Abstract:Ionic liquids(ILs) are non-volatile,non-flammable and easy-to-recycle organic salts and therefore are viewed as potential replacements of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) and used as green solvents and efficient reaction media to reduce/eliminate environmental problems in chemistry and process industries.In recent years,ILs have been successful used in polymerization reactions not only to diminish the problems resulted from VOCs but also to recycle catalysts and purify polymeric products,to more efficiently control polymerization process and the structure and properties of resultant polymers,and even to directly catalyze polymerizations.This article reviews recent advances in polymerization conducted in ionic liquid media.

Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) with remarkable performance offer opportunities to advance the green and low-carbon chemical processes. Much work is focused on building innovative theory and knowledge framework to unravel the ILs' nature, yet there is also an increasing trend to utilize ILs in the rapidly emerging fields. Aiming to provide an overview regarding the recent advances and challenges of ILs in the development of green processes for renewable resources, this review highlights the properties and functions of ILs as electrolyte additives, modifiers, exfoliation agents, nucleation substrates, IL gating, tunable solvents, versatile carriers or biosensor components in three representative and revolutionary production processes, including new energy, electronic information materials, and biotechnologies. The innovative applications of ILs demonstrate their potential to create the landscape of low-carbon, high-end and smart technologies.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs), often known as green designer solvents, have demonstrated immense application potential in numerous scientific and technological domains. ILs possess high boiling point and low volatility that make them suitable environmentally benign candidates for many potential applications. The more important aspect associated with ILs is that their physicochemical properties can be effectively changed for desired applications just by tuning the structure of the cationic and/or anionic part of ILs. Furthermore, these eco-friendly designer materials can function as electrolytes or solvents depending on the application. Owing to the distinctive properties such as low volatility, high thermal and electrochemical stability, and better ionic conductivity, ILs are nowadays immensely used in a variety of energy applications, particularly in the development of green and sustainable energy storage and conversion devices. Suitable ILs are designed for specific purposes to be used as electrolytes and/or solvents for fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors (SCs), and solar cells. Herein, we have highlighted the utilization of ILs as unique green designer materials in Li-batteries, fuel cells, SCs, and solar cells. This review will enlighten the promising prospects of these unique, environmentally sustainable materials for next-generation green energy conversion and storage devices. Ionic liquids have much to offer in the field of energy sciences regarding fixing some of the world's most serious issues. However, most of the discoveries discussed in this review article are still at the laboratory research scale for further development. This review article will inspire researchers and readers about how ILs can be effectively applied in energy sectors for various applications as mentioned above.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (IL) are widely used in electrochemistry due to their excellent properties such as good ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical potential window, high viscosity, high thermal stability, wide liquid range and tunable solvent properties. In electrochemistry, the performance of an electrochemical system is dependent on the properties of the interface at the IL/electrode. This review presents the surface electrochemistry in ILs, and the interfacial structures of IL/electrode and heterogeneous electron-transfer kinetics are detailed. Finally, the updated researches on the electrochemical applications of ILs such as electrode deposition, electrosynthesis, electrocatalysis, electrochemical biosensing, electrochemical capacitor and lithium batteries are demonstrated.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are salts in the liquid state at ambient temperature, which are nonvolatile, nonflammable with high thermal stability and dissolve easily for a wide range of inorganic and organic materials. As a kind of potential green solvent, they show high efficiency and selectivity in the field of separation research, especially in instrumental analysis. Thus far, ILs have been successfully applied by many related researchers in high-performance liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis as chromatographic stationary phases, mobile phase additives or electroosmotic flow modifiers. This paper provides a detailed review of these applications in the study of natural products, foods, drugs and other fine chemicals. Furthermore, the prospects of ILs in liquid chromatographic and electrodriven techniques are discussed.

