Abstract:MoS2, Co-MoS2 and rGO-Co-MoS2 were synthesized successfully by a simple hydrothermal method. microstructures and Raman spectra of the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and Raman spectroscopy. The result indicate that the peaks at 14.4 degrees, 33.0 degrees and 58.4 degrees may be assigned to (002), (100) and (110) plane of pure MoS2, respectively. The crystallinity of MoS2 may be restrained by cobalt doping. D band and G band of amorphous carbon can be seen in the rGO-Co-MoS2. XPS result indicated that the rGO-10-Co-MoS2 is mainly consisted of S, Mo, Co, C and 0, respectively. The electrochemical performance test results show that rGO-10-Co-MoS2 presents the lowest overpotentials of 205 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and the smallest Tafel slope, indicating cobalt doping and rGO hybrid can improve electrocatalytic activity for HER. In addition, The sample also exhibit good electrocatalytic stability in the acid condition.

Abstract:A novel magnetic control strategy for heterostructured catalysts is reported. The Lorentz force generated by the external magnetic field enhances catalytic activity by improving surface charge, optimizing water splitting capability, and lowering the reaction energy barrier. The heterostructure strategy is currently an effective method for enhancing the catalytic activity of materials. However, the challenge that is how to further improve their catalytic performance, based on the principles of material modification is must addressed. Herein, a strategy is introduced for magnetically regulating the catalytic activity to further enhance the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity for Co0.85Se@CNTs heterostructured catalyst. Building on heterostructure modulation, an external alternating magnetic field (AMF) is introduced to enhance the electronic localization at the active sites, which significantly boosts catalytic performance (71 to 43 mV at 10 mA cm−2). To elucidate the catalytic mechanism, especially under the influence of the AMF, in situ Raman spectroscopy is innovatively applied to monitor the HER process of Co0.85Se@CNTs, comparing conditions with and without the AMF. This study demonstrates that introducing the AMF does not induce a change in the true active site. Importantly, it shows that the Lorentz force generated by the AMF enhances HER activity by promoting water molecule adsorption and O─H bond cleavage, with the Stark tuning rate indicating increased water interaction and bond cleavage efficiency. Theoretical calculations further support that the AMF optimizes energy barriers for key reaction intermediates (steps of *H2O‐TS and *H+*1/2H2).

Abstract:Few-layered molybdenum chalcogenide (MoS2) has attracted considerable attention due to its defect-rich structure and active edge sites, triggering distinctive electrocatalysis and magnetism properties. Quantifying the intrinsic properties of a single entity is of paramount importance for clarifying the structure-activity correlation. Here, the intrinsic activities of single MoS2 flakes toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) were investigated by single nanoparticle collision electrochemical measurements with and without a moderate magnetic field. Our results demonstrate that single bilayer MoS2 flakes show the highest HER performance and the greatest magnetic enhancement among bilayer-, trilayer-, and multilayer-MoS2 flakes. This is because bilayer MoS2 flakes possess abundantly exposed edge sites and sulfur vacancies, which simultaneously accelerate the reaction kinetics of HER and increase the ferromagnetism properties. This work gives new insight into providing specific guidance for the magnetic modulation of few-layered MoS2 and the design of highly effective MoS2-based electrocatalysts.
Spin-induced electron transfer simultaneously enhancing intrinsic activity and stability of amorphous MoSx-based materials toward efficient hydrogen evolution

Abstract:Designing the MoSx-based materials to simultaneously realize high intrinsic activity and reliable stability remains quite challenging since there is a contradictory relationship between them. For example, high intrinsic activity or efficient charge transfer indicates that the MoSx-based materials can provide abundant electron-rich sulfur atoms for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); lots of H* will attack these sulfur atoms; thus, this results in the massive missing of sulfur atoms and poor electrochemical stability. Instead, electron-deficient sulfur atoms lead to an unsatisfactory HER activity regardless of high stability. Herein, a feasible strategy for spin-state regulation is proposed to promote charge transfer, strengthen the Mo-S bond and activate sulfur atoms of MoSx toward efficient HER. In our strategy, the spin transition of the Co-doped species increases the unpaired electrons, favors wide spin channels and accelerates localized electrons transfer; additionally, Co-doping decreases the band-gap of electrocatalyst. These factors collectively improve charge transfer during HER. Second, the spin- and electronegativity-induced electron redistribution decreases the Mo-S bond length, which efficiently inhibits the massive missing of bridging or apical sulfur atoms. Third, introducing Co species into [Mo 3 S 13 ] 2- nanoclusters activates the terminal sulfur atoms owing to reasonable charge accumulation to favor the absorption of H*. With these benefits, the optimized electrocatalyst demonstrates high intrinsic activity and reliable stability. Our work provides a feasible strategy to design and synthesize the outstanding MoSx-based materials from the spin effect, and presents an insightful understanding of the possible mechanism on hydrogen spillover as well as enhancing their durability and structural stability toward efficient electrocatalysis.

