Abstract:Nanochannels fabricated from the aggregation of charged amphiphilic nanoparticles are of growing interest. The nanochannel size can be further affected by electrostatic interactions between these nanoparticles and metal cations. Herein, size-tunable nanochannels (from 0.5 to 1.4 nm in average) are obtained via regulating the aggregation of anionic nanoparticles using sulfonated polysulfone (SP SF) nanoparticles as a model. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images and dynamic light scattering (DLS) curves show the aggregates of SPSF nanoparticles in a wide range from nanoscale to micrometer-scale via adding different metal cations. Further analysis of the nanochannels shows the quantitative correlation between ionic strength of metal cations (ISMC) and nanochannel size. Preliminary evaluation of the size-tunable nanochannels exhibits a good separation performance with the Na2SO4 rejection of 98.3% and water flux of 5.8 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1), indicating a high level among the reported researches.

Abstract:The aggregation behaviors and phase separation of binary nanoparticles immersed in semiflexible polymer brushes are explored using molecular dynamics simulations. The conformations of the binary nanoparticle-brush mixtures are very sensitive to the size ratio q = sigma(l)/sigma(s) where sigma(l) and sigma(s) are the diameters for large and small nanoparticles, respectively, and the attractive interactions epsilon(M) between the nanoparticles and polymer brushes. The phase separation of the binary nanoparticles is observed at a relatively strong attractive interaction under the effects of inter-nanoparticle depletion attractions provided by polymer brushes. Furthermore, the crystallization of small nanoparticles occurs at a strong interaction and a hexagonal close-packed-like (hcp-like) ordered structure is formed. The present results may promise a new approach for controlling the self-assembling behavior of nanoparticles and constructing a better macroscopic performance of the material.

Abstract:Nanosuspension, especially the amorphous type of that, is an effective way to improve the dissolution properties of poorly water-soluble drugs. Amorphous nanosuspensions of resveratrol were prepared here by a precipitation method without homogenization or ultrasonication step attached. The interactions between drug and stabilizers were revealed by infrared (IR) spectra and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and interpreted with the assistance of modulation of their conformational dynamics. When nonionic polymer PVA was used as a stabilizer, PVP was found to be capable of controlling the size of secondary particles by inducing the aggregation and agglomeration of primary nanoparticles, which can be attributed to the formation of hydrogen bonds. This method could be applicable to controlling the size of nanoparticles or change their surface state in similar nanoparticle systems.

Abstract:The control of the morphology of nanoparticles is a hot issue all over the world.Organic-inorganic materials can be tailor made with an infinite number of architectures and in diverse forms conveniently.A new type of organic inorganic hybrid material was reported to be synthesized by emulsion polymerization by using the monomers which contained alkoxysilane groups.However,polymerization and morphology could hardly be controled during the emulsion process, because the alkoxysilane group was easy to be subjected to hydrolysis and condensation by sol gel process which decreased the stability of the latex.In the present work, organic inorganic hybrid core shell nanoparticles were synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization.Through morphology design, polystyrene, as seeded cores, was synthesized firstly, then 3 trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate (MPS) was added to form MPS styrene copolymer shell on the surface of polystyrene core. Owing to the hydrolysis condensation of organic alkoxysilane groups in MPS,the organic inorganic hybrid shell was formed through sol gel process.The core shell structure was interpreted by thermodynamical representation and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).The nonionic surfactant used would decrease the stability of the latex.In acidic condition the latex turned into gel just after the addition of MPS,while,in basic condition the particle number decreased obviously, and the latex kept almost stable in neutral condition.The higher the MPS concentration in the emulsion was,the less stability the latex had.Adding MPS continuously could keep the latex more stable and the particle size could be controlled by this method.Then, the core of this kind of hybrid nanoparticles could be dissolved to yield hollow nanocapsules, with the proportion of the void volume 40 1%.
Controlling Vesicular Size Via Topological Engineering of Amphiphilic Polymer in Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Abstract:The significance of polymer topology to the size and morphology of polymeric assemblies was less studied. Herein we report the preparation of polymersomes with tunable sizes via topological engineering of the solvophobic block of the amphiphilic copolymer in polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). The topology of the solvophobic block could be facilely regulated by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion copolymerization of two kinds of monomers with distinctive molecular geometries at variable feed ratios. As a proof-of-concept study, RAFT dispersion copolymerization of benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) and stearyl methacrylate (SMA) produced polymersomes with size ranging from 200 to 1500 nm depending on the ratio of BzMA/SMA. Besides vesicles, assemblies with complex internal structures were obtained by varying the ratio of BzMA/SMA, suggesting the robustness of this strategy. The mechanism was revealed by a series of coarse-grained molecular simulations, which elucidated the dependence of the packing parameter on the composition of the solvophobic block. The generality and modularity for regulating vesicular size by topological engineering of solvophobic block were further established by RAFT dispersion copolymerization of BzMA and 2(perfluorooctyl)ethyl methacrylate, which also generated polymersomes with tunable sizes. The topological engineering of copolymer by RAFT dispersion copolymerization thus serves as a versatile and modular approach to controlling the size and morphology of polymer assemblies.
Morphology control between microspheres and nanofibers by solvent-induced approach based on crosslinked phosphazene-containing materials

