Abstract:Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a huge environmental challenge in China. Based on field studies, secondary organic aerosols (SOA) contribute greatly to PM2.5 formation in many locations. Modeling SOA is a frontier research field in air quality and a rapidly developing field internationally. This review intends to provide a state-of-the-art understanding of the current status of SOA modeling in China and recommendations for future research. SOA has been shown to exhibit significant spatial and seasonal variations in China. The traditional pathway of SOA from the condensation of semi-volatile products by the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) tends to significantly underestimate the observations. This gap has been greatly improved by considering new pathways such as the heterogeneous reactions of dicarbonyls and epoxides, the aging of primary organic aerosols and SOA, the oxidation of semi- and intermediate VOCs from emissions, and the aqueous-phase reactions of water-soluble organic species. In addition to these mechanisms, the contributions of specific precursors and sources also depend on the emission inventory of precursors, which has significant uncertainties. The interactions between anthropogenic and biogenic sources and meteorological facteros affect SOA formation. Overall, SOA plays an essential role in the budget of solar radiative forcing and the new particle formation. This review focuses on the advances in modeling SOA in China since 2000. Parameterization of SOA mechanisms and properties and the emission and meteorology inputs should be improved to understand the characteristics and influences of SOA in China.
Modeling Biogenic and Anthropogenic Secondary Organic Aerosol in China

Abstract:A revised Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model with updated secondary organic aerosol (SOA) yields and a more detailed description of SOA formation from isoprene oxidation was applied to study the spatial and temporal distribution of SOA in China in the entire year of 2013. Predicted organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon and volatile organic compounds agreed favorably with observations at several urban areas, although the high OC concentrations in wintertime in Beijing were under-predicted. Predicted summer SOA was generally higher (10–15 µg m−3) due to large contributions of isoprene (country average, 61 %), although the relative importance varies in different regions. Winter SOA was slightly lower and was mostly due to emissions of alkane and aromatic compounds (51 %). Contributions of monoterpene SOA was relatively constant (8–10 %). Overall, biogenic SOA accounted for approximately 75 % of total SOA in summer, 50–60 % in autumn and spring, and 24 % in winter. The Sichuan Basin had the highest predicted SOA concentrations in the country in all seasons, with hourly concentrations up to 50 µg m−3. Approximately half of the SOA in all seasons was due to the traditional equilibrium partitioning of semivolatile components followed by oligomerization, while the remaining SOA was mainly due to reactive surface uptake of isoprene epoxide (5–14 %), glyoxal (14–25 %) and methylglyoxal (23–28 %). Sensitivity analyses showed that formation of SOA from biogenic emissions was significantly enhanced due to anthropogenic emissions. Removing all anthropogenic emissions while keeping the biogenic emissions unchanged led to total SOA concentrations of less than 1 µg m−3, which suggests that manmade emissions facilitated biogenic SOA formation and controlling anthropogenic emissions would result in reduction of both anthropogenic and biogenic SOA.
A review of methods for quantifying secondary organic aerosol

Abstract:Regional air pollution is complex and becomes increasingly important in China. Among many others, secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is one of the most important components of PM2.5. This paper discusses various methods for quantifying SOA in the atmosphere (including methods based on the EC tracer, WSOC, receptor model, the SOA tracers, and air quality model), presents the basic principle of each method and points out that 1) the EC-tracer method, the WSOC method and the receptor model method are relatively simple and convenient, but limited by the availability of local source profiles and some specific tracers; 2) the SOA-tracer method is analytically challenging but can supply source-specific SOA information;and 3) the air quality model method can provide large scale spatial distribution of SOA. This paper also summarizes the most recent results of SOA research in China and abroad and indicates that SOA is important in organic aerosol, and anthropogenic VOCs play a significant role in SOA formation in China. The primary purpose of this review is to provide basic and integrated information and suggestion for future directions of SOA study in China.

