Abstract:The rotational spectrum of the isoprene-maleic anhydride complex has been investigated by pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and interpreted with complementary quantum chemical calculations. Four plausible isomers are predicted by theoretical calculation within 12 kJ mol-1, while two isomers with a π–π stacked configuration have been observed in pulsed jet, which are differed in the orientation of the isoprene over maleic anhydride. The relative populations of the two detected isomers was estimated to be NI/NII≈3/1 by performing relative intensity measurements on a set of μc-type transitions. This study shows that, the interaction between the C=C bonding orbital (π) of isoprene and the C=C antibonding orbital (π*) of maleic anhydride is the most contributive in the stabilization of the target complex.

Abstract:The influence of the hydroxymethyl (CH2OH) group on the tetrahydrofuran (THF) ring structure was investigated by disentangling the gas phase conformational landscape of the sugar analogue tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA). By combining rotational spectroscopy (6‐20 GHz) and quantum chemical calculations, transitions corresponding to two stable conformers of THFA and their 13C isotopologues were observed and assigned in the rotational spectrum. The positions of the C atoms were precisely determined to unambiguously distinguish between nearly isoenergetic pairs of conformers that differ in their ring configurations: envelope (E) versus twist (T). The rotational spectrum confirms that the E ring geometry is favoured when the CH2OH fragment lies gauche (‐) to the THF backbone (OCCO ~‐60o) whereas the T form is more stable for the gauche (+) alignment of the substituent (OCCO ~+60o). The observed spectral intensities suggest that conformational relaxation of the THF geometry (E↔T) to the more stable form readily occurs within the pairs of g‐ and g+ conformers which is consistent with the low barriers (1.5‐1.7 kJ mol‐1) for conversion determined via transition state calculations. Insights into the intramolecular hydrogen bonding and other weak interactions stabilizing the lowest energy structures of THFA were derived and rationalized using non‐covalent interaction analyses.

Abstract:Difluorothiophosphoryl isocyanate, F2P(S)NCO was characterized with UV/vis, NMR, IR (gas and Ar-matrix), and Raman (liquid) spectroscopy. Its molecular structure was also established by means of gas electron diffraction (GED) and single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) in the gas phase and solid state, respectively. The analysis of the spectroscopic data and molecular structures is complemented by extensive quantum-chemical calculations. Theoretically, theC(s)symmetricsyn-conformer is predicted to be the most stable conformation. Rotation about the P-N bond requires about 9 kJ mol(-1)and the predicted existence of ananti-conformer is dependent on the quantum-chemical method used. Thissyn-orientation of the isocyanate group is the only one found in the gas phase and contained likewise in the crystal. The overall molecular structure is very similar in gas and solid, despite in the solid state the molecules arrange through intramolecular O...F contacts into layers, which are further interconnected by S...N, S...C and C...F contacts. Additionally, the photodecomposition of F2P(S)NCO to form CO, F2P(S)N, and F2PNCO is observed in the solid Ar-matrix.
A Rotational Spectroscopy Study of Microsolvation Effects on Intramolecular Proton Transfer in Trifluoroacetylacetone-(H2o)1-3.

Abstract:Trifluoroacetylacetone (TFAA) has two enol forms, which can switch to each other via proton transfer. While much attention has been paid to their conformational preferences, the influence of microsolvation on regulating the proton position remains unexplored. Herein, we report the rotational spectra of trifluoroacetylacetone-(water)n (n = 1-3) investigated by chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the 2-8 GHz frequency range. Two conformers were identified for both TFAA-H2O and TFAA-(H2O)2, while only one conformer was characterized for TFAA-(H2O)3. The results indicate that water binding on the CH3 side stabilizes the enolF form, whereas water binding on the CF3 side stabilizes the enolH form. The enolF form predominates over the enolH form in these hydrated complexes, which contrasts with the fact that only enolH exists in isolated TFAA. EnolH becomes preferred only when water inserts itself into the intramolecular hydrogen bond. Instanton theory calculations reveal that the proton transfer reaction is dominated by quantum tunneling at low temperatures, leading to the stable existence of only one enol form in each configuration of the hydrated clusters.

