Joint Occurrence of Heatwaves and Ozone Pollution and Increased Health Risks in Beijing, China: Roles of Synoptic Weather Pattern and Urbanization

Abstract:Abstract. Heatwaves (HWs) paired with higher ozone (O3) concentration at surface level pose a serious threat to human health. Their combined modulation of synoptic patterns and urbanization remains unclear. By using five years of summertime temperature and O3 concentrations observation in Beijing, this study explored potential drivers of compound HWs and O3 pollution events. Three unfavourable synoptic weather patterns were identified to dominate the compound HWs and O3 pollution events. The weather patterns contributing to enhance those conditions are characterized by sinking air motion, low boundary layer height, and hot temperatures. Under the synergistic stress of HWs and O3 pollution, the public mortality risk increased by approximately 12.59 % (95 % confidence interval: 4.66 %, 21.42 %). Relative to rural areas, urbanization caused higher risks for HWs, but lower risks for O3 over urban areas. In general, unfavourable synoptic patterns and urbanization can enhance the compound risk of events in Beijing by 45.46 % and 8.08 %, respectively. Our findings provide robust evidence and implications for forecasting compound heatwaves and O3 pollution event and its health risks in Beijing or in other urban areas all over the word having high concentrations of O3 and high-density populations.

Abstract:In recent years, severe haze events often occurred in China, causing serious environmental problems. The mechanisms responsible for the haze formation, however, are still not well understood, hindering the forecast and mitigation of haze pollution. Our study of the 2012–13 winter haze events in Beijing shows that atmospheric water vapour plays a critical role in enhancing the heavy haze events. Under weak solar radiation and stagnant moist meteorological conditions in winter, air pollutants and water vapour accumulate in a shallow planetary boundary layer (PBL). A positive feedback cycle is triggered resulting in the formation of heavy haze: (1) the dispersal of water vapour is constrained by the shallow PBL, leading to an increase in relative humidity (RH); (2) the high RH induces an increase of aerosol particle size by enhanced hygroscopic growth and multiphase reactions to increase particle size and mass, which results in (3) further dimming and decrease of PBL height, and thus further depressing of aerosol and water vapour in a very shallow PBL. This positive feedback constitutes a self-amplification mechanism in which water vapour leads to a trapping and massive increase of particulate matter in the near-surface air to which people are exposed with severe health hazards.

Combining field measurements and model simulations, we quantified the relative influences of anthropogenic emissions and meteorological conditions on PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing over winters of 2002–2016. Between the winters of 2011 and 2016, stringent emission control measures resulted in a 21 % decrease in mean mass concentrations of PM2.5 in Beijing, with 7 fewer haze days per winter on average. With fixed emissions, meteorological conditions over the study period would have led to an increase of haze in Beijing, but the strict emission control measures have suppressed the unfavorable influences of recent climate. The unfavorable meteorological conditions are attributed to the weakening of the East Asia Winter Monsoon associated particularly with an increase in pressure associated with the Aleutian low.

Abstract:Regional atmospheric circulation patterns affect haze pollution and they change in the warming climate. Here, the characteristics of atmospheric circulation anomalies conducive to extreme haze occurrence in China and their historical and future trends are examined based on surface observations, reanalysis data, aerosol source tagging technique, and multi-model intercomparison results. December 2016 and 2017 are identified as the worst months of haze pollution over northern and southern China, featuring weakened and strengthened prevailing winds, respectively. During 1980–2019, the atmospheric pattern similar to December 2016 decreased, while that similar to 2017 increased, suggesting that severe haze formation mechanism in eastern China has been shifting from causes of local accumulation to regional transport processes. In the future, climate change under the sustainable and intermediate development scenarios are the ideal paths to reduce haze in China, while high social vulnerability and radiative forcing would cause a severe damage to the environment.

