Abstract:A new multiattribute decision-making (MADM) methodology based on set pair analysis (SPA) for an interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy set environment is developed in this paper. The connection number, which is known as a major component of SPA, provides a quantitative analysis to integrate the certainty and uncertainty as a combined system. First, we briefly review the concepts of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IVIFS) and the binary connection number (BCN). Then, the transformation method of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy numbers into BCNs is studied. Finally, we present a new MADM method where interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy values are used to express evaluating values of alternatives on attributes, and weights are represented with real numbers or IVIFS. Some typical examples are presented to illustrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed approach.

Abstract:This paper aims to develop an aggregation operator for two-tuple linguistic information based on utility function, which characterizes the influence of decision makers' psychological factors on the linguistic aggregation process. First, we propose a new two-tuple linguistic ordered utility aggregation (TOU) operator, and then, we investigate its properties that are suitable for any utility function. Subsequently, we derive a specific form of the TOU operator, which is called the two-tuple linguistic generalized ordered weighted utility averaging-hyperbolic absolute risk aversion (TOHU) operator, under the hyperbolic absolute risk aversion utility function. Then, we further investigate its families including a wide range of aggregation operators. To determine the weights of the TOHU operator, which take the form of two-tuple linguistic, we establish an optimization weighting model by combining the information of input arguments and subjective considerations of decision makers. Furthermore, we propose a two-tuple linguistic aggregation method to deal with the multiple attribute group decision-making (MAGDM) problem based on the TOHU operator. Finally, we provide an example to demonstrate the application of the TOHU operator to MAGDM.

Abstract:The method of Set Pair Analysis is to study the certain and uncertain relationship between the different things and the key of this method is to calculate the connection degree of these things. In order to assess the urbanization levels, this paper proposed a new method to establish the assessment standards according to the value of assess indexes. The urbanization level of Yangtze River delta cities was assessed by Set Pair Analysis, and the results calculated are generally consistent with Nonlinear Mapping Analysis and Factor Analysis. Set Pair Analysis can provide an effective solution to urbanization assessment. The proposed method of standards establishment and Set Pair Analysis can also be used in other areas without unified assessment standards.

Abstract:For all kinds of uncertainties such as fuzzy uncertainty, random uncertainty, indeterminate-known uncertainty, unknown and unexpected incident uncertainty, and uncertainty which is resulted from imperfective information, the set pair analysis (SPA) studies the relationship between the certainty and the uncertainty of a thing from three aspects of identity-discrepancy-contrary (IDC), and processes uniformly the uncertainties of a system that is resulted from the above uncertainties using the connection degree (mu). Because the study of this theory is carried through from the whole of uncertainties, and doesn't need to distinguish definitely which part is fuzzy uncertainty or random uncertainty or other uncertainties, this theory is relatively practical. SPA has been successfully applied to many fields though there is only more than ten years from its birth to now. In this paper, SPA is applied to the urban planning project comprehensive evaluation. In the course of the evaluation, such indexes as cost of construction, traffic convenience degree, virescence coverage rate, etc. are taken into account.

Among component combination, a variety of factors must be taken into consideration. However, these factors are always incomparable so that it is difficult to make an effective choice. This paper introduces multi-attribute utility function to improve the accuracy of decision-making. By converting incommensurable objective function or criteria to single objective function, and combining with the AHP method, our appraoch can achieve the most optimum combination of components.

Abstract:We introduce a new interpretation of two related notions - conditional utility and utility independence. Unlike the traditional interpretation, the new interpretation renders the notions the direct analogues of their probabilistic counterparts. To capture these notions formally, we appeal to the notion of utility distribution, introduced in previous paper. We show that utility distributions, which have a structure that is identical to that of probability distributions, can be viewed as a special case of an additive multiattribute utility functions, and show how this special case permits us to capture the novel senses of conditional utility and utility independence. Finally, we present the notion of utility networks, which do for utilities what Bayesian networks do for probabilities. Specifically, utility networks exploit the new interpretation of conditional utility and utility independence to compactly represent a utility distribution.

Abstract:The trisecting-acting-outcome (TAO) model of three-way decisions includes trisecting a universal set into three separate and closely connected regions, devising, and applying efficient strategies on the three regions, furthermore evaluating the outcome. This paper introduces the proportional utility function (PUF), representing the ratio between an object's initial and final quantity, to measure the outcomes from two different perspectives for movement-based three-way decision. The first perspective, is that if each object produces the same benefits or costs when they have the same movement (call region-independent), we sum up the three regions' utility as the overall outcome. The second scenario, is that each object generates a different cost or benefit, even if they have the same movements (call region-dependent). Here, finding an optimal investment plan is an essential matter based on their equivalent classification according to their specific characteristics. For a single equivalence class, we design a strategy to reach the goal under a specific investment, although this investment may be conservative. For all equivalence classes, we give one-time optimal investment plans using PUF based on invested or reserved resources in the movement-based three-way decision. Based on the program, we adopt a series of strategies in action under these investment budgets. The experimental results show that our strategy choices have practical significance and are in line with expected results.

