Abstract:Inverted perovskite solar cells have attracted increasing attention because they have achieved long operating lifetimes. However, they have exhibited significantly inferior power conversion efficiencies compared to regular perovskite solar cells. Here we reduce this efficiency gap using a trace amount of surface-anchoring alkylamine ligands (AALs) with different chain lengths as grain and interface modifiers. We show that long-chain AALs added to the precursor solution suppress nonradiative carrier recombination and improve the optoelectronic properties of mixed-cation mixed-halide perovskite films. The resulting AAL surface-modified films exhibit a prominent (100) orientation and lower trap-state density as well as enhanced carrier mobilities and diffusion lengths. These translate into a certified stabilized power conversion efficiency of 22.3% (23.0% power conversion efficiency for lab-measured champion devices). The devices operate for over 1,000 h at the maximum power point under simulated AM1.5 illumination, without loss of efficiency. While perovskite solar cells with an inverted architecture hold great promise for operation stability, their power conversion efficiency lags behind that of conventional cells. Here, Zheng et al. achieve a certified 22.34% efficiency, exploiting alkylamine ligands as grain and interface modifiers.
A Small‐Molecule “charge Driver” Enables Perovskite Quantum Dot Solar Cells with Efficiency Approaching 13%

Abstract:Halide perovskite colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have recently emerged as a promising candidate for CQD photovoltaics due to their superior optoelectronic properties to conventional chalcogenides CQDs. However, the low charge separation efficiency due to quantum confinement still remains a critical obstacle toward higher-performance perovskite CQD photovoltaics. Available strategies employed in the conventional CQD devices to enhance the carrier separation, such as the design of type-Ⅱ core-shell structure and versatile surface modification to tune the electronic properties, are still not applicable to the perovskite CQD system owing to the difficulty in modulating surface ligands and structural integrity. Herein, a facile strategy that takes advantage of conjugated small molecules that provide an additional driving force for effective charge separation in perovskite CQD solar cells is developed. The resulting perovskite CQD solar cell shows a power conversion efficiency approaching 13% with an open-circuit voltage of 1.10 V, short-circuit current density of 15.4 mA cm-2 , and fill factor of 74.8%, demonstrating the strong potential of this strategy toward achieving high-performance perovskite CQD solar cells.
Constructing Ultra-Shallow Near-Edge States for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Electronic band structure engineering of metal-halide perovskites (MHP) lies at the core of fundamental materials research and photovoltaic applications. However, reconfiguring the band structures in MHP for optimized electronic properties remains challenging. This article reports a generic strategy for constructing near-edge states to improve carrier properties, leading to enhanced device performances. The near-edge states are designed around the valence band edge using theoretical prediction and constructed through tailored material engineering. These states are experimentally revealed with activation energies of around 23 milli-electron volts by temperature-dependent time-resolved spectroscopy. Such small activation energies enable prolonged carrier lifetime with efficient carrier transition dynamics and low non-radiative recombination losses, as corroborated by the millisecond lifetimes of microwave conductivity. By constructing near-edge states in positive-intrinsic-negative inverted cells, a champion efficiency of 25.4% (25.0% certified) for a 0.07-cm2 cell and 23.6% (22.7% certified) for a 1-cm2 cell is achieved. The most stable encapsulated cell retains 90% of its initial efficiency after 1100 h of maximum power point tracking under one sun illumination (100 mW cm-2) at 65 degrees C in ambient air. Efficient doping of hybrid perovskites holds the potential to further advance solar cell efficiency. This study presents a generic strategy for perovskite doping by constructing ultra-shallow near-edge states. These states can effectively prolong electron-hole recombination through efficient trap and de-trap processes, resulting in over 25% efficiency in inverted perovskite solar cells with superior long-term operational stability.image

Abstract:Inorganic perovskite solar cells (IPSCs) have gained significant attention due to their excellent thermal stability and suitable bandgap (~1.7 eV) for tandem solar cell applications. However, the defect-induced non-radiative recombination losses, low charge extraction efficiency, energy level mismatches, and so on render the fabrication of high-efficiency inverted IPSCs remains challenging. Here, the use of 3-amino-5-bromopyridine-2-formamide (ABF) in methanol was dynamically spin-coated on the surface of CsPbI2.85Br0.15 film, which facilitates the limited etching of defect-rich subsurface layer, resulting in the formation of vertical PbI2 nanosheet structures. This enabled localized contacts between the perovskite film and the electron transport layer, suppress the recombination of electron-hole and beneficial to electron extraction. Additionally, the C=O and C=N groups in ABF effectively passivated the undercoordinated Pb2+ at grain boundaries and on the surface of CsPbI2.85Br0.15 film. Eventually, we achieved a champion efficiency of 20.80% (certified efficiency of 20.02%) for inverted IPSCs with enhanced stability, which is the highest value ever reported to date. Furthermore, we successfully prepared p-i-n type monolithic inorganic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells (IPSTSCs) with an efficiency of 26.26%. This strategy provided both fast extraction and efficient passivation at the electron-selective interface.