Abstract:Multi-morphology control between monodisperse microspheres and uniform nanofibers was successfully achieved by adjusting the ratio of solvent composition. Through the condensation polymerization between hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and 4,4′-sulfonyldiphenol, the corresponding hybrid inorganic–organic materials appeared. The morphology of both microspheres and nanofibers contained excellent size and shape: the monodisperse microspheres with 0.7–0.9μm in diameter and the uniform nanofibers with 60nm in outer diameter. We applied the concept of three-dimensional Hansen solubility parameters for the initial explanation. The activity of the primary colloid particles and the solubility of triethylamine–hydrogen chloride crystal were considered as two factors for the mechanism explanation. This interesting research shows that the nano- and micro-materials with high crosslinked molecule structure and prepared by condensation polymerization can also achieve the morphology transition. It fills the blank in nano-morphology transition research and will provide great information for the research about the control of different morphology preparations based on polymer nanomaterials.

Abstract:Soluble conjugated polymeric nanoparticles are synthesized by Suzuki-type polycondensation of two monomers (Ax + By, x>2, y≥2) in the channel of ordered mesoporous silica-supported carbon nanomembranes (nanoreactors). These synthesized soluble conjugated microporous polymers (SCMPs) exhibit uniform particle-size distributions and well-controlled particle sizes. The control of particle size stems from the fact that the polycondensations exclusively take place inside the mesochannels of the nanoreactors. Photoluminescence studies show that polymeric nanoparticles with tetraphenylethene and pyrene substructures are highly fluorescent. The combination of both physical stability and processability offered by the soluble polymeric nanoparticles makes them particularly attractive in light emitting and other optoelectronic applications.
Controlling the Size of Nanostructures in Thin Films Via Blending of Block Copolymers and Homopolymers

Abstract:The effects of molecular weight and concentration of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) homopolymer or symmetric short polystyrene-block-poly (methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) diblock copolymer on the size of the nanostructures of its blends with symmetric long PS-b-PMMA diblock copolymer have been investigated by atomic force microscopy. By careful controlling of the film thickness, solvent selectivity, and annealing time, PMMA cylindrical microdomains oriented normal to the film surface were obtained in all thin films. With the addition of both low- and high-molecular-weight PMMA homopolymers, the cylindrical domain sizes increased although it was less obvious for the lower molecular weight homopolymer. In contrast to the homopolymer, adding the short chain diblock copolymer resulted in a decrease in the cylindrical domain size, which was ascribed to the reduction of the interfacial tension and increase in the stretching energy.