Abstract:Heterogeneous systems containing ionic liquids (ILs) with gases and solvents extend the acpplications of ILs in absorption, extraction and heterogeneous catalysis. In recent years, the surface/interfacial properties and surface/interfacial structures of ionic liquids have been widely studied, because they are important due to their remarkable effects on heterogeneous reactions and separation efficiency. In this article, the surface/interfacial tension, as well as the surface/interfacial structures of ILs and their mixtures with water and organic solvents are summarized. The research methods, objectives and results are introduced. The relationship between surface/interfacial tension and surface/interfacial structures is elucidated. Finally, the exiting problems and development prospects of the studies on surface/interfacial properties and surface/interfacial structures of ILs are discussed.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are solvents with salt structures. Typically, they contain organic cations (ammonium, imidazolium, pyridinium, piperidinium or pyrrolidinium), and halogen, fluorinated or organic anions. While ILs are considered to be environmentally-friendly compounds, only a few reasons support this claim. This is because of high thermal stability, and negligible pressure at room temperature which makes them non-volatile, therefore preventing the release of ILs into the atmosphere. The expansion of the range of applications of ILs in many chemical industry fields has led to a growing threat of contamination of the aquatic and terrestrial environments by these compounds. As the possibility of the release of ILs into the environment s grow systematically, there is an increasing and urgent obligation to determine their toxic and antimicrobial influence on the environment. Many bioassays were carried out to evaluate the (eco)toxicity and biodegradability of ILs. Most of them have questioned their “green” features as ILs turned out to be toxic towards organisms from varied trophic levels. Therefore, there is a need for a new biodegradable, less toxic “greener” ILs. This review presents the potential risks to the environment linked to the application of ILs. These are the following: cytotoxicity evaluated by the use of human cells, toxicity manifesting in aqueous and terrestrial environments. The studies proving the relation between structures versus toxicity for ILs with special emphasis on directions suitable for designing safer ILs synthesized from renewable sources are also presented. The representants of a new generation of easily biodegradable ILs derivatives of amino acids, sugars, choline, and bicyclic monoterpene moiety are collected. Some benefits of using ILs in medicine, agriculture, and the bio-processing industry are also presented.

Abstract:Common reaction media, volatile organic solvents (VOS), contribute significantly to air pollution and pose challenges in separation and recycling processes. As environmental awareness grows, researchers are focusing on developing alternative, eco-friendly solvent systems to replace these traditional VOS. Ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged as promising "green" solvents due to their extremely low vapor pressure and high thermal stability, providing advantages in containment, product recovery, and recyclability. ILs exhibit varying stability to moisture and miscibility with molecular liquids, and their properties like density, melting point, and viscosity can be tailored by selecting appropriate cation and/or anion components. Beyond their role in chemical reactions, ILs find applications in separations, extractions, electroanalytical processes, and chemical sensing. The high ionic character of ILs significantly enhances reaction rates in various chemical processes. These versatile features position ILs as potential alternatives to VOS in a wide range of industrial applications. Moreover, their use as industrial solvents can have economic, social, and ecological impacts by influencing human health and environmental factors. In summary, the exploration of ILs as green solvents represents a crucial step towards addressing environmental concerns associated with traditional volatile organic solvents in industrial chemical processes.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs), composed of bulky organic cations and versatile anions, have sustainably found widespread utilizations in promising energy-storage systems. Supercapacitors, as competitive high-power devices, have drawn tremendous attention due to high-rate energy harvesting and long-term durability. The electric energy of supercapacitors is stored through the ion dynamics and physicochemical interactions at the electrolyte/electrode interface. To satisfy the high-energy request for building better supercapacitors, ILs stand out by virtue of the characteristic negligible vapor pressure and molecular designability, coupled with several fascinating features including a highly ionized environment, good thermal/chemical stability, and universal solubility/affinity. This mini-review offers an overview of recent IL utilizations in both electrolyte exploitation and electrode synthesis for supercapacitors. On the role of IL-based electrolyte components, three representative types (i.e., neat IL electrolytes, IL mixtures, and IL (quasi-)solid-state electrolytes) are applied to put aside the water-splitting roadblock, thus affording high charge storage under wide electrochemical stability potentials. On the other hand, the involvement of ILs in material science is described as microstructure-directing agents, heteroatom dopants, and carbon precursors, respectively, for the purpose of boosting the interfacial physicochemical interactions toward superior electrode