Abstract:Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is from the oxidation of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and accounts for a large fraction of ambient fine particles. SOA can directly and indirectly affect the solar radiation forcing, so it has great impact on global climate and regional air quality. Adverse effects of SOA on human health have also been found these years. Thus SOA study has become one of the hottest topics of atmospheric chemistry. However, due to the complexity of SOA and the limit of technology, our understanding about SOA's composition, sources and formation mechanism is very limited. The major approaches of SOA study include: laboratory simulation, modeling simulation and field measurement. This paper reviews the SOA studies basing on field measurement. The development of SOA measurement depends on the development of technology. Early studies can only measure limited polar compounds of ambient particles. Rough estimations have been made by using relatively well developed approaches, e.g. receptor model and non-biomass burning water soluble organic compounds. Tracer-yield method combines laboratory and ambient studies, and is so far the only approach that can estimate SOA from specific precursors. Development of on-line detection technique encourages new approaches to study SOA, e.g. EC (elemental carbon)/CO (carbon monoxide) tracer method, and AMS-PMF approach. The combination of AMS and organic tracer technique is probably the important direction of SOA study in the future.

Abstract:Abstract. Organic aerosol (OA) is a major component of tropospheric submicron aerosol that contributes to air pollution and causes adverse effects on human health. Chemical transport models have difficulties in reproducing the variability in OA concentrations in polluted areas, hindering understanding of the OA budget and sources. Herein, we apply both process-based and observation-constrained schemes to simulate OA in GEOS-Chem. Comprehensive data sets of surface OA, OA components, secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors, and oxidants were used for model–observation comparisons. The base models generally underestimate the SOA concentrations in China. In the revised schemes, updates were made on the emissions, volatility distributions, and SOA yields of semivolatile and intermediate-volatility organic compounds (SVOCs and IVOCs) and additional nitrous acid sources. With all the model improvements, both the process-based and observation-constrained SOA schemes can reproduce the observed mass concentrations of SOA and show spatial and seasonal consistency with each other. Our best model simulations suggest that anthropogenic SVOCs and IVOCs are the dominant source of SOA, with a contribution of over 50 % in most of China, which should be considered for pollution mitigation in the future. The residential sector may be the predominant source of SVOCs and IVOCs in winter, despite large uncertainty remaining in the emissions of IVOCs from the residential sector in northern China. The industry sector is also an important source of IVOCs, especially in summer. More SVOC and IVOC measurements are needed to constrain their emissions. Besides, the results highlight the sensitivity of SOA to hydroxyl radical (OH) levels in winter in polluted environments. The addition of nitrous acid sources can lead to over 30 % greater SOA mass concentrations in winter in northern China. It is important to have good OH simulations in air quality models.

Abstract:Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is a key component in atmospheric aerosols, strongly influencing air quality and climate. Most previous studies focused on SOA formation in the fine aerosol mode, and little is known about SOA formation across a broader size range, especially for the coarse aerosol mode. In this study, we coupled radiocarbon analysis and the offline aerosol mass spectrometric method to characterize water-soluble organic matter in size-segregated samples between 0.056 and 18 mu m collected in urban Shenzhen, China. For the first time, detailed size distributions of different types of oxygenated organic aerosols (OOAs) are obtained. Fossil fuel OOA was mostly distributed in fine particles, and biogenic OOA occurred mostly in coarse particles. Organic composition and correlation analyses suggested that the major source of the coarse-mode OOA was more plausible to be heterogeneous reactions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on soil dust rather than primary biological materials. If so, this mechanism would complement the missing sinks of biogenic VOCs, significantly influence the regional and global organic aerosol budgets, and thus should be considered in air quality and climate models. This study highlights the urgent need for laboratory simulations of heterogeneous reactions of various VOCs on soil dust.

Abstract:Secondary particulate matter exerts adverse effects on air quality and human health. The production or reaction rate of secondary aerosols in polluted environments remains uncertain and is complicated by diverse emissions and meteorological conditions. By concurrently measuring the mass spectra of compounds in both particulate (using an aerosol mass spectrometer) and gas phases (using proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry) in suburban Beijing, we linked the secondary organic aerosol (OA) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to photochemical age (t(age)) and obtained their reaction or production rates. Factorization analysis of the mass spectra of OA and the 108 VOC species resolved three oxygenated OAs (OOA) and three secondary VOC factors at different oxidation levels. Primary organic aerosols and VOCs from traffic sources were determined to be important sources for secondary aerosol formation. At high pollution levels under the conditions of weaker solar radiation and higher relative humidity, moderately oxygenated OA (O/C = 0.61) and secondary inorganics were coproduced in combination with rapid consumption of all VOCs. At lower pollution levels, the intense solar radiation caused substantial and rapid production of OOA (O/C = 0.81) and intermediate VOCs (both in a high oxidation state) at a rate of 15.0% h(-1) and 14.0% h(-1), respectively. These results highlight the feedback effects between radiation and moisture in terms of altering the formation mechanism of secondary aerosols. In particular, highly oxygenated secondary airborne products under strong radiation should be considered in regard to their environmental impact.

