Abstract:To increase iron (Fe) concentration in edible portions of staple food crops, an agronomic approach via foliar Fe-containing solutions might be sustainable and economical strategy; however, little information is available in the literature. So the present work was carried out to examine the effects of Fe in association with boron (B) foliar fertilization on Fe biofortification and the nutritional quality of rice (Oryza sativa L.) grain. The work was conducted in 2006 at the research experiment station at Zhejiang University on japonica rice 'Bing 98110' planted on a silty loam soil in pots. The following spray treatments were performed at rice anthesis: (1) control (the deionized water spray); (2) 0.1% (w/v) FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O; (3) 0.1% (w/v) Fe(II)-AA (Complex of 0.1% FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O and 0.4% compound amino acids; 18.6% N); (4) 0.2% (w/v) H3BO3 (boric acid, 17.5% B); (5) combined spray of 0.1% (w/v) FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O and 0.2% (w/v) H3BO3; (6) combined spray of 0.1% (w/v) Fe(II)-AA and 0.2% (w/v) H3BO3. Foliar Fe and B complex application did biofortify Fe concentration and other measured nutritive values in polished rice. Compared to the control, Fe concentration in seed increased significantly 18.9% with the combination of foliar Fe(II)-AA and B, Zn content increased significantly 26.7%, and protein and total 16 amino acids, such as lysine, threonine, and arginine that were essential for human nutrition as well as glutamic acid, aspartic acid, valine, leucine, and phenylalanine, etc., also increased markedly by 30.9% and by 37.0%, respectively.
The Iron Contents of the Transgenic Rice Expressing a Pea Ferritin Gene As Affected by the Foliar Application of Ferrous Sulphate

Abstract:Using homozygous transgenic rice line (Fer34)transformed with a pea ferritin gene and its control rice Xiushui 11 as materials, variations in the accumulation of the iron content in the iron-rich transgenic lines (Fer34)and Xiushui 11 were compared. The results showed that the Fer34 line had a stronger capacity to accumulate the iron contents than the control, but the high iron contents were dramatically affected by the growing environment such as soil and climate. Foliar application of ferrous sulphate at filling stage increased the iron contents significantly, but had no negative effect on the grain appearance, eating quality and starch rapid visco analyzer (RVA)parameters. Therefore, the technical practice of using transgenic iron-rich transgenic rice in combination with foliar application of ferrous sulphate at filling stage facilitated the production of the iron- rich rice, which helped to solve the problem of iron nutrition deficiency in human.

Abstract:Iron (Fe) deficiency in humans caused by inadequate dietary intake is a global nutritional problem. A glass house pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of foliar FeSO4 containing applications on concentrations of Fe, Zn, and Fe bioavailability in polished rice among five rice cultivars. The results showed that foliar application of FeSO4, FeSO4, plus nicotianamine..(NA), and FeSO4 plus NA with ZnSO4 increased the grain Fe concentration by 16.79%, 29.9%, and 27.08%, respectively. The grain Fe bioavailability also increased by foliar application of FeSO4, FeSO4 plus NA, and FeSO4 plus NA with ZnSO4 these represent increases of 12.63%, 20.86%, and 18.75% respectively, Foliar FeSO4 containing applications improved the Fe bioavailability and might be attributed to the reduction of phytic acid and the increase of Fe concentration in polished rice. Addition of ZnSO4 to foliar Fe application increased both Fe and Zn,content without altering Fe content and bioavailability. In addition, the cultivar difference in Fe and Zn concentration was observed and may be due to the genetic Control of leaf absorption and seed deposition of foliar application. Furthermore, the cultivar, difference in Fe bioavailability observed might be attributed to the variation of grain Fe, phytic acid, and total phenolics contents among the five rice cultivars. The results suggested that foliar FeSO4 containing applications represent a promising agricultural approach to reduce Fe deficiency in countries Where polished rice is extensively consumed.

Abstract:The available literature on whether or not foliar iron (Fe)-containing solutions can be one of the sustainable and low-cost strategies to increase Fe concentration in edible portions of staple food crops consisted of a few previous studies of Fe in plants, and mainly focused on Fe-deficiency remedies. Our experiment was carried out to examine the effects of foliar Fe-containing solutions on Fe enrichment and on the nutritional, cooking, and eating qualities of polished rice of the japonica 'Bing 98110' planted on a powdery loam soil under pot conditions. The results showed that Fe concentration in polished rice could be enriched with foliar Fe(II)-amino acids [the main formulation was the complex of 0.1% (w/v) FeSO4 center dot 7H2O and 0.4% (w/v) compound amino acids, 18.6% N] application. Compared with the control, Fe concentration increased significantly, by 88.0%. Meanwhile, the positive effects on Zn concentration and protein and amino acid content improvement were found with boric acid (H3BO3, B) added to Fe(II)-amino acids foliar application. In detail, Zn concentration significantly increased (19.6%), and protein and lysine were increased significantly by 30.1 and 35.1%, respectively. Also the cooking and eating qualities were improved with foliar Fe(II)-amino acids and B compound spray.
Effect of Iron and Nitrogen Mixed Fertilizers on the Content of Fe, Zn, Ca, Mg and Protein in Brown Rice

