Abstract:The authors investigate the energy, elastic modulus and normal modes of oscillation of flux line lattices. To deal with the long range nature of the flux line potential, the Ewald sum technique was used. The dependence of the normal modes as a function of the transverse wavevector in the 2D hexagonal Brillouin zone and the z wavevector kz is discussed in detail. They found two normal modes corresponding to the shear and the compression of the lattice. The frequencies of these two are usually very different from each other. Because of the long range nature of the potential, the compressive mode behaves like a plasma oscillation. At zero momentum the excitations are gapless, because the potentially is exponential in character at large distances. At a finite z wavevector they found that the transverse frequencies drop off rapidly as the transverse wavevector is increased. The elastic moduli are compared with those computed using a continuum approximation by Sudbo and co-workers. Quantitative differences are found in the low field, small k region as well as the high field, large k region.

Abstract:The authors have estimated the energy of a dislocation loop and found that it exhibits a strong temperature dependence and extrapolates to zero slightly above a temperature which they have previously identified as the melting temperature of the pure lattice. The magnitude of this energy and its dependence on the temperature, the magnetic field and the Landau-Ginzburg parameter all agree reasonably well with experimental estimates for the activation energy in thermally assisted flux flow at low currents. Estimates of the prefactor of the resistivity due to hopping of the flux loop also agree with experimental results. The result is the first quantitative estimate of the activation energy.
Nernst Effect In High Temperature Superconductor Bi2sr2cacu2o8+Delta

Abstract:The systematic measurements of resistivity, Hall effect, and Nernst effect were performed in slightly overdoped high-T-c superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. It was found that the Nernst signals produced by moving vortices persist up to a temperature T-0 of 105K which is much higher than the superconducting transition temperature T-c of 83K. The characteristic temperature T* for pseudogap opening is 120K determined from the deviation point of the linear temperature dependence of resistivity, but the onset temperature of superconducting fluctuations is 105K determined from both the magneto-resistance and Hall effect. These results imply that the superconducting fluctuations could account for the Nernst signal above T-c in the slightly overdoped high-T-c superconductors, in contrast to the case in the underdoped high-T-c superconductors.

Abstract:Results of the investigation of fluctuation phenomena in bulk type-II superconductors obtained in 1980 - 1984 years are compared with the analogous results obtained at the investigation of high-Tc superconductors (HTSC). It is shown the latter repeat in the main the results obtained before the HTSC discovery. It was discovered in 1981 year that a sharp change of resistive properties is observed below the second critical field, at H_{c4} < H_{c2}, in high quality samples of type-II superconductors. The same was repeated at investigation of high quality HTSC samples and was interpreted as vortex lattice melting. The difference of the (H_{c2} - H_{c4}) values for low- and high-Tc superconductors corresponds with the scaling law obtained in the lowest Landau level approximation. The linear approximation region above H_{c2}, the critical region and the Abrikosov state are considered. It is emphasized that the rigorous Ami-Maki theory should be used for description of paraconductivity in HTSC and "dirty" conventional superconductors. The approximation dependencies obtained from popular Aslamasov-Larkin, Hikami-Larkin and Lawrence-Doniac works do not have a validity region in these superconductors with wide critical region.

Abstract:The relationship between pseudogap and superconducting states of high-T_C superconductors has been a focus of interest for a long time. Measurements of the AC conductivity and the Nernst effect have detected vortex-like excitations in a certain temperature range above the superconducting transition temperature T_C. Meanwhile, the measurement of susceptibility by the torque technique has also detected weak diamagnetization induced by superconducting fluctuations above T_C. These findings strongly support the idea that the pseudogap phase is characterized by a finite pairing amplitude with strong phase fluctuations, and imply that the phase transition at T_C is driven by the loss of long-range phase coherence. We first briefly introduce the electronic phase diagram and pseuodgap state of high-T_C superconductors, the principle of the Nernst effect, and the measurement technique. Then the results of the Nernst effect for different high-T_C superconductors are reviewed and discussed. Related theoretical models are also discussed.

Abstract:Recent measurements of fluctuation diamagnetism in high-temperature superconductors show distinct features above and below T-c, which can not be explained by simple Gaussian fluctuation theory. Self-consistent calculation of magnetization in layered high-temperature superconductors, based on the Ginzburg-Landau-Lawrence-Doniach model and including all Landau levels is presented. The results agree well with the experimental data in a wide region around T-c, including both the vortex liquid below T-c and the normal state above T-c. The Gaussian fluctuation theory significantly overestimates the diamagnetism for strong fluctuations. It is demonstrated that the intersection point of magnetization curves appears in the region where the lowest Landau level contribution dominates and magnetization just below T-c is nonmonotonic. Our calculation supports the phase disordering picture of fluctuations above T-c.