Abstract:The rotational spectrum of a binary molecular cluster consisting of 2,2,4,4-tetrafluoro-1,3-dithietane (C2S2F4) and formaldehyde (H2CO) was studied by means of high-resolution Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. One of the three isomers predicted at the B3LYP-D3(BJ)/def2-TZVP level of theory was successfully detected in the supersonic expansion. Theoretical analyses using the non-covalent interactions and natural bond orbital methods reveal that the observed isomer is primarily stabilized by one C=O⋯S chalcogen bond and two C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds. The distance between the oxygen atom of H2CO and the nearest sulfur atom of C2S2F4 within the observed isomer is 2.9260(1) Å and the angle ∠O⋯S-C is 161.83(1)°. The analysis utilizing the symmetry-adapted perturbation theory approach demonstrates that electrostatic interactions play a significant role in stabilizing the studied complex, with the contribution of dispersion interactions being comparable to that of electrostatic ones.
Conformational Adaptation and Large Amplitude Motions of 1-Phenyl-2,2,2-Trifluoroethanol with Two Water Molecules: A Rotational Spectroscopic and Ab Initio Investigation

Abstract:The 1:2 adduct of 1-phenyl-2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (PhTFE), a chiral fluoroalcohol, with two water molecules (PhTFE∙∙∙2H2O) was investigated via chirped pulse Fourier-transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. A systematic search of the PhTFE∙∙∙2H2O conformational landscape identified 38 stable minima at the B3LYP-D3BJ/def2-TZVPPD level of theory, 27 of which are within an energy window of 10 kJ mol-1 after applying zero-point energy corrections. Rotational spectra of a single PhTFE∙∙∙2H2O conformer along with eight deuterated and three oxygen-18 isotopologues were assigned. Interestingly, the observed PhTFE∙∙∙2H2O conformer contains PhTFE II, the second most stable monomer conformer, and the most stable PhTFE I dihydrate is ca. 4 kJ mol-1 higher in energy. In contrast, PhTFE I∙∙∙H2O was identified experimentally and theoretically as the most stable 1:1 conformer. Furthermore, the observed dihydrate structure experiences large amplitude motions connecting three theoretical minima which differ only in which water oxygen lone pairs are involved in the hydrogen-bonds, i.e., the free OH pointing directions. Additionally, the ortho and para-H2O tunnelling splittings were detected and attributed to the interchange water hydrogen atoms which interact with the aromatic part of PhTFE but not for the water interacting with PhTFE hydroxy group. Extensive theoretical modelling was carried out to gain insight into the associated large amplitude motions including tunnelling, supported by the experimental isotopic and tunnelling splitting data.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study on the conformational behavior of diversely substituted 4‐fluorotetrahydrothiopyran derivatives. Through quantum chemical simulations including DFT as well as NBO and NPA analysis, we elucidate the pivotal role of electrostatic interactions, occasionally complemented by hyperconjugative interactions, in stabilizing axial fluorine conformers. Less polar conformers were occasionally obtained, attributed to the interplay of electrostatic and hyperconjugative interactions. Experimental validation through NMR spectroscopy aligns with the computational analysis, thus providing a coherent understanding of the structural dynamics of these compounds.