Abstract:The exploration of efficient nonprecious metal eletrocatalysis of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an extraordinary challenge for future applications in sustainable energy conversion. The family of first-row-transition-metal dichalcogenides has received a small amount of research, including the active site and dynamics, relative to their extraordinary potential. In response, we developed a strategy to achieve synergistically active sites and dynamic regulation in first-row-transition-metal dichalcogenides by the heterogeneous spin states incorporated in this work. Specifically, taking the metallic Mn-doped pyrite CoSe2 as a self-adaptived, subtle atomic arrangement distortion to provide additional active edge sites for HER will occur in the CoSe2 atomic layers with Mn incorporated into the primitive lattice, which is visually verified by HRTEM. Synergistically, the density functional theory simulation results reveal that the Mn incorporation lowers the kinetic energy barrier by promoting H-H bond formation on two adjacently adsorbed H atoms, benefiting H-2 gas evolution. As a result, the Mn-doped CoSe2 ultrathin nanosheets possess useful HER properties with a low overpotential of 174 mV, an unexpectedly small Tafel slope of 36 mV/dec, and a larger exchange current density of 68.3 mu A cm(-2). Moreover, the original concept of coordinated regulation presented in this work can broaden horizons and provide new dimensions in the design of newly highly efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution.
Cation/anion-doping induced electronic structure modulation of CoMoO4 for enhanced hydrogen evolution

Abstract:The design and fabrication of high-performance, inexpensive and durable electrocatalyst toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is supremely significant for alleviating energy crisis and environmental concerns, but still remaining challenging. Herein, we develop an experimental work based on etching and reduction strategy to reveal the remarkable effect of cation/anion co-doping in CoMoO4 on its intrinsic HER activity. The CoMoO4 with Fe and B incorporation (Fe/B-CoMoO4) exhibits a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with strikingly low potential of 38 mV coupling with Tafel slope of 51 mV dec-1, and manifesting a robust durability for 100 h with no attenuation, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. The collective experimental and theoretical findings concomitantly illustrate that the enhanced performances are due to the strong synergistic effect resulting from the co-doping of Fe and B, which plays a pivotal role in finely tuning the electronic structure of CoMoO4, further optimizing the adsorption free energy of H intermediates and shifting the center of the d-band of Fe/B-CoMoO4 away from the Fermi level. This fantastic work highlights the critical role of foreign element incorporating for optimizing electronic structure of transition metal oxides toward HER, and offers valuable guiding principles for rational design of more efficient energy conversion devices.

Abstract:The external alternating magnetic field (AMF) strategy is the most promising research topic to solve the bottleneck of catalyst activity enhancement. However, the mechanism between the arrangement of the spin electrons under the AMF and the catalytic activity enhancement for water splitting is still unclear. Herein, we synthesize Fe 3 O 4 @CNTs heterostructure as a research model and resolve the mechanism by system theoretical analysis and in-situ Raman characterization. The multiple orbital interactions of σ( d z 2 , p z , s ) and π( d xz - p x , d yz - p y ) promote the hexa-coordinated Fe oct for both the reductive HER and oxidative OER processes. The AMF excites the transition from low to high spin configurations of the Fe oct sites, which accelerates charge transfer of unpaired d electrons and optimizes adsorption and desorption interactions to intermediates during the reaction processes, resulting in a significant enhancement of the electrocatalytic activity (HER: 32 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , OER: 179 mV at 100 mA cm -2 ).

Abstract:Hydrogen has been considered a viable substitute for fossil fuels, with the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) being the most sustainable method for producing hydrogen. However, developing non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high HER activity remains a significant challenge. In the present work, electrospinning carbon nanotube was used as a substance to in-situ grow MoS2/CoS2 composite material. The electrospinning carbon nanotube has a high length-diameter ratio, forming a conductive network. The MoS2/CoS2 composite material was neatly ranged on the carbon nanotube surface, resulting in a higher exposed degree of the active sites. Furthermore, there is a heterostructure between MoS2 and CoS2 leading to a visible electron shift. A density functional theory (DFT) study indicated that MoS2/CoS2 has much lower hydrogen adsorption free energy. As a result, the obtained catalyst exhibited excellent HER catalytic properties, with an overpotential of only 124 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope as low as 88.7 mV dec- 1 in 1 M KOH. In addition, it also has an excellent long-term stability.

