Abstract:The interdecadal change in the relationship between the winter mean surface air temperature (SAT) over East Asia (EA) and the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is investigated using both observational data and a simple general circulation model. The positive phase of the first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) of SAT over EA is characterized by significant warming over midlatitude to high-latitude EA and is linked to the Arctic Oscillation. The second EOF (SAT-EOF2) is represented by significant cooling extending from 55 degrees N to the tropics and abnormal warming over high-latitude EA. Focus is given to SAT-EOF2 which has a close relationship with the La Nina-type sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. A clear shift in SAT-EOF2 is observed in the mid-1980s. The relationships between SAT-EOF2 and ENSO in two subperiods, i.e., 1957 to 1982 (P1) and 1986 to 2010 (P2), are discussed and compared. Results show that the relationship between SAT-EOF2 and ENSO significantly strengthens after the mid-1980s due to stronger SST and precipitation anomalies in P2 than in P1 associated with ENSO in the tropical western Pacific. In the midlatitudes, the Pacific-North American teleconnection pattern is more closely related to ENSO in P2, whereas in P1, the ENSO-related atmospheric circulation anomalies are more similar to a zonally orientated teleconnection pattern. Numerical experiments suggest that the difference in the ENSO-related circulation anomaly in the midlatitudes is likely related to the difference in the climatological mean flows of these two subperiods.

Abstract:The impact of northern high-latitude volcanic (NHV) eruptions on El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is investigated based on ensemble simulations with the Community Earth System Model. The seasonality of the atmospheric circulation influences the NHV aerosol dispersion, causing stronger (weaker) Northern Hemisphere cooling after the January and April (July and October) eruptions. ENSO's response is found to be more dependent on NHV eruption seasons than that on tropical eruption seasons. The January eruption causes an El Nino in an eruption year [year (0) hereafter] while an El Nino occurs in year (1) after the October eruption. No significant El Nino occurs after the April (July) eruption. A diagnostic analysis reveals that these El Ninos' developments are attributed to the positive zonal, meridional advective, and thermocline feedbacks, triggered by the western Pacific westerly anomalies. The anomalous North Pacific cyclone (NPC) and Asian monsoon are key systems to excite anomalous westerlies, which are caused by the NHV-induced midlatitude cooling and Eurasian continent-North Pacific thermal contrast. After the January eruption, the anomalous NPC develops in early summer and connects with a weakened Asian summer monsoon, which excites anomalous westerlies over the Indo-western Pacific, activating the Bjerknes feedback. For the October eruption, the anomalous NPC and enhanced East Asian winter monsoon bring cold air to the Maritime Continent and warm the subtropical central North Pacific through surface heat flux exchange, exciting the westerly anomalies. These results suggest that the strong dependence on the seasonal timing of NHV should be a critical element of data-model comparisons.

Abstract:El Niño and the related phenomenon Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the strongest signal in the interannual variation of ocean-atmosphere system. It is mainly a tropical event but its impact is global. ENSO has been drawing great scientific attention in many international research programs. There has been an observational system for the tropical ocean, and scientists have known the climatologies of the upper ocean, developed some theories about the ENSO cycle, and established coupled ocean-atmosphere models to give encouraging predictions of ENSO for a 1-year lead. However, questions remain about the physical mechanisms for the ENSO cycle and its irregularity, ENSO-monsoon interactions, long-term variation of ENSO, and increasing the predictive skill of ENSO and its related climate variations.

Abstract:The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), originating in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, is a defining mode of interannual climate variability with profound impact on global climate and ecosystems. However, an understanding of how the ENSO might have evolved over geological timescales is still lacking, despite a well-accepted recognition that such an understanding has direct implications for constraining human-induced future ENSO changes. Here, using climate simulations, we show that ENSO has been a leading mode of tropical sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the past 250 My but with substantial variations in amplitude across geological periods. We show this result by performing and analyzing a series of coupled time-slice climate simulations forced by paleogeography, atmospheric CO2 concentrations, and solar radiation for the past 250 My, in 10-My intervals. The variations in ENSO amplitude across geological periods are little related to mean equatorial zonal SST gradient or global mean surface temperature of the respective periods but are primarily determined by interperiod difference in the background thermocline depth, according to a linear stability analysis. In addition, variations in atmospheric noise serve as an independent contributing factor to ENSO variations across intergeological periods. The two factors together explain about 76% of the interperiod variations in ENSO amplitude over the past 250 My. Our findings support the importance of changing ocean vertical thermal structure and atmospheric noise in influencing projected future ENSO change and its uncertainty.