Abstract:Precision lattice parameter in La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 single crystal superconductor has been measured in a wide temperature range between 4.2 K and room temperature by the X-ray Bond’s method. An anomalous lattice contraction associated with the appearance of the superconductivity was found in c-plane. Along c-direction, on the contrary, an anomalous expansion of the lattice was observed. The relative spontaneous change in the lattice parameter in c-plane was 2.3xl0-5 and that of c-axis was 1.5×l0-5 at 4.2 K. The temperature dependence of the spontaneous lattice change was compared with currently existing theories for high Tc superconductivity.
Calculations of Spin Fluctuation Spectral Functions $α^{2}F$ in High-Temperature Superconducting Cuprates

Abstract:Spin fluctuations have been proposed as a key mechanism for mediating superconductivity, particularly in high-temperature superconducting cuprates, where conventional electron-phonon interactions alone cannot account for the observed critical temperatures. Traditionally, their role has been analyzed through tight-binding based model Hamiltonians. In this work we present a method that combines density functional theory with a momentum- and frequency-dependent pairing interaction derived from the Fluctuation Exchange (FLEX) type Random Phase Approximation (FLEX-RPA) to compute Eliashberg spectral functions $\alpha ^{2}F(\omega )$ which are central to spin fluctuation theory of superconductivity. We apply our numerical procedure to study a series of cuprates where our extracted material specific $\alpha ^{2}F(\omega )$ are found to exhibit remarkable similarities characterized by a sharp peak in the vicinity of 40-60 meV and their rapid decay at higher frequencies. Our exact diagonalization of a linearized BCS gap equation extracts superconducting energy gap functions for realistic Fermi surfaces of the cuprates and predicts their symmetry to be $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ in all studied systems. Via a variation of on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ for the copper $d$-electrons we show that that the range of the experimental values of $T_{c}$ can be reproduced in this approach but is extremely sensitive to the proximity of the spin density wave instability. These data highlight challenges in building first-principle theories of high temperature superconductivity but offer new insights beyond previous treatments, such as the confirmation of the usability of approximate BCS-like $T_{c}$ equations, together with the evaluations of the material specific coupling constant $\lambda $ without reliance on tight-binding approximations of their electronic structures.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the magnetic structure of the half-ring flux line ended on the surface of a superconductor. The elemental modes for these half-ring flux lines are the half-ellipse flux lines ended on and perpendicular to the surface. The statistics of these half-ring flux lines is, in a certain degree, similar to the vortex-antivortex pairs in thin superconducting films. An abrupt change of the thermodynamic properties for this system takes place at a temperature lower than T-c. It is analogous to the KT transition in thin superconducting films in certain sense.

Abstract:Phase fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter play a larger role in the cuprates than in conventional BCS superconductors because of the low superfluid density of a doped insulator. In this paper, we analyze an XY model of classical phase fluctuations in the high temperature superconductors using a low-temperature expansion and Monte Carlo simulations. In agreement with experiment, the value of the superfluid density at temperature T=0 is a quite robust predictor of Tc, and the evolution of the superfluid density with T, including its T-linear behavior at low temperature, is insensitive to microscopic details.

Abstract:The behavior of the resistive superconducting transition in an epitaxial YBa2Cu3Oy superconducting film below T(c) in pulsed magnetic fields up to 7 T is reported. The transition in the field is not only broadened but also found to be time dependent. The variation of the resistance with the field is clearly irreversible for sufficiently large fields. This test experiment indicates that the transition broadening should be attributed to the flux motion, rather than fluctuations.

Abstract:The thermal fluctuations contribution to magnetization and magnetoconductivity of type-II layered superconductors is calculated in the framework of the Lawrence-Doniach model. For numerous high-temperature cuprate superconductors, it was discovered that the magnetization dependence on temperature in a wide range of fields exhibits an intersection point at a temperature slightly below Tc. We notice a similar intersection point of the magnetoconductivity curves at the approximate same temperature. The phenomenon is explained by strong (non-Gaussian) thermal fluctuations with interactions treated using a self-consistent theory. All higher Landau levels should be included. Dimensionality of the fluctuations is defined, and the two- to three-dimensional crossover is the key for the existence of intersection points.
Specific Heat and Thermal Conductivity of a Single Crystal-Like Bi{sub 2}sr{sub 2}cacu{sub 2}o{sub 8+x} High-Tc Superconductor

Abstract:The characteristics of specific heat and thermal conductivity for high-Tc superconductors are discussed. In order to understand the behaviors of a high-Tc superconductor, a single crystal-like Bi{sub 2}Sr{sub 2}CaCu{sub 2}O{sub 8+x} is selected as the sample, and its specific heat is measured by adiabatic calorimetry, while its thermal conductivity is measured by steady heat flow method via a stainless steel radiation shield. The measured specific heat C of the crystal shows a jump at Tc with {Delta}C / C {approx} 3.5%, while the measured thermal conductivity in the ab plane shows a minimum value at Tc which is qualitatively in good agreement with other work. The measuring skills are specially analyzed. In addition, the thermal expansion coefficient for the crystal-like high-Tc superconductor is also shown.