Surface n-type band bending for stable inverted CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells with over 20% efficiency

Abstract:Inverted CsPbI 3 perovskite solar cells offer merits for tandem and indoor photovoltaics. Compared to the regular structure (n–i–p), realizing high-efficiency inverted devices is still challenging due to severe energy losses at the contact of the p-type perovskite and n-type electron transporting layer (ETL). Herein, we develop a surface n-type band bending strategy to mitigate such energy loss. It is discovered that the post-deposition of propylamine hydrochloride induces a p to n-type transition at the CsPbI 3 surface to accelerate the separation and extraction of the electrons while passivating the surface defects. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of inverted CsPbI 3 devices reaches record-high values of 20.17% (19.67% on average) under 1-sun equivalent illumination and 38.93% under indoor LED light (1000 lux, 307 μW cm −2 ). Moreover, such inverted devices maintain ∼97% PCE after light soaking for 792 h at the open circuit condition while the control samples degrade to ∼11% in 552 h.

Abstract:Polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells (PSCs) are currently attracting a great deal of attention and gaining increasing importance, having already shown great promise as renewable, lightweight and low-cost energy sources1,2,3,4. Recently, the power-conversion efficiency of state-of-the-art PSCs has exceeded 8% in the scientific literature5. However, to find viable applications for this emerging photovoltaic technology, further enhancements in the efficiency towards 10% (the threshold for commercial applications) are urgently required6. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient PSCs with a certified efficiency of 9.2% using an inverted structure, which simultaneously offers ohmic contact for photogenerated charge-carrier collection and allows optimum photon harvest in the device. Because of the ease of use and drastic boost in efficiency provided by this device structure, this discovery could find use in fully exploiting the potential of various material systems, and also open up new opportunities to improve PSCs with a view to achieving an efficiency of 10%.

Abstract:In inverted perovskite solar cells, conventional planar 2D/3D perovskite heterojunctions typically exhibit a type-II band alignment, where the electric field tends to drive the electron motion in the opposite direction to the direction of electron transfer. Here, a 2D/3D gradient heterojunction is developed by allowing the 2D perovskite to infiltrate the 3D perovskite surface along the grain boundaries using the interaction between the organic cation of the 2D perovskite and the pseudohalogen thiocyanate ion (SCN-), which has the ability to diffuse downward. The infiltrated 2D perovskite not only fills the gaps of grain boundaries with improved structural stability, but it also reconstructs the original landscape of the electric field toward the n-doped surface to enable more rapid electron transfer and weaken the adverse type-II band alignment effect. Since 2D perovskite seals the GBs, the nonvolatile SCN- can accumulate at the top and bottom dual interfaces, releasing residual stress and significantly inhibiting nonradiative recombination. The device exhibits an excellent efficiency of 24.76% (certified 24.29%) and long-term stability that is >90% of the original PCE value after 800 h of heating at 85 °C or in high humidity (≈65%).

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) that have a positive–intrinsic–negative (p–i–n, or often referred to as inverted) structure are becoming increasingly attractive for commercialization owing to their rapid increase in power conversion efficiency, easily scalable fabrication, reliable operation and compatibility with various perovskite-based tandem device configurations. Here, we review key material and device considerations for making highly efficient and stable p–i–n PSCs. First, we summarize key advances in charge transport materials, which were critical to the rapid power conversion efficiency progress. Second, we discuss promising perovskite compositions and fabrication methods. We highlight various additive engineering approaches to improve the perovskite layer as well as interface engineering strategies that target either the buried or top perovskite surface layer. Third, we review progress in tandem devices, focusing on optimization of the interconnection layer. Next, we summarize the status and strategies for improving p–i–n PSC stability, especially considering the challenges of outdoor applications. We also provide prospects for future research directions and challenges.

