Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) derived from biomass is a versatile platform chemical for producing various degradable polymers, especially polyethylene 2,5-furandicarbox-ylate (PEF). To reduce the high cost of feedstock, fructose instead of expensive 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was used as the feedstock for producing FDCA in the acetic acid (HOAc) solvent by a one-pot, two-step method. Fructose was first catalytically converted into HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural (AMF) in HOAc over the Amberlyst-15 catalyst. After the separation of only Amberlyst-15, the in situ-formed HMF and AMF were further catalytically oxidized to FDCA by air (oxygen) over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts following the free-radical chain reaction mechanism. HOAc was not only used as the solvent for the dehydration and following oxidation process but also served as the effective co-catalyst for the dehydration of fructose. The effects of catalyst species, dosage, and reaction temperature on the dehydration process and oxidation temperature on FDCA yield and purity were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a total yield of HMF and AMF of 50% and a final FDCA yield of 35% were achieved. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculation, the reaction mechanism for fructose dehydration side reactions and the HMF and AMF oxidation reactions was proposed correspondingly. The proposed two-step, one-pot method using fructose as the starting material is a promising route for the commercial production of FDCA with the simple operation and viable yield.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:In this contribution, readily available 5-methyl furfural (MF) derived from biomass was used as an excellent substitute of the chemically unstable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for preparing the commercial precursor 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). MF was catalytically oxidized by air into FDCA in acetic acid over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts at 130-170 degrees C. It was found that both the substitute reactivity and the ring chemical stability have a remarkable impact on the yield of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The effects of reaction temperature, pressure, catalyst composition and concentration, water concentration in the solvent, and substrate/solvent mass ratio on both the main reaction and the side reaction were investigated systematically and thoroughly using HPLC and an online tail gas monitoring system. Under optimized conditions, the oxidation of MF gave 100% conversion of MF and 75.8% yield of FDCA with 99.6% purity. It was also proven that the addition of 200 ppm cerium could work well at low temperatures (130-140 degrees C) for enhancing FDCA selectivity via suppressing the side reactions.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be widely converted into value-added chemicals and fuels production. Herein, we reported a sustainable and efficient approach for synthesizing HMF directly from cellulose. Facile formylation of cellulose with green and recyclable formic acid was developed for cellulose formate (CF) production. CF with special net-like structure and high degree of formyl substitution was prepared. The resultant CF exhibited excellent catalytic conversion and selectivity for HMF production comparable to monomeric glucose as reactant in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O media. In our work, we presented molecular dynamics simulations to elaborate the preferential coordination of DMSO around formyl group, which promoted the solvation of formylated substrate in DMSO-H2O mixture, and the HMF yielded could be protected by DMSO without further degradation to levulinic acid or humins.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising biobased aromatic monomer that can be used to synthesize novel biobased polymeric materials, but efficient synthesis of FDCA is still a great challenge to date. In this study, a two-step method is proposed to synthesize FDCA directly from fructose under mild conditions without 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) separation, using commercially available catalysts. In the first step, HMF was formed in 97.1% HPLC yield by dehydrating fructose in DMSO under the catalysis of Amberlyst-15 at 120 degrees C for 1 h. In the second step, the in situ formed HMF was oxidized in 3/1 (w/w) alkaline (K2CO3) H2O/DMSO medium under the catalysis of Pt/C at 100 degrees C for 10 h to form FDCA in 91% HPLC yield. The overall yield of FDCA from fructose reached as high as 88.4%. The conversions of HMF to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA) and HMFCA to 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) are fast, but FFCA to FDCA is a slow and rate-limiting step in HMF oxidation. H2O/DMSO ratio, alkali type, alkali/HMF ratio, and reaction temperature are important factors affecting the reaction rate and selectivity. The synergy between alkaline aqueous solution and DMSO is the key to high FDCA yield.

