Abstract:Travel time reliability is of increasing importance for travelers, shippers, and transportation managers because traffic congestion has become worse in major urban areas in recent years. To better evaluate the urban network-wide travel time reliability, five indices based on the emerging on-demand ride service data are proposed: network free flow time rate (NFFTR), network travel time rate (NTTR), network planning time rate (NPTR), network buffer time rate (NBTR), and network buffer time rate index (NBTRI). These indices take into account the probability distribution of the travel time rate (i.e., travel time spent for the unit distance, in min/km) of each origindestination (OD) pair in the road network. We use realworld data extracted from DiDi-Chuxing, which is the largest on-demand ride service platform in China. For demonstrative purposes, the network-wide travel time reliability of Beijing is analyzed in detail from two dimensions of time and space. The results show that the road network is more unreliable in AM/PM peaks than other time periods, and the most reliable time period is the early morning. Additionally, we can find that the central region is more unreliable than other regions of the city based on the spatial analysis results. The proposed network travel time reliability indices provide insights for the comprehensive evaluation of the road network traffic dynamics and day-to-day travel time variations.

Abstract:Road network bottleneck would shift around according to the demand or supply, and therefore behaves differently from static bottlenecks such as on-off ramp and lane drop. The identification of dynamic bottlenecks is crucial for management and control. Traditional methods use direct measurements. Such methods may be biased and can only analyze the recurrent or non-recurrent bottleneck, not both. This research uses rank measurement based on speed to identify bottlenecks. The underlying idea is that bottleneck links or areas have relatively lower rank, and neighboring links covered by the same congestion event should behave similarly with respect to the rank distribution. The identification procedure is implemented by three steps: firstly, the rank distribution is fit using Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), and then the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence is employed to measure the similarity between adjacent links; at last, the bottleneck areas are clustered. Using rank information would enhance the bottleneck identification performance.

Abstract:Urban road congestions change both temporally and spatially. They are essentially caused by network bottlenecks. Therefore, understanding bottleneck dynamics is critical in the goal of reasonably allocating transportation resources. In general, a typical bottleneck experiences the stages of formation, propagation and dispersion. In order to understand the three stages of a bottle neck and how the bottleneck moves on a road network, traffic flow data can be used to reconstruct these dynamics. However, raw traffic flow data is usually flawed in many ways. For instance some portion of data may be missing due to the failure of data collection devices, or some random factors in the data make it hard to identify real bottlenecks. In this paper a "user voting method" is proposed to deal with such raw-data-related issues. In this method, road links are ranked according to the weighed sum of certain performance measures and the links that are ranked relatively high are regarded as recurrent bottlenecks in a network, and several bottlenecks form a bottleneck area. A series of bottleneck parameters can be defined based on the identified bottleneck areas, such as bottleneck coverage, bottleneck link length, etc. Identifying bottleneck areas and calculating the bottleneck parameters for each time interval can reflect the evolution of the bottlenecks and also help trace how the bottlenecks move.

Abstract:The frequent occurrence of natural disasters and operational incidents poses a significant threat to urban rail transit (URT) systems. Therefore, it is crucial to design a resilient URT network that can offer commuters convenient and reliable services. In this study, we construct a URT life-cycle resilience assessment model oriented towards passenger travel service. This proposed methodology is applied to the Beijing rail transit using real-world data. The results indicate that the importance of stations depends not only on topology but also on passenger flow and redundancy alternatives. The loop line exhibits greater resilience and can efficiently evacuate passengers in the event of a disturbance. Additionally, hub transfer stations that connect to suburban areas, while not central in the network's topology, emerge as potential weak points. The findings of this study carry substantial implications for the URT's daily operational management and decision-making processes.

