Abstract:Calls for research into the acquisition of pragmatic competence in a second language have been a familiar feature of the interlanguage pragmatic landscape since the 1990s. Indeed, one of the first of these many calls was made as early as 1992 by Kasper in an article focusing on pragmatic transfer. In this article, she writes “… the majority of interlanguage pragmatics studies focus on use, without much attempt to say or even imply anything about development” (1992: 204) (cf. also Kasper & Dahl 1991). This observation was then verbalized rather forcefully in a very influential publication written by Kasper and Schmidt (1996) dedicated exclusively to the acquisition of second language (L2) pragmatic competence and designed “… to profile interlanguage pragmatics as an area of inquiry in second language acquisition research …” (1996: 149). Abstract:This Special Issue on Pragmatic Development and Stay Abroad further extends the research on pragmatic development, focusing in particular on pragmatic learning in a stay abroad context. The present introduction contextualises the papers and draws on key themes shared across papers. In so doing, it provides several impulses for future research on the study of pragmatic development in the stay abroad context. Specifically, the topics focused on include learner status, levels of pragmatic analysis, the use of corpus-linguistic and computerised technologies in interlanguage pragmatic data analysis and finally the influence of length of stay, intensity of interaction and also learner perceptions of input on the development of pragmatic competence during stay abroad.

Abstract:Initially, the methods involved in the study of L2 pragmatics emerged from the combination of questions prompted by theories and studies of second language acquisition (SLA) in the context of L1 pragmatics research. In this book, we have described how current L2 pragmatics research is expanding from its initial base, and drawing from a wider range of sources, ranging from education to psychology to computational, and cognitive. Concomitantly, elicitation methods and practices developed within L2 pragmatics research are now also helpfully filtering through to other areas, enriching general SLA research and beginning to inform theory construction. Second Language Pragmatics: From Theory to Research aims to reinvigorate this field, pointing the way forward to new methodologies that can drive, or be driven by, new theoretical developments. With a unique combination of leading international expertise in general pragmatics, L2 pragmatics, and research methodology, the authors describe in detail the methods, including the most recent techniques, by which pragmatics of all types can be pursued in L2 contexts. This volume argues that L2 pragmatics research needs to expand from its initial base by drawing from a wider range of sources, such as Corpus Linguistics and Psycholinguistics. Clear, accessible, and practical, Second Language Pragmatics will be valuable to novice and seasoned researchers alike in second language pragmatics, general pragmatics, and second language acquisition courses.

Abstract:Theoretical, empirical, and practical interest in pragmatic competence and development for second language (L2) learners has resulted in a large body of literature on teaching L2 pragmatics. This body of literature has diverged into two major domains: (a) a group of experimental studies directly testing the efficacy of various instructional methods in pragmatics learning and (b) research that explores optimal instructional practice and resources for pragmatic development in formal classroom settings. This article reviews literature in these two domains and aims at providing a collective view of the available options for pragmatics teaching and the ways that pragmatic development can best be promoted in the classroom. In the area of instructional intervention, this article reviews studies under the common theoretical second language acquisition paradigms of explicit versus implicit instruction, input processing instruction, and skill acquisition and practice. In the area of classroom practice and resources, three domains of research and pedagogical practices are reviewed: material development and teacher education, learner strategies and autonomous learning, and incidental pragmatics learning in the classroom. Finally, this article discusses unique challenges and opportunities that have been embraced by pragmatics teaching in the current era of poststructuralism and multiculturalism.

Issues in Acquisitional Pragmatics

Abstract:This paper aims at a comprehensive review of the growing body of research in L2 pragmatic acquisition, including both theoretical discussions and empirical studies to date. To this end, the paper deals with a number of issues which are grouped into four broad categories: the essential constituents of pragmatic competence, models of pragmatic development, major processes of pragmatic competence, and various factors affecting pragmatic development. Throughout the paper, it is shown that cultural knowledge has central importance in pragmatic competence and that such knowledge can be acquired through language-mediated social interactions. Furthermore, a learner’s unconditional adoption of a new set of cultural beliefs and values is unrealistic due to the unresolved conflict between L2 norms of speaking and the learner’s needs and beliefs about the ways of being in the world. Given these perspectives, this paper points to the need for a holistic approach to L2 pragmatic development, taking into account both the intralearner, psychological and the inter-learner, sociocultural aspects of learning. The paper concludes with the suggestion that L2 pragmatic competence be discussed in terms of intercultural competence involving the learner’s continuous, identity and attitude formation, rather than the acquisition of prescribed behavioral rules of speaking.

Abstract:Abstract In second language acquisition, corpus linguistics (CL) enjoys prominence as a methodology valuable for its descriptive power in the textual analysis of patterns. Within second language (L2) pragmatics, CL has been increasingly influential in shaping our understanding of learners’ pragmatic capacities and articulating new insights and possibilities. In this narrative review, I take a broad view of corpora in L2 pragmatics research with a focus on automatization, size, representativeness, temporal design, and annotation. This is followed by a review of representative research highlighting language proficiency, prosodic pragmatics, pragmatic particles and oral fluency, and pragmatics pedagogy. I conclude with future directions where the discussion centers on bringing CL and other methodologies together for pragmatic analysis and extending the use of these methodologies to more L2 pragmatic learning contexts.