Abstract:Supramolecular assembly determines the formation and transformation of soft materials. So far, the construction and transformation of conventional (<C20) zwitterionic surfactant elastic hydrogel have been a challenging and vital issue. In this work, a C18-tailed zwitterionic surfactant supramolecular hydrogel is constructed with N-octadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-2-hydroxy-1-propane-sulfonate (OHSB) and sodium salicylate (NaSal). The N,N,2,2-tetramethyl-1, 3-propanediamine (TPA1), as the non-ionic polar small molecules, were chosen to control the microstructure and macro-viscoelasticity of zwitterionic surfactant supramolecular hydrogel. With the addition of TPA1, the rheological properties and microstructural images of the OHSB/NaSal system show that the microstructure has changed from elastic hydrogels via viscoelastic wormlike micelles (WLMs) to spherical micelles. With the N,N,N’,N’-tetramethyl-1,3-propanediamine (TPA2), the isomer of TPA1, is added into OHSB/NaSal system in the same concentration, the difference in rheology and microstructure indirectly indicates the influence of hydrogen bonding on self-assembly. By systematically varying components, insight into the intermolecular interaction between OHSB, NaSal, and TPA1 and its effect on the microstructure during aggregation and transition are gained by the complementary use of 1H NMR, rheological property, cryo-SEM, cryo-TEM, and DLS. We expect it to be a good model for conventional zwitterionic surfactant supramolecular hydrogel and a new method for controlling the internal nanostructure of micelles, which is helpful to understand the construction and finely tune of conventional zwitterionic surfactant supramolecular hydrogel and widen their applications.

Abstract:Soluble conjugated polymeric nanoparticles were synthesized through Sonogashira polycondensation between different combinations of multifunctional alkynes and aryl halides in structurally well-defined mesoporous reactors. The growth of the polymeric nanoparticles was controlled by the spatial confinement of the nanoreactors, giving conjugated polymeric nanoparticles with narrow size distribution centered at 5 nm. All the obtained polymers are freely soluble in common solvents and can be fabricated into thin film. Both of the solution and thin film prepared from these polymeric nanoparticles were highly fluorescent, endowing them potential applications in light emitting and other optoelectronic fields. Abstract:ABSTRACT Despite great interests in using zwitterionic polymers for membrane surface modification to enhance antifouling properties, there lacks fundamental understanding of the relationship between polymer structure and water/salt separation properties. In this study, two series of zwitterionic polymers were prepared from sulfobetaine methacrylate and 2‐methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine. Both are crosslinked by poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA). These copolymers were thoroughly characterized in terms of sol‐gel fraction, density, glass transition temperature, contact angle, water and salt transport properties, and pure‐gas permeability. Interestingly, the zwitterionic polymers exhibit water sorption and permeability similar to noncharged poly(ethylene glycol)‐based materials. These zwitterionic polymers exhibit lower NaCl diffusivity and permeability and thus higher water/NaCl selectivity than the non‐charged PEG‐based materials at similar water volume fractions, demonstrating their promise for membrane surface modification for desalination and wastewater treatment. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Size-Controlled Synthesis of Soluble-Conjugated Polymeric Nanoparticles in Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Nanospheres

Abstract:A size-controlled method has been exploited to synthesize 20 kinds of soluble-conjugated polymeric nanoparticles (SCPNs) through cross-coupling polymerizations between various combinations of symmetrical multifunctional monomers (A(x)+B-y, x > 2, y >= 2). Unlike the classical polycondensation of these kinds of monomers where infinite polymer networks and insoluble polymeric products are typically formed, this confined polymerization in palladium nanoparticles-loaded dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres produced SCPNs with good to high yields, narrow particle size distribution, and high solubility in common organic solvents. The controlled size of SCPNs characterized with gel permeation chromatography shows narrow distribution and various molecular weight ranging from 2164 to 14 234 Da, transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering analyses range from 5 to 15 nm, suggesting the confined polymerization occurring inside of the mesopores. By simply adjusting the monomer structure and selecting an appropriate cross-coupling polymerization method among Suzuki, Stille, Sonogashira, and direct arylation polymerizations, the obtained SCPNs show bright fluorescence emission varying from blue to red. The SCPNs with long alkyl chain substituents in monomer units show good processability and smooth polymer films are formed by the simple spin-casting method. The repeatable and straightforward synthesis of SCPNs endows them with wide application prospects in light-emission, fluorescence sensing, and bioimaging.
Synthesis and Stimuli-Responsive Properties of Chitosan/Poly (acrylic Acid) Hollow Nanospheres

