Abstract:Purpose: Review different methods in medical image registration.Method: Parametric and non-parametric registration methods. Result: Various registration methods and applications are presented. Conclusion: Different registration methods fit to different kinds of medical images and result different applications in medical field. In medical field, researchers need to combine and compare the information given by functional and anatomical images. For the reason, image registration which can map points from one image to homologous points on an object in the second image is one of the fundamental tasks in image processing. Different numerical methods are introduced into registration due to the different images taken from different perspectives, times and devices. In this paper, we present an overview of recent methods for image registration in medical field. We start by the goal of image registration and introduce the framework of a registration process. The registration methods under review are classified into two categories: parametric image registration and non-parametric image registration. Typical methods in each category are presented. In each case, we provide the readers with general background information and properties or explanation of how these methods work.

Abstract:Objective To realize and analyze the registration of multimodality and non-rigid images by Insight Toolkit(ITK).Methods Based on basic frame of medical image registration and non-rigid registration of multi-mode medical image,the functions of all modules in the registration were studied.Also,it's introduced how the modules worked in the registration frame.The normalized mutual information model was integrated with improved Partial Volume Interpolation model,and Blackman-Harris Window kernel function was used for multimodality image registration.The model of Free-Form Deformation(FDD) based on B-spline and the optimizer named Limited memory(LBFGS) were used to accommodate non-rigid image transformation.Results The registration of liver MR and CT images was tested by the ITK.Conclusion Experimental data shows the validity of the proposed metho.

Abstract:To overcome the limitation of medical image registration introduced by a single kind of feature, an image registration method using multi-features is proposed in the paper. In the method, the operator exactly extracts the features from the images with semi-automatic extraction method. The extracted curve-pairs are modeled by non-uniform cubic B-splines so that they have the same parameter space. The mechanism of non-uniform subdivision of curves ensures that the discrete points can match the original curve as close as possible and fulfill the requirement of image registration. The transformation function is solved iteratively by continuously improving the regions of maximum difference between two curves and adding constraint conditions. Experimental results show that, by taking the advantages in the registration of the accuracy based-on points and the robustness based-on curves, our algorithm is an effective medical image registration algorithm.

Abstract:Due to the limitation of medical image registration introduced by one kind of feature,a medical image elastic registration method using contour and feature points is proposed.Feature points can be extracted with semi-automatic method,which can not only ensure the accuracy of the extraction but also avoid the complicated process of building corresponding relationship of feature points.On the basis of keeping shape of the contour,contour linearization is employed to reduce key points in the extracted contour,which improves the computation efficiency.The sum of the distances between feature points and the distances between contours is chosen as the criterion of image registration.The registration transformation is resolved iteratively by the frame of ICP algorithm.The analysis of the choice of cost function and the experimental comparison with other methods using real images demonstrate that the results of the proposed algorithm are better than those of other methods that only use the point or the contour.The presented method can not only register the structure of images(contour) but also align the interested anatomic positions(feature points),which represents the exact difference between images,and is a fast and accurate medical image registration algorithm.

Abstract:Medical image registration has become pivotal in recent years with the integration of various imaging modalities like X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans, enabling comprehensive analysis and diagnosis of biological structures. This paper provides a comprehensive review of registration techniques for medical images, with an in-depth focus on 2D-2D image registration methods. While 3D registration is briefly touched upon, the primary emphasis remains on 2D techniques and their applications. This review covers registration techniques for diverse modalities, including unimodal, multimodal, interpatient, and intra-patient. The paper explores the challenges encountered in medical image registration, including geometric distortion, differences in image properties, outliers, and optimization convergence, and discusses their impact on registration accuracy and reliability. Strategies for addressing these challenges are highlighted, emphasizing the need for continual innovation and refinement of techniques to enhance the accuracy and reliability of medical image registration systems. The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of accurate medical image registration in improving diagnosis.

Abstract:Deep learning technologies have dramatically reshaped the field of medical image registration over the past decade. The initial developments, such as regression-based and U-Net-based networks, established the foundation for deep learning in image registration. Subsequent progress has been made in various aspects of deep learning-based registration, including similarity measures, deformation regularizations, network architectures, and uncertainty estimation. These advancements have not only enriched the field of image registration but have also facilitated its application in a wide range of tasks, including atlas construction, multi-atlas segmentation, motion estimation, and 2D-3D registration. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of the most recent advancements in deep learning-based image registration. We begin with a concise introduction to the core concepts of deep learning-based image registration. Then, we delve into innovative network architectures, loss functions specific to registration, and methods for estimating registration uncertainty. Additionally, this paper explores appropriate evaluation metrics for assessing the performance of deep learning models in registration tasks. Finally, we highlight the practical applications of these novel techniques in medical imaging and discuss the future prospects of deep learning-based image registration.

Abstract:Medical image registration plays a dominant role in medical image analysis and clinical research. In this paper, we present a new coarse-to-fine method based on pulse-coupled neural networks (PCNNs) and mutual information (MI). In the coarse-registration process, we use the PCNN-clusters' invariant characteristics of translation, rotation and distortion to get the coarse parameters. And the parameters of the PCNN model are optimized by ant colony optimization algorithm. In the fine-registration process, the coarse parameters provide a near-optimal initial solution. Based on this, the fine-tuning process is implemented by mutual information using the particle swarm optimization algorithm to search the optimal parameters. For the purpose of proving the proposed method can deal with medical image registration automatically, the experiments are carried out on MR and CT images. The comparative experiments on MI-based and SIFT-based methods for medical image registration show that the proposed method achieves higher performance in accuracy.