Abstract:During the last twenty years, the complex network modeling approach has been introduced to assess the reliability of rail transit networks, in which the dynamic performance involving passenger flows have attracted more attentions during operation stages recently. This paper proposes the passenger-flow-weighted network reliability evaluation indexes, to assess the impact of passenger flows on network reliability. The reliability performances of the rail transit network and passenger-flow-weighted one are analyzed from the perspective of a complex network. The actual passenger flow weight of urban transit network nodes was obtained from the Shanghai Metro public transportation card data, which were used to assess the reliability of the passenger-flow-weighted network. Furthermore, the dynamic model of the Shanghai urban rail transit network was constructed based on the coupled map lattice (CML) model. Then, the processes of cascading failure caused by network nodes under different destructive situations were simulated, to measure the changes of passenger-flow-weighted network reliability during the processes. The results indicate that when the scale of network damage attains 50%, the reliability of the passenger-flow-weighted network approaches zero. Consequently, taking countermeasures during the initial stage of network cascading may effectively prevent the disturbances from spreading in the network. The results of the paper could provide guidelines for operation management, as well as identify the unreliable stations within passenger-flow-weighted networks.

Abstract:Based on large-scale human mobility data collected in San Francisco and Boston, the morning peak urban rail transit (URT) ODs (origin-destination matrix) were estimated and the most vulnerable URT segments, those capable of causing the largest service interruptions, were identified. In both URT networks, a few highly vulnerable segments were observed. For this small group of vital segments, the impact of failure must be carefully evaluated. A bipartite URT usage network was developed and used to determine the inherent connections between urban rail transits and their passengers' travel demands. Although passengers' origins and destinations were easy to locate for a large number of URT segments, a few show very complicated spatial distributions. Based on the bipartite URT usage network, a new layer of the understanding of a URT segment's vulnerability can be achieved by taking the difficulty of addressing the failure of a given segment into account. Two proof-of-concept cases are described here: Possible transfer of passenger flow to the road network is here predicted in the cases of failures of two representative URT segments in San Francisco.

Abstract:With urban and public transportation development, the urban rail transit networks (URTN) become increasingly complex, evolving into multi-layer and intricate systems. The operating environment is complex, and the rising frequency of emergencies significantly impacts the entire network. Consequently, the resilient ability of URTN to deal with risk attacks has become an important research field. In this paper, a bilayer URTN model is constructed, encompassing urban and suburban rail transit, proposing the adjacency matrix and the coupling mechanism of subnetworks. Then, the performance of a URTN jointly considering network efficiency, network structure entropy, and the number of trips per unit time is addressed. By considering passenger travel alternatives under disruptions, we develop an improved Logit stochastic user equilibrium (SUE) passenger assignment model based on generalized travel time costs, introducing the failure degree of the stations, to predict passenger flow paths. A multi-dimensional resilience assessment model is proposed using the resilience change curve for attack scenarios and recovery strategies, and a comprehensive network performance system through the AHP method to determine the weight coefficients of indicators. Finally, we present a case study based on the Shanghai URT network to explore the resilience of URTN in the morning peak and simulate the network resilience under different failure scenarios. The results indicate that the proposed model can assess the resilience of the Shanghai MRTN under random and malicious failure, and the former has less comprehensive performance losses and greater resilience. Additionally, the sensitivity analysis is conducted to explore the impact of the number of failed stations, the failure degree of stations, and recovery ability on network resilience. This study provides theoretical support for urban managers and builders regarding network structure and emergency management, and offers relevant suggestions.

Abstract:With the development of society and economy, the urban rail transit has become one of the important components of urban transportation system, while the construction of the urban rail greatly improves the public transportation environments. Currently, there are many research focus on the passenger flow predictions according to their corresponding historical data, however, it is hard to assist transport models vary such volumes for a new station planning or being constructed. In view of this limitation, we provide a novel method for urban rail station characteristics analysis in intelligent transportation considering city land usages. Initially, point of interest (POIs) are divided by the proposed RC-tree (Colored R-tree)-based algorithm into the bounded areas for each station. Second, the Diversity and Proportion approaches are proposed to extract the $top$ -$k$ POIs from bounded areas based on their semantic and spatial characteristics. Then, classify the stations based on the similarity of the extracted $top$ -$k$ POIs. Moreover, we made a case study on real dataset, including a large volume of Automatic Fare Collection system (AFC) records for the experimental evaluations, and the results show that the proposed method can verify the rationality of land use and provide support for the application of transportation model technology.