Abstract:This chapter presents a critical review of current empirical research on pragmatics learning and teaching in L2 Chinese. Compared with other areas in Chinese SLA, investigation of L2 pragmatics has started rather late and received insufficient attention; only a small body of research has been conducted to explore the pragmatic ability of Chinese L2 learners. Though limited in number, prior research has addressed several core issues of L2 pragmatics, such as acquisitional path, role of learning contexts, and effects of instruction. This chapter reviews these studies in terms of their theoretical backgrounds, methodologies, key findings, and pedagogical implications. Built on these reviews, it also discusses and suggests areas for future exploration. This chapter presents a critical review of empirical research on pragmatics learning and teaching in second language (L2) Chinese. It reviews the studies in terms of their theoretical backgrounds, methodologies, key findings, and pedagogical implications. Interlanguage pragmatics (ILP) is an interdisciplinary field that studies how "nonnative speakers understand and carry out linguistic actions in the target language and how they acquire second language pragmatic knowledge". The chapter discusses the definition of pragmatics, and also reviews the historical development of the research in ILP as well as in Chinese L2 pragmatics. A review of the existing ILP literature shows a noticeable imbalance in its research targets. The chapter discusses three core issues: developmental, environmental, and instructional issues that have been examined in Chinese L2 pragmatics, reviews empirical studies that have explored Chinese L2 learners' pragmatic development, and summarizes their key findings.

Abstract:Situational variation has long been an accepted form of intra-lingual variation in speech act realisations. The effect of macro-social factors, such as region, ethnic background, age, social status and gender, on intra-lingual pragmatic conventions has, however, received comparatively little attention in the study of pragmatics to date [Kasper, G., 1995. Wessen Pragmatik? Für eine Neubestimmung fremdsprachlicher Handlungskompetenz. Zeitschrift für Fremdsprachenforschung 6 (1), 69–94, 72–73]. In addition, only very limited attention has been paid to macro-social pragmatic variation in modern dialectology, a discipline which focuses on the effect of macro-social factors on linguistic choices [cf. Wolfram, W., Schilling-Estes, N., 1998. American English. Dialects and Variation. Blackwell, Malden, MA, p. 89]. Variational pragmatics is a newly established sub-field of pragmatics which aims to meet this research gap. It is situated at the interface of pragmatics and dialectology and aims at a systematic investigation of the effect of macro-social pragmatic variation on language in action [cf. Abstract:Learning to request in a foreign language is a key competence within communicative language teaching.This paper examines how requests are taught using English G2000A (Cornelsen), an EFL textbook series employed in many schools in Germany.The focus of analysis is on the linguistic request strategies and request modification (pragmalinguistics) to be learned and on the contextual information provided on the use of these linguistic forms (sociopragmatics).Findings reveal that commonly employed request strategies and cognitively simple forms of modification are introduced -also in line with developmental patterns.However, it is also found that many strategies are not dealt with and that modification is only touched on.On a sociopragmatic level, a strong focus is found to exist on standard situations in which role relations are clear.Contextual constraints are generally communicated implicitly only and there is a general danger of overgeneralization.Finally, the textbook only considers cross-cultural differences in requesting to a very narrow extent.The paper closes with some recommendations.

Abstract:Discourse is language as it occurs, in any form or context, beyond the speech act. It may be written or spoken, monological or dialogical, but there is always a communicative aim or purpose. The present volume provides systematic orientation in the vast field of studying discourse from a pragmatic perspective. It first gives an overview of a range of approaches developed for the analysis of discourse, including, among others, conversation analysis, systemic-functional analysis, genre analysis, critical discourse analysis, corpus-driven approaches and multimodal analysis. The focus is furthermore on functional units in discourse, such as discourse markers, moves, speech act sequences, discourse phases and silence. The final section of the volume examines discourse types and domains, providing a taxonomy of discourse types and focusing on a range of discourse domains, e.g. classroom discourse, medical discourse, legal discourse, electronic discourse. Each article surveys the current state of the art of the respective topic area while also presenting new research findings.