Abstract:We report here a synthetic study on the formation process of hollow polymeric nanospheres based on a simple, core-template-free route, and the effects of polymerization concentration, shell cross-linking, pH, salt concentration and temperature on the size and stability of hollow polymeric nanospheres. The hollow structure of polymeric nanospheres is spontaneously formed by polymerization of acrylic acid monomers inside the chitosan–acrylic acid assemblies. It is found that (i) the hollow structure of nanospheres is stabilized by both physical cross-linking in the inner shell and chemical cross-linking in the outmost shell; (ii) the size of the hollow spheres can be adjusted over the range of 77–500nm by controlling the concentration of chitosan–acrylic acid assemblies in the reaction system; (iii) the synthesized nanospheres are stimuli-responsive. The size of the hollow nanospheres can be manipulated by changing pH, salt concentration and temperature. Furthermore, with heating and cooling the variation in size of hollow nanospheres is completely reversible and reproducible; (iv) the surface of the hollow nanospheres obtained is chemically active, which provides the functional sites with chemical groups for subsequent chemical reactions at the surface.
Modulating the Arrangement of Charged Nanotubes by Ionic Strength in Salty Water

Abstract:Despite the important role and potential application of charged cylindrical polyelectrolytes, biomacromolecules, and self-assembles, salt-modulated organization of those 1D charged nanostructures remains a topic relatively unexplored with an obscure underlying mechanism. In this Letter, the aggregation of oriented nanotubes self-assembled by ionic aromatic oligoamide in aqueous solution of NaCl over a wide concentration range is probed via small-angle X-ray scattering and a transmission electron microscope. The arrangement of nanotubes undergoes order-disorder transition sequences from an ordered rectangular phase to hexagonal packing and then to a lamellar gel. The observed transitions are understood by ionic effects on the electrostatic interaction between charged nanotubes and osmotic pressure due to ion partitioning. Above the physiological condition, electrostatic interactions are largely screened by the salts, while osmotic effects start to regulate the aggregation behavior and concomitantly deform the nanotubes. The study demonstrates rich phase behaviors of ordered, charged 1D nanostructures by tuning the ionic strength and underlying key physical principles.
Controllable Vesicular Size and Shape in Polymerization-Induced Self-assembly Aided by Aromatic Interactions

Abstract:The size and shape of polymeric vesicles have great impact on their physicochemical and biological properties. Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is an efficient method to fabricate vesicles. In most PISA-cases, the formation of vesicles is driven by the solvophobic interactions which are lack of versatility on finely structural regulation. Herein, controlling vesicular size and shape is realized in PISA aided by aromatic interactions. Aromatic interactions between the membrane-forming blocks contribute to the augments of membrane tension which lead to the formation of smaller vesicles (as small as 70 nm), but overly enhanced aromatic interactions result in vesicle fusion rather than size decreasing. When the membrane tension is dominated by aromatic interactions and meanwhile high enough to overcome the energetic barriers of fusion, the aromatic interactions drive vesicle fusion in a directional manner to form tubular structures. The precise regulation of vesicular size and shape in PISA would pave the way to fabricate vesicles for a series of size/shape-dependent applications.