Abstract:Most research on foliar application of Fe has focused on the alleviation of iron deficiencies of the plants up to now.There was no substantial literature available on the effect of iron,fertilizer applied as a foliar spray,on the concentrations of iron and other micro and macro nutrients within the crop seeds.So the effects of foliar application of ferrous sulphate,amino acid and urea mixed fertilizers on the Fe accumulation and on the content of Zn,Ca,Mg and the crude protein in brown rice of indica 'Zhenong 952' were studied using pot experiment.The results showed that the different mixed fertilizers of Fe and N had distinct effects on the accumulation of Fe,Zn,Ca and Mg and on the content of the crude protein in brown rice.Among the mixed fertilizers,the best effect was observed in the treatment 8 with 0.1%FeSO4·7H2O+0.4%Amino acid+0.2%Urea,and the iron concentration in brown rice was enhanced to 10.28 mg·kg-1 and there was a significant difference compared to the control(6.52 mg·kg-1),the concentration of Zn,Ca and Mg in 'Zhenong 952' brown rice were also improved by 12.45%,12.77% and 5.82% respectively,and the crude protein was increased by 11.98% compared to the control.So the nutritional quality in brown rice was improved.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Foliar sprays of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) fertilisers are known to be an effective way to improve Fe and Zn concentrations in rice grain. However, results can differ significantly among different rice cultivars and/or types of foliar fertiliser. In this study, several Fe-rich rice cultivars were used to identify an effective foliar fertiliser for optimal Fe and Zn enrichment of rice grain. RESULTS: Foliar Fe amino acid (Fe-AA) fertiliser significantly improved the Fe concentration in brown rice of most cultivars. Compared with the control, the average Fe concentration in all tested cultivars was increased by 14.5%. The average Fe concentration was increased by 32.5% when 1% (w/v) nicotianamine (NA) was added to Fe-AA, while the average Zn concentration was increased by 42.4% when 0.5% (w/v) ZnSO4 center dot 7H(2)O was added to Fe-AA. CONCLUSION: The results suggested that NA at a suitable concentration added to Fe-AA fertiliser could accelerate Fe accumulation in rice grain. A relatively low concentration of ZnSO4 center dot 7H(2)O added to Fe-AA significantly increased Fe and Zn accumulation in rice grain. The study identified some useful foliar fertilisers for enhancing the levels of Fe and Zn in selected Fe-rich rice cultivars. (C) 2012 Society of Chemical Industry
Biofortification and Bioavailability of Rice Grain Zinc As Affected by Different Forms of Foliar Zinc Fertilization

Abstract:Background: Zinc (Zn) biofortification through foliar Zn application is an attractive strategy to reduce human Zn deficiency. However, little is known about the biofortification efficiency and bioavailability of rice grain from different forms of foliar Zn fertilizers.Methodology/Principal Findings: Four different Zn forms were applied as a foliar treatment among three rice cultivars under field trial. Zinc bioavailability was assessed by in vitro digestion/Caco-2 cell model. Foliar Zn fertilization was an effective agronomic practice to promote grain Zn concentration and Zn bioavailability among three rice cultivars, especially, in case of Zn-amino acid and ZnSO4. On average, Zn-amino acid and ZnSO4 increased Zn concentration in polished rice up to 24.04% and 22.47%, respectively. On average, Zn-amino acid and ZnSO4 increased Zn bioavailability in polished rice up to 68.37% and 64.43%, respectively. The effectiveness of foliar applied Zn-amino acid and ZnSO4 were higher than Zn-EDTA and Zn-Citrate on improvement of Zn concentration, and reduction of phytic acid, as a results higher accumulation of bioavailable Zn in polished rice. Moreover, foliar Zn application could maintain grain yield, the protein and minerals (Fe and Ca) quality of the polished rice.Conclusions: Foliar application of Zn in rice offers a practical and useful approach to improve bioavailable Zn in polished rice. According to current study, Zn-amino acid and ZnSO4 are recommended as excellent foliar Zn forms to ongoing agronomic biofortification.
Iron and Zinc Biofortification in Polished Rice and Accumulation in Rice Plant (oryza Satival.) As Affected by Nitrogen Fertilization