Abstract:Intercultural pragmatics is usually associated with pragmatic di¤erences between di¤erent languages. This seems to be the default reading of the term. However, this reading tacitly ignores that there is no one-to-one relationship between languages and cultures.1 Speakers who share the same native language do not necessarily share the same culture. For instance, native speakers of English in Ireland and the United States use language in di¤erent ways (e.g., Schneider 1999, 2008). Neither do Americans in the US all use English in the same way (cf., e.g., Barron 2009; Wolfram and Schilling 2006: 93–101). On the other hand, cultures may be shared by speakers with di¤erent native languages. Thus, as language use in interaction is shaped by cultural values, pragmatic similarities may occur across languages, while pragmatic di¤erences may occur across varieties of the same language. Variational pragmatics is a subdiscipline of intercultural pragmatics. Other subdisciplines include contrastive pragmatics, cross-cultural pragmatics, ethnopragmatics, interlanguage pragmatics, and postcolonial pragmatics. Contrastive pragmatics is concerned with inter-lingual di¤erences, i.e., with pragmatic variation between di¤erent languages. Crosscultural pragmatics, on the other hand, compares the ways in which different languages are used in communication. It also deals with native speaker—non-native speaker interaction and with lingua franca communication (cf. Blum-Kulka et al. 1989; House-Edmondson 1986: 282).2 Ethnopragmatics is concerned with explaining speech practices in terms of a culture-internal perspective (e.g., in terms of values) rather than in terms of presumed pragmatic universals (cf. Goddard 2006). Interlanguage pragmatics focuses on the specific nature of language use conventions in learner language, e.g., in the English as a foreign language spoken by native speakers of German, and also on the acquisition of these conventions by learners (cf. Pragmatics in the field of English language teaching has recently received increasing research interests, but studies on teachers learning to teach pragmatics are limited. The present study extends this research agenda by investigating how well second/foreign language preservice teacher education (SLPTE) prepares teachers to teach pragmatics. Adopting a multi-site case study approach, this study examines (1) the representation of pragmatics and instructional pragmatics in SLPTE programmes at Australian and Vietnamese universities, and (2) programme leaders' beliefs about pragmatics instructor preparation. Data were collected from curriculum document analysis, a questionnaire, and four individual semi-structured interviews. The findings show that pragmatics was represented to different extents across the programmes but instructional pragmatics was entirely absent. The findings further show three sets of the programme leaders' beliefs: (1) preservice teachers were not well-prepared to teach pragmatics; (2) teaching pragmatics and instructional pragmatics to preservice teachers is important; and (3) pragmatics and instructional pragmatics need to be sufficiently addressed in SLPTE. The study has important implications for teacher educators, curriculum designers, and relevant stakeholders regarding L2 pragmatics teacher preparation.

Using Corpus-Linguistic Methods to Track Longitudinal Development: Routine Apologies in the Study Abroad Context

Abstract:Despite the recent emergence of corpus pragmatics, the use of corpus linguistic methods in interlanguage pragmatics remains limited. This study employs corpus linguistic methods to shed light on recurring patterns of use within a speaker group over time and also between speaker groups. We examine the extent to which a group of 33 Anglophone learners of German develop their knowledge of pragmatic routines in realising apologies in study abroad. Data was elicited via a production questionnaire and baseline data was also gathered. Corpus-driven methods reveal the primacy of explicit apologies in the data and facilitate an in-depth, fine-grained quantitative and qualitative analysis of these pragmatic routines by learners and native speakers alike. As such, the analysis incorporates the traditional level of the strategy, but also goes beyond it to focus on the formal level and investigate routine variants, routine modifications and learner-specific realisations. Findings reveal several unchanging features of learner apology behaviour over time, including a stable and heightened learner preference for explicit apologies relative to an L2 norm and an unchanging dependency on the realisation of these explicit apologies via a single routine expression. Developments towards an L2 norm are also recorded, as are non-linear developments frequently involving increases in learner-specific realisations. The path followed by a routine is shown to be dependent on an array of factors, including whether another form fulfils the same function, how complex a particular routine is and whether an equivalent routine exists in the L1. The article closes with a discussion of the potential for using corpus linguistic methods as a means of investigating routine development.

Abstract:Abstract Over the past two decades, the theoretical backgrounds of instructed second language (L2) pragmatics studies have diversified, and instructional materials have been designed and implemented based on various theories of second language acquisition (SLA). As a result, the field of instructed pragmatics has made significant strides in developing empirically driven, effective instructional methods. Recently, researchers in the fields of task-based language teaching (TBLT) and L2 pragmatics have claimed there are synergistic effects when teaching pragmatics from a TBLT perspective. These researchers argue that both pragmatics instruction and TBLT approaches to language teaching highlight the importance of language use in authentic contexts and achieving communication goals. The focus of the current review article is on task design and implementation in L2 pragmatics research, particularly those studies which were conducted from a TBLT perspective. Pedagogical implications of these studies are discussed, and future directions for task-based approaches to teaching L2 pragmatics for both research and pedagogy are proposed.

Abstract:This Element addresses translation issues within an interpersonal pragmatics frame. The aims of this Element are twofold: first, we survey the current state of the field of pragmatics in translation; second, we present the current and methodologically innovative avenues of research in the field. We focus on three pragmatics issues – relational work, participation structure, and mediality – that we foreground as promising loci of research on translational data. By reviewing the trajectory of pragmatics research on translation/interpreting over time, and then outlining our understanding of the Pragmatics in Translation as a field, we arrive at a set of potential research questions which represent desiderata for future research. These questions identify the paths that can be productively explored through synergies of the linguistic pragmatics framework and translation data. In two case study chapters, we offer two example studies addressing some of the questions we identified as suggestions for future research.
