Graphene nanofluid is well known for its easy synthesis, longer suspension stability, higher heat conductivity, lower erosion, corrosion, larger surface area/volume ratio, and lower demand for pumping power. This article is an audit of experimental outcome about the preparation and stability of graphene-based nanofluids. Numerous researches to prepare and stabilize graphene-based nanofluids have been developed, and it is indispensable to create a complete list of the approaches. This research work outlines the advancement on preparation and assessment methods and the techniques to enhance the stability of graphene nanofluids and outlook prospects.

Abstract:Graphene derivatives are promising nanomaterials for producing nanofluids due to their excellent intrinsic characteristics. Among thermophysical profile, and in addition to thermal properties, relevant property to evaluate the potential of graphene-based nanofluids as efficient and reliable heat transfer fluids is viscosity, and rheological behavior in a wider sense. Therefore, the aim of this review paper is to give a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge and results about the rheological properties of graphene-based nanofluids. After a brief description of the most common methods used for fabricating or extracting graphene derivatives, the main steps of graphene-based nanofluids preparation are introduced. Then, literature results on Newtonian/non-Newtonian behavior as well as variations in apparent dynamic viscosity of suspensions containing graphene derivatives are reviewed, analyzing the effects of shear rate, concentration, base fluids and temperature. Such an analysis is performed distinguishing the different types of graphene derivatives, namely graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, pristine graphene, graphene quantum dots, functionalized and doped graphene. Also, the impact of base fluid, temperature, concentration and surfactant on viscosity enhancement of graphene-based nanofluids is graphically and newly presented and discussed. In addition, the current models for viscosity prediction or correlation of those nanofluids are detailed. Finally, challenges and future works are summarized.

Abstract:Nanofluids, which are fluid suspensions of nanoparticles, have attracted significant interest because of their remarkable features and wide range of possible applications. The selection of nanofluid materials is essential in determining the performance and appropriateness for particular applications. On the other hand, it has been extensively reported in the literature that carbon-based nanoparticles exhibit the highest thermal conductivity compared to other kinds of nanoparticles. Thus, when these nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed in a base fluid, the resulting suspension will theoretically achieve significantly better effective thermal conductivity compared to its counterpart. This review compiles the previous findings from various research articles that discuss a varied selection of carbon based nanofluid nanoparticles, including graphene, carbon nanotube (CNTs) and their hybrid. The discussion includes the measurement processes, methods of improvement, and the effect of dispersion stability on the thermal conductivity properties of the suspension. Research indicates that surfactants, as well as single and hybrid nanofluids, have a substantial impact on the dispersion, stability, and thermal properties of nanofluids. The density of nanofluids is a vital factor that affects both their stability and the long-term viability of thermal systems.

Abstract:Stability issue is a core factor to appraise the performance of nanofluids since it heavily associates with its practical utilization scope in a range of occasions. To improve the static stability of graphene filled nanofluids, in this work, a quaternary ammonium species containing polymer wrapped graphene (PWG) was synthesized via an in-situ polymerization protocol. Stability study reveals that this quaternary ammonium group plays an important role in adjusting the compatibility between graphene and base solvent owing to its amphiphilic characteristic. The as-prepared nanofluids exhibit an outstanding stability that it can be kept uneventfully in a term longer than 200 days. Further study shows that these nanofluids not only afford an enhancement in static thermal conductivity enhancement, but also, more importantly, give an almost doubled convective heat transfer coefficient in a flow condition by filling only 0.4 wt% of PWG which opens an important avenue for the application graphene filled nanofluids.

Abstract:Nanofluid is a suspension of nanoparticles (at least one dimension less than 100 nm) in a basefluid having superior thermal, rheological and wettability properties, which improves the performance of several applications i.e. heat transfer, lubrication, drug delivery and enhanced oil recovery etc. However, the critical bottleneck for widespread use of nanofluid is its stability. The instability of nanofluid leads to reduction in system performance with passage of time. Addressing the long term stability of nanofluid and its reusability are essential requirements for successful industrial use. This article focuses on different aspects of nanofluid stability starting from the preparation stage till implementation in practical applications. Specific attention has been given on nanofluid stability as a function of operating conditions i.e. high temperature, pressure, confinement, composition, salinity, external magnetic field and shear rate etc. in several applications i.e. heat transfer, microfluidics, lubrication, enhanced oil recovery and drag reduction etc. It is expected that the present review will provide guidance and contribute towards wider adoption of nanofluid in practical applications. Future research on stability issues related to techno-economic performance, hybrid nanofluid, quantum dot, hybrid stabilization technique, wall effect in microfluidics and porous media will further enhance the usability of nanofluid in widespread practical systems.