Abstract:Despite the stringent emission reduction measures implemented in Beijing over the past decade, a series of unprecedentedly severe haze events hit this megacity in January 2013. It is of great interest to find out the cause so as to provide a scientific basis for refining emission control measures. In the present study, we examine long-term (2000–2014) surface meteorological observations and simulate four recent winter haze episodes in 2010–2014 using a coupled meteorology-chemistry model (WRF-Chem). In addition to confirming the large-scale meteorological anomalies in northern China, the analysis of local meteorological parameters revealed that January 2013 had more frequent sustained weak southerly winds and high relative humidity in Beijing. Comparison of WRF-Chem simulations of the four episodes unambiguously shows that the combination of anomalously strong contribution of local and regional sources resulted into the extreme event in 2013: meteorological anomalies caused thicker temperature inversion, lower boundary layer, and hence stronger local accumulation of PM2.5 in urban Beijing (212 μg m−3 in 2013 case vs. 112–114 μg m−3 in historical cases); longer duration of southerly winds transported more pollutants to urban area (107 μg m−3 vs. 38–82 μg m−3) from eastern China. Our study also suggests that, although the emissions in Beijing have been decreased, they were still the major contributor (61–77%) to surface-layer PM2.5 over the urban area in recent winter episodes. Since adverse weather conditions such as those in January 2013 are uncontrollable, to alleviate severe haze pollution, Beijing must further strengthen its emission reduction measures and similar control should be extended to the entire eastern China.
Exploring the Severe Winter Haze in Beijing: the Impact of Synoptic Weather, Regional Transport and Heterogeneous Reactions

Abstract:Abstract. Extreme haze episodes repeatedly shrouded Beijing during the winter of 2012–2013, causing major environmental and health problems. To better understand these extreme events, we performed a model-assisted analysis of the hourly observation data of PM2.5 and its major chemical compositions. The synthetic analysis shows that (1) the severe winter haze was driven by stable synoptic meteorological conditions over northeastern China, and not by an abrupt increase in anthropogenic emissions. (2) Secondary species, including organics, sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium, were the major constituents of PM2.5 during this period. (3) Due to the dimming effect of high loading of aerosol particles, gaseous oxidant concentrations decreased significantly, suggesting a reduced production of secondary aerosols through gas-phase reactions. Surprisingly, the observational data reveals an enhanced production rate of secondary aerosols, suggesting an important contribution from other formation pathways, most likely heterogeneous reactions. These reactions appeared to be more efficient in producing secondary inorganics aerosols than organic aerosols resulting in a strongly elevated fraction of inorganics during heavily polluted periods. (4) Moreover, we found that high aerosol concentration was a regional phenomenon. The accumulation process of aerosol particles occurred successively from cities southeast of Beijing. The apparent sharp increase in PM2.5 concentration of up to several hundred μg m−3 per hour recorded in Beijing represented rapid recovery from an interruption to the continuous pollution accumulation over the region, rather than purely local chemical production. This suggests that regional transport of pollutants played an important role during these severe pollution events.

Links Between the Large‐Scale Circulation and Daily Air Quality over Central Eastern China During Winter

Abstract:We examine relationships between day‐to‐day variations in the large‐scale atmospheric circulation and the occurrence, intensity, and duration of haze during several recent winters, beginning with a focused examination of Beijing in 2013–2017 and then evaluating the extent to which the findings applied to other urban areas in China in 2015–2017. Composite analysis for Beijing indicates that haze preferentially occurred when the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM; based on potential vorticity) and Siberian High (SH; based on sea level pressure) were weak. Daily variations in EAWM and SH are cross‐correlated but have different relationships with conditions that affect haze development. EAWM is more strongly anticorrelated with boundary layer humidity, suggesting a greater influence on particulate growth. SH, by contrast, has stronger relationships with thermodynamic stability and near‐surface wind speed. A linear combination of these two indices provides a simple but effective indicator of heightened pollution risk over much of central eastern China. The particular value of the EAWM index is supported by its applicability to a broader area and its links to air quality in Beijing during the winter of 2017–2018. Clean conditions during November–February coincided with a persistent strong EAWM despite the SH deviating little from its climatology. The EAWM weakened in March, when air quality reverted to conditions typical of the previous four winters. These results confirm and help to clarify links between the large‐scale circulation and air quality at daily to weekly time scales and provide an empirical foundation for evaluating models used to simulate air quality in this region.
Recent intensification of winter haze in China linked to foreign emissions and meteorology