Abstract:Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is an important pollutant due to its significant impact on atmospheric pollution, climate change and human health. Understanding the source and distribution of SOA is the prerequisite of air pollution control. This study utilized the global chemical transport model MOZART4 (Model for Ozone and Related Chemical Tracers, Version 4) coupled with the parameterizations of SOA multiphase formation, to simulate the spatial and temporal distribution of SOA in China, and analyzed the source contributions of SOA from the aspects of different precursors and regions. Our results indicate that the majority of SOA production happened over the east and the south China due to the availability of SOA precursors, with the summertime production a factor of 2.5 higher than that in winter. Anthropogenic emissions played a dominant role in SOA production, accounting for 55% of SOA source in China, with the rest from biogenic sources (45%). The domestic emissions contributed 77% of SOA production in China, mainly influencing the SOA concentration distribution near the surface of eastern China, especially over North China Plain. Foreign emissions mainly dominated the SOA abundance in western China, especially at higher altitudes mainly due to the rare domestic emission over these areas and the long-range transportation of SOA.

Abstract:Various precursor emissions and chemical mechanisms for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation were incorporated into a regional air quality model system (RAQMS) and applied to investigate the distribution, composition, and source contribution of SOA over east China in summer 2018. Model comparison against a variety of observations at a national scale demonstrated that the model was able to reasonably reproduce meteorological variables, O3 and PM2.5 concentrations, and the model simulated SOA concentration generally agreed with observations, with the overall NMB of 7.0% and R of 0.4 in 10 cities over east China. The simulated period-mean SOA concentrations of 4–15 μg m−3 were mainly distributed over the North China Plain (NCP), the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and Chongqing district. SOA dominated organic aerosol (OA) over China in summertime (90%). The percentage contributions to SOA from ASOA (SOA produced from anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (AVOC)), BSOA (SOA produced from biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC)), DSOA (SOA produced from aqueous uptake of glyoxal and methylglyoxal) and S/I-SOA (SOA produced from semi-volatile and intermediate volatile organic compounds) were estimated to be 48.3%, 28.6%, 14.3%, and 8.8% respectively, over east China in summertime. In terms of domain and period average, ASOA contributed most to SOA (59%) in north China, while BSOA contributed most to SOA (37.3%) in northeast China. The percentage contribution of DSOA to SOA reached 21.5% in southwest China. S/I-SOA accounted for approximately 10% of SOA in most areas of east China. This study reveals that while AVOC dominates SOA formation on average over east China, the SOA source contributions differ considerably in different regions of China. BVOC makes the same contribution to SOA formation as AVOC in northeast China and southwest China, where forest coverage and BVOC emission are higher and anthropogenic emissions are relatively low, highlighting the significant role of BVOC in summer SOA formation in China.

Abstract:Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) constitutes a large fraction of OA, yet remains a source of significant uncertainties in climate models due to incomplete understanding of its formation mechanisms and evolutionary processes. Here we evaluated the effects of photochemical and aqueous-phase processing on SOA composition and oxidation degrees in three seasons in Beijing, China, using high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer measurements along with positive matrix factorization. Our results show that aqueous-phase processing has a dominant impact on the formation of more oxidized SOA (MO-OOA), and the contribution of MO-OOA to OA increases substantially as a function of relative humidity or liquid water content. In contrast, photochemical processing plays a major role in the formation of less oxidized SOA (LO-OOA), as indicated by the strong correlations between LO-OOA and odd oxygen (Ox = O3 + NO2) during periods of photochemical production (R2 = 0.59-0.80). Higher oxygen-to-carbon ratios of SOA during periods with higher RH were also found indicating a major role of aqueous-phase processing in changing the oxidation degree of SOA in Beijing. Episodes analyses further highlight that LO-OOA plays a more important role during the early stage of the formation of autumn/winter haze episodes while MO-OOA is more significant during the later evolution period.