Abstract:Magnetic fields are known as clean, economic, and effective tools to modify band and magnetic structures of materials. When coupled with catalytic processes such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), they have the potential to control catalytic efficiency. Herein, we studied the magnetic response of a series of materials as HER catalysts, specifically ferromagnetic Co2VGa, Co2MnGa, and Ni, ferrimagnetic Mn2CoGa, and paramagnetic Pt. We found that all the Heusler compounds exhibit impressively high intrinsic activity. Most importantly, the presence of a magnetic field can change the HER efficiency significantly, regardless of the magnetic state of the catalyst. We observed boosting HER kinetics for ferromagnetic Ni and paramagnetic Pt, and a decrease of efficiency for ferro/ferrimagnetic Heusler alloys. Our calculations suggest that the binding energy between the reaction intermediate and the catalyst can be tailored effectively by controlling the number of transferred electrons. These findings highlight the vital role of magnetic fields in tailoring heterogeneous catalytic reactions that involve adsorption of reactants.
Modulating Electronic Structures of Bimetallic Co-Fe Sulfide Ultrathin Nanosheet Supported on g-C3N4 Promoting Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Performance

Abstract:Heteroatom doping is a possible way to regulate the catalytic capability of electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This work focuses on the development of bimetallic Cobalt-Iron sulfide ultrathin nanosheets supported on the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) catalyst as efficient HER electrocatalysts (CoS2/FeS2/CN) with good stability at wide pH value. The ultrathin nanosheet exposes more active sites and enhances the catalyst activity. Electrochemical experiments demonstrate that adding g-C3N4 and Fe to CoS2 increases its catalytic activity and stability. Furthermore, g-C3N4 and Fe co-doped with CoS2 can modulate electronic structures on the interface. The CoS2/FeS2/CN exhibits outstanding HER performance, reaching a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with overpotentials of only 76.5 mV in an acidic solution and 175.6 mV in an alkaline solution. It also demonstrates exceptional durability, superior to commercial platinum/carbon catalysts. This work introduces a promising approach for designing low-cost, high-performance HER electrocatalysts with a wide pH range.

Abstract:Here, an in situ N incorporation method was developed to boost the efficiency and durability of CoMoS4 electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that such modification not only reduces the energy barrier of H* desorption by decreasing the electron densities around active metal sites, but also decreases the leaching rates of the metal ions with enhanced stability.

Abstract:Pyrite-type CoS2 with half-metal properties has attracted more attention in the energy field because it is a kind of non-precious metal electrocatalyst with inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and sustainable merits. Particularly, it can produce significant spin-polarized electrons from Co electronic states to run efficient hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). In this work, we focus attention on double-anionic CoPS nanocrystals (NCs) and explore electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Theoretical calculations indicate that phosphorus introduction into CoS2 shifts the d-band of Co atom towards the Fermi surface, making the surface activation barrier of CoPS (0.98 eV) far lower than that of CoS2 (1.41 eV). By growing the rod-like Co3(PO4)2 with surface decoration of CoPS NCs on the CoS2 wrapped carbon fiber paper as electrochemical cathode, we show that such a composite structure can effectively improve the escape efficiency of H2 due to large specific surface area. The current density reaches 10 mA cm-2 at 47 mV. The tafel slope is only 52 mV dec-1, which is far smaller than that of CoS2. Spectroscopic characterization suggests that the modified electronic states of CoPS NCs and good charge transport kinetics in the compound are responsible for the observed high-efficiency HER performance. This study provides a useful strategy for designing and fabricating efficient electrocatalysts with synergistic effect of double anions and hierarchical activity.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Interface-Triggered Spin-Magnetic Effect in Rare Earth Intraparticle Heterostructured Nanoalloys for Boosting Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Rare earth (RE) elements are attractive for spin-magnetic modulation due to their unique 4 f electron configuration and strong orbital couplings. Alloying RE with conventional 3d transition-metal (TM) is promising for the fabrication of advanced spin catalysts yet remains much difficulties in preparation, which leads to the mysteries of spin-magnetic effect between RE and 3d TM on catalysis. Here we define a solid-phase synthetic protocol for creating RE-3d TM-noble metal integrated intraparticle heterostructured nanoalloys (IHAs) with distinct Gd and Co interface within the entire Rh framework, denoted as RhCo-RhGd IHAs. They exhibit interface-triggered antiferromagnetic interaction, which can induce electron redistribution and regulate spin polarization. Theoretical calculations further reveal that active sites around the heterointerface with weakened spin polarization optimize the adsorption and dissociation of H2O, thus promoting alkaline hydrogen evolution catalysis. The RhCo-RhGd IHAs show a small overpotential of 11.3 mV at 10 mA cm-2, as well as remarkable long-term stability, far superior to previously reported Rh-based catalysts.
Engineering the Coordination Interface of Isolated Co Atomic Sites Anchored on N-Doped Carbon for Effective Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The regulation of the coordination environment of the central metal atom is considered as an alternative way to enhance the performance of single-atom catalysts (SACs). Herein, we design an electrocatalyst with active sites of isolated Co atoms coordinated with four sulfur atoms supported on N-doped carbon frameworks (Co1-S4/NC), confirmed by high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscope (HADDF-STEM) and synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. The Co1-S4/NC possesses higher hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity than other Co species and exceptional stability, which exhibits a small Tafel slope of 60 mV dec-1 and a low overpotential of 114 mV at 10 mA cm-2 during the HER in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. Furthermore, through in situ X-ray absorption spectrum tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal the catalytic mechanism of Co1-S4 moieties and find that the increasing number of sulfur atoms in the Co coordination environment leads to a substantial reduction of the theoretical HER overpotential. This work may point a new direction for the synthesis, performance regulation, and practical application of single-metal-atom catalysts.
In Situ Reconstruction to Surface Sulfide Adsorbed Metal Scaffold for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Activity

