Abstract:Abstract Micropollutants, including antibiotics, hormones, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products, are discharged into the environment with liquid and solid effluent streams from water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). The objective of this research was to determine whether biosolids-derived biochar (BS-biochar) could be used as a sorbent in continuous flow-through columns to remove micropollutants as a polishing step for wastewater treatment. Triclosan (TCS) was selected as a representative micropollutant due to frequent detection in liquid effluents, residual biosolids, and surface waters. Abstract:Biosolids from wastewater treatment are primarily disposed of via land applications, where numerous pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) may contaminate food crops and pose a human exposure risk. Biosolids are rich in organic carbon and addition of biosolids can increase the sorption of certain PPCPs in soil, decreasing their bioavailability. This study tested the hypothesis that the relative plant uptake of PPCPs decreases with increasing biosolids amendment. Accumulation of triclosan and triclocarban was measured in roots of radish and carrot grown in soils with or without biosolids. Addition of biosolids significantly prolonged the persistence of triclosan in soil. When expressed in bioaccumulation factor (BCF), accumulation of triclosan drastically decreased in biosolids-amended soils, while the effect was limited for triclocarban. Compared to the unamended soil, amending biosolids at 2% (w/w) decreased BCF of triclosan in the edible tissues of radish and carrot by 85.4 and 89.3%, respectively. Measurement using a thin-film passive sampler provided direct evidence showing that the availability of triclosan greatly decreased in biosolids-amended soils. Partial correlation analysis using data from this and published studies validated that biosolids decreased plant uptake primarily by increasing soil organic carbon content and subsequently sorption. Therefore, contamination of food crops by biosolids-borne contaminants does not linearly depend on biosolids use rates. This finding bears significant implications in the overall risk evaluation of biosolids-borne contaminants.

Abstract:Biosolids are extensively used in agriculture as fertilizers while offering a practical solution for waste disposal. Many pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), such as triclosan and triclocarban, are enriched in biosolids. Biosolid amendment changes soil physicochemical properties, which may in turn alter the persistence of PPCPs and hence the risk for secondary contamination such as plant uptake. To delineate the effect of biosolids on PPCPs persistence, triclosan and triclocarban were used as model compounds in this study and their sorption (Kd) and persistence (t1/2) were determined in different soils before and after biosolid amendment. Biosolids consistently increased sorption of triclosan and triclocarban in soil. The Kd of triclosan increased by 3.9–21 times following amendment of a sandy loam soil with biosolids at 2–10%. The persistence of both compounds was prolonged, with t1/2 of triclosan increasing from 10 d in the unamended soil to 63 d after biosolid amendment at 10%. The relationship between t1/2 and Kd was further examined through a meta-analysis using data from this study and all relevant published studies. A significant linear relationship between t1/2 and Kd was observed for triclosan (r2 = 0.69, p < 0.01) and triclocarban (r2 = 0.38, p < 0.05) in biosolid-amended soils. On the average, when biosolid amendment increased by 1%, t1/2 of triclosan was prolonged by 7.5 d, while t1/2 of triclocarban was extended by 4.7 d. Therefore, biosolid amendment greatly enhances persistence of triclosan and triclocarban, likely due to enhanced sorption or decreased chemical bioavailability. This finding highlights the importance to consider the effect of biosolids when evaluating the environmental risks of these and other biosolid-borne PPCPs.