Abstract:With focus on maximizing grain yield in rice (Oryza sativa L.) production, especially in China, information available in the literature on how nitrogen (N) fertilization of rice crops affects biofortification of iron (Fe) and (Zn) in grains is limited. The objective of the experiment was to investigate to what degree application of N fertilizer attained the optimum Fe and Zn concentration in rice grains as well as grain yield under pot conditions. Two rice cultivars of the indica 'Zhenong 952' and the japonica 'Bing 98110', grown widely in the area of the Yangtse River Delta in southern China, and fertilized with four rates of urea (0,0.50, 1.00 and 1.50 g N pot(-1)), were investigated. The results showed that, in the pot trails, the optimum application of N alone on rice crops could increase the concentration of Fe in the polished rice. By considering both health and commercial reasons, when N application reached 1.00 g pot(-1), the optimal Fe and Zn concentrations were attained as well as grain yield for 'Zhenong 952', and for 'Bing 98110' the optimum N application was 1.50 g pot(-1). Fe appeared not to be so easily mobilized as Zn in the plant. The ratio of Zn deposited in the brown rice was about 40% of total Zn in the plant, irrespective of N application. However, deposited Fe was only about 3% of total Fe. Fe concentration in brown rice was only about that in rice husk, 1/5 that in peduncles, 1/10 that in leaves, and only a little more than 1% of that in roots. These results suggested if we wanted to increase the amount of Fe in grains the translocation mechanism of Fe in rice plant must be clearly understood first.

Abstract:Iron and zinc are critical micronutrients for human health. Approximately two billion people suffer from iron and zinc deficiencies worldwide, most of whom rely on rice (Oryza sativa) and wheat (Triticum aestivum) as staple foods. Therefore, biofortifying rice and wheat with iron and zinc is an important and economical approach to ameliorate these nutritional deficiencies. In this review, we provide a brief introduction to iron and zinc uptake, translocation, storage, and signaling pathways in rice and wheat. We then discuss current progress in efforts to biofortify rice and wheat with iron and zinc. Abstract:Folates deficiency is a global public health problem, has profound effects on human health. Rice is the most important sta-ple crops in the world, and provides most population energy intake in China. Since rice seeds contain very little folates, enhancing fo-lates content in rice would be a cost-effective way to solve folates deficiency in China and some countries and regions where the sta-ple crop is rice. This review introduced the structure and physiological functions of folates, and the influences of folates deficiency. The biosynthetic pathway in plant and progress in folates-biofortification rice were also reported.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Because only grain yield has been investigated, the influence of fertilisation by N on the concentration of Fe and Zn in polished rice has been overlooked in China. So, using the rice cultivars of the indica Zhenong 952 and the japonica Bing 98110, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the amounts of N fertiliser (applied as urea at rates of 0, 0.50, 1.00 and 1.50 g N pot(-1)) that would lead to the optimum Fe and Zn concentrations in polished rice as well as grain yield. RESULTS: For Zhenong 952, the optimal Fe and Zn concentration as well as grain yield was attained at a N application of 1.00 g pot(-1); for Bing 98110 the optimum N was 1. 50 g pot(-1). The ratio of Zn deposited in brown rice was about 40% of the total Zn in the plant irrespective of N application. However, Fe was only about 3%. Fe concentration in brown rice was approximately one-half of the rice husk, one-fifth of the peduncles, and one-tenth of the leaves, and a little more than 1% of the root. CONCLUSION: The optimum N application, alone, on rice crops could increase Fe concentration in polished rice, but had an adverse effect for Zn. Assessing Yield, Quality and Nutrient Use Efficiency of Rice (Oryza sativa L.) with Agronomic Iron Bio-fortification

Abstract:To assess the impact of foliar iron nutrition on the yield, quality, and nutrient utilization of rice variety SR-4 (Oryza sativa L.), a field experiment was conducted during the Kharif season of 2019 at the Crop Research Farm of the Division of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir Wadura. The experiment involved four levels of iron (0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1%) applied through three different sources (FeSO4. 7H2O, Na-Fe EDTA, and Ferric chloride), along with a control, arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Results showed that applying FeSO4.7H2O at 1% significantly increased crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), grain yield, straw yield, biological yield, iron content in brown rice and straw, as well as iron uptake. However, iron chelate at 0.75% demonstrated the highest harvest index. Iron chelate at 0.25% exhibited the highest iron use efficiency, while FeSO4.7H2O at 1% resulted in the highest protein content. No significant difference was observed among treatments regarding amylose content. Consequently, it was determined that applying FeSO4.7H2O at 1% could be a promising strategy for agronomic biofortification with iron to improve both yield and quality of rice in the temperate conditions of Kashmir valley.
Effect of Ferrous Sulfate Fortification in Germinated Brown Rice on Seed Iron Concentration and Bioavailability

