Abstract:We study the dynamics of a reaction-diffusion-advection model for two competing species in a spatially heterogeneous environment. The two species are assumed to have the same population dynamics but different dispersal strategies: both species disperse by random diffusion and advection along the environmental gradient, but with different random dispersal and/or advection rates. Given any advection rates, we show that three scenarios can occur: (i) If one random dispersal rate is small and the other is large, two competing species coexist; (ii) If both random dispersal rates are large, the species with much larger random dispersal rate is driven to extinction; (iii) If both random dispersal rates are small, the species with much smaller random dispersal rate goes to extinction. Our results suggest that if both advection rates are positive and equal, an intermediate random dispersal rate may evolve. This is in contrast to the case when both advection rates are zero, where the species with larger random dispersal rate is always driven to extinction.

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equation describing single- and two-species population dynamics in an advective environment, based on the modeling frameworks proposed by Lutscher et al. in 2006. We analyze the effect of rate of loss of individuals at both the upstream and downstream boundaries. In the single-species case, we prove the existence of the critical domain size and provide explicit formulas in terms of model parameters. We further derive qualitative properties of the critical domain size and show that, in some cases, the critical domain size is either strictly decreasing over all diffusion rates, or monotonically increasing after first decreasing to a minimum. We also consider competition between species differing only in their diffusion rates. For two species having large diffusion rates, we give a sufficient condition to determine whether the faster or slower diffuser wins the competition. We also briefly discuss applications of these results to competition in species whose spatial niche is affected by shifting isotherms caused by climate change.

Abstract:We continue our study on the global dynamics of a nonlocal reaction–diffusion–advection system modeling the population dynamics of two competing phytoplankton species in a eutrophic environment, where both populations depend solely on light for their metabolism. In our previous work, we proved that system (1.1) is a strongly monotone dynamical system with respect to a non-standard cone related to the cumulative distribution functions, and further determined the global dynamics when the species have either identical diffusion rate or identical advection rate. In this paper, we study the trade-off of diffusion and advection and their joint influence on the outcome of competition. Two critical curves for the local stability of two semi-trivial equilibria are analyzed, and some new competitive exclusion results are obtained. Our main tools, besides the theory of monotone dynamical system, include some new monotonicity results for the principal eigenvalues of elliptic operators in one-dimensional domains.

Abstract:International Journal of Biomathematics, Ahead of Print. This paper is concerned with a model of reaction–diffusion–advection equations arising in ecology. The equations model a situation in which the foreign species and the native species are both assumed to be competing for space in the same ecological niche, and the foreign species is just random diffusion while the native species is "braver" — a combination of random diffusion and a directed movement up the gradient of the foreign species. Our aim is to give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the coexistence of the foreign species and native species. For this, we first establish an a priori estimate result. Then we apply eigenvalue theory and homogenization principle to derive the necessary conditions for the coexistence. Finally, the sufficient conditions for the coexistence are given by using a global bifurcation method.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a two-species reaction–diffusion competition model with Gompertz growth, where the intrinsic growth rates and carrying capacities of environments are heterogeneous. At firstly, assuming two competing species only admit different diffusive rates, we show that 'slower diffuser prevails', which is consistent with the well-known result in Dockery J, Hutson V, Mischaikow K, Pernarowski M. [The evolution of slow dispersal rates: a reaction–diffusion model. J Math Biol. 1998;37(1):61–83; Hastings A. Can spatial variation alone lead to selection for dispersal? Theor Popul Biol. 1983;24:244–251]. Then, for the "weak competition" case, we establish a prior estimate, which combined with the theory of monotone dynamical system and spectral analysis implies that the model admits a unique coexistence steady state, which is globally asymptotically stable. Finally, for the "strong–weak competition" case, we give the expression of critical competition intensity and the weak competitor will be wiped out.

Abstract:This paper examines a system of reaction–diffusion equations arising from a mathematical model of two microbial species competing for two complementary resources with internal storage in an unstirred chemostat. The governing system can be reduced to a limiting system based on two uncoupled conservation principles. One of main technical difficulties in our analysis is the singularities in the reaction terms. Conditions for persistence of one population and coexistence of two competing populations are derived from eigenvalue problems, maximum principle and the theory of monotone dynamical systems.