Abstract:Wastewater, especially anaerobic treatment effluent, contains high ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) and inorganic orthophosphate (PO4-P), which necessitate additional treatment to meet stringent discharge regulations. Ion exchange regeneration is a process that can be adopted for not only removing but also recovering nutrients. However, recovering nutrients by ion exchange from nutrient-rich effluents that also contain micropollutants (which typically pass through anaerobic treatment as well) may result in subsequent problems, since micropollutants could end up in ion exchange effluent, regenerant, or recovered fertilizer products. Micropollutant removal by a nonselective adsorbent, such as biosolids-derived biochar, before nutrient recovery processes would mitigate potential risks. The objective of this research was to evaluate the capability of biosolids-derived biochar as a pretreatment step for separating micropollutants from nutrient-rich water before ion exchange for nutrient recovery. In the presence of ammonium and phosphate, both pristine and regenerated biosolids-derived biochar could effectively adsorb triclosan (TCS) and estradiol (E2), and to a lesser extent, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in batch sorption experiments. On the other hand, nutrient ions were not effectively adsorbed by biosolids-derived biochar. A continuous flow-through system consisting of columns in series filled with biochar, LayneRT, and then clinoptilolite was operated to test selective removal of micropollutants and nutrients in a flow-through system. The biochar column achieved more than 80% removal of influent TCS and E2, thereby reducing the chances of micropollutants being adsorbed by ion exchangers. Sulfamethoxazole removal through the biochar column was only 50%, indicating that biosolids-derived biochar would have to be optimized in the future for hydrophilic micropollutant removal. Influent nutrients were not effectively removed by the biochar column, but were captured in their respective selective ion exchanger columns. This research revealed that biosolids-derived biochar could be employed before ion exchange resins for removal of micropollutants from nutrient-rich water.

Abstract:The growing concern worldwide regarding the presence of emerging contaminants in biosolids calls for a better understanding of how different treatment technologies at water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) can influence concentrations prior to biosolids land application. This study focuses on the influence of solids treatment via the Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis Process™ in conjunction with anaerobic digestion (TH-AD) on concentrations of triclosan (TCS), triclocarban (TCC), and their transformation products in biosolids and sludges. Concentrations of the target analytes in biosolids from the TH-AD process (Class A), sludges from the individual TH-AD treatment steps, and limed biosolids (Class B) from the same WRRF were compared. TCC concentrations were significantly lower in Class A biosolids than those in the Class B product - a removal that occurred during thermal hydrolysis. Concentrations of TCS, methyl triclosan, and 2,4-dichlorophenol, conversely, increased during anaerobic digestion, leading to significantly higher concentrations of these compounds in Class A biosolids when compared to Class B biosolids. Implementation of the TH-AD process had mixed effect on contaminant concentrations.

Abstract:In this study, a sludge-derived biochar (SBC) was prepared, characterized and applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of triclosan (TCS) in water and wastewater. The results showed that SBC had porous structure with specific surface area of 157.4 m(2) g(-1). The optimal conditions for TCS degradation were examined as follows: pH 7.2, biochar dosage of 1.0 g/L and PMS concentration of 0.8 mM at 25 degrees C. The removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) reached 32.5% within 240 min under optimal conditions. Hydroxyl radicals, sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen contributed to TCS degradation. Dechlorination and hydroxylation were the main pathway of TCS degradation. Based on the intermediate products detected during the TCS degradation, the degradation pathway of TCS was tentatively proposed. This study demonstrated that SBC could be an effective activator of PMS for the degradation of toxic organic pollutants in water and wastewater.

Abstract:Antibiotic pollution poses a serious environmental concern worldwide, posing risks to ecosystems and human well-being. Transforming waste activated sludge into adsorbents for antibiotic removal aligns with the concept of utilizing waste to treat waste. However, the adsorption efficiency of these adsorbents is currently limited. This study identified KOH modification as the most effective method for enhancing tetracycline (TC) adsorption by sludge biochar through a comparative analysis of acid, alkali, and oxidant modifications. The adsorption characteristics of TC upon unmodified sludge biochar (BC) as well as KOH-modified sludge biochar (BC-KOH) were investigated in terms of equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics. BC-KOH exhibited higher porosity, greater specific surface area, and increased abundance of oxygen-based functional groups compared to BC. The TC adsorption on BC-KOH conformed the Elovich and Langmuir models, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 243.3 mg/g at 298 K. The adsorption mechanisms included ion exchange, hydrogen bonding, pore filling, and electrostatic adsorption, as well as π-π interactions. Interference with TC adsorption on BC-KOH was observed with HCO3−, PO43−, Ca2+, and Mg2+, whereas Cl−, NO3−, and SO42− ions exhibited minimal impact on the adsorption process. Following three cycles of utilization, there was a slight 5.94% reduction in the equilibrium adsorption capacity, yet the adsorption capacity remained 4.5 times greater than that of unmodified sludge BC, underscoring its significant potential for practical applications. This research provided new insights to the production and application of sludge biochar for treating antibiotic-contaminated wastewater.