Abstract:Diverse characteristics of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events challenge the traditional view of tropical coupled ocean-atmosphere systems. The probability of a transition from one type of event to another is influenced by multiple factors of which many are projected to change. Here we assess the likelihood of ENSO transitions in observations and climate models, including a distinction between events that peak in the Eastern Pacific (EP) and Central Pacific (CP). We find that the initial ENSO state influences the likelihood of certain transitions and that some transitions are not physically possible or stochastically likely. For example, transitions to CP events are more likely than EP events except from a neutral state. We also find that El Niños tend to occur as singular events compared to La Niñas. While consecutive El Niño and La Niña events of EP type are possible, opposing EP events do not occur in succession. We identify several transitions likely driven by internal dynamical processes including neutral conditions to El Niño, CP El Niño to another El Niño, EP El Niño to CP La Niña, CP La Niña to CP El Niño and La Niña, and EP La Niña to neutral and CP El Niño. Projections of future transitions show an increased probability of transitions to CP El Niño events while transitions to EP La Niña events become less frequent under a high-emissions scenario. Accordingly, transitions to these events become more and less likely, respectively. We also find changes in the likelihood of specific transitions in a warming world: consecutive CP El Niño events become more likely while EP El Niño events become less likely to transition into CP La Niña events. These changes are expected to occur as early as 2050 with some changes to be accelerated by the end of the 21st century.

Abstract:The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is one of the most important phenomena in climate. By studying the fluctuations of surface air temperature within one year between 1979-01-01 and 2016-12-31 of the region (30S-30N, 0E-360E) with eigen-decomposition, we find that the temperature fluctuations are dominated by the two principal modes whose temporal evolutions respond significantly to the ENSO variability. According to introduce a micro-correlation, we find that the coupling between the first principal mode and the temperature fluctuations in the El Nino region could result in different ENSO phases. Without this coupling, the El Nino region is in a normal phase. With the strong coupling between the El Nino region and the Northern Hemisphere, an El Nino event will appear with a high probability. Then this coupling changes to be strong between the El Nino region and the Southern Hemisphere accounting for the fast decay of El Nino after boreal winter, even leading to a La Nina event. Moreover, the coupling between the El Nino region and the second principal mode is found to be strong in normal or La Nina phases in response to the normal or strong Walker Circulations. We conjecture that the temporal evolutions of these couplings for the first and second principal modes are controlled by the meridional and zonal ocean-atmospheric circulations respectively.

Abstract:<p>The El Ni&#241;o&#8211;Southern Oscillation (ENSO), originating in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, is a defining mode of interannual climate variability with profound impact on global climate and ecosystems. Although ongoing coordinated community efforts have offered insights into how ENSO will change in the future under anthropogenic warming, the geological history of ENSO remains intricate. In particular, there is a clear lack of systematic study on how ENSO has evolved in response to vast variations in land-sea distributions and climate mean states over geological timescales. To unravel this, we analyze a series of time-slice coupled climate simulations forced by changes of paleogeography, atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> concentrations, and solar radiation in the past 250 million years (Myr). Our simulations for the first time demonstrate that ENSO is the leading mode of tropical Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) in the past 250 Myr. Further, the amplitude of ENSO is predominantly captured by the zonal advective feedback and thermocline feedback, both of which are primarily regulated by eastern equatorial Pacific climatological SST. These findings highlight the significance of climate mean states in interpretation of the amplitude of ENSO during the deep past, and provide enlightening implications for constraining future climate change.</p>
Change of ENSO characteristics in response to global warming