Abstract:As the scale of urban rail transit (URT) networks expands, the study of URT resilience is essential for safe and efficient operations. This paper presents a comprehensive review of URT resilience and highlights potential trends and directions for future research. First, URT resilience is defined by three primary abilities: absorption, resistance, and recovery, and four properties: robustness, vulnerability, rapidity, and redundancy. Then, the metrics and assessment approaches for URT resilience were summarized. The metrics are divided into three categories: topology-based, characteristic-based, and performance-based, and the assessment methods are divided into four categories: topological, simulation, optimization, and data-driven. Comparisons of various metrics and assessment approaches revealed that the current research trend in URT resilience is increasingly favoring the integration of traditional methods, such as conventional complex network analysis and operations optimization theory, with new techniques like big data and intelligent computing technology, to accurately assess URT resilience. Finally, five potential trends and directions for future research were identified: analyzing resilience based on multisource data, optimizing train diagram in multiple scenarios, accurate response to passenger demand through new technologies, coupling and optimizing passenger and traffic flows, and optimal line design.

Abstract:The whole society is increasingly aware of the importance of urban rail transit (URT) safety and risk management. In order to correctly identify and evaluate the risk factors of URT operation and then classify and take differential measures to deal with the risk factors, the risk sources of URT accidents were analyzed by fault tree analysis and the URT operation risk evaluation index system concerning 8 categories and 40 risk sources were constructed. The DEA (data envelopment analysis) method with entropy-AHP hybrid constraint was established, and the probability and consequences of URT operation risk were taken as decision variables to evaluate and rank various risk factors. The results show that decision-making units (DMU) 1and 2, namely, vehicle system failure and signal communication system failure, are at the largest Pareto risk units, the probability of risk can be reduced by 50.08% and 41.7%, and the risk consequences can be reduced by 35.57% and 46.83%, respectively. Staff factors and environment and management factors are the other two units closest to the maximum risk surface. A risk factor distribution matrix was established, and 40 risk factors are divided into risk factors, leverage risk factors, conventional risk factors, and influential risk factors, which provide a basis for the classification and policy of rail transit risk management.

Abstract:In the context of the network operation of urban rail transit systems, disruptions caused by signal interruptions influence not only the operation of the service at a single station but also the level of service of the whole network. Moreover, it is even possible to induce the cascading failure of the urban rail transit network. Therefore, it is essential to maintain the real-time dynamic monitoring of abnormal stations in urban rail transit systems for security reasons. Based on the large amounts of automated fare collection (AFC) data, a real-time calculation method to estimate the influence intensity of the passenger flow is presented, the spatiotemporal distribution of the influence characteristics is analyzed, and the propagation law of disruptions in the urban rail transit network is explored. First, the fluctuation threshold of passenger flow in a normal situation for all stations was calculated. Accordingly, abnormal stations influenced by the disruption were identified. Then, an evaluation method for calculating the influence intensity of the passenger flow was proposed. Finally, a real-world case study based on the Beijing rail transit system was conducted. All abnormal stations were identified dynamically and displayed in real time, and the distribution and propagation law of abnormal stations were constructed by spatiotemporal diagrams. The influence intensity of passenger flow was analyzed in detail from the perspective of the whole network and representative stations. The results revealed that transfer stations were more vulnerable to the effects of disruption, and the duration for which these stations were affected was longer than that of ordinary stations. Moreover, short-distance travelers were less affected by the disruption than long-distance travelers. The method proposed in this paper can provide a theoretical basis for rail management departments to grasp the characteristics of passenger flow in real time, formulate disposal measures dynamically, and provide more accurate information services for passengers.

Abstract:The networked operation of urban rail transit system is an inevitable trend for future development. However, risk identification in such systems will become increasingly complex. Therefore, exploring the topological structure of urban rail transit system is essential for improving their risk identification capability. This paper proposes a topology-based risk identification method for urban rail transit system. Based on historical data and system component structure, the method identifies risks from three aspects: personnel, physical structure, and external environment. A global risk network model is constructed using a physical structure-oriented urban rail transit system topology network, and a comprehensive risk measurement calculation method based on entropy weight-TOPSIS is established using composite complex network theory. Case studies demonstrate that the proposed method can identify key risk nodes in urban rail transit system and develop corresponding risk prevention and control strategies before accidents occur, thus reducing unnecessary maintenance costs.