Abstract:Rice is the staple food for more than half of the world's population and, hence, the main source of a vital micronutrient, zinc (Zn). Unfortunately, the bioavailability of Zn from rice is very low not only due to low content but also due to the presence of some antinutrients such as phytic acid. We investigated the effect of germination and Zn fortification treatment on Zn bioavailability of brown rice from three widely grown cultivars using the Caco-2 cell model to find a suitable fortification level for producing germinated brown rice. The results of this study showed that Zn content in brown rice increased significantly (p < 0.05) as the external Zn concentrations increased from 25 to 250 mg/L. In contrast, no significant influence (p > 0.05) on germination percentage of rice was observed when the Zn supply was lower than 150 mg/L. Zn fortification during the germination process has a significant impact on the Zn content and finally Zn bioavailability. These findings may result from the lower molar ratio of phytic acid to Zn and higher Zn content in Zn fortified germinated brown rice, leading to more bioavailable Zn. Likewise, a significant difference (p < 0.05) was found among cultivars with respect to the capacity for Zn accumulation and Zn bioavailability; these results might be attributed to the difference in the molar ratio of phytic acid to Zn and the concentration of Zn among the cultivars evaluated. Based on global intake of Zn among the world population, we recommend germinated brown rice fortified with 100 mg/L ZnSO4 as a suitable concentration to use in the germination process, which contains high Zn concentration and Zn bioavailability. In the current study, the cultivar Bing91185 fortified with Zn through the germination process contained a high amount as well as bioavailable Zn, which was identified as the most promising cultivar for further evaluation to determine its efficiency as an improved source of Zn for target populations.

Abstract:In a pot experiment, effects of N fertilizer application on the concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in shoot of rice and the quality of brown rice were studied. In the treatments with N fertilizer application, the concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in most parts of rice shoot increased compared with control (no N fertilizer application). This indicated that the transportation ability of microelements from root to shoot in rice was improved with N fertilizer application. Effect of N fertilizer on IR68144 was similar to that of on IR64, but the concentrations of the microelements in plant differed, suggesting that the characteristic expression of the two rice genotypes was not controlled by the amount of N fertilizer supplied. The concentrations of those microelements in brown rice increased at first and then decreased with increasing N fertilizer application, reaching the highest at 160 kg/ha, at which the Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn concentrations in brown rice increased by 28.96%, 41.34%, 58.31% and 16.0% for IR64, and by 22.16%, 13.75%, 8.75% and 20.21% for IR68144 compared with control, respectively. Moreover, N fertilizer promoted the accumulation of protein, decreased the accumulation of amylose in grain, and enhanced gel consistency of brown rice. These results indicate that appropriate N fertilizer management could increase micronutrient contents in grain and improve nutrition quality of rice.
Success to iron biofortification of wheat grain by combining both plant and microbial genetics

Abstract:<p>Iron biofortification of crops, like wheat, is an attractive strategy to cope with iron deficiency causing hidden hunger. Several recent studies dissected the genetics controlling iron concentrations in wheat grain, and expanded our understanding of iron accumulation in wheat grains. However, successful breeding of iron-rich wheat cultivar is limited based on plant genetics. Along with the wide appreciation of wheat-associated microbes, it is evidenced that microbes have a significant effect on iron concentration in grain and impacted plant genetics. These microbes, together called the plant microbiome, lived in either the rhizosphere (rhizobacteria) or the inner tissues of wheat (endophytes). They have complex genetics and influenced iron uptake, remobilization, accumulation and bioavailability, thereby either direct or indirectly contributed to grain iron biofortification in wheat. Although in rice it has been possible to exceed (60∼140μg Fe/g rice grain) the targeted iron biofortification requirement of 59μg Fe/g cereal grain, most wheat lines only reach 20-40μg Fe/g wheat grain. In our opinion, it is necessary to combine both plant and microbial genetics for successful iron biofortification in wheat. Application of microbes, especially engineered endophytes incorporated with plant genes controlling iron accumulation may be an efficient and feasible routine for iron biofortification in wheat.</p>

