Abstract:Based on the simulated temperature and precipitation from CMIP6 models, the joint distribution characteristics of summer temperature and precipitation in China are described in the Copula approach; the occurrence risk of compound extremes (i.e., warm/dry, and warm/wet events) and corresponding univariate events (i.e., warm, wet, and dry events) in historical period are compared; and the risk changes of compound extremes are discussed under global warming 1.5 °C and 2 °C. Results show that: 1) the Copula approach can describe the joint probability distribution of summer temperature and precipitation in observation and model simulations in most parts of China except for the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau; 2) The average risk of warm and wet events in China increases by 2.3 and 1.16 times under 1.5 °C warming respectively, increases by 2.83 and 1.29 times under 2 °C warming respectively while the risk of dry events decreases in most parts of China; 3) The average of warm/wet events in China increases by 5.48 and 10.01 times under 1.5 °C and 2 °C warming, respectively. Regions over Northern China and South China experience the most increased risk about more than 8 times. The warm/dry events show less increase magnitude with 1.82 and 2.04 times under two warming climates, respectively. The highest increase in risk is mainly located in Northern China. At an additional 0.5 °C warming from 1.5 °C to 2 °C, the regional average risk of warm/dry and warm/wet events increases by 1.40 and 2.74 times, respectively. In most areas, the risk of warm/wet events increases significantly and are greater than that of warm/dry events. This indicates that controlling global warming up to 1.5 °C can avoid more intense warm/dry and warm/wet events. Our work highlights that the risk of compound extremes may be underestimated if we only consider the univariate events.

Abstract:Sufficient samples of extreme precipitation events are needed in order to obtain reliable estimates of the probability of their occurrence. Here, we use a large ensemble simulation with 50 members from the Canadian Earth System Model (CanESM2) under the representative concentration pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) scenario to give future projection of the intensity and frequency of extreme precipitation events under different warming levels relative to the current climate over China. A bias-correction method based on quantile mapping is first used to remove systematic biases in the ensemble. The return value and return period are obtained by fitting enough annual maximum precipitation samples with the generalized extreme value to represent the intensity and frequency of extreme events, respectively. The results show that the average intensity of extreme precipitation in China will increase by nearly 8% per 1°C of global warming, which closely follows the Clausius–Clapeyron relation. Rarer extreme events will experience greater changes in frequency, especially under higher warming. The nationally averaged extreme precipitation events, presently expected to occur every 50 years (100 years) under the current climate conditions, are expected to occur approximately every 41 years (82 years), 32 years (62 years), 22 years (42 years) and 15 years (29 years) under warming levels of 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0°C, respectively. Northwestern China (NW), southwestern China (SW) and the Yangtze River valley (YZ) exhibit the greatest increase in probability ratio (PR) under future climate condition. The risk of extreme precipitation events, currently expected to occur once every 50 years, will be nearly 11 (21) times more likely to occur under a climate warming by 3.0°C (4.0°C). Limiting warming to 1.5°C will help avoid approximately 40%-50%, 70%-80% and over 90% of the increase in the risk of extreme events in almost all subregions if the global mean surface temperature (GMST) continues warming to 2.0°C, 3.0°C and 4.0°C, respectively. Our study provides a useful information for the understanding the impact of climate change on the future risk of extreme events over China.

