Abstract:A natural wetland was transformed to 5 parallel free-surface wetland units to treat paper-making wastewater; nitrogen removal was studied on site. Four different operation modes were employed in the 4 units to compare the operation mode affecting on the removal efficiency, the left one was used as the blank, the final results show that the constant flow had the best removal efficiency for Nitrogen with 42.44% for September, and 29.58% of four months average. The Nitrogen contented in the soil, and in different organs of reed plants was analyzed, Nitrogen in tassel was much higher than that in leaves, stem and root of the reed; the percentage of nitrogen contented in the Tassel was 1.85%, however, the percentage of nitrogen contented in the root was only 0.428%. The operation mode had not clearly influence on the nitrogen content in the stem and root, however, it had a significant effect on the nitrogen content in the Tassel. The harvesting is suggested the suitable way to remove the nitrogen from the system.