Abstract:As a crucial bio-based platform chemical, the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from the abundant substrate cellulose has garnered significant attention. However, tedious reaction steps are inevitable because of the complex tandem conversions of dissolution, hydrolysis, and dehydration. Furthermore, due to the ultralow solubility of cellulose, harsh reaction conditions are inevitable, which can exacerbate HMF degradation. To this end, we investigated the structural changes in microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) after its dissolution and regeneration in various dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to clarify the mechanisms underlying its dissolution. The results revealed that the highly crystalline cellulose I in MCC was converted into amorphous cellulose II after treatment with DMSO/tetraethylammonium chloride (TEAC), which led to the complete dissolution of MCC. Accordingly, a dissolution-catalysis coupling reaction strategy was proposed for converting MCC to HMF via a one-pot method in DMSO/TEAC, simultaneously reducing the number of steps necessary for the reaction and achieving mild reaction conditions. In addition, the pathway for the one-pot reaction was clarified by analyzing the intermediate yields. The combination of AlCl3 as a catalyst and DMSO/ TEAC resulted in a notable MCC conversion of 93.3 wt% and a high HMF yield of 53.1%. Remarkably, the reaction conditions employed in this study (130 degrees C, 1 h) were milder in terms of shorter reaction times and lower temperatures than those reported in most current literature. This was attributed to the complete dissolution of MCC resulting from decrystallization. Therefore, the proposed reaction strategy enabled the efficient production of HMF from cellulose.

Abstract:The synthesis of 2, 4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane through the acetalization of isobutyraldehyde with 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) catalyzed by the novel carbon based acid was first carried out. High conversion (≥98%) and specific selectivity were obtained using the novel carbon based acid, which kept high activity after it was reused 5 times. Moreover, the catalyst could be used to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with superior yield. The yield of several products was over 90%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the distinct advantages of high activity, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the success of the green process greatly.

Abstract:The reversible reaction of the hydroxyl groups in cellulose with CO2 in the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) results in a rapid and effective derivative dissolution of cellulose in DMSO, by which a series of cellulose acetate propionate (CAP) and cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) with various degrees of substitution (DS) were synthesized controllably without adding external catalysts. Wherein DBU not only achieves the dissolution of cellulose, but also acts as an efficient organocatalyst for the subsequent cellulose derivatization. The DS of CAB and CAP can be tuned by changing the feed molar ratio of propionic (butyric) anhydride/acetic anhydride and the reaction temperature. The structural and thermal properties of the products were characterized by several analytical techniques including NMR, FT-IR, and TGA. The CO2/DBU/DMSO dissolution system provides a new platform for controllable synthesis of mixed cellulose esters with high efficiency under mild conditions.

Abstract:The world is facing grand and ever-increasing pressures on energy and environmental issues. Using carbon-neutral biomass to prepare monomers such as dicarboxylic acids for degradable polymers is of great significance and an urgent but challenging task. Herein, we report a catalytic route for the synthesis of 2-hydroxy-2-methylsuccinic acid, an excellent monomer: e.g., it is able to remarkably enhance the comprehensive properties of polybutylene succinate as shown herein. By catalytic aerobic oxidation of levulinic acid, a bulk platform chemical derived from lignocellulose, the target product was obtained with a very high selectivity of up to ca. 95%. The mild reaction conditions below 100 °C in water and the low-cost reusable heterogeneous catalyst further make the process highly attractive for applications. This process was also found to be effective for the conversion of homologues of levulinic acid to dicarboxylic acids. We studied the C–C bond rearrangement and the roles of catalysts in the reaction that are highly likely involved in a superoxide anion radical mechanism. This study may provide inspiration for the synthesis of bio-based dicarboxylic acids via alternative routes.