The Power of Second Chance: Personalized Submodular Maximization with Two Candidates

Abstract:Most of existing studies on submodular maximization focus on selecting a subset of items that maximizes a \emph{single} submodular function. However, in many real-world scenarios, we might have multiple user-specific functions, each of which models the utility of a particular type of user. In these settings, our goal would be to choose a set of items that performs well across all the user-specific functions. One way to tackle this problem is to select a single subset that maximizes the sum of all of the user-specific functions. Although this aggregate approach is efficient in the sense that it avoids computation of sets for individual functions, it really misses the power of personalization - for it does not allow to choose different sets for different functions. In this paper, we introduce the problem of personalized submodular maximization with two candidate solutions. For any two candidate solutions, the utility of each user-specific function is defined as the better of these two candidates. Our objective is, therefore, to select the best set of two candidates that maximize the sum of utilities of all the user-specific functions. We have designed effective algorithms for this problem. We also discuss how our approach generalizes to multiple candidate solutions, increasing flexibility and personalization in our solution.

Abstract:As a unifying concept in economics, game theory, and operations research, even in the Robotics and AI field, the utility is used to evaluate the level of individual needs, preferences, and interests. Especially for decision-making and learning in multi-agent/robot systems (MAS/MRS), a suitable utility model can guide agents in choosing reasonable strategies to achieve their current needs and learning to cooperate and organize their behaviors, optimizing the system's utility, building stable and reliable relationships, and guaranteeing each group member's sustainable development, similar to the human society. Although these systems' complex, large-scale, and long-term behaviors are strongly determined by the fundamental characteristics of the underlying relationships, there has been less discussion on the theoretical aspects of mechanisms and the fields of applications in Robotics and AI. This paper introduces a utility-orient needs paradigm to describe and evaluate inter and outer relationships among agents' interactions. Then, we survey existing literature in relevant fields to support it and propose several promising research directions along with some open problems deemed necessary for further investigations.

Abstract:Abstract This paper proposes a novel fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making method based on an improved score function of connection numbers and Choquet integral under interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy environment. To do so, we first introduce a method to convert interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy numbers into connection numbers based on the set pair analysis theory. Then an improved score function of connection numbers is proposed to make the ranking order of connection numbers more in line with reality in multi-criteria decision-making process. In addition, some properties of the proposed score function of connection numbers and some examples have been given to illustrate the advantages of conversion method proposed in the paper. Then, considering interactions among different criteria, we propose a fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making approach based on set pair analysis and Choquet integral under interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy environment. Finally, a case of online learning satisfaction survey and a brief comparative analysis with other existing approaches are studied to show that the proposed method is simple,convenient and easy to implement. Comparing with previous studies, the method in this paper, from a new perspective, effectively deals with multi-criteria decision-making problems that the alternatives cannot be reasonably ranked in the decision-making process under interval-valued Pythagorean fuzzy environment.

Abstract:We address the problem of ambiguity and inconsistency in a decision maker's (DM) assessed utility function by using a maxmin framework. In this framework DM's utility function belongs to a set of functions. The member functions of the set are nondecreasing, and satisfy additional boundary and auxiliary conditions. The maxmin framework provides robustness in decision making. Alternatively, it allows us to perform sensitivity or parametric analysis for the optimal decision when a reference utility function is known. For this purpose we use a cost of ambiguity concept, and show that this cost is increasing and concave when extent of ambiguity is parametrically increased. Next we develop a Lagrangian based solution approach for the decision problem. We show that under suitable conditions a Sample Average Approximation (SAA) of the Lagrangian model can be solved using a mixed integer linear program (MILP). We also show that the set of optimal solutions of the SAA converges to that of its true counterpart, and the optimum objective value of the SAA converges to the true objective value at an exponential rate. We use this convergence property to develop a heuristic for identifying a solution of the SAA MILP with increasing sample size. We illustrate the properties of the maxmin model using two examples of portfolio investment and streaming bandwidth. We provide a discussion on the performance of a commercial solver used to solve SAA MILPs, and the quality of solutions generated by the proposed heuristic. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Orseau and Ring, as well as Dewey, have recently described problems, including self-delusion, with the behavior of agents using various definitions of utility functions. An agent's utility function is defined in terms of the agent's history of interactions with its environment. This paper argues, via two examples, that the behavior problems can be avoided by formulating the utility function in two steps: 1) inferring a model of the environment from interactions, and 2) computing utility as a function of the environment model. Basing a utility function on a model that the agent must learn implies that the utility function must initially be expressed in terms of specifications to be matched to structures in the learned model. These specifications constitute prior assumptions about the environment so this approach will not work with arbitrary environments. But the approach should work for agents designed by humans to act in the physical world. The paper also addresses the issue of self-modifying agents and shows that if provided with the possibility to modify their utility functions agents will not choose to do so, under some usual assumptions.

