Abstract:Wave–particle duality epitomizes the counterintuitive character of quantum physics. A striking illustration is the quantum delayed-choice experiment, which is based on Wheeler’s classic delayed-choice gedanken experiment, but with the addition of a quantum-controlled device enabling wave-to-particle transitions. Here, we realize a quantum delayed-choice experiment in which we control the wave and the particle states of photons and particularly the phase between them, thus directly establishing the created quantum nature of the wave–particle. We generate three-photon entangled states and inject one photon into a Mach–Zehnder interferometer embedded in a 186-m-long two-photon Hong–Ou–Mandel interferometer. The third photon is sent 141 m away from the interferometers and remotely prepares a two-photon quantum gate according to independent active choices under Einstein locality conditions. We realize transitions between wave and particle states in both classical and quantum scenarios, and therefore tests of the complementarity principle that go fundamentally beyond earlier implementations.

Abstract:Wave-particle complementarity lies at the heart of quantum mechanics. To illustrate this mysterious feature, Wheeler proposed the delayed-choice experiment, where a quantum system manifests the wave- or particle-like attribute, depending on the experimental arrangement, which is made after the system has entered the interferometer. In recent quantum delayed-choice experiments, these two complementary behaviors were simultaneously observed with a quantum interferometer in a superposition of being closed and open. We suggest and implement a conceptually different quantum delayed-choice experiment by introducing a which-path detector (WPD) that can simultaneously record and neglect the system's path information, but where the interferometer itself is classical. Our experiment is realized with a superconducting circuit, where a cavity acts as the WPD for an interfering qubit. Using this setup, we implement the first twofold delayed-choice experiment, which demonstrates that the system's behavior depends not only on the measuring device's configuration that can be chosen even after the system has been detected but also on whether we a posteriori erase or mark the which-path information, the latter of which cannot be revealed by previous quantum delayed-choice experiments. Our results represent the first demonstration of both counterintuitive features with the same experimental setup, significantly extending the concept of quantum delayed-choice experiment.

Abstract:Whether a photon exhibits wavelike or particlelike behaviour depends on the observation method, as clearly demonstrated by Wheeler's delayed choice (DC) experiments. A key aspect of such experiments is the random determination of the observation device's status, typically controlled by a random number generator or a quantum-controlling apparatus. Here, we propose a novel version of the quantum delayed choice (QDC) experiment by tailoring the quantum state of the single photon into an arbitrary polarization superposition. In this experiment, the "choice" can be considered as being made by the photon's state itself at the moment of observation, thereby violating classical causality. Additionally, we observe the morphing behaviour of the single photon between wavelike and particlelike characteristics, which challenges the classical picture of waves and particles. Utilizing the quantum state of the photon rather than the quantum-controlling devices not only facilitates the implementation of the QDC experiment but also helps deepen the understanding of Bohr's complementarity principle.

Abstract:Light is believed to exhibit wave–particle duality1 depending on the detecting devices, according to Bohr's complementarity principle2, as has been demonstrated by the ‘delayed-choice experiment’ with classical detecting devices3,4,5,6,7,8,9. A recent proposal10 suggests that the detecting device can also occupy a quantum state, and a quantum version of the delayed-choice experiment can be performed. Here, we experimentally realize the quantum delayed-choice experiment and observe the wave–particle morphing phenomenon of a single photon. We also illustrate, for the first time, the behaviour of the quantum wave–particle superposition state of a single photon. We find that the quantum wave–particle superposition state is distinct from the classical mixture state because of quantum interference between the wave and particle states. Our work reveals the deep relationship between the complementarity principle and the superposition principle, and it may be helpful in furthering understanding of the behaviour of light.