Abstract:Triclocarban (TCC), an emerging endocrine disruptor, has been commonly found in municipal treated wastewater. Pseudomonas fluorescens MC46 (MC46), an effective TCC-degrading bacterium, could be applied to remove TCC from wastewater. In addition, application of a cell immobilization technique could possibly enhance its removal performance. This study examined microbial cells immobilized on waste biochar (from wood vinegar production) as a highly effective advanced wastewater treatment unit for TCC removal. TCC removal was investigated from real wastewater samples using the following treatments: biochar only, cell-immobilized biochar, and free cell systems in batch (short-term) and semi-batch (long-term) modes. The TCC adsorption capacities of original and potassium hydroxide-modified biochars (no cells) were 8.43 and 9.17 mg/g, respectively. During the batch experiment, the cell-immobilized modified biochar exhibited the highest TCC removal, 79.80%, in the model TCC solution. Five-cycle semi-batch experiments were utilized to investigate the reusability and performance of the treatment systems. After five cycles, the cell-immobilized modified biochar still achieved stable TCC removal (52%) due to the integration of adsorption and biodegradation. Free MC46 cells and biochars (no MC46 cells) only removed 32% and 2% of TCC, respectively, due to cell washout/death and sorbent exhaustion. This important work clearly demonstrates the significant potential for the future utilization of cell-immobilized biochars in a sustainable wastewater treatment system. Furthermore, the use of renewable agro-industrial wastes aid in the development of a strong circular bio-based economy.

Abstract:The efficient removal of antibiotics such as tetracycline (TC), which are frequently detected in multiple environments, has attracted widespread attention due to the potential risks to human health and the environment. Biochar (BC), with its low cost, effective adsorption properties, and excellent regeneration performance, has been widely used for antibiotic removal by adsorption in recent years. However, the limited antibiotic adsorption capacity of BC affects its practical application. Thus, there is a need to modify BC to enhance its practicability in the treatment of wastewater. This review describes the raw materials and preparation methods, including pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction and microwave pyrolysis, of BC. Furthermore, the effects of biological, physical and chemical modification methods on the physicochemical properties of BC were analyzed and discussed. Moreover, the influencing factors and adsorption mechanism of TC and regeneration methods of BC and the removal of TC from real wastewater by BC were also reviewed. Finally, there is a lack of research on the use of BC for treating TC-polluted water, and analyses and ideas for the future growth of BC adsorption to TC are provided. The contents of this article are intended to help scholars gain a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the latest progress in this field.

Abstract:Triclosan (TCS), an emerging pollutant emerges as a notable contributor to adverse impacts on aquatic organisms owing to its widespread use during COVID19. The current study aims to investigate the efficiency of sugarcane bagasse biochar (SBB) for removal of triclosan (TCS), an emerging pollutant in aquatic ecosystems in presence of humic acid from aqueous solution through batch and column studies. In batch study, SBB prepared at pyrolysis temperature of 400 °C showed highest adsorption of TCS. Langmuir isotherm model showed highest adsorption of 68.49 mg g −1 at pH 7.0. A 90 % reduction in TCS was accomplished with 0.625 g L −1 of SBB-400 °C. Adsorption kinetic modelling was well fitted to pseudo-second order model signifying that rate of adsorption on SBB-400 °C mainly depends on chemisorption. TCS removal was not significantly inhibited in presence of 5, 10 and 25 mg L −1 humic acid concentrations. Column experiments of continuous flow biochar-bed column with the aqueous solution spiked with TCS (100 mg L −1 ) at a flow rate of 50 mL min −1 showed 99 % removal efficiency. Thomas model and Yoon-Nelson model signified the breakthrough behaviour of TCS adsorption on the column and the experimental data were in good agreement with the expected values. Bioassay studies on Chlorella vulgaris exhibited that percentage inhibition (8 %) in algal cell counts was significantly less in the SBB treated TCS water when compared with control (untreated water containing TCS). The designed column is highly efficient, effective and eco-friendly approach for TCS removal.