Abstract:A facile technique with only one step for fabrication of anisotropic colloidal particles at the air/water interface is demonstrated. Anisotropic colloidal particles with controlled shapes can be easily obtained by tuning the incubation time in solvent vapor at room temperature. The formation of separate anisotropic particles is attributed to the lateral stretch on the particles by the interfacial forces and repulsion among the neighboring particles by the generation of the polymer solution flows. To further explain the proposed formation mechanism of the colloidal particles with shape anisotropy, an in situ experiment is designed for direct observation of the arrangement change of the colloidal particles. This fabrication technique is general and applicable to polymer colloidal particles with various initial sizes ranging from microscale to nanoscale. Moreover, the elastic properties of the anisotropic colloidal particles are measured which exhibit a prominent change with different shapes and the change trend of the elastic moduli is similar for particles with different original sizes. This work provides a versatile approach for fabrication of anisotropic colloidal particles with tunable shapes and sizes and establishes the interplay between particle shape and elastic property, which is much valuable for further research on the effect of particle parameters on drug delivery process.

Abstract:The construction of refined architectures plays a crucial role in performance improvement and application expansion of advanced materials. The synthesis of carbon microspheres with a refined hierarchical structure is still a problem in synthetic methodology, because it is difficult to achieve the necessary delicate control of the interior structure and outer shell across the microscale to nanoscale. Nitrogen-doped multichamber carbon (MCC) microspheres with a refined hierarchical structure are realized here via a surfactant-directed space-confined polymerization strategy. The MCC precursor is not the traditional phenolic resol but a new kind of 2,6-diaminopyridine-based multichamber polymer (MCP) with a high nitrogen content up to 20 wt%. The morphology and sizes of MCP microspheres can be easily controlled by a dual-surfactant system. The as-synthesized MCC with a highly microporous shell, a multichamber inner core, and beneficial N-doping can serve as a promising supercapacitor material.
Kinetic Control of Length and Morphology of Segmented Polymeric Nanofibers in Microfluidic Chips

Abstract:In this work, we report an approach to prepare segmented polymer nanofibers (SPNFs) composed of rodlike subunits by kinetically controlled self-assembly of polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine)-based supramolecules in microfluidic chips. The length and morphology of the SPNFs could be effectively adjusted by changing the total flow rate (Vtotal) and the molar ratio (x) of 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) unit to a hydrogen-bonding molecule, 3-n-pentadecyphenol. Moreover, the subunits of SPNFs could transform from short rods to spheres when the interfacial tension between PS core and solvent increased. On the contrary, the SPNFs elongated along the major axis when the interfacial tension decreased. Abstract:Two triarmed organicinorganic hybrid materials based on carboxylic acid-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (APOSS) with/without PS linkers are designed and synthesized (tri-PS-APOSS and tri-APOSS). They can both self-assemble into hollow spherical nanostructures in water/organic mixed solvents, as confirmed by light scattering and TEM techniques, yet they possess completely different mechanisms and driving forces. With the PS linkers, the hybrid forms bilayer vesicles similar to surfactants; while without the PS linkers, the hybrid behaves like hydrophilic macroions and assembles into single-layered, vesicle-like "blackberry"-type structure. Consequently, the trend of the assembly size in response to the change of the solvent polarity is different for the two scenarios. This work shows a simple, universal approach of controlling the mechanism and product of the self-assembly process via minor adjustment of the organic-inorganic hybrid structures.
In Situ Probing of the Surface Hydration of Zwitterionic Polymer Brushes: Structural and Environmental Effects

Abstract:Surface hydration has been proposed as the key nonfouling mechanism of zwitterionic materials. Because these materials have various chemical structures and will be used in complex environments, in situ probing of their surfaces in different aqueous environments is crucial to understanding their surface hydration properties. In this work, the surfaces of three zwitterionic polymer brushes in aqueous solutions with salts or varied pH were probed using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. The SFG spectra indicate the ordering of the polymer brushes in water and the strong hydrogen bonding of the interfacial water molecules. The ordering of water at the surfaces of carboxybetaine polymers changed with pH, but at the sulfobetaine polymer surface, this ordering was not affected by pH. The interfacial ordering of water also decreased when salt ions were associated with the polymers. Ions from different salts had different interfacial binding affinities depending on the ion type and the polymer structure, as deduced from the interfacial water signals. These SFG results reveal important surface hydration properties of zwitterionic polymers that will guide their applications in complex environments.