Abstract:In response to rising power demands and cooling loads in thermal systems, new technologies have been adopted to enhance heat transfer characteristics. A suspended nanosized particle that has high thermal conductivity in conventional heat transfer fluids is called a nanofluid. Several studies have investigated the effects of graphene-based nanofluids on thermophysical parameters such as thermal conductivity and viscosity. The paper also highlighted potential benefits of nanofluid in terms of energy conservation, reduction of material consumption and sustainability in the preparation of high thermal conductivity fluid. Also, many numerical and experimental studies have been done for heat transfer characteristics using different graphene-based nanofluids. This review examines the preparation, thermophysical properties, and heat transfer characteristics of graphene-based nanofluids, including graphene nanoplatelets, graphene oxide, and graphene composites, across various thermal systems.

Abstract:Nanofluids which consist of nanoparticles added to conventional fluids (or base fluids) are considered as promising heat transfer fluids. Compared to metal, metal oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes, graphene with its extremely high intrinsic thermal conductivity became the best candidate to design graphene-based nanofluids. Such nanofluids have the potential to develop highly-efficient heat transfer fluids to reduce loss of heat, enhance heat transfer performances and cooling rates. Over the last ten years, graphene-based nanofluids have shown significant thermal conductivity enhancements, however optimisation of their efficiency remains the focus of many studies. The present review article discusses and analyses the thermal conductivity performances of different graphene-based nanofluids since 2010. The enhancement of thermal conductivity must meet the minimal graphene amount due to its production cost and because graphene nanoparticles induces a high viscosity in the nanofluid that leads to a higher energy consumption for the heat transfer systems. Unprecedented in the literature, this work proposes and develops a simple approach to quantitatively compare the enhancement of the measured thermal conductivity of the graphene-based nanofluids. The present study takes into account the amount of graphene in the nanofluid required to reach the reached thermal conductivity enhancement. The thermal conductivity performance parameter then introduced may become a reference tool in the nanofluid community. It could be useful to determine the optimal preparation conditions without compromising the superior thermal performances. Such analysis could be as well extended to other nanofluid systems.

Abstract:Due to excellent thermal performance and application prospects, nanofluids are attracting many researchers to pay more attention to new types of heat transfer fluids. However, previous studies have focused on the effects of nanofluids on thermophysical properties without considering the limitation of dispersion stability in practical applications. Excellent nanofluid stability is judged with the zeta potential value above 30 mV. Unstable nanofluids block the fluid flow in heat exchanger channels, which reduces the system performance by over 23 %. Based on a systematic review of improving nanofluid stability, this research discusses the preparation, characterisation, influencing factor, dispersion mechanism, and dispersion method on nanofluid stability. Four methods for improving nanofluid stability are summarised. The nanofluid is stable at pH values between 4 and 9 b y controlling its ionic concentration. The nanofluid concentration is required below 2 % to improve the repulsion between nanoparticles. The stability of the nanofluid is affected by the type and amount of the surfactant, which fails to improve the nanofluid stability at temperature above 60 degrees C. In addition, the molecular forces between the mixed nanofluids enhance the stability of the nanofluid. This review examines the variation patterns of nanofluid stability and the effect of stability on heat transfer. It is expected to identify some opportunities and demonstrate future challenges in both the in-lab research and the commercialisation of nanofluids.

Abstract:Graphene is having high thermal conductivity which makes it a suitable candidate for heat transfer applications. The main challenge for the utilization of graphene-based nanofluids is an agglomeration of graphene nanosheets. To overcome the agglomeration of graphene, surfactants are used in an aqueous solution. The various surfactants used for the stable dispersion of graphene are reviewed. In addition, the thermophysical and rheological properties of graphene nanofluids are highlighted the physical and chemical techniques are reviewed to stabilize the graphene with the aid of surfactants. The application of an aqueous solution of graphene for heat transfer is highlighted in this review.
Colloidal stability of graphene in aqueous medium: a theoretical approach through molecular dynamics

Abstract:Context: Graphene has been used as reinforcement of polymeric nanocomposites to increase mechanical and electrical properties. Recently, graphene suspensions have been used for the development of nanofluids in automotive applications, where improvements in convection heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops have been reported. However, dispersions of graphene sheets in a polymeric matrix as well as in a solvent medium are difficult to achieve; that is because Van der Waals, [Formula: see text] and Coulombic interactions cause agglomerations. Surface chemical modifications have been considered as viable options to improve the graphene integration. In this work, we studied the colloidal stability of aqueous solutions of graphene sheets functionalized with (i) carboxylic groups, (ii) 3-amino-propyl tri-ethoxy silane (amphiphilic behavior), (iii) graphene oxide, and (iv) pristine graphene. Results show that the lower sedimentation velocity corresponds to the graphene functionalized with carboxylic groups, which presents the higher colloidal stability. However, the amphiphilic group enhances the interaction energy between graphene and the solvent; we believe that there is a threshold percentage of functionalization that improves the colloidal stability of graphene. Method: Transport properties of graphene solutions were estimated by using Non-Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics simulations to generate Poiseuille flow in an NVT ensemble. Simulations were developed in the LAMMPS code. The COMPASS Force Field was used for the graphene systems and the TIP3P for the water molecules. Bonds and angles of hydrogen atoms were kept rigid by using the shake algorithm. The molecular models were built through MedeA and visualized with the Ovito software.