Abstract:S coordinates and anion vacancies introduced via sulfide‐mediated topotactic transformation facilitate the structural reconstruction of S doped Co3O4 (S‐Co3O4/carbon cloth (CC)) during hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and the real active sites are determined to be "metallic surface‐adparticles" system composed of Co scaffold and dilute coverage of S coordinated Coδ+. Favorable water dissociation and H* adsorption at the interfacial perimeters boost HER activity. Transition‐metal‐based compounds have been intensively explored as efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Feasible reconstruction to the real active sites, which is yet to be identified, endows the promotion of HER activity. Here, it is reported that the incoming S coordinates and anion vacancies prompt the structural reconstruction of S‐doped Co3O4 on carbon cloth (S‐Co3O4/CC) during HER. A list of in situ studies reveals that the real active sites for HER are the "metallic surface‐adparticles" system embracing metallic Co scaffold and the dilute coverage of S coordinated Coδ+. Reaction mechanism exploration illustrates that interfacial perimeters between the coverage of Co3S4 moieties and metallic Co considerably facilitate the adsorption of H*, improve the kinetics of water dissociation, and consequently promote HER activity. The exemplified sulfide‐mediated topotactic transformation strategy is extended to the preparation of S, Fe codoped Ni(OH)2 (S‐NiFe/CC) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst. The assembled anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer achieves a current density of 1.0 A cm−2 at 1.72 V, showing excellent capability in catalyzing overall water splitting at ampere level. This study, showing a feasible strategy that enables the facile reconstruction to identify active sites, would inspire the development of efficient electrocatalysts for HER and other electrochemical hydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:This study presents a novel magnetic heterostructure, CoFe2O4@CoFeMo3O8, that significantly improves conductivity, adsorption, spin‐dependent effect, and magnetothermal effect by synergistically regulating both charge transfer and spin polarization, leading to enhanced oxygen evolution reaction activity. The design of heterojunctions offers a crucial solution for energy conversion and storage challenges, but current research predominantly focuses on charge transfer benefits, often neglecting spin attribute regulation despite the increasing recognition of spin‐sensitivity in many chemical reactions. In this study, a novel magnetic heterostructure, CoFe2O4@CoFeMo3O8, is designed to simultaneously modulate charge and spin characteristics, and systematically elucidated their synergistic impact on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Experimental results and density functional theory calculations confirmed that the magnetic heterostructure exhibits both charge transfer and spin polarization. It is found that the charge‐transfer behavior enhances conductivity and adsorption ability through band structure regulation. Meanwhile, magnetically polarized electrons promote triplet O2 generation and accelerate electron transport via spin‐selective pathways. Moreover, the heterostructure's effective response to external alternating magnetic fields further amplifies the spin‐dependent effect and introduces a magnetothermal effect, locally heating the active sites through spin flip, thereby boosting catalytic activity. Consequently, the OER activity of the magnetic heterostructure is improved by 83.8 times at 1.5 V compared to its individual components. This magnetic heterojunction strategy presents a promising avenue for advanced catalysis through synergistic regulating of charge‐transfer and spin‐ordering.