Abstract:The school choice problem concerns the design and implementation of matching mechanisms that produce school assignments for students within a given public school district. Previously considered criteria for evaluating proposed mechanisms such as stability, strategyproofness and Pareto efficiency do not always translate into desirable student assignments. In this note, we explore a class of one-sided, cardinal utility maximizing matching mechanisms focused exclusively on student preferences. We adapt a well-known combinatorial optimization technique (the Hungarian algorithm) as the kernel of this class of matching mechanisms. We find that, while such mechanisms can be adapted to meet desirable criteria not met by any previously employed mechanism in the school choice literature, they are not strategyproof. We discuss the practical implications and limitations of our approach at the end of the article.
Utility maximization in constrained and unbounded financial markets: Applications to indifference valuation, regime switching, consumption and Epstein-Zin recursive utility

Abstract:This memoir presents a systematic study of the utility maximization problem of an investor in a constrained and unbounded financial market. Building upon the work of Hu et al. (2005) [Ann. Appl. Probab., 15, 1691--1712] in a bounded framework, we extend our analysis to the more challenging unbounded case. Our methodology combines both methods of quadratic backward stochastic differential equations with unbounded solutions and convex duality. Central to our approach is the verification of the finite entropy condition, which plays a pivotal role in solving the underlying utility maximization problem and establishing the martingale property and the convex duality representation of the conditional value process. Through four distinct applications, we first study the utility indifference valuation of financial derivatives with unbounded payoffs, uncovering novel asymptotic behaviors as the risk aversion parameter approaches zero or infinity. Furthermore, we study the regime switching market model with unbounded random endowments and consumption-investment problems with unbounded random endowments, both constrained to portfolios chosen from a convex and closed set. Finally, we investigate the investment-consumption problem of an investor with the Epstein-Zin recursive utility in an unbounded financial market.

Abstract:With smartphones and geo-locating devices widely used around the world, ridesharing, as a main application field of spatial crowdsourcing, has been fast expanding its widespread adoption and potentially brings great benefits to human society and the environment. However, ridesharing has so far not been as popular as expected. A recent survey shows that notable obstacles come from concerns about social comfort and price fairness when riding with strangers. To defeat these obstacles, in this paper, we study a novel problem of utility-aware ride matching (URM) for dynamic ridesharing, where drivers and riders are matched in batches by considering their social comfort and price revenue. While the URM problem is of practical usefulness, we prove that this problem is Nondeterministic Polynomial Hard (NP-hard). To tackle the problem optimally and find exact answers, we present a novel bipartite matching algorithm by integrating an effective Driver-Rider Graph (DR-Graph) index. To balance the effectiveness and efficiency, we propose two efficient algorithms to solve the URM problem with only a small loss of utility. Leveraging a bounded Driver-Rider-group Graph (DRg-Graph) and several useful pruning bounds for matching utility and travel cost, we develop an $\epsilon$ -refining algorithm to find an $\epsilon$ -approximation matching utility of the optimal answer. Extensive experiments on real datasets showed that our proposed algorithms achieved effective matching results of social-pricing based utilities and the efficient performance of quick matching under various parameter settings.
Analysis of Discrete Choice Models: A Welfare-Based Framework

Abstract:Based on the observation that many existing discrete choice models admit a welfare function of utilities whose gradient gives the choice probability vector, we propose a new representation of discrete choice model which we call the welfare-based choice model. The welfare-based choice model is meaningful on its own by providing a new way of constructing choice models. More importantly, it provides great analysis convenience for establishing connections among existing choice models. We prove by using convex analysis theory, that the welfare-based choice model is equivalent to the representative agent choice model and the semi-parametric choice model, establishing the equivalence of the latter two. We show that these three models are all strictly more general than the random utility model, while when there are only two alternatives, those four models are equivalent. In particular, we show that the distinction between the welfare-based choice model and the random utility model lies in the requirement of the higher-order derivatives of the welfare function. We then define a new concept in choice models: substitutability/complementarity between alternatives. We show that the random utility model only allows substitutability between different alternatives; while the welfare-based choice model allows flexible substitutability/complementarity patterns. We argue that such flexibility could be desirable in capturing certain practical choice patterns and expanding the scope of discrete choice models. Examples are given of new choice models proposed under our framework.