Abstract:Medical image registration is vital for disease diagnosis and treatment with its ability to merge diverse information of images, which may be captured under different times, angles, or modalities. Although several surveys have reviewed the development of medical image registration, these surveys have not systematically summarized methodologies of existing medical image registration methods. To this end, we provide a comprehensive review of these methods from traditional and deep learning-based directions, aiming to help audiences understand the development of medical image registration quickly. In particular, we review recent advances in retinal image registration at the end of each section, which has not attracted much attention. Additionally, we also discuss the current challenges of retinal image registration and provide insights and prospects for future research.

Abstract:Image registration (IR) is a process that deforms images to align them with respect to a reference space, making it easier for medical practitioners to examine various medical images in a standardized reference frame, such as having the same rotation and scale. This document introduces image registration using a simple numeric example. It provides a definition of image registration along with a space-oriented symbolic representation. This review covers various aspects of image transformations, including affine, deformable, invertible, and bidirectional transformations, as well as medical image registration algorithms such as Voxelmorph, Demons, SyN, Iterative Closest Point, and SynthMorph. It also explores atlas-based registration and multistage image registration techniques, including coarse-fine and pyramid approaches. Furthermore, this survey paper discusses medical image registration taxonomies, datasets, evaluation measures, such as correlation-based metrics, segmentation-based metrics, processing time, and model size. It also explores applications in image-guided surgery, motion tracking, and tumor diagnosis. Finally, the document addresses future research directions, including the further development of transformers.

Abstract:Image registration is a critical component in the applications of various medical image analyses. In recent years, there has been a tremendous surge in the development of deep learning (DL)-based medical image registration models. This paper provides a comprehensive review of medical image registration. Firstly, a discussion is provided for supervised registration categories, for example, fully supervised, dual supervised, and weakly supervised registration. Next, similarity-based as well as generative adversarial network (GAN)-based registration are presented as part of unsupervised registration. Deep iterative registration is then described with emphasis on deep similarity-based and reinforcement learning-based registration. Moreover, the application areas of medical image registration are reviewed. This review focuses on monomodal and multimodal registration and associated imaging, for instance, X-ray, CT scan, ultrasound, and MRI. The existing challenges are highlighted in this review, where it is shown that a major challenge is the absence of a training dataset with known transformations. Finally, a discussion is provided on the promising future research areas in the field of DL-based medical image registration.

Abstract:In this paper,a new method based on mutual information,wavelet decomposition,and hybrid optimization is proposed for medical image registration.Two kinds of optimization were performed.One is global optimization using simulate anneal algorithm under the lower resolution rate and the other is to employ the Powell algorithm under higher resolution rate.Results show that a new method is suitable to medical image registration and has a good global optimization and runtime performance.

Abstract:Image registration based on multi-resolution analysis is an important method to improve the efficiency of algorithms.In this paper,an image registration frame based on multi-resolution,multi-similarity function,multi-optimization method is presented.A new solution is proposed to be applied to medical image registration,and is compared with another one based on mutual information.Results of experiments show that the new method using both mean Hausdorff distance and mutual information as similarity measures is excellent in synthesized performance of runtime and precision.

Abstract:This paper presents a review of deep learning (DL) based medical image registration methods. We summarized the latest developments and applications of DL-based registration methods in the medical field. These methods were classified into seven categories according to their methods, functions and popularity. A detailed review of each category was presented, highlighting important contributions and identifying specific challenges. A short assessment was presented following the detailed review of each category to summarize its achievements and future potentials. We provided a comprehensive comparison among DL-based methods for lung and brain deformable registration using benchmark datasets. Lastly, we analyzed the statistics of all the cited works from various aspects, revealing the popularity and future trend of development in medical image registration using deep learning.
A Mixed-Type Registration Approach in Medical Image Processing

Abstract:Medical image registration is a critical step in medical image processing. In this paper, a mixed-type image registration approach is presented, which combines the segmentation-based and voxel-based registration. Firstly, the experimental images are preprocessed, including digital imaging and communication of medicine (DICOM) format conversion, denoising, and segmentation. Then mutual information (MI) as a similarity measure is used when the two images matched, and finally the optimal image transform is chosen by using optimization strategies. Experimental results show that the novel approach has low computational complexity, fast speed, and high accuracy. Moreover, it can fully take advantage of both registration approaches based on segmentation and voxel similarity, which improves the accuracy and speed of the registration effectively.

Abstract:Medical image registration is widely used in clinical diagnosis, treatment, quality assurance and it's also the prerequisite to realize the fusion and reconstruction. This paper presents an improved medical image registration algorithm based on mutual information. First of all, B-spline gradient operator is adopted to detect edges of the reference image and the floating image and then get binarization image respectively. Next, in order to obtain the centroid coordinates, the moments of the binarization image is calculated. According to the edge detection operator, the rotation angle of the reference image and floating image are obtained. In this paper, improved mutual information (IMI) is used as a measure of similarity between the reference and floating images. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has the advantages of low computational complexity and high accuracy, and overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional mutual information easily falling into local optimum.