Abstract:The elementary valence state in electrocatalysts has been demonstrated to significantly affect their catalytic ability. However, enhancing performance by controlling the elemental valence state and the precise doping location remains challenging. This work is devoted to exploring a controllable electronic structure that is capable of improving electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity by manipulating the valence state of an element at a specific location. This is demonstrated by reducing the high valence state Co 3+ in octahedral sites of Co 9 S 8 to form low valence state Co 2+ using sodium borohydride. The occupation of Co 2+ in the Co 3+ site gives rise to the generation of local lattice distortion, which provides more efficient active sites for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Additionally, Co 2+ in octahedral sites donates more electrons to adsorbed water molecules, which facilitates O-H dissociation and H* adsorption. The resulting electrocatalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 301 mV at 500 mA cm -2 for the HER, which is the best performance among all reported single-component Co 9 S 8 -based catalysts. This work paves an avenue for the rational design of HER electrocatalysts by precisely tuning the valence state of elements at specific locations.

Abstract:Water-splitting devices for hydrogen generation through electrolysis (hydrogen evolution reaction, HER) hold great promise for clean energy. However, their practical application relies on the development of inexpensive and efficient catalysts to replace precious platinum catalysts. We previously reported that HER can be largely enhanced through finely tuning the energy level of molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) by hot electron injection from plasmonic gold nanoparticles. Under this inspiration, herein, we propose a strategy to improve the HER performance of MoS2 by engineering its energy level via direct transition-metal doping. We find that zinc-doped MoS2 (Zn-MoS2) exhibits superior electrochemical activity toward HER as evidenced by the positively shifted onset potential to -0.13 V vs RHE. A turnover of 15.44 s-1 at 300 mV overpotential is achieved, which by far exceeds the activity of MoS2 catalysts reported. The large enhancement can be attributed to the synergistic effect of electronic effect (energy level matching) and morphological effect (rich active sites) via thermodynamic and kinetic acceleration, respectively. This design opens up further opportunities for improving electrocatalysts by incorporating promoters, which broadens the understanding toward the optimization of electrocatalytic activity of these unique materials.

Abstract:In the field of hydrogen production, MoS2 demonstrates good catalytic properties for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which improve when doped with metal cations. However, while the role of sulfur atoms as active sites in the HER is largely reported, the role of the metal atoms (i.e. molybdenum or the dopant cations) has yet to be studied in depth. To understand the role of the metal dopant, we study MoS2 thin films doped with Co and Mn ions. We identify the contribution of the electronic bands of the Mn and Co dopants to the integral valence band of the material using in-situ resonant photoemission measurements. We demonstrate that Mn and Co dopants act differently: Mn doping favors the shift of the S-Mo hybridized band towards the Fermi level, while in the case of Co doping it is the less hybridized Co band that shifts closer to the Fermi level. Doping with Mn increases the effectiveness of S as the active site, thus improving HER, while doping with Co introduces the metallic site of Co as the active site, which results less effective in improving HER properties.We therefore clarify the role of the dopant cation in the electronic structure determining the active site for hydrogen adsorption/desorption. Our results pave the way for the design of efficient materials for hydrogen production via the doping route, which can be extended to different catalytic reactions in the field of energy applications.

Abstract:A novel strategy for N‚Äźdoping coupled with Co‚Äźvacancies is demonstrated to precisely activate inert S atoms adjacent to Co‚Äźvacancies and significantly improve charge transfer for CoS toward accelerating HER. The upshift of the S 3p orbitals and more overlapping between the S 3py and H 1s orbitals are the key reasons for activating such S atoms. Besides, this strategy synergistically decreases the bandgap of CoS, thereby achieving efficient charge transfer during HER. The combination of hetero‚Äźelemental doping and vacancy engineering will be developed as one of the most efficient strategies to design excellent electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a novel strategy for N‚Äźdoping coupled with Co‚Äźvacancies is demonstrated to precisely activate inert S atoms adjacent to Co‚Äźvacancies and significantly improve charge transfer for CoS toward accelerating HER. In this strategy, N‚Äźdoping favors the presence of Co‚Äźvacancies, due to greatly decreasing their formation energy. The as‚Äźdeveloped strategy realizes the upshift of S 3p orbitals followed by more overlapping between S 3py and H 1s orbitals, which results in the favorable hydrogen atom adsorption free energy change (őĒGH) to activate inert S atoms as newborn catalytical sites. Besides, this strategy synergistically decreases the bandgap of CoS, thereby achieving satisfactory electrical conductivity and low charge‚Äźtransfer resistance for the as‚Äźobtained electrocatalysts. With an excellent HER activity of ‚ąí89.0¬†mV at 10.0¬†mA cm‚ąí2 in alkaline environments, this work provides a new approach to unlocking inert sites and significantly improving charge transfer toward cobalt‚Äźbased materials for highly efficient HER.