Besides, we get a spreading-vanishing dichotomy and criteria governing spreading and vanishing. Furthermore, when spreading occurs, the asymptotic spreading speeds of double free boundaries are estimated.

Abstract:We study a Lotka–Volterra type reaction–diffusion–advection system, which describes the competition for the same resources between two aquatic species undergoing different dispersal strategies, as reflected by their diffusion and/or advection rates. For the non-advective case, this problem was solved by Dockery et al. [9], and recently He and Ni [14] provided a further classification on the global dynamics for a more general model. However, the key ideas developed in [9], [14] do not appear to work when advection terms are involved. By assuming the resource function is decreasing in the spatial variable, we establish the non-existence of co-existence steady state and perform sufficient analysis on the local stability of two semi-trivial steady states, where new techniques were introduced to overcome the difficulty caused by the non-analyticity of stationary solutions as well as the diffusion–advection type operators. Combining these two aspects with the theory of monotone dynamical systems, we finally obtain the global dynamics, which suggests that the competitive exclusion principle holds in most situations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a classical two species Lotka–Volterra competition–diffusion–advection system, where the diffusion and advection rates of two competitors are supposed to be proportional. By employing the principal spectral theory, we first establish a key a priori estimate on the co-existence (positive) steady state, which is a powerful tool to link the local and global dynamics. We then further present a complete classification on all possible long-time dynamical behaviors by appealing to the theory of monotone dynamical systems. Lastly, we apply these results to a special situation where two species are competing for the same resources and obtain a sharp criteria in term of certain variable parameters for all kinds of global dynamics. This work gives a positive answer to the conjecture proposed by Lou et al. in [34] by considering a more general model under certain conditions, and also, can be seen as a further development of He and Ni [19] for competition–diffusion system, where we bring new ingredients in the arguments to overcome the difficulty caused by the involvement of advection.

Abstract:A nonlocal diffusion single population model with advection and free boundaries is considered. Our aim is to discuss how the advection rate affects dynamic behaviors of species under the case of small advection. Firstly, the well-posed global solution is obtained. Secondly, we apply the eigenvalue problem of integro-differential operator to obtain the dichotomy and sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing, which is determined by initial habitat and initial density. Further, the asymptotic spreading speed of species is estimated when spreading happens. Namely, we get the exact asymptotic spreading speed and find that if kernel function satisfies the certain condition, then the leftward asymptotic spreading speed is less than the rightward one due to the impact of advection rate. Meanwhile, we also observe that accelerated spreading happens if the certain condition does not be satisfied.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a two-species weak competition system of reaction-diffusion-advection with double free boundaries that represent the expanding front in a one-dimensional habitat, where a combination of random movement and advection is adopted by two competing species. The main goal is to understand the effect of small advection environment and dynamics of the two species through double free boundaries. We provide a spreading vanishing dichotomy, which means that both of the two species either spread to the entire space successfully and survive in the new environment as time goes to infinity, or vanish and become extinct in the long run. Furthermore, if the spreading or vanishing of the two species occurs, some sufficient conditions via the initial data are established. When spreading of the two species happens, the long time behavior of solutions and estimates of spreading speed of both free boundaries are obtained.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the spreading or vanishing dichotomy of a species which is characterized by a reaction-diffusion Volterra model with nonlocal spatial convolution and double free boundaries. Compared with classical reaction-diffusion equations, the main difficulty here is the lack of a comparison principle in nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations. By establishing some suitable comparison principles over some different parabolic regions, we get the sufficient conditions that ensure the species spreading or vanishing, as well as the estimates of the spreading speed if species spreading happens. Particularly, we establish the global attractivity of the unique positive equilibrium by a method of successive improvement of lower and upper solutions.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to study the population dynamics of a single species in a one-dimensional environment which is modeled by a reaction–diffusion–advection equation with free boundary condition. We find three critical values , 2 and for the advection coefficient with , which play key roles in the dynamics, and prove that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy result holds when ; a small spreading-vanishing dichotomy result holds when ; a virtual spreading-transition-vanishing trichotomy result holds when ; only vanishing happens when ; a virtual vanishing-transition-vanishing trichotomy result holds when . When spreading or small spreading or virtual spreading happens for a solution, we make use of the traveling semi-wave solutions to give a estimate for the asymptotic spreading speed and asymptotic profile of the right front.