Abstract:By using datasets of HadISST monthly SST from 1895 to 2014 and 600-year simulations of two CESM model experiments with/without doubling of CO2 concentration,ENSO characteristics (such as intensity,maximum signal location,lifetime and frequency) are compared pre-and post-global warming.The analysis periods are defined by the eras of 1895-1954 and 1955-2014 in the observations and the two model experiments,without and with doubling of CO2 concentration,in the model,respectively.The main conclusions are as follows.Due to global warming,the maximum climatological SST warming occurs in the tropical western Pacific (La Ni(n)a-like background warming) and the tropical eastern Pacific (El Ni(n)o-like background warming) for observations and model,respectively,resulting in opposite zonal SST gradient anomalies in the tropical Pacific.The La Ni(n)a-like background warming induces intense surface divergence in the tropical central Pacific,which enhances the easterly trade winds in the tropical central-western Pacific and shifts the strongest ocean-atmosphere coupling westward,correspondingly.On the contrary,the El Ni(n)o-like background warming causes westerly winds in the whole tropical Pacific and moves the strongest ocean-atmosphere coupling eastward.Different background warmings determine the different evolution characteristics of ENSO events.Under the background of La Ni(n)a-like warming,ENSO tends to develop and mature in the tropical central Pacific,because the background easterly wind anomaly weakens the ENSO-induced westerly wind anomaly in the tropical western Pacific,leading to the so-called "Central Pacific ENSO (CP ENSO)".However,the so-called "Eastern Pacific ENSO (EP ENSO)" is likely formed due to increased westerly wind anomaly by the El Ni(n)o-like background warming.ENSO lifetime is significantly extended under both the El Ni(n)o-like and the La Ni(n)a-like background warmings,and especially,it can be prolonged by up to 3 months in the situation of El Ni(n)o-like background warming.The prolonged El Nino lifetime mainly applies to extreme El Ni(n)o events,which is caused by two processes in response to global warming.On the one hand,the earlier outbreak of the westerly wind bursts (WWB) in the tropical western Pacific makes El Ni(n)o occur earlier.On the other hand,the climatological thermocline depth becomes shallower in the tropical Pacific,which can slow down the eastward propagation speed of the negative-feedback Kelvin wave in the subsurface ocean.In addition,the climatological upper-ocean temperature gradient between the equator and off-equator reduces in the tropical central-eastern Pacific,which can weaken the "discharge" rate of the ENSO warm signal.Both of the above processes make El Ni(n)o decay slowly and persist longer.Results from both observations and the model also show that the frequency of ENSO events greatly increases due to global warming,and many more extreme El Ni(n)o and La Ni(n)a events appear under the El Ni(n)o-like and the La Ni(n)a-like background warmings,respectively.Based on the theories of ENSO evolution,this study shows the possible changes of ENSO characteristics in response to global warming,and reconciles the phenomena and mechanisms of different characteristics of ENSO changes in observations and models,which are essential for the understanding and prediction of the change of ENSO characteristics and its impact under the global warming background in the future.

Abstract:Focusing on ENSO seasonal phase locking, diversity in peak location, and propagation direction, as well as the El Nino-La Nina asymmetry in amplitude, duration, and transition, a set of empirical probabilistic diagnostics (EPD) is introduced to investigate how the ENSO behaviors reflected in SST may change in a warming climate. EPD is first applied to estimate the natural variation of ENSO behaviors. In the observations El Ninos and La Ninas mainly propagate westward and peak in boreal winter. El Ninos occur more at the eastern Pacific whereas La Ninas prefer the central Pacific. In a preindustrial control simulation of the GFDL CM2.1 model, the El Nino-La Nina asymmetry is substantial. La Nina characteristics generally agree with observations but El Nino's do not, typically propagating eastward and showing no obvious seasonal phase locking. So an alternative approach is using a stochastically forced simulation of a nonlinear data-driven model, which exhibits reasonably realistic ENSO behaviors and natural variation ranges. EPD is then applied to assess the potential changes of ENSO behaviors in the twenty-first century using CMIP5 models. Other than the increasing SST climatology, projected changes in many aspects of ENSO reflected in SST anomalies are heavily model dependent and generally within the range of natural variation. Shifts favoring eastward-propagating El Nino and La Nina are the most robust. Given various model biases for the twentieth century and lack of sufficient model agreements for the twenty-first-century projection, whether the projected changes for ENSO behaviors would actually take place remains largely uncertain.

