Abstract:During longwall mining, fractures in overlying coal bed or strata develop and released gas flows into the work environment through the fractures, thus may create an unsafe condition for underground workplace. One technique to capture the methane is to drill vertical gob gas ventholes (GGVs) to reduce methane emissions.. As the face of the longwall advances, the gas drainage flow of the GGV changes accordingly. Our Investigation shows that the distance of venthole to face (1) is a key influential factor for gas drainage flow (Q). Considering this, it is essential to understand the relationship between parameters Q and 1 for methane drainage. The sample examined in this paper is the measured data of seven GGVs, obtained during gas drainage at working face 5757 of the Wulan Coal Mine. Based on the statistical characteristics of gas production along the time, the data fitted well to a Multivariate Autoregressive-Moving Average model (MARMA model). The regression equation obtained for Q and I can be employed to dynamically predict Q during gas drainage by eliminating autocorrelation using the Auto-Regressive Moving-Average model (ARMA model). Depending on the dynamic prediction of Q, this paper studied the variation in Q with l. The results showed that Q increased to a maximum as 1 increased. This peak lasted for several weeks and then Q decreased gradually until gas drainage was complete. Q's maximum value and the corresponding 1 of GGVs near the intake entry were both smaller than those obtained from the GGVs near the return entry. Among other items, the distance between ventholes along the coal seam strike was analysed in this paper. The re-search results herein provide a reference for coal mines with geological conditions similar to those of the Wulan Coal Mine field to develop GGV extraction.