Abstract:Eighteen possible isomers Of C-78(CH2)(2) were investigated by the R 1)0 method. It was indicated that the most stable isomer was 42,43,62,63-C-78(CH2)(2), where the -CH2 groups were added to the 6/6 bonds located at the same hexagon passed by the longest axis of C-78 (C-2v), to form cyclopropane structures. Based on the most stable four geometries of C-78(CH2)(2) optimized at B3LYP/3-21G level, the first absorptions in the electronic spectra calculated with the INDO/CIS method and the IR frequencies of the C--C bonds on the carbon cage computed using the AM I method were blue-shifted compared with those of C-78 (C-2v) because of the bigger LUMO-HOMO energy gap and the less conjugated carbon cage after the addition. The chemical shifts of C-13 NMR for the carbon atoms on the added bonds calculated at B3LYP/3-21G level were moved upfield thanks to the conversion from sp(2)-C to SP3-C.
Conformational stability, barriers to internal rotation, vibrational assignment, and RHF/STO-3G* calculations of 2-bromopropenoyl fluoride

Abstract:The far-infrared spectrum of gaseous 2-bromopropenoyl fluoride, CH2CBrCFO, has been recorded at a resolution of 0.10 cm-1 in the region 350-35 cm-1. The fundamental asymmetric torsional frequencies of the more stable s-trans (two double bonds oriented trans to one another) and the high-energy s-cis conformations have been observed at 61.90 and 44.27 cm-1, respectively, each with several excited states appearing at low frequencies. From these data, the asymmetric torsional potential function governing internal rotation about the C-C bond has been determined. The potential coefficients are V1 = -17 +/- 12, V2 = 1506 +/- 48, V3 = 321 +/- 19, V4 = -43 +/- 14, and V5 = -48 +/- 7 cm-1. The s-trans-s-cis and s-cis-s-trans barriers have been determined to be 1684 +/- 35 and 1428 +/- 21 cm-1, respectively, with an energy difference between the conformations of 256 +/- 79 cm-1 (732 +/- 226 cal/mol). From studies of the Raman spectrum at variable temperatures, the conformational enthalpy difference has been determined to be 247 +/- 60 cm-1 (706 +/- 172 cal/mol) and 340 +/- 22 cm-1 (972 +/- 63 cal/mol) for the gas and liquid, respectively. A complete assignment of the vibrational fundamentals observed from the infrared spectra (3500-50 cm-1) of the gas and solid and the Raman spectra (3200-10 cm-1) of all three physical states is proposed. All of these data are compared to the corresponding quantities obtained from ab initio Hartree-Fock gradient calculations employing the STO-3G* basis set. The results are discussed and compared with the corresponding quantities obtained for some similar molecules.

Abstract:Tetrahydrofuran (THF) has garnered significant attention due to its pivotal role in biological and chemical processes. The diverse array of conformations exhibited by THF profoundly impacts its reactivity and interactions with other molecules. Understanding these conformational preferences is crucial for comprehending its molecular behavior. In this study, we utilize infrared (IR) resonant vacuum ultraviolet photoionization/mass-analyzed threshold ionization (VUV-PI/MATI) mass spectroscopies to capture distinctive vibrational spectra of individual conformers, namely, “twisted” and “bent,” within THF. Our conformer-specific vibrational spectra provide valuable insights into the relative populations of these two conformers. The analysis reveals that the twisted (C2) conformer is more stable than the bent (CS) conformer by 17 ± 15 cm−1. By precisely tuning the VUV photon energy to coincide with vibrational excitation via IR absorption, we selectively ionize specific conformers, yielding two-photon IR + VUV-PI/MATI spectra corresponding to the twisted and bent conformers. This investigation conclusively affirms that both the twisted and bent conformers coexist in the neutral state, while only the twisted conformer exists in the cationic state. These findings not only bridge gaps in existing knowledge but also provide profound insights into the behavior of this pivotal molecule in the realms of biology and medicine.

Abstract:We present a rotational‐computational investigation of the aromatic mercaptan 2‐phenylethanethiol, addressing its potential energy surface, conformational equilibrium, internal dynamics and intramolecular interactions. The experiment used broadband chirped‐pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in a supersonic jet expansion, recording the rotational spectrum in the 2‐8 GHz frequency region. Two different conformers were detected in the spectrum. The most intense transitions correspond to a skew (gauche‐gauche) conformation, identified as the global minimum. The spectra of ten different isotopologues were assigned for this species, leading to accurate effective and substitution structures. The weaker spectrum presents small tunnelling doublings caused by the torsional motion of the thiol group, which are only compatible with an antiperiplanar skeleton and a gauche thiol. The larger stability of the global minimum is attributed to an intramolecular S‐H···π weak hydrogen bond. A comparison of the intramolecular interactions in the title molecule and 2‐phenylethanol, similarly stabilized by a O‐H···π hydrogen bond, shows the different strength of these interactions. Density functional (B3LYP‐D3, B2PLYP‐D3) and ab initio (MP2) calculations were conducted for the molecule.

