Abstract:The objective of this article was to summarise the current state of secular trend analyses in the DONALD study on the quantity and quality of carbohydrates consumed by children and adolescents, using mixed linear regression models. For DONALD participants in all age groups, the overall carbohydrate intake increased by ca. 0.25 E%/year between 1985 and 2007. At the same time, the consumption of fibre fell, for both male and female children and adolescents. In boys, this was accompanied by a decrease in the supply of whole grain density by ca. 0.14 g/MJ/year. The consumption by adolescents of added sugar has increased by ca. 0.32 E%/year during the last 20 years. The current results of the DONALD study show that total carbohydrate intake has increased during the last 20 years, but that this has been accompanied by a deterioration in the quality of carbohydrate.