Abstract:Graphene nanofluids have emerged as potential alternatives to improve the thermal efficiency of different engineering devices. However, their use in different applications that include polar liquids as base fluids is a problem due to the hydrophobic nature of graphene. In this study, we compared methods that use surfactants with those that employ surface oxidation (surfactant-free) to improve the dispersion of graphene in water and its stability over time. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS), at their critical micelle concentration in water, were used as surfactants to prepare commercial graphene dispersions, and the electrochemical method was adopted to synthesize GO. Additionally, the effect of the concentration of electrolyte (sodium sulfate, Na2SO4) on oxygen functionalities in GO synthesis was evaluated and associated with nanofluid stability. The nanomaterials were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Nanofluid stability was evaluated using the zeta potential and UV–VIS spectroscopy. The results show that the electrolyte has an important effect on the oxidation degree of the GO obtained: a high electrolyte concentration (0.5 M) produced the highest oxygen functionalities. Finally, the stability of the nanofluid produced with the electrolyte at 0.5 M was similar to that of the graphene nanofluid prepared with SDBS as surfactant.Graphical

Abstract:Graphene was synthesized using a Hummers-Offeman method and three types of metal sources (Pd, Fe and W) were introduced to prepare metal (oxide)-graphene composites. The prepared metal (oxide)-graphene composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and Raman spectroscopy. Nanofluids containing metal (oxide)-graphene composites with a concentration of 1 mg/L were prepared using water as the base fluid. Among these three types of nanofluids containing metal (oxide)-graphene composites, Fe-graphene showed the best and most stable dispersion, highest thermal diffusivity and electrical conductivity.

Abstract:Nanofluid flow occurs in extensive applications, and hence has received widespread attention. The transition of nanofluids from laminar to turbulent flow is an important issue because of the differences in pressure drop and heat transfer between laminar and turbulent flow. Nanofluids will become unstable when they depart from the thermal equilibrium or dynamic equilibrium state. This paper conducts a brief review of research on the flow instability of nanofluids, including hydrodynamic instability and thermal instability. Some open questions on the subject are also identified.
Stability Study of Graphene Oxide Based Aqueous Nanofluids for Solar Absorption Application

Abstract:In this study, the stability of graphene oxide based aqueous nanofluids are tested under boiling–condensation conditions. The graphene oxide nanofluids remain very stable, and their transmittance in solar spectral region varies less than 6% after 630 g centrifugation for 3 h at 90°C without boiling. However, when undergoing boiling and condensation processes, the solar transmittance of the graphene oxide nanofluids declines quickly, from 38 to 4%, during the first 24 h of testing, before leveling out in the final 120 h of testing. A decrease in the fluid transmittance is due to the partial reduction of graphene oxide nanosheets, as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectrometer and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy technique measurements. It is surprising that thermal reduction of graphene oxide in aqueous fluids occurs at such a low temperature (~100°C), when undergoing boiling and condensation. This temperature is much lower than the previously reported thermal reduction temperature (180°C and above) without boiling. The low-temperature thermal reduction of graphene oxide may be attributed to the bubble cavitation associated with boiling in aqueous fluids.

Abstract:This study examined hybrid nanofluids of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and graphene oxide (GO) in terms of their stability and performance as a working fluid in a flat plate solar thermal collector. Instead of functionalisation, this experiment utilises the synergetic effect of GO, which stabilises GNP nanofluids by acting like an amphiphilic surfactant. Experimental results found that stability is significantly improved with a sufficiently high concentration of GO. Stability improved as the proportion of GO was increased. In particular, the sample with an equal 50:50 ratio of GNP and GO showed good stability in sedimentation measurements, retaining over 90% of its concentration over one month. Stability was also measured under working pipe flow conditions in a solar collector test rig. This type of data has not previously been reported in the literature. Measurement of the change in concentration showed that in addition to sedimentation, concentration loss can occur via an alternative mechanism: deposition of the nanoparticles inside the pipes. The pristine GNP sample lost over 80% of its concentration over one day of running in the test rig, despite showing moderate stability over one month under still conditions. This shows that measurement of stability in still conditions does not fully describe the stability of nanofluids intended to be working fluids in heat transfer. The sample with a 50:50 ratio of GNP and GO retained around 66% of its concentration over five days of running in the test rig, and the concentration seemed to stabilise, reaching equilibrium, implying no further decreases. Viscosity measurements showed a small increase. Despite the moderately encouraging stability results, however, solar collector testing showed no discernible change in heat transfer performance when using nanofluids compared to water, making these nanofluids unsuitable for this particular flat plate solar collector design.