Abstract:Time reliability in a Rail Transit Network (RTN) is usually measured according to clock-based trip time, while the travel conditions such as travel comfort and convenience cannot be reflected by clock-based trip time. Here, the crowding level of trains, seat availability, and transfer times are considered to compute passengers’ Perceived Trip Time (PTT). Compared with the average PTT, the extra PTT needed for arriving reliably, which equals the 95th percentile PTT minus the average PTT, is converted into the monetary cost for estimating Perceived Time Reliability Cost (PTRC). The ratio of extra PTT needed for arriving reliably to the average PTT referring to the buffer time index is proposed to measure Perceived Time Reliability (PTR). To overcome the difficulty of obtaining passengers’ PTT who travel among rail transit modes, a Monte Carlo simulation is applied to generated passengers’ PTT for computing PTR and PTRC. A case study of Chengdu’s RTN shows that the proposed metrics and method measure the PTR and PTRC in an RTN effectively. PTTR, PTRC, and influential factors have significant linear relations among them, and the obtained linear regression models among them can guide passengers to travel reliably.

Abstract:Safety evaluation and enhancement of urban rail transit network can identify risk bottlenecks and improve the network operation status, thereby reducing accidents and improving efficiency. Existing studies seldom consider quantitative calculation of operation risk and overall network distribution. In contrast, this paper proposes to quantitatively measure the safety of the rail transit network with a risk function. Minimizing the overall risk of the rail transit network is modeled as a convex optimization problem. Finally, a real case of Chongqing metro is taken for example to verify the method. The results show that with reasonable passenger flow assignment, the overall risk of the rail transit network is reduced.
Passenger Route and Departure Time Guidance under Disruptions in Oversaturated Urban Rail Transit Networks

Abstract:The urban rail transit (URT) system attracts many commuters with its punctuality and convenience. However, it is vulnerable to disruptions caused by factors like extreme weather and temporary equipment failures, which greatly impact passengers' journeys and diminish the system's service quality. In this study, we propose targeted travel guidance for passengers at different space-time locations by devising passenger rescheduling strategies during disruptions. This guidance not only offers insights into route changes but also provides practical recommendations for delaying departure times when required. We present a novel three-feature four-group passenger classification principle, integrating temporal, spatial, and spatio-temporal features to classify passengers in disrupted URT networks. This approach results in the creation of four distinct solution spaces based on passenger groups. A mixed integer programming model is built based on individual level considering the First-in-First-out (FIFO) rule in oversaturated networks. Additionally, we present a two-stage solution approach for handling the complex issues in large-scale networks. Experimental results from both small-scale artificial networks and the real-world Beijing URT network validate the efficacy of our proposed passenger rescheduling strategies in mitigating disruptions. Specifically, when compared to scenarios with no travel guidance during disruptions, our strategies achieve a substantial reduction in total passenger travel time by 29.7% and 50.9% respectively, underscoring the effectiveness in managing unexpected disruptions.

Abstract:Urban rail transit is the backbone of urban transportation, and thus it is significant to understand its vulnerability, i.e., whether the system can still maintain normal operations when facing operational disturbances with different magnitudes. To this end, this paper proposes a network vulnerability assessment method with the joint consideration of static network topology and dynamic travel demand. The method includes an accessibility-based identification of station importance with time-varying passenger demand and a new dynamic vulnerability evaluation index. An empirical analysis is carried out by taking the rail transit system of Beijing, China as an example. Results show that the distribution of high-importance stations varies with the time of day, affected by both static topology and hourly-changing passenger flow. Under the disturbance of operation delay, the impact of high-importance stations on the network vulnerability changes with the increase of delayed travel demand. It is also found that some stations that serve as bridges (i.e., reasonable paths link the origin station and destination) and are visited by large passenger flow have the greatest impact on network vulnerability. Network performance degradation is obviously segmented and stratified in the case of interval continuous failure. The disruption between different lines is the main reason for system performance degradation, and some important stations within the line will act as catalysts to accelerate the performance degradation. This method provides a reference for measuring dynamic passenger flow-related network vulnerability and supplies the field with a new vulnerability evaluation index.
The Influence of Ridership Weighting on Targeting and Recovery Strategies for Urban Rail Rapid Transit Systems