Abstract:Climate change and its impacts at global warming of 1.5 °C and 2 °C are major concerns of the international community. Based on the multi-model dynamical downscaling outputs, by using the quantile–quantile (Q-Q) adjustment method to correct the biases for the future periods, projections are made for the variation trend of the extreme precipitation events over the middle and upper Yangtze River in the context of global warming of 1.5 °C and 2 °C. The results show that the Q-Q adjustment method significantly reduces the bias of simulated extreme precipitation. In the dynamical downscaling simulation over the middle and upper Yangtze River, the bias of the number of rainy days for daily precipitation exceeding 25 mm (R25) is reduced from 6 to 1d after correction, and the 95th percentile of precipitation (pq95) is reduced from 40 to 10% over the whole region. At 1.5 °C and 2 °C warming thresholds, precipitation will be more extreme, with increasing frequency and much greater intensity. Under the RCP4.5 scenario, the precipitation intensity (SDII), extreme precipitation contribution rate (pfl95), R25, and pq95 increase more at 2 °C than at 1.5 °C warming level, but the maximum consecutive 1-day and 5-day precipitation (R1d, R5d) increase slightly less. Under the RCP8.5 scenario, SDII, pq95, R1d, and R5d increase more at 2 °C than at 1.5 °C warming target, but pfl95 and R25 increase slightly less. From the perspective of spatial distribution, the future changes of each extreme precipitation indices show significant regional differences. All show a significant increasing trend in the upper Jialing River, the Wu River Basin, and the southern Sichuan Basin, but decreases trend in pq95, pfl95, R1d, and, R5d over the Northern Sichuan Basin.

Change in Extreme Temperature Event Frequency over Mainland China, 1961−2008

Abstract:Based on homogeneity-adjusted daily temperature data from national stations, the spatial and temporal change in extreme temperature events in mainland China have been analyzed for the period 1961-2008. The analysis shows that the numbers of frost days and ice days were significantly reduced, with the most significant reduction generally in northern China for ice days but more extensively across the country for frost days. Summer days and tropical nights significantly increased along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and in southern Southwest China. The maximum values of T-max (TXx) and T-min (TNx) and the minimum values of T-max (TXn) and T-min (TNn) generally rose, and TXx and TNx significantly increased in northern China, while TXn and TNn significantly increased across the whole country. A significant reduction at a rate of -8.23 d decade(-1) (-3.26 d decade(-1)) occurred for cool nights (days), and a significant increase at a rate of 8.16 d decade(-1) (5.22 d decade(-1)) occurred for warm nights (days). The reduction of cool nights and cool days occurred mainly in winter, but the increase of warm days and warm nights occurred mostly in autumn and summer. Extreme cold indices were reduced, mainly after the mid-1980s, while extreme warm indices increased remarkably after the mid-1990s. The analysis also shows that, for North China, the urbanization effect on the series of extreme temperature indices was statistically significant for the negative trends of frost days, diurnal temperature range, cool nights and cool days, and for the positive trends of summer days, tropical nights, TNx, TNn, and warm nights.

Projection of hourly extreme precipitation using the WRF model over eastern China

Abstract:The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was applied to simulate the current and future climates over eastern China at a convection‐permitting resolution (∼4km). A continuous 10‐year (1998–2007) simulation was performed for the historical climate, and three pseudo‐global warming (PGW) experiments driven by climate perturbations during 2070–2099 were conducted under the RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. After validation against reanalysis and observational data, the historical simulation was found capable of reasonably reproducing the characteristics of mean precipitation, extreme hourly precipitation, and large‐scale circulation. The PGW experiments projected an increase in precipitation intensity over most regions, especially North China under the RCP8.5 scenario (up to 30%). However, the precipitation frequency was projected to decrease, especially over the Yangtze River Basin in summer. A wetting (drying) trend was observed over North China (South China) in summer (winter), due to the increase (decrease) in precipitation intensity (frequency). The intensity and frequency of extreme events were projected to increase over most areas of eastern China, and the increase was the most dramatic under the RCP8.5 scenario, indicating a greater flood risk under stronger global warming. The relationship between extreme precipitation and temperature (EP–T) displayed a hook‐shape structure in both the present and future climates. The extreme precipitation intensity increased with temperature at a super Clausius–Clapeyron (C–C) scaling rate (>7%/K) until reaching a peak at temperatures of around 25–29°C, and then decreased at higher temperatures. The decreases were mainly attributed to moisture limitation at high temperatures. In the future, the EP–T relationship is expected to change mostly following the C–C law, with greater precipitation peaks under scenarios with higher carbon emissions, indicating that warmer climates contribute to further enhancement of extreme precipitation.