Abstract:The microwave spectrum of 1-fiuoro-2-methylpropane (isobutyl fluoride), (CH3)CHGH2, has been investigated in the region from 18.0 to 38.5 GHz. The a-type R-branch transitions have been assigned on the basis of the rigid rotor model. For the ground vibrational state the rotational constants were found to be A = 7631.03±0.14, B = 3480.96±0.01, and C=2633.38±0.01 MHz. The dipole moment components were determined from the Stark effect to be |μa| = 1.702±0.002, |μb| = 0.540|+-0.045, |μc| = 0.296±0.007, and |μt| = 1.810±0.003 D. These data clearly indicate that the assigned microwave spectrum is that of the gauche conformer. The IR (3500–40 cm−1) and Raman (3500–20 cm−1) spectra of the gas and solid have been recorded. Additionally, the Raman spectrum of the liquid has been recorded and qualitative depolarization values have been obtained. Both the trans and gauche conformers have been identified in the vibrational spectrum of the fluid phases. From temperature studies of the Raman spectra of the gas and liquid, the enthalpy differences between the trans and gauche conformers were determined to be 154±38 cm−1 (440±109cal/mol) and 157±19 cm−1 (449±54cal/mol), respectively, with the gauche conformer being thermodynamically preferred in both phases. Upon crystallization only the gauche conformer remains in the solid state. Complete equilibrium geometries have been determined for both rotamers by ab initio Hartree-Fock gradient calculations employing RHF/3-21G, RHF/6-31G* and MP2/6-31G* basis sets. The normal modes and potential surface calculations have been carried out employing the RHF/6-31G* basis set. These results are discussed and compared to those obtained for some similar molecules.

Abstract:Nuclear spin isomers of molecules play a pivotal role in our understanding of quantum mechanics and can have significant implications for various fields. In this work, we report the isolation and characterization of stable nuclear spin isomers as well as conformational isomers of a reactive compound, namely carbonyl diisothiocyanate. It can exist as three rotational conformers, two of which, the syn-syn and syn-anti, were observed in a pulsed supersonic jet by chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the 2-12 GHz frequency region. The rotational spectra of two distinct nuclear spin isomers of syn-syn-carbonyl diisothiocyanate, ortho and para, were recorded and analyzed. Experimental molecular rotational parameters for the identified rotational and nuclear spin isomers were determined, including rotational constants, centrifugal distortion constants, and nuclear quadrupole coupling constants. The two nuclear spin isomers are distinguished by unique hyperfine splitting signatures in their rotational spectra as an outcome of their different nuclear spin states. The relative abundances of the two observed conformers in the gas phase were estimated from the intensity of their rotational transitions. Following detection of singly substituted rare isotopologues of the syn-syn conformer, a partial substitution (rs) structure was determined.

New Diagnostic of the Most Populated Conformer of Tetrahydrofuran in the Gas Phase.

Abstract:The most populated conformer of tetrahydrofuran (C(4)H(8)O) has been diagnosed as the Cs conformer in the present study, jointly using experimental electron momentum spectroscopy (EMS) and quantum mechanics. Our B3LYP/6-311++G** model indicates that the C1 conformation, which is one of the three possible conformations of tetrahydrofuran produced by pseudorotation in the gas phase, is a transition state due to its imaginary frequencies, in agreement with the prediction from a recent ab initio MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ study (J. Chem. Phys. 2005, 122, 204303). The study has identified the fingerprint of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the C(s) (12a') conformer as the most populated conformer. The identification of the C(s) structure, therefore, leads to the orbital-based assignment of the ionization binding energy spectra of tetrahydrofuran for the first time, on the basis of the outer valence Green function OVGF/6-31G* model and the density functional theory (DFT) SAOP/ET-PVQZ model. The present study explores an innovative approach to study molecular stabilities. It also indicates that energetic properties are not always the most appropriate means to study conformer-rich biological systems.