Abstract:During the past 6 years, perovskite solar cells have experienced a rapid development and shown great potential as the next‐generation photovoltaics. For the perovskite solar cells with regular structure (n‐i‐p structure), device efficiency has reached over 20% after the intense efforts of researchers from all over the world. Recently, perovskite solar cells with the inverted structure (p‐i‐n structure) have been becoming more and more attractive, owing to their easy‐fabrication, cost‐effectiveness, and suppressed hysteresis characteristics. Some recent progress in their device performance and stability has indicated their promising future. Here, recent developments and future perspectives about inverted perovskite solar cells are reviewed. Interface engineering, film morphology control, device stability, hysteresis phenomena and other research hotspots are discussed to present the roadmap for the development of inverted perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:The all-inorganic CsPbI3 perovskite presents promising prospects due to its suitable band gap and nonvolatile nature, while serious nonradiative recombination and unmatched energy level alignment hinders its further developments. Here, a facile and effective surface treatment strategy is proposed to modify the CsPbI3 surface with ethanolamine, leading to significantly reduced defects, ameliorated band alignment and morphology. Consequently, a champion power conversion efficiency of 18.41% with improved stability is achieved for the inverted CsPbI3 solar cells.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites are emerging materials for the next-generation photovoltaics. Lead halides are the most commonly used lead precursors for perovskite active layers. Recently, lead acetate (Pb(Ac)(2)) has shown its superiority as the potential replacement for traditional lead halides. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to improve the efficiency for the perovskite solar cell based on lead acetate precursor. We utilized methylammonium bromide as an additive in the Pb(Ac)(2) and methylammonium iodide precursor solution, resulting in uniform, compact and pinhole-free perovskite films. We observed enhanced charge carrier extraction between the perovskite layer and charge collection layers and delivered a champion power conversion efficiency of 18.3% with a stabilized output efficiency of 17.6% at the maximum power point. The optimized devices also exhibited negligible current density-voltage (J-V) hysteresis under the scanning conditions.

Abstract:Although high power conversion efficiencies (PCE) have already been demonstrated in conventional structure polymer solar cells (PSCs), the development of high performance inverted structure polymer solar cells is still lagging behind despite their demonstrated superior stability and feasibility for roll-to-roll processing. To address this challenge, a detailed study of solution-processed, inverted-structure PSCs based on the blends of a low bandgap polymer, poly(indacenodithiophene-co-phananthrene-quinoxaline) (PIDT-PhanQ) and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) layer is carried out. Comprehensive characterization and optical modeling of the resulting devices is performed to understand the effect of device geometry on photovoltaic performance. Excellent device performance can be achieved by optimizing the optical field distribution and spatial profiles of excitons generation within the active layer in different device configurations. In the inverted structure, because the peak of the excitons generation is located farther away from the electron-collecting electrode, a higher blending ratio of fullerene is required to provide higher electron mobility in the BHJ for achieving good device performance.
A Surface‐Reconstructed Bilayer Heterojunction Enables Efficient and Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Surface reconstruction helps to further improve the efficiency of solar cells. In this study, a novel surface reconstruction method is presented that transforms the top surface of perovskite films into a bilayer heterojunction (BLH). This BLH structure enables an order of magnitude reduction in surface trap density, reaching 26.1% efficiency in inverted perovskite solar cells with superior long‐term operational stability. The efficiency of perovskite photovoltaics remains distant from their theoretical limits, primarily due to high photovoltage losses. Here a strategy is reported to minimize voltage losses by reconstructing the perovskite surface into a bilayer heterojunction (BLH) structure. Unlike conventional low‐dimensional capping layers, typically constrained to a few nanometers to prevent low fill factors, this methodology facilitates a more comprehensive reaction with surface defects, allowing a more substantial capping layer (≈50 nanometers) without compromising charge transport integrity. Time‐resolved microwave conductivity analysis indicates a significant reduction in trap density at the top region of the perovskite film, showing an order of magnitude lower than that of the pristine sample. Incorporating this BLH in inverted cells results in a remarkably low photovoltage deficit of 325 mV, leading to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 26.1% (25.72% certified). The encapsulated device maintains 94% of its original efficiency after 1200 h of maximum power point tracking under one sun illumination at 65 °C.