Abstract:Biogenic secondary organic aerosol (BSOA) produced from naturally emitted biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) is closely affected by anthropogenic emissions. Reactive nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfate (SO4), and primary organic aerosol (POA) modulate transformations of BVOCs by altering the oxidation pathways and gas-particle partitioning processes. China has experienced rapid changes in anthropogenic emissions recently, but the response of BSOA remains unclear. We conducted GEOS-Chem simulations to examine this response and found that isoprene-derived SOA increased (3.1%/yr) similarly as SO4 (3.6%/yr) over 2000-2006 but declined faster (-8.0%/yr) than SO4 (-4.3%/yr) over 2007-2015. Sensitivity simulations suggested that SO4 significantly promoted heterogeneous reactive uptake of isoprene epoxydiols (IEPOX) formed SOA (SOA(IE)), and a high level of NOx suppressed the production of IEPOX and subsequently reduced SOA(IE). The model roughly reproduced observed declines of secondary organic carbon (SOC) and SO4 at a rural site in South China over 2007-2011, although the mass concentrations were substantially underestimated. We find that BSOA would contribute slightly more to PM2.5 (2.8%) in 2050 under the RCP4.5 scenario than the present day (2.1%). This model-based work provides insights into historical and future changes of BSOA and implies the need to consider the controllable part for air quality management.
Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation from Semi-Volatile and Intermediate Volatility Organic Compounds in the Fall in Beijing

Abstract:Intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) have recently been proposed as important precursors of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In the present work, 97 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and 80 intermediate volatility and semi-volatile organic compounds (IVOCs and SVOCs) were measured by online gas chromatography-mass spectrometer/flame ionization detection (GC-MS/FID), and offline thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (TD-GC-MS), respectively. The average concentration of speciated VOCs, IVOCs, and SVOCs were 22.36 ± 9.02 μg m−3, 1.01 ± 0.32 μg m−3, and 0.10 ± 0.17 μg m−3. Alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the main compounds of total S/IVOCs. With the increase in molecular weight, the concentrations decreased in the gas phase, while increasing in the particle phase. Vehicular emission is the most significant source according to the carbon preference index (CPI) and the carbon of the most abundant alkane (Cmax). The yield method was used to estimate SOA from the oxidation of VOCs and S/IVOCs. The estimated SOA mass from IVOCs and SVOCs (0.70 ± 0.57 μg m−3) was comparable to that of VOCs (0.62 ± 0.61 μg m−3), and the oxidation of PAHs and alkanes took up 28.70 ± 8.26% and 51.97 ± 20.77% of the total SOA estimation, respectively. Compared to previous work, our study provided detailed molecular information of ambient S/IVOC species and elucidated their importance on SOA formation. Despite their low concentration, S/IVOCs species are important SOA precursors which shared comparable contribution compared with VOCs.

Abstract:Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) has been identified as a major contributor to fine particulate matter ( PM 2.5 ) in the North China Plain (NCP). However, the chemical mechanisms involved are still unclear due to incomplete understanding of its multiple formation processes. Here we report field observations in summer in Handan of the NCP, based on high-resolution online measurements. Our results reveal the formation of SOA via photochemistry and two types of aqueous-phase chemistry, the latter of which include nocturnal and daytime processing. The photochemical pathway is the most important under high- O x (i.e., O 3 + NO 2 ) conditions (65.1 ± 20.4 ppb ). The efficient SOA formation from photochemistry ( O x -initiated SOA) dominated the daytime (65 % to OA), with an average growth rate of 0.8 μgm-3h-1 . During the high-relative-humidity (RH; 83.7 ± 12.5 %) period, strong nocturnal aqueous-phase SOA formation (aqSOA) played a significant role in SOA production (45 % to OA), with a nighttime growth rate of 0.6 μgm-3h-1 . Meanwhile, an equally fast growth rate of 0.6 μgm-3h-1 of O x -initiated SOA from daytime aqueous-phase photochemistry was also observed, which contributed 39 % to OA, showing that photochemistry in the aqueous phase is also a non-negligible pathway in summer. The primary-related SOA (SOA attributed to primary particulate organics) and aqSOA are related to residential coal combustion activities, supported by distinct fragments from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Moreover, the conversion and rapid oxidation of primary-related SOA to aqSOA were possible in the aqueous phase under high-RH conditions. This work sheds light on the multiple formation pathways of SOA in ambient air of complex pollution and improves our understanding of ambient SOA formation and aging in summer with high oxidation capacity.