Abstract:We consider a mathematical model of two competing species for the evolution of conditional dispersal in a spatially varying, but temporally constant environment. Two species are different only in their dispersal strategies, which are a combination of random dispersal and biased movement upward along the resource gradient. In the absence of biased movement or advection, Hastings showed that the mutant can invade when rare if and only if it has smaller random dispersal rate than the resident. When there is a small amount of biased movement or advection, we show that there is a positive random dispersal rate that is both locally evolutionarily stable and convergent stable. Our analysis of the model suggests that a balanced combination of random and biased movement might be a better habitat selection strategy for populations.
Remarks on Large-Scale Effects of Smoothing Mechanisms in 3D Reaction-Diffusion Equations

Abstract:In [2], we considered a class of reaction-diffusion equations that approximates the dynamical Phi(4)(3) model at large scales. These approximations involve very general smoothing mechanisms that are higher order perturbations of the Laplacian. In this note, we discuss assumptions made on the smoothing mechanism in that article. In particular, we remark that the strict positivity condition of the Fourier multiplier of the operator cannot be relaxed without other modifications, not even to allow it to reach zero outside the origin. On the other hand, if we introduce suitable Fourier cutoffs that are compatible with the non-positive part of the operator, then we expect that no smoothing assumption will be needed on its higher order terms. We then explain how this changes the coupling constant of the limiting equation, and how to modify the argument to prove the result.

Abstract:To reflect the government and media refutation to rumor propagation, we have established a reaction-diffusion rumor propagation model by considering a non-smooth control function. Firstly, we obtain the rumor propagation threshold according to the next generation matrix theory, prove the existence and uniqueness of solution and discuss the existence of the equilibrium points. Secondly, we discuss the stability of the equilibrium points with the impact of the spatial diffusion. Thirdly, the conditions for spatially homogeneous and discontinuous Hopf bifurcation are presented. Finally, several numerical simulations are given to show the possible impact, and the factors affecting rumor propagation are theoretically analyzed, which proves the validity of the theoretical analysis.

Moderate deviation principles for a reaction diffusion model in non-equilibrium

Abstract:We study moderate deviations from hydrodynamic limits of a reaction diffusion model. The process is defined as the superposition of the symmetric exclusion process with a Glauber dynamics. When the process starts from a product measure with a constant density, which is a non-equilibrium measure for the process, we prove that the re-scaled density fluctuation field satisfies the moderate deviation principle. Our proof relies on the so-called main lemma developed by Jara and Menezes in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1810.09526" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1810.09526">arXiv:1810.09526</a>, 2018].

Abstract:The dispersal of organisms in a heterogeneous environment is rarely random as individuals can sense and respond to local environmental cues by moving towards favourable habitats. We study reaction-diffusion-advection models which describe the biased movement of species upward along the resource gradient. Our focus is on the effects of such non-random movement of organisms on the spatial distribution and dynamics of both single and multiple populations. For a single species at equilibrium, previous works show that the species with strong biased movement upward along the resource gradient will overmatch the resource at each global maximum of the resource. In this work, we show that, in fact, the species will overmatch the resource at every local maximum of the resource. As an application, we also study a reaction-diffusion-advection model for two competing species. We assume that the two species are identical except for their dispersal strategies: both species adopt random dispersal combined with the advection upward along the resource gradient. It was shown in previous works that when both advection rates are large, a competitive exclusion phenomenon occurs: the species with relatively weaker advection drives the other to extinction, under the assumption that the resource has a unique maximum. In this work, we extend this competitive exclusion result to general resource functions with finite but arbitrarily many of local maxima.