Abstract:Corn stover and rice straw were comprehensively utilized and converted to alpha,omega-dicarboxylic acids (DCAs), highly valuable platform chemicals, by a combination of biological and chemical processes in order to make the process more economically competitive. They were pretreated with sodium hydroxide, then hydrolyzed with the cellulase from the on-site enzyme production by co-culture of Trichoderma reesei C10 and Aspergillus niger NL02. Glucose and xylose, main fermentable sugars produced, were converted by Mortierella isabellina to single cell oil (SCO). Subsequently, the unsaturated fatty acids from the SCO were transformed by metathesis to long chain DCAs. Overall, 115.7 g of corn stover could produce 4.2 g of DCAs, 4.2 g of alkenes, 4.1 g of saturated fatty acids, 4.9 g of glycerol and 9.3 g of ligiiin whereas 117.1 g of rice straw could produce 3.2 g of DCAs, 3.2 g of alkenes, 2.7 g of saturated fatty acids, 3.6 g of glycerol and 9.8 g of lignin. The DCAs production from lignocelluloses was successfully established and showed promising results in industry. Thus, this comprehensive utilization of agricultural residues is greatly meaningful to countries such as China which have high food demand and facing environmental problem due to abundance of agricultural waste. Abstract:Herein, we report a straightforward synthesis of valuable α-hydroxycarboxylic acid molecules via an acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of ethylene glycol and primary alcohols. A bench-stable manganese complex catalyzed the reaction, which is scalable, with the product being isolated with high yields and selectivities under mild conditions. The protocol is environmentally benign, producing water and hydrogen gas as the only byproducts. Methanol can also be used as a C1 source for producing the platform molecule lactic acid, with a high turnover of >104. The methodology was also used to functionalize alcohols derived from natural products and fatty acids. Furthermore, it was applied for synthesizing α-amino acid, α-thiocarboxylic acid, and several drugs and bioactive molecules, including endogenous metabolites, Danshensu, Enalapril, Lisinopril, and Rosmarinic acid. Preliminary mechanistic studies were performed to shed light on the mechanism involved in the reaction.

Abstract:In recent years, 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has attracted much attention as the precursor of bio-polyester materials. A coupled process of ultrasonic-assisted dilute acid pretreatment and MnO2 was designed in this study to directly produce FDCA from lignocellulosic biomass, which is different from the traditional preparation process. Moreover, the critical parameters in the process were analyzed and optimized by the response surface method. The yield of FDCA could reach 52.1% under the optimal conditions. The reaction mechanism indicated that heavy metal elements in lignocellulosic biomass could play the role of the Lewis acid catalyst to promote the formation of FDCA to a certain extent. With the increase of temperature, the heavy metals transfer in biomass from the solid phase to the liquid phase increased, but most of them remain in the former. Therefore, further purification and treatment measures are worthy of attention.

Abstract:α,ω-Dicarboxylic acids are important intermediates for the preparation of polyamides, polyesters and polyurethanes. However, their production pathways are limited and usually suffer from low efficiency and environmental problems. Here, we report an innovative approach to synthesize C+2 dicarboxylic acids directly from cyclic ethers by dicarbonylation. Different from the general findings that C+1 monocarboxylic acids are produced by carbonylation of cyclic ethers involving alkene intermediates, in this work, by manipulating the reaction system with RhCl3 and iodine in acetic acid, diiodide-substituted intermediates were selectively formed and subsequently converted to dicarboxylic acids in the presence of H2 and CO. As high as 84% yield of adipic acid was obtained directly from tetrahydrofuran. This catalytic system is applicable not only to a wide variety of cyclic ethers but also to different primary diols to synthesize C2-elongated α,ω-dicarboxylic acids. This work provides a novel dicarbonylation strategy for the efficient synthesis of adipic acid, glutaric acid and other important α,ω-dicarboxylic acids (such as 1,7-heptanedioic acid and 1,8-octanedioic acid) that are still not easily synthesized by other methods.

