-consistent calculations of rotational motions of any excited configurations.

Abstract:Total-Routhian-Surface calculations have been performed to investigate the shape evolutions of $A\sim80$ nuclei, $^{80-84}$Zr, $^{76-80}$Sr and $^{84,86}$Mo. Shape coexistences of spherical, prolate and oblate deformations have been found in these nuclei. Particularly for the nuclei, $^{80}$Sr and $^{82}$Zr, the energy differences between two shape-coexisting states are less than 220 keV. At high spins, the $g_{9/2}$ shell plays an important role for shape evolutions. It has been found that the alignment of the $g_{9/2}$ quasi-particles drives nuclei to be triaxial.

Abstract:The triaxial deformations of candidate nuclei of the chiral doublets bands in A - 100 mass region are investigated in a microscopic and self-consistent triaxial relativistic mean field (RMF) approach. The convergence of results is examined. Based on the constraint RMF calculation with effective interaction PK1, the deformations of ground state in Rh, Ag and In isotopes have been obtained. Large triaxial deformation necessary for chiral doublets band is predicted in several nuclei.

Abstract:In this article, we have reviewed our theoretical studies of collective rotations of high- K isomers in deformed nuclei. As one of methods which we have developed, the configuration-constrained total Routhian surface (CCTRS) based on a macroscopic–microscopic model has been found to be a powerful theoretical tool to describe isomers and their collective rotations. The CCTRS calculation provides a straightforward self-consistent way to determine the deformation which can change with increasing the collective rotational frequency and/or seniority of the state. To overcome the pairing collapse of numerical calculations encountered in the conventional pairing approach (e.g., BCS or Bogoliubov pairing) due to weakened pairings with unpaired nucleons in isomeric states, we have developed the CCTRS method using the particle-number-conserved (PNC) pairing approach in which the pairing is treated with the methodology of the many-body shell model. The CCTRS is calculated in a deformation lattice with the deformation parameters ( , , ). It is important that one should constrain the specific configuration in the CCTRS calculation, which has been achieved using the average Nilsson numbers to identify and track the single-particle orbitals specified in the intrinsic configuration of the isomer. With the CCTRS method, we have investigated many isomeric states and their rotational bands. As examples, we show in this review the calculations of collective rotational bands of isomers in rare-earth nuclei where rich data have been available. Furthermore, we have also developed a full microscopic configuration-constrained cranking model based on the Skyrme Hartree–Fock approach. Similar to the macroscopic–microscopic CCTRS, the pairing is treated by the PNC method to avoid the pairing collapse in pairing numerical calculations. As example, we show in this review the calculations of the rotational bands of W isomers.

Abstract:The deformation in rhodium isotopes is investigated using adiabatic and configuration-fixed constrained triaxial relativistic mean field (RMF) approaches. The triaxial deformations are found in the ground states of Rh-102,Rh-104,Rh-106,Rh-108,Rh-110, which is consistent with triaxial Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculations. Several minima with triaxial deformation in Rh-104,Rh-106,Rh-108,Rh-110 are obtained by the configuration-fixed constrained calculations. The corresponding configurations are characterized by the quantum numbers vertical bar nljm > obtained by transforming wave functions from a Cartesian basis to a spherical basis. The possible existence of multiple chiral doublets (M chi D) is demonstrated in Rh-104,Rh-106,Rh-108,Rh-110 isotopes, based on different particle-hole configurations and triaxial deformations.

Abstract:Octupole properties in even–even 220–230U isotopes have been investigated using improved total Routhian surface calculations with the inclusion of reflection-asymmetric deformations. We pay attention to the evolution of octupole properties with increasing nucleon and rotational frequency. 222U is predicted to have static octupole deformation up to high spins. A shape transition from reflection-symmetry to reflection-asymmetry happens across 22892U136 with decreasing neutron number in uranium isotopes or decreasing proton number in N = 136 isotones. Our calculations were compared with previous calculations and available experiments.

Abstract:Pairing-deformation-frequency self-consistent crankingWoods-Saxon model is employed to investigate the triaxiality in the ground states of the neutron-rich even-even Mo, Ru isotopes. Deformation evolutions and transition probabilities have been studied, giving the triaxial shapes in their ground states. The kinematic moments of inertia have been calculated to illustrate the gradually rigid deformation. To understand the origin of the asymmetry shape in this region, we analyze the evolution of single-particle orbits with changing γ deformation. The present calculations reveal the importance of the triaxial deformation in describing not only static property, but also rotational behaviors in this mass region, providing significant probes into the shell structure around.

Abstract:Motivated by new experimental spectra in transfermium mass region, we have investigated broken-pair high-K multiparticle excited states and their rotational bands for the N = 150 isotones around Z = 100, by using the configuration-constrained pairing-deformation-frequency self-consistent total-Routhian-surface (TRS) model. In order to avoid the spurious phase transition encountered in the Bardeen-Copper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing, the particle-number-conserving method has been employed for pairing calculations. Pairing correlations are remarkably reduced for the rotations of broken-pair multiparticle states. The present configuration-constrained TRS calculations reproduce reasonably existing experimental data. The abnormal feature in the recently observed K-pi = 8(-)bands of No-252 and Fm-250 would be associated with configuration mixing.