Abstract:Wintertime aerosol pollution in the North China Plain has increased over the past several decades as anthropogenic emissions in China have increased, and has dramatically escalated since the beginning of the 21 st century, but the causes and their quantitative attributions remain unclear. Here we use an aerosol source tagging capability implemented in a global aerosol-climate model to assess long-term trends of PM 2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in diameter) in the North China Plain. Our analysis suggests that the impact of China’s increasing domestic emissions on PM 2.5 concentrations over the last two decades of 20 th century was partially offset (13%) by decreasing foreign emission over this period. As foreign emissions stabilized after 2000, their counteracting effect almost disappeared, uncovering the impact of China’s increasing domestic emissions that had been partially offset in previous years by reductions in foreign emissions. A slowdown in the impact from foreign emission reductions together with weakening winds explain 25% of the increased PM 2.5 trend over 2000–2014 as compared to 1980–2000. Further reductions in foreign emissions are not expected to relieve China’s pollution in the future. Reducing local emissions is the most certain way to improve future air quality in the North China Plain.
Superimposed effects of typical local circulations driven by mountainous topography and aerosol–radiation interaction on heavy haze in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei central and southern plains in winter

Abstract:Although China's air quality has substantially improved in recent years due to the vigorous emissions reduction, the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region, especially its central and southern plains at the eastern foot of the Taihang Mountains, has been the most polluted area in China, with persistent and severe haze in winter. Combining meteorology–chemistry coupled model simulations and multiple observations, this study explored the causes of several heavy haze events in this area in January 2017, focusing on local circulations related to mountain terrain. The study results showed that on the weather scale, the configuration of the upper, middle, and lower atmosphere provided favorable weather and water vapor transport conditions for the development of haze pollution. Under the weak weather-scale systems, local circulation played a dominant role in the regional distribution and extreme values of PM 2.5 . Influenced by the Taihang and Yanshan mountains, vertical circulations and wind convergence zone were formed between the plain and mountain slopes. The vertical distribution of pollutants strongly depended on the intensity and location of the circulation. The circulation with high intensity and low altitude was more unfavorable for the vertical and horizontal diffusion of near-surface pollutants. More importantly, we found that the aerosol–radiation interaction (ARI) significantly amplified the impacts of local vertical circulations on heavy haze by two mechanisms. First, the ARI strengthened the vertical circulations at the lower levels, with the zonal wind speeds increasing by 0.3–0.8 m s −1 . Meanwhile, the ARI could cause a substantial downward shift in the vertical circulations ( ∼ 100 m). Second, the ARI weakened the horizontal diffusion of pollutants by reducing the westerly winds and enhancing wind convergence and southerly winds. Under these two mechanisms, pollutants could only recirculate in a limited space. This superposition of the typical local circulation and the ARI eventually contributed to the accumulation of pollutants and the consequent deterioration of haze pollution in the region.

Abstract:Eastern China has experienced severe and persistent winter haze episodes in recent years due to intensification of aerosol pollution. In addition to anthropogenic emissions, the winter aerosol pollution over eastern China is associated with unusual meteorological conditions, including weaker wind speeds. Here we show, based on model simulations, that during years with decreased wind speed, large decreases in dust emissions (29%) moderate the wintertime land–sea surface air temperature difference and further decrease winds by −0.06 (±0.05) m s −1 averaged over eastern China. The dust-induced lower winds enhance stagnation of air and account for about 13% of increasing aerosol concentrations over eastern China. Although recent increases in anthropogenic emissions are the main factor causing haze over eastern China, we conclude that natural emissions also exert a significant influence on the increases in wintertime aerosol concentrations, with important implications that need to be taken into account by air quality studies.