Abstract:The wave-particle duality dates back to Einstein's explanation of the photoelectric effect through quanta of light and de Broglie's hypothesis of matter waves. Quantum mechanics uses an abstract description for the behavior of physical systems such as photons, electrons, or atoms. Whether quantum predictions for single systems in an interferometric experiment allow an intuitive understanding in terms of the particle or wave picture, depends on the specific configuration which is being used. In principle, this leaves open the possibility that quantum systems always either behave definitely as a particle or definitely as a wave in every experimental run by a priori adapting to the specific experimental situation. This is precisely what is tried to be excluded by delayed-choice experiments, in which the observer chooses to reveal the particle or wave character – or even a continuous transformation between the two – of a quantum system at a late stage of the experiment. We review the history of delayed-choice gedanken experiments, which can be traced back to the early days of quantum mechanics. Then we discuss their experimental realizations, in particular Wheeler's delayed choice in interferometric setups as well as delayed-choice quantum erasure and entanglement swapping. The latter is particularly interesting, because it elevates the wave-particle duality of a single quantum system to an entanglement-separability duality of multiple systems.

Abstract:Wheeler's delayed-choice experiment delays the decision to observe either the wave or particle behavior of a photon until after it has entered the interferometer, and the quantum delayed-choice experiment provides the possibility of observing the wave and particle behavior simultaneously by introducing quantum control device. We here propose a modified quantum delayed-choice experiment without quantum control or entanglement assistance, in which a photon can be prepared in a wave-particle superposition state and the morphing behavior of wave-to-particle transition can be observed easily. It is demonstrated that the presented scheme can allow us to rule out classical hidden variable models in a device-independent manner via violating dimension witness. We also extend the scheme to the situation of two degrees of freedom, first constructing a hybrid quantum delayed-choice experiment which enables simultaneous observation of a photon's wave and particle behaviors in different degrees of freedom, and then proposing a scheme to prepare the single-photon wave-particle entanglement. This study is not only meaningful to explore the wave and particle properties of photons, but also provides potential for the research of the single-particle nonlocality from the perspective of the wave-particle degree of freedom.

This scheme we realized is based on the recently proposed scheme [Nat. Comms. 5:4997(2014)], which gave different results for quantum mechanics and HV theories. In our experiments, the intensities and the visibilities of the interference are in consistent the theoretical prediction of quantum mechanics. The results imply that a contradiction is appearing when all three assumptions of HV models are combined, though any two of the above assumptions are compatible with it.

Abstract:Following a suggestion by Wheeler, several delayed choice experiments have been performed. However, in those experiments one fact has always been ignored: that due to the fact that the single photon is nonlocal in time, the outcome will change if one changes the time to switch the experimental configuration within the photon's wavepacket. This study obtains some insights into this aspect by proposing an experimental scheme based on the delayed choice experiment and giving some related analysis. The result shows a transitional behavior from a particle to a wave, leading to a conclusion that the measuring operator could be time dependent and be changed in a single measurement.

Abstract:We show that an inhomogeneous cosmological lepton number may have produced turbulence in the primordial plasma when neutrinos entered (almost) free-streaming regime. This effect may be responsible for the origin of cosmic magnetic fields and give rise to a detectable background of gravitational waves. An existence of inhomogeneous lepton asymmetry could be naturally generated by active-sterile neutrino oscillations or by some versions of Affleck and Dine baryogenesis scenario.

Abstract:A fundamental feature of micro objects is the wave-particle duality which is addressed by Bohr's complementarity principle. To observe the wave and particle behaviours, quantum delayed-choice experiments based on linear optics have been realized at the single-photon level. Since they were performed by using a single photon as the input, repeating measurements were required in order to obtain different experimental data and adjusting experimental parameters was necessary prior to each of measurements. Different from the previous works, we here realize a simulation of quantum delayed-choice experiment through a single shot, which employs a classical intense light beam as the input instead of a single photon. Experimentally, we demonstrate the trade-off between distinguishability and visibility of photons in a two-arm interferometer in an intuitive way by utilizing the finite beam profile of the light. We observe the morphing between wave and particle natures of photons via a single shot of a charged-coupled-device camera. Since the image is captured within the exposure time which is several milliseconds, the phase fluctuation is negligible, and therefore our experimental setup is robust against the noise. This work provides a simple and new route to inspect quantum duality, which does not require adjusting experimental parameters frequently and only needs performing measurement once.