Abstract:The resilience of urban rapid transit systems (URTs) to a rapidly evolving threat space is of much concern. Extreme rainfall events are both intensifying and growing more frequent under continuing climate change, exposing transit systems to flooding, while cyber threats and emerging technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles are exposing such systems to targeted disruptions. An imperative has emerged to model how networked infrastructure systems fail and devise strategies to efficiently recover from disruptions. Passenger flow approaches can quantify more dimensions of resilience than network science-based approaches, but the former typically requires granular data from automatic fare collection and suffers from large runtime complexities. Some attempts have been made to include accessible low-resolution ridership data in topological frameworks. However, there is yet to be a systematic investigation of the effects of incorporating low-dimensional, coarsely-averaged ridership volume into topological network science methodologies. We simulate targeted attack and recovery sequences using station-level ridership, four centrality measures, and weighted combinations thereof. Resilience is quantified using two topological measures of performance: the node count of a network's giant connected component (GCC), and a new measure termed the "highest ridership connected component" (HRCC). Three transit systems are used as case studies: the subways of Boston, New York, and Osaka. Results show that centrality-based strategies are most effective when measuring performance via GCC, while centrality-ridership hybrid strategies perform strongest by HRCC. We show that the most effective strategies vary by network characteristics and the mission goals of emergency managers, highlighting the need to plan for strategic adversaries and rapid recovery according to each city's unique needs.

Abstract:Abstract The characteristics of multi-standard rail transit systems coexistence of regional rail transit increase the risk probability of rail transit network. At the same time, the interaction between multi-standard systems and the integrity of the rail transit network increase the risk impact area and the risk consequences. Therefore, the risk bottleneck identification for regional rail transit is of great significance to realize targeted protection and optimization of key risk points and effectively reduce the global risk of the transportation system. In view of the fact that the existing risk assessment methods of rail transit network mostly use index fusion, which cannot reflect the global structural risk and cannot effectively evaluate the global risk bottlenecks of the rail transit network, this paper proposes a method for identifying global structural risk bottlenecks of regional rail transit based on sensitivity analysis. First, an assessment index for the global structural risk of the rail transit network is established, and then sensitivity analysis is used to assess the impact of the failure and optimization of station or section on the global structural risk of the rail transit network, so as to provide decision support for the protection and optimization of the rail transit network risk bottlenecks. Finally, the regional rail transit in Chengdu-Chongqing area is taken as an example to verify the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:Urban rail transit networks have become the most important traffic modal and greatly improve the traffic environment and travel efficiency of metropolis, and the critical station identification and robustness assessment of urban rail transit networks have become more and more important. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive vote-rank ( CVR ) algorithm to identify the critical stations, and adopt mutual information and k -center clustering algorithm to analyze the similar characteristics of passenger flow on different dates of urban rail transit networks. Meanwhile, Shanghai metro network is chosen as the example and we find that the optimal classification of passenger flow on different dates is 2 categories, and the passenger flows have the significant differences between conventional day and unconventional day. The results show that the critical stations on unconventional day are farther from the city center than the critical stations on conventional day, and some critical stations locate in the suburbs on unconventional day. Moreover, we study the structural and functional robustness characteristics of urban rail transit networks subjected to continuous malicious attacks to the top critical nodes, and the results show that Shanghai metro network has the worse robustness subjected to malicious attacks. Compared with the existed methods, we can declare that the proposed CVR algorithm is the most effective method for critical station identification and robustness assessment among the discussed methods in this paper, and this study will provide theoretical and practical support for the safe operation of urban rail transit networks.

Abstract:The complex network theory can be used to find the characteristics of rail transit network. Indicators like node degree of complex network and average path length etcetera are chosen to analyze rail transit network, and to calculate complex network topology attributes, such as clustering coefficients, etcetera. As for the research of network reliability, to evaluate the network reliability under selective attack modes and random attack modes by improving and proposing new evaluation index of reliability, and finding out key sites and important lines of Chengdu rail transit network to provide better reference for the actual construction, operation and maintenance.