capacitances. Finally, current challenges and future outlooks associated with IL media/materials are summarized for next-generation supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:The unique properties of ionic liquids (ILs), such as structural tunability, good solubility, chemical/thermal stability, favorable biocompatibility, and simplicity of preparation, have led to a wide range of applications in the pharmaceutical and biomedical fields. ILs can not only speed up the chemical reaction process, improve the yield, and reduce environmental pollution but also improve many problems in the field of medicine, such as the poor drug solubility, product crystal instability, poor biological activity, and low drug delivery efficiency. This paper presents a systematic and concise analysis of the recent advancements and further applications of ILs in the pharmaceutical field from the aspects of drug synthesis, drug analysis, drug solubilization, and drug crystal engineering. Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are next generation solvents which are synthesized by organic salts, possess negligible vapour pressure and have low flammability. They possess high thermal and electrochemical stability, can be reused for multiple cycles, and its properties can be tuned according to the components used in its synthesis. Hence, ILs are considered to be potential alternatives for the conventional organic solvents for numerous applications such as environmental remediation, nanoparticles synthesis, as catalysts in various chemical reactions, as solvents for the extraction of biomolecules from recalcitrant lignocellulosic biomass, etc. In this review article, the holistic approach of ILs starting from various techniques adopted for its synthesis along with its critical review has been discussed followed by detailed discussion on the mechanism involved for the remediation of environmental pollutants using ILs. Further, in depth documentation of various environmental pollutants remediated till date using ILs has been done. One of the major drawbacks of solvents application is the reusability factor, and hence in this review article, techniques adopted to recycle/reuse of ILs has been discussed. Further, the adverse effect of using ILs for environmental remediation has been comprehensively discussed to present a holistic view. Future studies should focus on synthesis of environment friendly ILs and their field-scale applications for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs), entirely composed of cations and anions, are liquid solvents at room temperature. They are interesting due to their low vapor pressure, high polarity and thermostability, and also for the possibility to fine-tune their physicochemical properties through modification of the chemical structures of their cations or anions. In recent years, ILs have been widely used in biotechnological fields involving whole-cell biotransformations of biodiesel or biomass, and organic compound synthesis with cells. Research studies in these fields have increased from the past decades and compared to the typical solvents, ILs are the most promising alternative solvents for cell biotransformations. However, there are increasing limitations and new challenges in whole-cell biotransformations with ILs. There is little understanding of the mechanisms of ILs' interactions with cells, and much remains to be clarified. Further investigations are required to overcome the drawbacks of their applications and to broaden their application spectrum. This work mainly reviews the applications of ILs in whole-cell biotransformations, and the possible mechanisms of ILs in microbial cell biotransformation are proposed and discussed.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs), due to their inherent structural tunability, outstanding miscibility behavior, and excellent electrochemical properties, have attracted significant research attention in the biomedical field. As the application of ILs in biomedicine is a rapidly emerging field, there is still a need for systematic analyses and summaries to further advance their development. This review presents a comprehensive survey on the utilization of ILs in the biomedical field. It specifically emphasizes the diverse structures and properties of ILs with their relevance in various biomedical applications. Subsequently, we summarize the mechanisms of ILs as potential drug candidates, exploring their effects on various organisms ranging from cell membranes to organelles, proteins, and nucleic acids. Furthermore, the application of ILs as extractants and catalysts in pharmaceutical engineering is introduced. In addition, we thoroughly review and analyze the applications of ILs in disease diagnosis and delivery systems. By offering an extensive analysis of recent research, our objective is to inspire new ideas and pathways for the design of innovative biomedical technologies based on ILs.