Abstract:Triclocarban (TCC), an antibacterial agent commonly used in personal care products, is one of the top ten contaminants of emerging concern in various environmental media, including soil and contaminated water in vadose zone. This study aimed to investigate TCC-contaminated water remediation using biochar-immobilized bacterial cells. Pseudomonas fluorescens strain MC46 (MC46), an efficient TCC-degrading isolate, was chosen, whereas agro-industrial carbonized waste as biochar was directly used as a sustainable cell immobilization carrier. According to the long-term TCC removal performance results (160 d), the biochar-immobilized cells consistently exhibited high TCC removal efficiencies (84-97%), whereas the free MC46 removed TCC for 76-94%. At 100 days, the detachment of the MC46 cells from the immobilized cell column was observed. The micro-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results indicated that extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) was produced, but polysaccharide and protein fractions were washed out of the column. The lipid fraction of EPS adhered to the biochar, promoting TCC sorption for long-term treatment. The shortening of MC46 cells improved the tolerance of TCC toxicity. The TCC-contaminated water was successfully detoxified by the biochar-immobilized MC46 cells. Overall, the waste-derived biochar-immobilized cell system proposed in this study for the removal of emerging contaminants, including TCC, is efficient, economical, and aligned with the sustainable development concept of value-added utilization of waste.
The ultramicropore biochar derived from waste distiller's grains for wet-process phosphoric acid purification: Removal performance and mechanisms of Cr(VI)

Abstract:Solid waste and heavy metal pollution are long-term and challenging subjects in the field of environmental engineering. In this study, we propose a sustainable approach to "treating waste with waste" by utilizing the ultramicropore biochar derived from solid waste distiller's grains as a means to remove Cr(VI) from simulated wastewater and wet phosphoric acid. The biochar prepared in this research exhibit extremely high specific surface areas (up to 2973 m2/g) and a well-developed pore structure, resulting in a maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of 426.0 mg/g and over 99% removal efficiency of Cr(VI). Furthermore, the adsorbent can be reused for up to eight cycles without significant reduction in its Cr(VI) adsorption performance. Mechanistic investigations suggest that the exceptional Cr(VI) adsorption capacity can be attributed to the synergistic effect of electrostatic interaction and reduction adsorption. This study offers an alternative approach for the resource utilization of solid waste distiller's grains, and the prepared biochar holds promise for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater and wet-process phosphoric acid.
Anoxic Biodegradation of Triclosan and the Removal of Its Antimicrobial Effect in Microbial Fuel Cells.

Abstract:Triclosan (TCS) is an emerging organic contaminant in the environment. Here, the anoxic bio-degradation of TCS in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) was explored. It was found that anoxic biodegradation of TCS could be achieved in MFC, and the removal rate of TCS was accelerated after reactor acclimation. After 7 months of operation, 10mg/L TCS could be removed within 8days in MFCs. Fluorescence microscopy results revealed that the microbe cells in the reactors were intact, and the microbes were in active state. Flow cytometry test showed that the proliferation of inoculated microbe was higher in MFC effluent than that in TCS solution. These data indicate that the biotoxicity of TCS has been largely eliminated after the treatment. The microbial community shift during the TCS degradation process was investigated as well. Species such as Geothrix, Corynebacterium, Sulfobacillus, GOUTA19, Geobacter, Acidithiobacillus and Acinetobacter, which were capable for the degradation of benzene-related and dechlorination of chlorine-containing chemicals, were flourished in the electrode biofilm. They may participate in the biodegradation of TCS. This work provides a new perspective for the anoxic biodegradation of recalcitrant organics, and can be useful for the in-situ bioremediation of environmental pollutants with the removal of their biotoxicity.