Abstract:Significance Severe haze events with large temporal/spatial coverages have occurred frequently in wintertime northern China. These extremes result from a complex interplay between emissions and atmospheric processes and provide a unique scientific platform to gain insights into many aspects of the relevant atmospheric chemistry and physics. Here we synthesize recent progress in understanding severe haze formation in northern China. In particular, we highlight that improved understanding of the emission sources, physical/chemical processes during haze evolution, and interactions with meteorological/climatic changes are necessary to unravel the causes, mechanisms, and trends for haze pollution. This viewpoint established on the basis of sound science is critical for improving haze prediction/forecast, formulating effective regulatory policies by decision makers, and raising public awareness of environmental protection.
Competing effects of aerosol reductions and circulation changes for future improvements in Beijing haze

Abstract:Abstract. Despite local emission reductions, severe haze events remain a serious issue in Beijing. Previous studies have suggested that both greenhouse gas increases and aerosol decreases are likely to increase the frequency of weather patterns conducive to haze events. However, the combined effect of atmospheric circulation changes and aerosol and precursor emission changes on Beijing haze remains unclear. We use the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) to explore the effects of aerosol and greenhouse gas emission changes on both haze weather and Beijing haze itself. We confirm that the occurrence of haze weather patterns is likely to increase in future under all SSPs and show that even though aerosol reductions play a small role, greenhouse gas increases are the main driver, especially during the second half of the 21st century. However, the severity of the haze events decreases on decadal timescales by as much as 70 % by 2100. The main influence on the haze itself is the reductions in local aerosol emissions, which outweigh the effects of changes in atmospheric circulation patterns. This demonstrates that aerosol reductions are beneficial, despite their influence on the circulation.

Impact of anthropogenic heat emissions on meteorological parameters and air quality in Beijing using a high-resolution model simulation

Abstract:Anthropogenic heat emissions (AHE) play an important role in modulating the atmospheric thermodynamic and kinetic properties within the urban planetary boundary layer, particularly in densely populated megacities like Beijing. In this study, we estimate the AHE by using a Large-scale Urban Consumption of energY (LUCY) model and further couple LUCY with a high-resolution regional chemical transport model to evaluate the impact of AHE on atmospheric environment in Beijing. In areas with high AHE, the 2-m temperature (T2) increased to varying degrees and showed distinct diurnal and seasonal variations with maxima in night and winter. The increase in 10-m wind speed (WS10) and planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) exhibited slight diurnal variations but showed significant seasonal variations. Further, the systematic continuous precipitation increased by 2.1 mm due to the increase in PBLH and water vapor in upper air. In contrast, the precipitation in local thermal convective showers increased little because of the limited water vapor. Meanwhile, the PM2.5 reduced in areas with high AHE because of the increase in WS10 and PBLH and continued to reduce as the pollution levels increased. In contrast, in areas where prevailing wind direction was opposite to that of thermal circulation caused by AHE, the WS10 reduced, leading to increased PM2.5. The changes of PM2.5 illustrated that a reasonable AHE scheme might be an effective means to improve the performance of PM2.5 simulation. Besides, high AHE aggravated the O3 pollution in urban areas due to the reduction in NOx.

Abstract:Future projection of diffusion conditions associated with extreme haze events over eastern China is of great importance to government emission regulations and public human health. Here, the diffusion conditions and their changes under future warming scenarios are examined. The relative strength of haze events in the Northern China Plain region increase from 150% during 2006-15 to 190% during 2090-99 under RCP8.5 scenarios, induced by a stronger and longer-lasting anticyclone anomaly in eastern China. The strengthened anticyclone anomaly is mainly induced by increased northern wave train convergence emanating from the Barents-Kara Sea, and the longer duration of the anticyclone anomaly is mainly induced by stronger local feedback that can extract more energy from the basic state to maintain the anticyclone anomaly in eastern China. Aerosol reduction is found to play a dominant role in strengthening the upstream wave train near the Barents-Kara Sea and the downstream anticyclone in eastern China, while the effects from increased greenhouse gases are small. The results of this study indicate that future aerosol emissions reduction can induce deteriorating diffusion conditions, suggesting more stringent regulations on aerosol emissions in China are needed to meet air quality standards.