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have received widespread attention in the field of green desulfurization in the past few years due to their excellent desulfurization ability and infinite potential for designability. However, the additional costs and environmental issues faced when dealing with ILs with degraded desulfurization performance have limited their practical applications. To solve the reuse problem of degraded ILs, this study analyzed the feasibility of using ILs as extraction desulfurizers and corrosion inhibitors in refineries using methods such as liquid chromatography, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, quantum chemistry, and molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicated that 1-hydroxyethyl-3-hexylimidazolium bromide gave a great thiophene desulfurization efficiency of 50.82% and an excellent corrosion inhibition efficiency of 98.29%. After undertaking desulfurization tasks, the IL could continue to act as an interface-type inhibitor to adsorb on the Q235 surfaces, hindering aqueous electrolyte attack and thus inhibiting the corrosion rate of refining equipment. Its adsorption obeyed the Langmuir isotherm. Improving the electron donating ability, side chain interaction, imidazolium ring, and thiophene interaction, as well as the adsorption of thiophene S atoms on long side chains of IL cations, while suppressing the interaction between the imidazolium ring and n-heptane and the adsorption of n-heptane on the long side chains, could further increase the corrosion inhibition and desulfurization performance of ILs. Using ILs as extraction desulfurizers and corrosion inhibitors is expected to solve environmental and safety issues in the refining process and reduce the adverse effects of high prices on the practical application of ILs.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, ionic liquids (ILs) have had a wide range and cutting-edge impact, generating promising science and technologies and have also expanded exponentially in terms of their publications. They have been utilized for both academic and industrial applications. They are potential candidates for solving some of the major issues society is currently faced with by emerging as a clean, efficient, and eco-friendly alternative resource of volatile organic solvents along with many more significant benefits due to their unique thermal, physical, chemical and biological properties. Furthermore, these properties could be modified depending on their application by altering the combination of cations and anions. However, their synthesis and purification require standard synthesis methods to certify their consistent reproducibility. The yields from ILs at large scales for the industrial applications along with their synthesis, toxicity and environmentally friendly nature have become the main concerns. The aim of this review is to investigate the current literature that describes the cutting-edge-knowledge regarding the synthesis of various classes of homogeneous (task specific-ILs, chiral-ILs, switchable polarity solvent ILs, bio-ILs, poly-ILs, energetic-ILs and many more) and heterogeneous (supported-ILs) ILs. Fundamental aspects of ILs such as the green aspects, environmental impacts and purity of ILs are also discussed. The potential applications of ILs in electro-chemistry, solvent, engineering, catalysis, biological aid, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry and many more are briefly explained. In addition, the explanations based on purifications and recovery of ILs by using single or combined methods along with their physico-chemical properties were also reviewed. Moreover, the comprehensive study summarizes the latest progress on assorted classes of ILs along with discussing their prospective applications in the first half. The synthesis of homo/heterogeneous ILs is thoroughly elaborated in the second half. Finally, the future prospective medical applications of ILs are also mentioned.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) were initially hailed as a green alternative to traditional solvents because of their almost non-existent vapor pressure as ecological replacement of most common volatile solvents in industrial processes for their damaging effects on the environment. It is common knowledge that they are not as green as desired, and more thought must be put into the biological consequences of their industrial use. Still, compared to the amount of research studying their physicochemical properties and potential applications in different areas, there is a scarcity of scientific papers regarding how these substances interact with different organisms. The intent of this review was to compile the information published in this area since 2015 to allow the reader to better understand how, for example, bacteria, plants, fish, etc., react to the presence of this family of liquids. In general, lipophilicity is one of the main drivers of toxicity and thus the type of cation. The anion tends to play a minor (but not negligible) role, but more research is needed since, owing to the very nature of ILs, except for the most common ones (imidazolium and ammonium-based), many of them are subject to only one or two articles.

Abstract:Ionic liquids and their various analogues are without doubt the scientific sensation of the last few decades, paving the yellow brick road to a worldly version of Oz's green "Emerald city" – a more sustainable society. Their versatile suite of properties, originating from an almost inconceivably large number of possible cation and anion combinations, allows tuning of the structure to serve a desired purpose. Ionic liquids hence offer a myriad of useful applications from solvents to catalysts, through to lubricants, gas absorbers and azeotrope breakers. The purpose of this review is to explore the more unexpected of these applications, particularly in the energy space. It guides the reader through the application of ionic liquids and their analogues as i) phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal energy storage, ii) organic ionic plastic crystals (OIPCs), which have been studied as battery electrolytes and in gas separation, iii) key components in the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for sustainable ammonia generation, iv) as electrolytes in aluminum ion batteries, and v) in other emerging technologies. We conclude that there is tremendous scope for further optimizing and tuning of the ionic liquid in its task, subject to sustainability imperatives in line with current global priorities, assisted by artificial intelligence.