N‐Type Conductive Small Molecule Assisted 23.5% Efficient Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:An n‐type semiconductor (B4PyPPM) modifies a perovskite film via an anti‐solvent method. B4PyPPM can inhibit nonradiative recombination in the perovskite bulk, increase the built‐in potential, improve the Fermi level of the modified perovskite film, and facilitate the extraction of electrons to the electron transport layer. The champion sample achieves a high efficiency of 23.51% and excellent operational stability. Because of the compatibility with tandem devices and the ability to be manufactured at low temperatures, inverted perovskite solar cells have generated far‐ranging interest for potential commercial applications. However, their efficiency remains inadequate owing to various traps in the perovskite film and the restricted hole blocking ability of the electron transport layer. Thus, in this work, a wide‐bandgap n‐type semiconductor, 4,6‐bis(3,5‐di(pyridin‐4‐yl)phenyl)‐2‐phenylpyrimidine (B4PyPPM), to modify a perovskite film via an anti‐solvent method is introduced. The nitrogen sites of pyrimidine and pyridine rings in B4PyPPM exhibit strong interactions with the undercoordinated lead ions in the perovskite material. These interactions can reduce the trap state densities and inhibit nonradiative recombination of the perovskite bulk. Moreover, B4PyPPM can partially aggregate on the perovskite surface, leading to an improvement in the hole‐blocking ability at its interface. This modification can also increase the built‐in potential and upshift the Fermi level of the modified perovskite film, promoting electron extraction to the electron transport layer. The champion device achieves a high efficiency of 23.51%. Meantime, the sealed device retains ≈80% of its initial performance under a maximum power point tracking for nearly 2400 h, demonstrating an excellent operational stability.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with monolayer-modified anodes are promising for high efficiency and stability devices with simplified configuration. Though preliminary studies on modified anodes by small organic molecules were reported, the goal-directed design and regulation of such compounds have been sparsely reported so far, thus limiting device performances. Herein, D-o-D type triphenylamine derivatives with non-conjugated linkage of sp(3) oxygen are proposed to finely tune the energy level alignment and enhance the defect passivation at the ITO/perovskite interface, thus facilitating the efficient charge extraction at the anodes. The optimized molecules considerably ameliorate the photovoltaic performances of the corresponding inverted PSCs, engendering a preeminent power-conversion-efficiency (PCE) of 20.57% with negligible hysteresis. Remarkably, a good long-term stability is recorded for the unencapsulated device with over 94% of the initial PCE maintained after 180 days storage in N-2 condition. Those improved performances validate the feasibility of the D-o-D molecules for cost-effective PSCs with high-efficiency, and excellent long-term stability.

Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells With Efficient Mixed-Fullerene Derivative Charge Extraction Layers

Abstract:The short-circuit current density of inverted perovskite solar cells is unsatisfactory due to the intrinsic relatively low electron mobility and electrical conductivity of PC61BM. To solve this problem, a solution-processed mixed-fullerene derivative electron transporting material by mixing PC61BM with C-60 was developed to improve charge extraction capacity in fully low temperature processed devices. Incorporation of C-60 into the PC61BM layer improves the mobility from 2.15x10(-3) to 4.71x10(-3) cm(2)V(-1)s(-1) and the conductivity of electron transporting layers, thus enhancing the interfacial electron extraction capacity and reducing the electron transfer resistance. As a result, the average power conversion efficiency increases from 12.80% to 15.47% by 21% due to the significant increases in the average short-circuit current density from 19.26 to 22.08 mA.cm(-2) by 15%. Meanwhile, the optimal efficiency of 16.44% with rigid substrates and 12.93% with flexible substrates are obtained with almost no hysteresis. This work provides a novel and simple method to greatly improve the short-circuit current density and hence the photovoltaic performance of inverted perovskite solar cells.
Anion Exchange Promoting Non-Impurities Enables Conformable and Efficient Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The two-step sequential deposition is promising for control of the crystallization and growth of compact perovskite by separating the deposition of PbI2 and organic salt. Furthermore, thermal evaporated-PbI2 has the potential for textured surfaces. However, the performance of inverted perovskite solar cells by the two-step sequential deposition lags far behind the counterpart fabricated by the one-step deposition from a precursor solution. Here, we found insight into anion exchange in the sequential thermal evaporation-solution process for high-quality perovskite films. The exchange process promotes mass transport and penetration of organic compounds into evaporated PbI2, optimizes phase purity, and enables a homogeneous halide distribution with inhibited phase segregation. The devices fabricated by evaporated-PbI2 as the bottom layer following the solid-solution interdiffusion process yield a champion efficiency of 24.43% (certified 24.18%), which is the highest inverted perovskite solar cells based on evaporated PbI2. Incorporating the scalable blading process for solid-solution interdiffusion, the device exhibits an efficiency up to 22.22%. The resulting conformable and scalable cells maintain 95% of the initial efficiency after operation for 682 h under one sun illumination. This anion-exchange strategy provides instructive significance for future large-area and monolithic perovskite-silicon tandem cells.
