Abstract:Based on the combination of Janbu method for slope stability analysis and Newmark's sliding block method for displacement calculation, a procedure, named as extended Newmark and Janbu method (extended NJ method), had been proposed to evaluate rationally the earthquake-induced displacement of slopes containing a weak layer. By using the extended NJ method, a comprehensive analysis of slope displacement or slope stability during and post mainshock was performed by considering the effects of aftershock, dissipation of excess pore water pressure and rising of ground water level. The analysis results showed the dissipation of excess pore water pressure can significantly increase the stability of failed slope, while after mainshock and rising of ground water level can aggravate the hazard of slope failure.