Abstract:The Tienshan Mountains is the main water source and ecological barrier in the central portion of the Silk Road Economic Belt, a new economic development zone with the Asia-Pacific Economic Circle to the east and the European Economic Circle to the west. Production-living-ecological activities in the arid Central Asia region are heavily dependent on water resources mainly recharged from melt and alpine precipitation. Hence, reliable projections of changes in extreme precipitation under global warming are particularly important for the utilization and management of water resources. Based on the downscaled and bias-corrected state-of-art global climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), we investigate changes in extreme precipitation over the Tienshan Mountains, Central Asia (TMCA) under different levels of global warming (1.5 °C, 2.0 °C, 3.0 °C, and 4.0 °C). We specifically assess the robustness of changes and the benefits of limiting warming to 2.0 °C as opposed to 3.0 °C. Compared with the reference period (1976–2005), a robust change in extreme precipitation across the TMCA is expected for all warming levels. And the fraction of land faced a robust change also increases with warming levels. Furthermore, there would be a substantial rise in extreme impacts in the TMCA when shifting from increases of 2.0 °C to 3.0 °C. In a scenario involving a 1.0 °C rise (i.e., from 2.0 °C to 3.0 °C), nearly 85.70 % and 60.19 % of the land in the TMCA will be affected by a robust increase in annual total wet-day precipitation (PRCPTOT) and number of light rain days (R5mm), respectively. In the same scenario, areas affected by robust changes in duration indices (consecutive dry days [CDD] and consecutive wet days [CWD]) will likely be less than 11.59 %. Limiting warming to 2.0 °C instead of 3.0 °C can avoid a marked increased impacts of about 62.84 %∼153.77 % of the change in frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme precipitation.

Abstract:Using statistically downscaled and bias-corrected CESM (Community Earth System Model) 11-member ensemble, we investigate the changes in precipitation and temperature extremes over China in 1.5 and 2 degrees C warmer climates. Most regions will experience a significant increase in wet extreme indices accompanied by fewer consecutive dry days under both warming targets. An additional 0.5 degrees C warming may result in stronger increases in wet extreme indices over most subregions and weak decreases over North China, although the grid point-level changes between the two scenarios are mostly nonsignificant. A robust increase in extreme high-temperature events and TNn (the coldest night) is found across China at a 2 degrees C relative to 1.5 degrees C scenario. Compared to a 2 degrees C world, a 0.5 degrees C less warming avoids 32-34% of the increases in the frequency and intensity of temperature extremes in China, particularly over Northeast China. Plain Language Summary Extreme precipitation and temperature events have serious impacts on natural ecosystems and human health over China. It is therefore crucial to assess how the extreme events may change in China under different warming levels. A set of simulations for the 1.5 and 2 degrees C targets are applied to investigate the changes in climate extremes over China and the benefits of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees C instead of 2 degrees C. Although the differences between the two warming levels are nonsignificant, a general wetting condition is expected for most areas when shifting from the 1.5 to 2 degrees C scenario. If a 1.5 degrees C scenario is followed, there will be a substantial reduction in the increases in hot extremes relative to 2 degrees C warming across the domain. The reduced impacts on the frequency and intensity of temperature extremes are estimated to be about 33% with 0.5 degrees C less global warming.

Abstract:The change of extreme precipitation with temperature has regional characteristics in the context of global warming. In this study, radiosonde data, co-located rain gauge (RG) observations, and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation radar (PR) products are used to explore the relationship between extreme precipitation intensity and near-surface temperature in Middle-East China (MEC) and the eastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) during 1998–2012. The results show that extreme precipitation intensity increases with increasing temperature at an approximate Clausius-Clapeyron (C-C) rate (i.e., water vapor increases by 7% as temperature increases by 1°C based on the C-C equation) in MEC and TP, but the rate of increase is larger in TP than in MEC. This is probably because TP (MEC) is featured with deep convective (stratiform) precipitation, which releases more (less) latent heat and strengthens the convection intensity on a shorter (longer) timescale. It is also found that when temperature is higher than 25°C (15°C) in MEC (TP), the extreme precipitation intensity decreases with rise of temperature, suggesting that the precipitation intensity does not always increase with warming. In this case, the limited atmospheric humidity and precipitable water could be the primary factors for the decrease in extreme precipitation intensity at higher temperatures.