Abstract:In this study, a high-performance porous adsorbent was prepared from biochar through a simple one-step alkali-activated pyrolysis treatment of walnut shells, and it was effective in removing tetracycline (TC). The specific surface area (SSA) of potassium hydroxide-pretreated walnut shell-derived biochar pyrolyzed at 900°C (KWS900) increased remarkably compared to that of the pristine walnut shell and reached 1713.87±37.05 m 2 ·g −1 . The maximum adsorption capacity of KWS900 toward TC was 607.00±31.87 mg·g −1 . The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models were well suited to describe the TC adsorption process onto KWS900. The KWS900 exhibited high stability and reusability for TC adsorption in the presence of co-existing anions or cations over a wide pH range of 1.0–11.0. Further investigations demonstrated that the proposed adsorption mechanism involved pore filling, hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and electrostatic interaction. These findings provide a valuable reference for developing biochar-based adsorbents for pollutant removal.

Abstract:The present study focuses on the successful preparation of microbial palladium nanoparticles (Pd-NPs). The even distribution of Pd in the periplasmic space of B. megaterium Y-4 cells is characterized using a transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the domination of Pd (0) in Pd-NPs. The microbial Pd-NPs were selected to detoxify triclosan (TCS). Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to analyze the intermediate products of dechlorination and oxidization. Free radicals quenching and 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO) capturing experiments confirmed the crucial contribution of atomic H• and O2·– to TCS degradation. Besides, TCS degradation by microbial Pd-NPs could alleviate the cytotoxicity of TCS polluted water. Meanwhile, great circulating utilization of microbial Pd-NPs was obtained in degrading TCS. Corresponding findings in the present study could provide new insight into the role of microbial Pd-NPs in detoxifying pollutants.

Biochar improved the solubility of triclocarban in aqueous environment: Insight into the role of biochar-derived dissolved organic carbon

Abstract:Biochar as an effective adsorbent can be used for the removal of triclocarban from wastewater. Biochar-derived dissolved organic carbon (BC-DOC) is an important carbonaceous component of biochar, nonetheless, its role in the interaction between biochar and triclocarban remains little known. Hence, in this study, sixteen biochars derived from pine sawdust and corn straw with different physico-chemical properties were produced in nitrogen-flow and air-limited atmospheres at 300–750 °C, and investigated the effect of BC-DOC on the interaction between biochar and triclocarban. Biochar of 600∼750 °C with low polarity, high aromaticity, and high porosity presented an adsorption effect on triclocarban owing to less BC-DOC release as well as the strong π-π, hydrophobic, and pore filling interactions between biochar and triclocarban. In contrast and intriguingly, biochar of 300∼450 °C with low aromaticity and high polarity exhibited a significant solubilization effect rather than adsorption effect on triclocarban in aqueous solution. The maximum solubilization content of triclocarban in biochar-added solution reached approximately 3 times its solubility in biochar-free solution. This is mainly because the solubilization effect of BC-DOC surpassed the adsorption effect of biochar though the BC-DOC only accounted for 0.01–1.5 % of bulk biochar mass. Furthermore, the high solubilization content of triclocarban induced by biochar was dependent on the properties of BC-DOC as well as the increasing BC-DOC content. BC-DOC with higher aromaticity, larger molecular size, higher polarity, and more humic-like matters had a greater promoting effect on the water-solubility of triclocarban. This study highlights that biochar may promote the solubility of some organic pollutants (e.g., triclocarban) in aqueous environment and enhance their potential risk.

Abstract:Application of biochar as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment has obtained a tremendous research interest owning to their low cost and surface functionality. In this research, an iron loaded sludge biochar was successfully prepared through a simple and economical one-step modification hydrothermal method. The iron loaded sludge biochar possesses large amounts of surface organic functional groups (such as hydroxy, carboxyl and aromatic ring, etc.), smaller particle size (about 10 nm) as well as relative higher surface area (82.780 m2 g-1) than of the pristine one. The selective removal of two kinds of antibiotics by the prepared products was demonstrated. Experimental data was ﬁtted to isotherm and kinetic models, and thermodynamic parameters were also calculated. In the single antibiotic system, the maximum adsorption amount of tetracycline (TC) and doxycycline (DOX) could reach 104.86 and 128.98 mg g-1 at 293.15 K, respectively. In the binary antibiotics system, there was an antagonistic effect between TC and DOX. Furthermore, the adsorption of TC was much more inhibited than that of DOX owning to its deferent steric hindrance of molecular structure.