Abstract:Satellite and ground-based observations are used to explore the composite oceanic - atmospheric link known as the El Ni\~no/La Ni\~na Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, which is closely associated with extreme weather events (e.g. heat waves, tornadoes, floods and droughts), incidence of epidemic diseases (e.g. malaria), severe coral bleaching, etc. The ENSO temporal evolution depends on the energy exchange between the coupled ocean/atmosphere system. Its cycle has an average period of about four years, but there is considerable modulation of it from several sources and this is not yet fully understood. This paper aims to give a better insight to the global signature of ENSO evolution considering both the continuous natural interactions taking place between ocean and atmosphere, and anthropogenic effects. The results obtained could be employed to elucidate the development of more accurate advanced modelling of ocean - atmosphere interactions, thereby improving climate change projections.

Abstract:The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) represents the largest source of year-to-year global climate variability. While Earth system models suggest a range of possible shifts in ENSO properties under continued greenhouse gas forcing, many centuries of preindustrial climate data are required to detect a potential shift in the properties of recent ENSO extremes. Here we reconstruct the strength of ENSO variations over the last 7,000 years with a new ensemble of fossil coral oxygen isotope records from the Line Islands, located in the central equatorial Pacific. The corals document a significant decrease in ENSO variance of similar to 20% from 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, coinciding with changes in spring/fall precessional insolation. We find that ENSO variability over the last five decades is similar to 25% stronger than during the preindustrial. Our results provide empirical support for recent climate model projections showing an intensification of ENSO extremes under greenhouse forcing. Plain Language Summary Recent modeling studies suggest that El Nino will intensify due to greenhouse warming. Here new coral reconstructions of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) record sustained, significant changes in ENSO variability over the last 7,000 years and imply that ENSO extremes of the last 50 years are significantly stronger than those of the preindustrial era in the central tropical Pacific. These records suggest that El Nino events already may be intensifying due to anthropogenic climate change.

Abstract:The main objective of this article is to establish a new mechanism of ENSO, as a self-organizing and selfexcitation system, with two highly coupled processes. The first is the oscillation between the two metastable warm (El Niño phase) and cold events (La Niña phase), and the second is the spatiotemporal oscillation of the sea surface temperature (SST) field. The symbiotic interplay between these two processes gives rises the climate variability associated with the ENSO, leads to both the random and deterministic features of the ENSO, and defines a new natural feedback mechanism, which drives the sporadic oscillation of the ENSO. The new mechanism is rigorously derived using a dynamic transition theory developed recently by the authors, which has also been successfully applied to a wide range of problems in nonlinear sciences.

Abstract:This study investigates the characteristics and intensity of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events from January 1875 to December 2023, employing an advanced method for intensity determination based on various ENSO indices defined as a continuous five-month period with temperatures exceeding 0.5 °C for warm events or falling below −0.5 °C for cold events. A total of 40 warm and 41 cold events were identified, with further classification revealing seven extreme warm events and five extreme cold events. The analysis shows a positive skewness in frequency distribution, indicating a predominance of strong warm events. The primary mode of variability is found to be interannual oscillation in the 3–8 year range, with significant decadal oscillations in the 10–16 year range. This study highlights the importance of methodological rigor in evaluating ENSO dynamics, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of climate variability and offering a reliable framework for future research.

Abstract:ENSO is the strongest interannual signal in the global climate system with worldwide climatic, ecological and societal impacts. Over the past decades, the research about ENSO prediction and predictability has attracted broad attention. With the development of coupled models, the improvement in initialization schemes and the progress in theoretical studies, ENSO has become the most predictable climate mode at the time scales from months to seasons. This paper reviews in detail the progress in ENSO predictions and predictability studies achieved in recent years. An emphasis is placed on two fundamental issues: the improvement in practical prediction skills and progress in the theoretical study of the intrinsic predictability limit. The former includes progress in the couple models, data assimilations, ensemble predictions and so on, and the latter focuses on efforts in the study of the optimal error growth and in the estimate of the intrinsic predictability limit.
Contributions of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Diversity to Low-Frequency Changes in ENSO Variance

Abstract:El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) diversity is characterized based on the longitudinal location of maximum sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) and amplitude in the tropical Pacific, as Central Pacific (CP) events are typically weaker than Eastern Pacific (EP) events. SSTA pattern and intensity undergo low-frequency modulations, affecting ENSO prediction skill and remote impacts. Yet, how different ENSO types contribute to these decadal variations and long-term variance trends remain uncertain. Here, we decompose the low-frequency changes of ENSO variance into contributions from ENSO diversity categories. We propose a fuzzy clustering of monthly SSTA to allow for non-binary event category memberships. Our approach identifies two La Niña and three El Niño categories and shows that the shift of ENSO variance in the mid-1970s is associated with an increasing likelihood of strong La Niña and extreme El Niño events.