Abstract:Cellulose is the most abundant plant biomass component,which is also an important candidate for replacing fossil resource with the aim of sustainable future.In the present article,authors reviewed the catalytic transformation of cellulose into platform compounds,including glucose,hydroxymethylfurfural,levulinic acid and polyols via ionic liquids,solid acids and noble metal catalysts.Moreover,the application and the further transformation of these compounds were also introduced,for instance,the oxidation and reduction of hydroxymethylfurfural,the conversion of levulinic acid into γ-valerolactone,hydrocarbon,1,4-butandiol and methyl tetrahydrofuran,and the catalytic reforming of polyols into liquid fuels.The advances on the transformation of cellulose into platform compounds will shed a new light on the sustainable future in terms of the renewable resource.

Abstract:BackgroundMedium chain length (C6–C12) α,ω-dicarboxylic acids (DCAs) and corresponding esters are important building blocks for the polymer industry. For DCAs of 12 carbon atoms and longer, a sustainable process based on monooxygenase catalyzed ω-oxidation of fatty-acids has been realized. For medium-chain DCAs with a shorter chain length however, such a process has not been developed yet, since monooxygenases poorly ω-oxidize medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). On the contrary, esterified MCFAs are ω-oxidized well by the AlkBGTHJ proteins from Pseudomonas putida GPo1.ResultsWe show that MCFAs can be efficiently esterified and subsequently ω-oxidized in vivo. We combined ethyl ester synthesis and ω-oxidation in one-pot, whole-cell biocatalysis in Escherichia coli. Ethyl ester production was achieved by applying acyl-CoA ligase AlkK and an alcohol acyltransferase, either AtfA or Eeb1. E. coli expressing these proteins in combination with the ω-oxidation pathway consisting of AlkBGTHJ, produced mono-ethyl DCAs directly from C6, C8 and C9 fatty acids. The highest molar yield was 0.75, for mono-ethyl azelate production from nonanoic acid. Furthermore, di-ethyl esters were produced. Diethyl suberate was produced most among the di-ethyl esters, with a molar yield of 0.24 from octanoic acid.ConclusionThe results indicate that esterification of MCFAs and subsequent ω-oxidation to mono-ethyl DCAs via whole-cell biocatalysis is possible. This process could be the first step towards sustainable production of medium-chain DCAs and medium-chain di-ethyl esters.

Abstract:Artificial synthesis of carbohydrates has been a long-standing goal for chemists. Formose reaction is an established non-enzymatic one-step route to monosaccharides from a C1 source, where formaldehyde (HCHO) is polymerized under basic conditions. However, bases can lead to multiple side reactions. Thiazolium salts, when activated by a suitable base, can catalyze HCHO condensation to 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) via umpolung aldehyde activation, but they can slowly lose their activity due to product adsorption to the active site. Here, we report a heterogeneous, base-free formaldehyde condensation to DHA using a reactor based on a Soxhlet extractor, which quickly separates the product from the solid catalyst during the reaction. This design not only leads to a stable catalytic operation but also constitutes a clean HCHO-to-DHA conversion system. This oligomerization of formaldehyde to DHA completes a critical step in converting CO 2 to sugar, including CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol (CH 3 OH), CH 3 OH oxidation to HCHO, HCHO oligomerization to DHA, and DHA condensation to higher carbohydrates.

Abstract:As high-performance monomers for the manufacture of polyamide materials, mid- and long-chain dicarboxylic acids (DCAi, i ≥ 6) have received extensive attention from researchers. Biosynthesis is gradually replacing chemical synthesis due to its outstanding advantages in the industrial production of mid- and long-chain dicarboxylic acids, which is mostly achieved by using the strong terminal oxidation ability of nonmodel microorganisms such as Candida tropicalis to oxidize hydrophobic substrates such as alkanes. Here, we first summarize the metabolic pathways of oxidative alkane conversion into dicarboxylic acid by terminally oxidizing unconventional yeasts and the corresponding metabolic engineering strategies. Then, we summarize the research progress on new dicarboxylic acid production processes. Finally, the future development directions in the biosynthesis of mid- and long-chain dicarboxylic acids are prospected from synthetic biology and bioprocess engineering, which can also provide a reference for the synthesis of other biobased chemicals and biomaterials.