The objectives of the current field experiment were to evaluate the effects of the foliar application of 0.5, 1, and 1.5 kg ha −1 of Zn and Fe glycine amino acid chelates and ZnSO 4 on rice grain yield, protein, Zn, and Fe content of head rice (Hashemi cultivar) under both in the recommended and 1⁄2 of the recommended dose of NPK. The highest increase in the grain yield was recorded at 0.5 kgha −1 Fe-glycine amino acid chelate by about 29.2%. The maximum increase in protein and Zn content of head rice were recorded at 1.5 kg ha −1 of glycine amino acid-Zn chelate by about 10.5 and 22.3%, respectively. The most effective treatment to enhance the Fe content of head rice was the foliar application of 1.5 kg ha −1 of glycine amino acid-Fe chelate by about 32.6%. Interestingly, the foliar application of 1 kg ha −1 Zn-glycine amino acid chelate plus 1 kg ha −1 Fe-glycine amino acid chelate at the plots that received 1⁄2 of recommended NPK increased the grain yield, and protein, Zn and Fe content of head rice compared to control by about 7%, 18.5, 7.5, and 26.2, respectively. Therefore, regardless of rates and types, foliar application of Zn and/or Fe could enhance both rice yield, protein, Zn, and Fe content of head rice both in plots that received recommended and 1⁄2 of the recommended dose of NPK.

Abstract:Zinc (Zn) deficiency is an enormous challenge to human health, particularly where rice is the principal food as it is inherently low in bioavailable Zn. Recent research has demonstrated the worth of biofortification of food-crops, particularly in regions with low phytoavailable Zn levels in the soils, to improve the rice grain Zn concentration. We tested different Zn fertilizer management methods for leading upland (rainfed) rice genotypes of north-eastern India to assess their potential to improve Zn-use efficiency, grain biofortification and yield. Of the three tested genotypes, the Bhalum-3 achieved 15.7–25% higher grain yield and 15.3–30.5% higher partial factor productivity over the Bhalum-1 and Bhalum-5 varieties, respectively. All three rice genotypes achieved statistically similar rice grain Zn concentrations (33.8–34.3 mg kg −1 ). Applying Zn as zinc sulfate foliar spray increased grain and straw yield by 16.3% and 18.8% respectively, relative to the control treatment. Applying Zn fertilizer (either as a foliar spray or into soil) increased grain Zn concentration relative to that of the control treatment; maximum biofortification was achieved with foliar application (37.9 mg kg −1 ), where the Zn concentration in grains was 29% higher than the control. Furthermore, the highest hulling (79%), milling (67.9%) and head rice recovery (57.6%) rates were recorded under foliar Zn application. To increase nutritional security, improve Zn biofortification and achieve higher rice yields, particularly in soils with small phytoavailable Zn pools, we recommend the use of foliar Zn fertilizers for upland rice.

Abstract:Fertilizer-based biofortification is a strategy for combating worldwide malnutrition of zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and selenium (Se). Field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of foliar treatments on concentrations of Zn, Fe, Se, N and bioavailability of Zn and Fe in grains of three maize cultivars grown at three locations. We compared the efficacy of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), Zn complexed chitosan nanoparticles (Zn-CNPs), conventional ZnSO 4 and a cocktail solution (containing Zn, Fe and Se). All treatments were foliar-applied at rate of 452 mg Zn L –1 , plus urea. Applying ten-fold less Zn (at rate of 45.2 mg Zn L –1 ) plus urea in the form of ZnO-NPs, Zn-CNPs, or ZnSO 4 resulted in no increase, or a negligible increase, in grain Zn concentration compared with deionized water. By contrast, among the different Zn sources plus urea applied by foliar sprays, conventional ZnSO 4 was the most efficient in improving grain Zn concentration. Furthermore, foliar application of a cocktail solution effectively improved grain concentrations of Zn, Fe, Se and N simultaneously, without a grain yield trade-off. For example, the average grain concentrations were simultaneously increased from 13.8 to 22.1 mg kg –1 for Zn, from 17.2 to 22.1 mg kg –1 for Fe, from 21.4 to 413.5 ug kg –1 for Se and from 13.8 to 14.7 g kg –1 for N by foliar application of a cocktail solution. Because grain yield was significantly negatively correlated with grain nutrient concentrations, the magnitude of increase in grain concentrations of Zn and Fe was most pronounced in the maize cultivar with the lowest grain yield (Zhengdan958 grown in Linyi). Foliar application of a cocktail solution also significantly decreased the phytic acid (PA) concentration, ratios of PA/Fe and PA/Zn in grains, indicating an increased bioavailability of Fe and Zn for human health. In conclusion, we found that a foliar application of a cocktail solution including Zn, Fe, Se and N was most effective for biofortification, but that the grains with the lowest yield contained the greatest concentration of these elements. This finding highlights the need to breed maize varieties that are capable of achieving both high grain yield and high grain nutritional quality to address food security and human health challenges.
