Abstract:The highly fractionated granites related to the ore deposits of strategic critical metals such as Zr, Hf, Nb and Ta are usually rich in fluorine, but how fluorine influences the magmatic ore-forming processes of these metals is still unclear. Zr4+/Hf4+/Nb5+/Ta5+-F- complexation in silicate melts cannot be identified with the current experimental methods. In this study, by using first principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) technique, we investigated the structures of Zr4+, Hf4+, Nb5+, Ta5+ and F- in albite melts to reveal their coordination geochemistry in highly fractionated granitic magmas. We obtained 6-fold Zr4+/Hf4+/Nb5+/Ta5+-O2- coordinations with the average bond lengths of about 2.0 angstrom and 1.9 angstrom for Zr4+/Hf4+-O2- and Nb5+/Ta5+-O2- respectively in both anhydrous and hydrous melts, and found that there was no Zr4+/Hf4+/Nb5+/Ta5+-F- complexation. F- bound with Si and Al in silicate melts, which generated non-bridging oxygens (NBO). With these findings, it is concluded that there is no direct chemical interaction between F- and Zr4+/Hf4+/Nb5+/Ta5+ in silicate melts and fluorine influences their ore-forming processes through indirect effects.