Abstract:Using a new generation air quality modeling system (WRF/Chem) fully coupled with secondary organic aerosol model (SORGAM), we investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) as well as the relative contributions of anthropogenic and biogenic sources to the formation of SOA in 2006 over China. To improve SOA simulation, a parameterization scheme for the isoprene induced SOA formation was added in WRF/Chem. The simulated SOA concentrations show large temporal and spatial variability, with the highest levels occur in summer and the lowest concentrations occur in winter. The high SOA regions are located near 30°N in central China in summer, with values exceeding 8μgm−3, while they shift to South China, mainly in Pearl River Delta (PRD) region in winter, with the concentrations at or below 2μgm−3. Across the whole country, the average ground level SOA concentrations are 0.94, 2.54, 1.41, 0.43, and 1.34μgm−3 in spring, summer, autumn, winter, and year, respectively. Commonly, the SOA loading is mostly concentrated in the boundary layer (∼70%). Although the SOA concentrations are dominated by biogenic sources in summer, the contributions of anthropogenic sources exceed biogenic sources over most areas in winter. On the national level, the anthropogenic sources contribute 35% of total SOA, with 41%, 26%, 39%, and 59% in spring, summer, autumn and winter, respectively. The estimated annual SOA production reaches 3.05Tgyr−1 over China, accounting for about 4–25% of global SOA formation. The modeled OC and EC concentrations as well as SOC to OC ratios are compared with the measurements and previous studies. The results suggest that the spatial and temporal characteristic of OC and EC levels is well captured by the model. However, the simulated SOA concentrations in this study might be underestimated by 0–75%. The modeling SOA in this paper are in agreement with other field and modeling studies, also showing the importance of SOA in total organic aerosol in China.

Abstract:The understanding at a molecular level of ambient secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation is hampered by poorly constrained formation mechanisms and insufficient analytical methods. Especially in developing countries, SOA related haze is a great concern due to its significant effects on climate and human health. We present simultaneous measurements of gas-phase volatile organic compounds (VOCs), oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs), and particle-phase SOA in Beijing. We show that condensation of the measured OOMs explains 26-39% of the organic aerosol mass growth, with the contribution of OOMs to SOA enhanced during severe haze episodes. Our novel results provide a quantitative molecular connection from anthropogenic emissions to condensable organic oxidation product vapors, their concentration in particle-phase SOA, and ultimately to haze formation.
Sources of organic aerosols in eastern China: A modeling study with high-resolution intermediate-volatility and semi-volatile organic compound emissions

Abstract:Abstract. Organic aerosol (OA) makes up a substantial fraction of atmospheric particulate matter that exerts tremendous impacts on air quality, climate, and human health. Yet current chemical transport models fail to reproduce both the concentrations and temporal variations of OA, especially the secondary organic aerosol (SOA), hindering the identification of major contribution sources. One possibility is that precursors that are not yet included in the model exist, and intermediate-volatility and semi-volatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs) are advocated to be one of them. Herein, we established a high-resolution emission inventory of I/SVOCs and by incorporating it into the CMAQ model, concentrations, temporal variations, and spatial distributions of POA and SOA originated from different sources in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China were successfully simulated. Compared with the comprehensive observation data obtained in the region, i.e., volatile organic compounds (VOCs), organic carbon (OC), primary organic aerosol (POA) and SOA, significant model improvements in the simulations of different OA components were demonstrated. Furthermore, spatial and seasonal variations of different source contributions to OA production were identified. We found cooking emissions are predominant sources of POA in the densely populated urban area of the region. I/SVOC emissions from industrial sources are dominant contributors to the SOA formation, followed by those from mobile sources. While the former concentrated in eastern, central, and northern YRD, the latter mainly focused on the urban area. Our results indicate that future control measures should be specifically tailored on intraregional scale based on the different source characteristics to achieve the national goal of continuous improvement in air quality. In addition, local source profiles and emission factors of I/SVOCs as well as SOA formation mechanisms in model framework are urgently needed to be updated to further improve the model performance and thus the accuracy of source identifications.