Abstract:In recent years, concurrent climate extreme conditions (i.e., hot‐dry, cold‐dry, hot‐wet, and cold‐wet) have led to various unprecedented natural disasters (e.g., floods, landslide, wildfire, droughts, etc.), causing significant damages to human societies and ecosystems. This is especially true for China where many unprecedented natural disasters have been reported due to the recent warming in local climate. In this paper, we focus on the issue of ultra‐extreme events (1‰ threshold) and address how future global warming would affect the climate extreme conditions in China. Specifically, to reduce the uncertainties from models, we use a downscaled and bias‐corrected CMIP6 ensemble under two continuously‐warming scenarios to evaluate the impact of global warming on ultra‐extreme events over China. The results show that, under both SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios, extreme hot conditions would become dominant in most regions of China and some regions are likely to experience over 50 extreme hot days at future warming levels. The frequency of extreme cold events is projected to be small. More frequent extreme hot‐wet events with concurrence in the same month and year would be expected for China under the continuously‐warming scenarios. This is particularly obvious for the west where more than 6 hot‐wet months are likely to take place under future warming scenarios. This may imply that more extreme heat waves and flooding events would coincide in the same month or year for China in the future. For univariate ultra‐extreme events, both extreme hot events and extreme wet events would drop by above 25% from 2.0°C to 1.5°C global warming level, particularly under the SSP245 scenario. When the global mean temperature is limited to 1.5°C rather than 2°C, the avoided impacts of hot‐wet and cold‐wet extremes concurring in the same month will be larger than those of dry‐related compound extremes. Overall, the results suggest that slowing down global warming can reduce the frequency of concurrent climate extreme conditions in China, highlighting the importance of immediate action toward carbon emission reduction.

Intensification of extreme precipitation in arid Central Asia

Abstract:Changes in total and extreme precipitation are expected to intensify under climate warming. As Central Asia is among the driest regions in the world, more information is needed regarding the past and potential future changes in extreme precipitation in this region. In this study, we investigated changes in total and extreme precipitation in Central Asia based on observational records and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) model simulations. The results showed that all extreme precipitation-related indices except for consecutive dry days (CDD) experienced an increasing trend during 1936–2005. The annual total wet-day precipitation (PRCPTOT), daily intensity index (SDII), annual maximum 1- or 5-day precipitation amount (Rx1day and Rx5day), total annual number of days with precipitation exceeding heavy precipitation or very heavy precipitation thresholds (R10 and R20), and CDD were statistically robust. Generally, the statistically significant increasing trends are more pronounced in the wetter sub-regions, i.e. Northern and Southeastern Central Asia. Based on the CMIP5 model simulations, the PRCPTOT, Rx1day, and CDD in Central Asia are projected to increase robustly during 2006–2100 under representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5; higher RCPs had higher rates of extreme precipitation and lower signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). In addition, a considerable intensification of extreme precipitation and slight drought is predicted for the late 21st century (2071–2100). In Central Asia, the PRCPTOT, Rx1day, and CDD had an approximately linear relationship with global warming rates, with rates of 4.95%/K, 5.79%/K, and 2.79%/K, respectively, under RCP 4.5. The response rates were slightly lower under RCP 8.5 than under RCP 4.5 for these indices. The increase in total precipitation was mainly due to the intensification of extreme precipitation and a concomitant weakening of light precipitation, with a simultaneous overcompensation of increased evaporation due to global warming. Thus, our results suggest that total and extreme precipitation will intensify in Central Asia under a warming climate. Since increased extreme precipitation may lead to a heightened risk of flooding, water availability is predicted to remain limited over Central Asia.