Abstract:Air pollution is a major threat to human health and ecosystems. Using 10-year (2013–2022) multi-source observations for the Beijing, China, we showed that clean-air actions have significantly reduced PM 2.5 , PM 10 , CO, NO 2 , and SO 2 pollution, with an increase in the surface maximum daily 8-h average ozone (MDA8O 3 ) concentrations during autumn and winter, leading to a rapid diminishment of the urban–suburban gap in air pollution. Secondary sources and vehicle emissions were enhanced in both urban and suburban areas in all seasons except summer. By combining statistical analysis with the convergent cross-mapping model, the varying relationships between air pollution and meteorological conditions in the urban and suburban areas were delineated. The results suggested that boundary layer height and relative humidity exerted strong and stable influences on all air pollutants, except for MDA8O 3 , whose key meteorological driver was temperature. This study showed that increasing O 3 trends in autumn and winter and aggravated O 3 formation in summer in urban areas in Beijing became non-negligible from 2013 to 2022, despite the declining levels of air pollutants. Meteorological observations suggested that weather patterns in Beijing, characterized by higher temperatures, sunshine hours, and boundary layer height and lower relative humidity, have become more favorable for O 3 formation in autumn and winter. Future mitigation efforts should focus on reducing VOC and NOx emissions to avoid further deterioration of O 3 pollution under the frequent adverse meteorological conditions predicted under the background of global warming.

Atmospheric Circulation Anomaly over Mid- and High-Latitudes and Its Association with Severe Persistent Haze Events in Beijing

Abstract:In recent years, under strict air pollution control measures, the PM2.5 emission has been significantly reduced across China. However, the capital city of Beijing still experiences severe persistent haze events (SPHEs). This study investigated the dominant characteristics of SPHEs and their associations with synoptic atmospheric circulation anomalies in the winters of 2009-2020. The results reveal that 72.0% of winter SPHEs in Beijing occurred under an atmospheric dipole pattern involving positive geopotential height anomalies over northeastern China and negative height anomalies over West Siberia. This dipole pattern exhibited a barotropic structure, providing favorable conditions for pollutant accumulation in Beijing. Over the key region encompassing mid-to high-latitudes areas of Eurasia (50?-80?N, 30?-90?E), persistent negative height anomalies could be regarded as precursor anomalous events (PAEs) for haze occurrence in Beijing. Upon PAE initiation, a dipole pattern was formed downstream through atmospheric energy propagation, and the above positive height anomalies migrated southeastward into northeastern China, leading to an increase in PM2.5 in Beijing. After PAE onset, the PM2.5 concentration and haze frequency in Beijing increased to high levels lagging 5-8 days behind. Six days after PAE onset, the haze (severe haze) frequency reached a maximum value of 85.8% (53.6%), more than twice the winter average. Thus, PAE occurrence is a reliable precursor signal for severe haze in Beijing leading by 5-8 days, representing the crucial impact of circulation anomalies over mid-and high-latitudes. This precursor signal is also applicable to wide-range haze pollution in the whole region of North China.

Abstract:Fossil-fuel combustion related winter heating has become a major air quality and public health concern in northern China recently. We analyzed the impact of winter heating on aerosol loadings over China using the MODIS-Aqua Collection 6 aerosol product from 2004-2012. Absolute humidity (AH) and planetary boundary layer height (PBL) -adjusted aerosol optical depth (AOD*) was constructed to reflect ground-level PM2.5 concentrations. GIS analysis, standard statistical tests, and statistical modeling indicate that winter heating is an important factor causing increased PM2.5 levels in more than three-quarters of central and eastern China. The heating season AOD* was more than five times higher as the non-heating season AOD*, and the increase in AOD* in the heating areas was greater than in the non-heating areas. Finally, central heating tend to contribute less to air pollution relative to other means of household heating.