Abstract:Physicochemical processes leading to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in rural Yangtze River Delta (YRD) are poorly constrained. We present observation results on chemical characteristics, sources and contributions from different formation routes of organic aerosol (OA) at a background site of YRD region in summer. High-resolution aerosol mass spectrometric analysis revealed that SOA dominated the total OA in rural YRD with a mass fraction of higher than 70%, emphasizing more significant impacts of secondary formation than primary emission on air quality in summer. Positive matrix factorization identified two SOA types that respectively associated with aqueous-phase processing (aqueous OOA) and photochemical oxidation (photochemical OOA). One foggy period with strong biomass burning influence (BB) and one clean period (Clean) with strong local influence were chosen for detailed analysis. Aqueous OOA and photochemical OOA had average mass ratios of 1.5:1 and 0.18:1 respectively for foggy-BB and Clean, suggesting the relative importance of different atmospheric processes on SOA formation under different environmental conditions. High OA concentrations (>15 μg/m3) were also associated with high fractional contributions from aqueous-phase processing in BB (40%) and photochemical processes in Clean (>60%). Furthermore, while aqueous-phase processing might promote the accumulation of OA, a better correlation between oxygenation levels of bulk OA with OX (O3+NO2) concentrations than that with aerosol liquid water content suggests that photochemical gas-phase oxidation imposed larger impacts on the degree of oxygenation of bulk OA. Our results highlight the combined effects of different chemical transformation pathways on local air quality and aerosol properties.

Abstract:Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is one of the least understood constituents of fine particles; current widely-used models cannot predict its loadings or oxidation state. Recent laboratory experiments demonstrated the importance of several new processes, including aging of SOA from traditional precursors, aging of primary organic aerosol (POA), and photo-oxidation of intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs). However, evaluating the effect of these processes in the real atmosphere is challenging. Most models used in previous studies are over-simplified and some key reaction trajectories are not captured, and model parameters are usually phenomenological and lack experimental constraints. Here we comprehensively assess the effect of organic aerosol (OA) aging and intermediate-volatility emissions on regional-scale OA pollution with a state-of-the-art model framework and experimentally constrained parameters. We find that OA aging and intermediate-volatility emissions together increase OA and SOA concentrations in Eastern China by about 40% and a factor of 10, respectively, thereby improving model-measurement agreement significantly. POA and IVOCs both constitute over 40% of OA concentrations, and IVOCs constitute over half of SOA concentrations; this differs significantly from previous apportionment of SOA sources. This study facilitates an improved estimate of aerosol-induced climate and health impacts, and implies a shift from current fine-particle control policies.

Abstract:The formation mechanism and evolution process of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) remain poorly understood due to measurement uncertainties and chemical complexities. Here, we present the characterization of non-refractory fine particles (NR-PM2.5) analyzed by means of a time-of-flight ACSM (ToF-ACSM) at a rural site in the North China Plain during winter. Our results show that air quality in rural areas was heavily polluted by primary organic aerosols (POA), which accounted for 83% of total organic aerosol (OA). The oxygenated organic aerosols (OOA) were mainly generated from local emissions. As pieces of evidence, firstly, less-oxidized OOA (LO-OOA) had good correlations with primary species like biomass burning OA (BBOA) (R2=0.54), EC (R2=0.46), and chloride (R2=0.46), implying LO-OOA was formed with the POA emission processes; secondly, there was a significant increase in OOA concentration after sunrise, indicating a lot of local generation during the daytime; thirdly, the potential source region of OOA was restricted in that of POA, implying that OOAs were converted from where primary emission exists. The formation processes of LO-OOA and more-oxidized OOA (MO-OOA) are different. Aqueous-phase chemistry had a dominant effect on the formation of LO-OOA due to the better correlation between aerosol liquid water content (ALWC) with LO-OOA (R2=0.54) than MO-OOA (R2=0.15). In comparison, both aqueous-phase and photochemical processes acted on the MO-OOA formation, when odd oxygen (Ox=O3+NO2) was low (Ox <35 ppb), MO-OOA concentration increased with the increment of ALWC. However, at high Ox level (Ox >35 ppb), photochemical oxidation played an essential role in MO-OOA formation.