Graphene-Based Nanofluids: Production Parameter Effects on Thermophysical Properties and Dispersion Stability

Abstract:In this study, the thermophysical properties and dispersion stability of graphene-based nanofluids were investigated. This was conducted to determine the influence of fabrication temperature, nanomaterial concentration, and surfactant ratio on the suspension effective properties and stability condition. First, the nanopowder was characterized in terms of crystalline structure and size, morphology, and elemental content. Next, the suspensions were produced at 10 °C to 70 °C using different concentrations of surfactants and nanomaterials. Then, the thermophysical properties and physical stability of the nanofluids were determined. The density of the prepared nanofluids was found to be higher than their base fluid, but this property showed a decrease with the increase in fabrication temperature. Moreover, the specific heat capacity showed very high sensitivity toward the graphene and surfactant concentrations, where 28.12% reduction in the property was achieved. Furthermore, the preparation temperature was shown to be the primary parameter that effects the nanofluid viscosity and thermal conductivity, causing a maximum reduction of ~4.9% in viscosity and ~125.72% increase in thermal conductivity. As for the surfactant, using low concentration demonstrated a short-term stabilization capability, whereas a 1:1 weight ratio of graphene to surfactant and higher caused the dispersion to be physically stable for 45 consecutive days. The findings of this work are believed to be beneficial for further research investigations on thermal applications of moderate temperatures.

Abstract:Nanofluids have recently attracted attention of many researchers due to their growing potential applications in heat transfer devices. They possess extraordinary thermal and rheological characteristics compared to the respective base fluids. However, the preparation of nanofluids and their dispersion stability is a matter of serious concern, several research investigations have been done in the present era to address these issues. Through this review article, an attempt has been made to critically analyze the published literature on the preparation and dispersion stability of different kinds of aqueous metal oxide nanofluids. In this context, general preparation and stabilization methods, types of instruments for stability inspection, as well as factors affecting stability of aqueous metal oxide nanofluids, are discussed in detail. The current research needs, possible solutions to research challenges in exploring uniformly dispersed nanofluids under optimized operating conditions is the heart of this review article. An effort has been made to determine the status as well as the possible future directions, the preparation and stability related research may take.

Abstract:In the present research work, we investigated the effect of loading mass concentrations (0.05%, 0.15%, and 0.25 mass %) and temperature (10–50 °C) on the thermal properties of graphene oxide-ethylene glycol (GO-EG) nanofluids. A two-step approach was adopted to prepare the GO-EG nanofluids with different mass proportions without any surfactant. The thermal kinetic analysis was performed by modulated DSC and TGA. Thermal stability and particle size distribution of the nanofluids were monitored by using UV–visible spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering. The experimental findings on the thermal transport characteristics of the as-prepared nanofluid samples are influenced by loading mass concentration, increasing temperature because of the high relative area of dispersed nanoparticles at higher particle concentration, dispersion quality of nanofluids. The thermal conductivity (TC) of GO-EG nanofluid shows an enhancement of 36.72% for (sample no. 3, i.e., GO 3) and shows a semi-linear dependence profile between temperature and TC, with increasing mass concentration due to the decrease in interfacial thermal resistance between GO and EG. The observed results are in good agreement with previously reported literature and reveal the promising prospect for usage as a state-of-the-art heat transport fluid in the coolant industry.

Abstract:Graphene is a honeycomb hexagonal two-dimensional (2D) crystal nanomaterial with a thickness of only 0.334 nm. It has been widely used and studied because of its ultra-thin 2D nano-characteristics and excellent electrical, thermal, optical, and mechanical properties. With the continuous in-depth study of graphene, the liquid-phase dispersion of graphene has also achieved breakthroughs. This review summarizes the research progress of the liquid-phase exfoliation mechanism, exfoliation method, stable dispersion mechanism, and dispersion method of graphene in recent years. The research situations of the Hamaker constant theory in exfoliation mechanism and Hansen solubility coefficient theory in stable dispersion mechanism are mainly discussed. The shortcomings of the research are summarized and analyzes the graphene liquid phase dispersed in the important challenge in the future. The stable dispersion method of graphene is also summarized. In the future, the π-π interaction will be the most potential method for studying graphene stabilization.