Abstract:Using the total-Routhian-surface (TRS) method, the rotational behaviors of fission isomers in the second well of actinide nuclei 234–242U, 236–244Pu and 238–246Cm were investigated. The pairing-deformation-frequency self-consistent TRS calculations reproduced reasonably the experimental moments of inertia extracted from spectroscopic data. It is calculated that, in these largelyelongated (β 2 ≈ 0.65 and β 4 ≈ 0.03) fission isomers, the $v\tfrac{1}{2}^ - [981]$ neutron and $\pi \tfrac{1}{2}^ + [651]$ proton align simultaneously at rotational frequency ħω ≈ 0.4–0.6 MeV (corresponding to spin I ≈ 80ħ), which leads to clear upbending in moments of inertia (MoI’s). Our calculations have indicated that the hexadecapole deformation β 4 influenced significantly the frequency of the rotational alignment of the proton $\tfrac{1}{2}^ + [651]$ orbit.

Abstract:Background: In the selenium isotopes various shape phenomena are present, in particular, the emergence of a dominant oblate deformation in the most neutron-deficient isotopes has been observed. The scenario of shape coexisting oblate and prolate bands has been proposed across the isotopic chain, with the crossing point of such bands being located near Se70 , where no coexistence has yet been identified. Purpose: To determine the presence or absence of any low-lying 0+ state in Se70 , confirm the level structure, and interpret the nuclear deformation with theoretical models. Methods: A combined internal-conversion-electron and γ -ray spectroscopy study was undertaken with the SPICE and TIGRESS spectrometers at the TRIUMF-ISAC-II facility. Nuclear models were provided by the generalized triaxial rotor model (GTRM) and the collective generalised Bohr Hamiltonian (GBH). Results: Despite a comprehensive search, no evidence was found for the existence of a 0+ state below 2 MeV in Se70 . Significant discrepancies to the previously established positive-parity-level scheme were found. GBH calculations using UNEDF1 mass parameters were found to reproduce the revised low-lying level structure well. Conclusion: Se70 does not have a well-defined axial shape. Abstract:The structures of 148-158Sm are studied in the frame of the interacting boson model. Attention is given to the triaxial interaction, and it is found that the triaxial interaction plays an important role in the detailed structure of this isotopic chain. The potential surfaces of these nuclei are also studied and the shapes of them are analysed. And it is found that though the triaxial interaction plays an important role in these nuclei, there are no stable triaxial shapes in the low-lying structures of these nuclei. © 2004 Chin. Phys. Abstract:The potential energy surfaces of even-even isotopes near 152Sm are investigated within the constrained reflection-asymmetric relativistic mean-field approach using parameter sets PK1 and NL3. It is shown that the critical-point candidate nucleus 152Sm marks the shape/phase transition not only from U(5) to SU(3) symmetry, but also from the octupole deformed ground state in 150Sm to the quadrupole deformed ground state in 154Sm. The important role of the octupole deformation driving pair (ν2f7/2, ν1i13/2) is demonstrated based on the components of the single-particle levels near the Fermi surface. In addition, the patterns of both the proton and the neutron octupole deformation driving pairs (ν2f7/2, ν1i13/2) and (π2d5/2, π1h11/2) are investigated.

Abstract:We report a stable germanium surface (15 3 23), which among all known stable germanium as well as silicon surfaces is the only one inside the unit stereographic triangle and has the highest indices. On the basis of high-resolution dual-bias scanning tunneling microscope images, a detailed model has been proposed for it for further investigation. The surface does not consist of nanometer facets of any other stable surfaces while some unstable surfaces, such as (102), may facet to including {15 3 23} facets, and thus is also a major stable surface, the same as (001), (111), (113). etc.

Abstract:For a shape-soft nucleus, the deformation change with increasing angular momentum of rotation can be significant. Total-Routhian-surface (TRS) calculations include the shape changes, but angular momentum is not conserved (neither is it a good quantum number, nor is it kept unchanged in the whole TRS mesh). In the projected shell model (PSM), the angular momentum appears as a good quantum number, but calculations have usually been performed with fixed deformation. In the present work, by performing angular-momentum projection on the mean-field potential-energy surface (PES), we can obtain an angular-momentum-conserved PES which gives deformation for a rotational state at a given spin. In order to investigate the shape-changing effect, we have chosen neutron-deficient Hg and Pb isotopes in which shape coexistence occurs. We interpret the irregular rotational behavior of the oblate bands at low spin as arising from deformation changes which are induced by collective rotation. At higher spin, the oblate rotational spectrum can also be influenced by the crossing between the K = 0 ground-state band and a low-K two-quasineutron band. Calculated g factors for the states of oblate bands are given for future experimental testing, and the intrinsic structures of high-K oblate states are investigated.