Abstract:The complexes of thiazole with CF4 and SF6 have been investigated by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. One rotational spectrum was observed for the thiazole-CF4 complex. Experiments and theoretical computations confirmed that the observed structure of thiazole-CF4 is primarily formed by a N···CCF4 interaction with the C atom of CF4 located in the plane of the thiazole ring. The rotational transitions of thiazole-CF4 exhibit A/E torsional splitting induced by the internal rotation of the -CF3 top. The potential barrier of the -CF3 internal rotation is 0.2411(1) kJ mol−1, consistent with the calculated value (∼ 0.3 kJ mol−1). For the thiazole-SF6 complex, one conformer with SF6 sitting above the thiazole ring was detected. The observed structure of thiazole-SF6 is mainly stabilized by van der Waals interactions. The energy decomposition analysis reveals that the electrostatics and dispersion are the dominant attractive contribution to the formation of thiazole-CF4 and thiazole-SF6 dimers whereas the weight of dispersion term becomes more significant in the thiazole-SF6 complex comparing to that of thiazole-CF4.

Abstract:The conformational equilibria of cyclohexyl isothiocyanate and its complex with water were studied by microwave spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations. For the bare cyclohexyl isothiocyanate, the rotational spectra of the two conformers, namely a-trans and e-trans, were measured and analyzed. Additional mono-substituted isotopologues of two 13C and one 34S of a-trans and e-trans were also measured, which result in an accurate structural determination of the two conformers. For the binary complex with water, the rotational spectra were measured for the monohydrates of both a-trans and e-trans conformers. Water isotopologues were also detected for the monohydrates. All the measured rotational spectra show 14N quadrupole coupling hyperfine structures. Water molecule prefers linking to the isothiocyanate group through a OwH⋯S hydrogen bond and forming two CH⋯Ow hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atom of water acting as a proton acceptor. Abstract:In the title compound, C21H27BF2N2O4, a highly fluorescent boron-dipyrromethene dye, the methyl-propionate moieties have different conformations. In the crystal, weak C-H⋯F and C-H⋯O inter-actions link the mol-ecules. Some optical properties are presented.

Abstract:X-ray analysis has revealed that N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-ethylenediamine 1 form donor–acceptor complex 3 with 1-bromo-2-iodo-tetrafluoroethane 2 , in which the N X (X = Br, I) distances are longer than the average covalent bond length between X and N, but are also definitively shorter than the sum of the corresponding van der Waals radii of X and N, thus that indicating weak interactions between the nitrogen and bromine or iodine atoms. In our experimental section, a valuable method for recrystallization and collect X-ray data from crystals that easily exhibit decay and can be cracked is reported.

Abstract:Rotational spectra of the 4-fluoroacetophenone monomer and its monohydrate were investigated by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy complemented with quantum chemical calculations. One conformer of 4-fluoroacetophenone and two isomers of 4-fluoroacetophenone–H 2 O have been observed in the pulsed jets. The observation of all mono-substituted 13 C isotopologues in natural abundance allows an accurate structural determination of the 4-fluoroacetophenone monomer. Both detected isomers of 4-fluoroacetophenone–H 2 O are stabilized by a dominant O–H⋯O and a secondary C–H⋯O hydrogen bond. The fluorination effects on the geometries, intermolecular non-covalent interactions and V 3 barrier of the methyl internal rotation were analysed. The relative population ratio of the two observed isomers for 4-fluoroacetophenone–H 2 O was also estimated to be N I / N II ≈ 7/1.