Abstract:Wave-particle duality constitutes one of the most intriguing features in quantum physics. A well-known gedanken experiment that provides evidence for this is the Wheeler's delayed-choice experiment based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Many different versions of delayed-choice experiments have been conducted with both classical and quantum detecting devices. Recently, it was proposed that the delayed-choice experiment could be devised from the perspective of device-independent prepare-and-measure scenario. In our work, we experimentally realize this modified version with a deterministic single-photon source, and examine the wave-particle objective in a causal-modeled scheme without assistance of entanglement, which is achieved by violating the dimension witness inequalities. Our experiment also provides an intriguing perspective and exhibits the benefits of studying quantum theory from the casual model point of view.
Proposal for a Quantum Delayed-Choice Experiment with Massive Mechanical Resonators.

Abstract:We present and analyze an experimentally-feasible implementation of a macroscopic quantum delayed-choice experiment to test a quantum wave-particle superposition on massive mechanical resonators. In our approach, the electronic spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy impurity is employed to control the coherent coupling between the mechanical modes of two carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate that a mechanical phonon can be in a coherent superposition of wave and particle, thus exhibiting both behaviors at the same time. Furthermore, we discuss the mechanical noise tolerable in our proposal and predict a critical temperature below which the morphing between wave and particle states can be effectively observed in the presence of environment-induced fluctuations.

Abstract:After reviewing papers regarding anchoring effect at both individual and group level,we conclude that the selective accessibility model gives a reasonable explanation for the mechanisms of anchoring effect. Meanwhile,by reviewing the latest research technique of cognitive decision-making field—the quantum model,including space characteristics of quantum theory and Schrodinger equation,this article elaborates the new trend in this research area.Further, we build a quantum model of anchoring effect at individual level first,and then extend this model to group level through studies on people in one group with high and low anchors respectively.

Abstract:This paper presents an observational analysis of the Delayed-Choice Quantum Eraser experiment through the framework of quantum mechanics. The Delayed-Choice Quantum Eraser, a variation of the classic double-slit experiment, demonstrates the intricate relationship between quantum measurement, wave-particle duality, and the temporal ordering of observations. By utilizing the principles of quantum superposition, entanglement, and the non-local collapse of the wave function, we seek to rationalize the counterintuitive outcomes observed in the experiment. Specifically, we explore how the act of measurement retroactively influences the observed behavior of particles, depending on whether or not the which-path information is available. Our analysis underscores the significance of the quantum mechanical concept of wave function collapse across spacetime, providing a deeper understanding of how quantum mechanics reconciles the delayed-choice paradox.

Abstract:Bohr's complementarity is one central tenet of quantum physics. The paradoxical wave-particle duality of quantum matters and photons has been tested in Young's double-slit (double-path) interferometers. The object exclusively exhibits wave and particle nature, depending measurement apparatus that can be delayed chosen to rule out too-naive interpretations of quantum complementarity. All experiments to date have been implemented in the double-path framework, while it is of fundamental interest to study complementarity in multipath interferometric systems. Here, we demonstrate generalized multipath wave-particle duality in a quantum delayed-choice experiment, implemented by large-scale silicon-integrated multipath interferometers. Single-photon displays sophisticated transitions between wave and particle characters, determined by the choice of quantum-controlled generalized Hadamard operations. We characterise particle-nature by multimode which-path information and wave-nature by multipath coherence of interference, and demonstrate the generalisation of Bohr's multipath duality relation. Our work provides deep insights into multidimensional quantum physics and benchmarks controllability of integrated photonic quantum technology.