Abstract:This Review looks at the state of knowledge on the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a natural climate phenomenon. It discusses recent advances and insights into how climate change will affect this natural climate varibility cycle. The El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the dominant climate phenomenon affecting extreme weather conditions worldwide. Its response to greenhouse warming has challenged scientists for decades, despite model agreement on projected changes in mean state. Recent studies have provided new insights into the elusive links between changes in ENSO and in the mean state of the Pacific climate. The projected slow-down in Walker circulation is expected to weaken equatorial Pacific Ocean currents, boosting the occurrences of eastward-propagating warm surface anomalies that characterize observed extreme El Niño events. Accelerated equatorial Pacific warming, particularly in the east, is expected to induce extreme rainfall in the eastern equatorial Pacific and extreme equatorward swings of the Pacific convergence zones, both of which are features of extreme El Niño. The frequency of extreme La Niña is also expected to increase in response to more extreme El Niños, an accelerated maritime continent warming and surface-intensified ocean warming. ENSO-related catastrophic weather events are thus likely to occur more frequently with unabated greenhouse-gas emissions. But model biases and recent observed strengthening of the Walker circulation highlight the need for further testing as new models, observations and insights become available.
On Changing El Niño: A View from Time-Varying Annual Cycle, Interannual Variability, and Mean State

Abstract:This study investigates changes in the frequency of ENSO, especially the prolonged 1990–95 El Nino event, in the context of secular changes in the annual cycle, ENSO interannual variability, and background mean state of the tropical eastern Pacific sea surface temperature (SST). The ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method is applied to isolate those components from the Nino-3 SST index for the period 1880–2008. It is shown that the annual cycle [referred to as a refined modulated annual cycle (MAC)] has strong interannual modulation and secular change in both amplitude and phase: a clear transition from increasing to decreasing amplitude around 1947/48, with both linear trends before and after this turning point statistically significant and the amplitude decreasing by 14% since then, and a significant phase delay trend for the period 1881–1938, but hardly any thereafter. Abstract:El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is by far the most energetic, and at present also the most predictable, short-term fluctuation in the Earth’s climate system, though the limits of its predictability are still a subject of considerable debate. As a result of over two-decades of intensive observational, theoretical and modeling efforts, ENSO’s basic dynamics is now well understood and its prediction has become a routine practice at application centers all over the world. The predictability of ENSO largely stems from the ocean–atmosphere interaction in the tropical Pacific and the low-dimensional nature of this coupled system. Present ENSO forecast models, in spite of their vast differences in complexity, exhibit comparable predictive skills, which seem to have hit a plateau at moderate level. However, mounting evidence suggests that there is still room for improvement. In particular, better model initialization and data assimilation, better simulation of surface heat and freshwater fluxes, and better representation of the relevant processes outside of the tropical Pacific, could all lead to improved ENSO forecasts.

Abstract:Deciphering the causes of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) represents one of the greatest scientific and societal challenges because ENSO impacts people's safety, food, water, health, and economy. Traditionally, ENSO has been considered a phenomenon that is mostly influenced by the interactions between oceanic and atmospheric processes, i.e., by the internal variability in Earth's ocean-atmosphere system. However, dendrochronological records of climate indices, ENSO among them, have statistically significant variance at periodicities related to solar activity (sunspots) and lunar precessions. Other studies indicate a modulation by the lunar nodal cycle of ocean's mixing and its implications on water and air temperatures, steric sea levels, coastal flooding, rain, river discharge and heat transport. Those findings suggest that astronomic forces may influence ENSO. In fact, this study shows that a fit to well-established periodicities from lunar precessions, solar activity and their interactions explains 91% of the variance of an ENSO index smoothed at 5 years, and 67% of a 3-yr filtered ENSO index. Provided that the future Earth's ocean-atmospheric system remains roughly within historical bounds under a changing climate in the next 2-3 decades, one can venture a projection into the future of 3- and 5-yr smoothed ENSO variability. Such projection is given here and might help in preparations for adaptation and mitigation measures caused by ENSO-related coastal hazards.