Abstract:This paper presents a calculation of the temperature dependence of resistivity due to the interaction between the conduction electrons and fractons existing in the normal state of high-T(c) superconductors. The results show that the resistivity from fracton scattering is nearly linear in temperature over a wide temperature range and rho(T) varies as T3dBAR/D-1 for fracton scattering at low temperature. The effect of fractons on strongly coupled superconductors deserves to be further investigated.

Abstract:In hole-doped high-Tc superconductors, thermal conductivity increases drastically just below Tc, which has been considered as a hallmark of a nodal gap. In contrast, such a coherence peak in thermal conductivity is not visible in electron-doped compounds, which may indicate a full-gap state such as a (d+is)-wave state. To settle this problem, we study the thermal conductivity in the Hubbard model using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation, which predicts that the nodal d-wave state is realized in both hole-doped and electron-doped compounds. The contrasting behavior of thermal conductivity in both compounds originates from the differences in the hot/cold spot structure. In general, a prominent coherence peak in thermal conductivity appears in line-node superconductors only when the cold spot exists on the nodal line.

Abstract:With the vibrating reed technique, we investigated the internal friction and resonant frequency of the high-T(c) superconductor compound HgBa2CuO4+x as a function of temperature. An internal friction peak, accompanied by a change of the resonant frequency, was observed below T(c) in an applied magnetic field, and as the magnetic field increased, the internal friction peak shifted towards lower temperature and its height increased. The depinning line determined from the peak temperature of internal friction was found to be higher than that of Bi-based samples but lower than that of Y-based ones. In addition, the probable position of oxygen atoms in the lattice was discussed and compared with Bi/Y-based superconductors according to the variation of internal friction with temperature at zero field below T(c).
Effect of Fluctuations on the NMR Relaxation Beyond the Abrikosov Vortex State

Abstract:The effect of fluctuations on the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate, $W$, is studied in a complete phase diagram of a 2D superconductor above the upper critical field line $H_{c2}(T)$ . In the region of relatively high temperatures and low magnetic fields, the relaxation rate $W$ is determined by two competing effects. The first one is its decrease in result of suppression of quasi-particle density of states (DOS) due to formation of fluctuation Cooper pairs (FCP). The second one is a specific, purely quantum, relaxation process of the Maki-Thompson (MT) type, which for low field leads to an increase of the relaxation rate. The latter describes particular fluctuation processes involving self-pairing of a single electron on self-intersecting trajectories of a size up to phase-breaking length $l_{\phi }$ which becomes possible due to an electron spin-flip scattering event at a nucleus. As a result, different scenarios with either growth or decrease of the NMR relaxation rate are possible upon approaching the normal metal - type-II superconductor transition. The character of fluctuations changes along the line $H_{c2}$ from the thermal long-wavelength type in weak magnetic fields to the clusters of rotating FCP in fields comparable to $H_{c2}$. We find that below the well-defined temperature $T^*_0\approx 0.6T_{c0}$, the MT process becomes ineffective even in absence of intrinsic pair-breaking. The small scale of FCP rotations ($\xi_{xy}$) in so high fields impedes formation of long (<$l_{\phi }$) self-intersecting trajectories, causing the corresponding relaxation mechanism to lose its efficiency. This reduces the effect of superconducting fluctuations in the domain of high fields and low temperatures to just the suppression of quasi-particle DOS, analogously to the Abrikosov vortex phase below the $H_{c2}$ line.

Abstract:In this paper we present a consolidated equation for all low-field transport coefficients, based on a reservoir approach developed for non-interacting quasiparticles. This formalism allows us to treat the two distinct types of charged (fermionic and bosonic) quasiparticles that can be simultaneously present, as for example in superconductors. Indeed, in the underdoped cuprate superconductors these two types of carriers result in two onset temperatures with distinct features in transport: T ∗, where the fermions first experience an excitation (pseudo)gap, and Tc, where bosonic conduction processes are dominant and often divergent. This provides the central goal of this paper, which is to address the challenges in thermoelectric transport that stem from having two characteristic temperatures as well as two types of charge carriers whose contributions can in some instances enhance each other and in others compete. We show how essential features of the cuprates (their bad-metal character and the presence of Fermi arcs) provide an explanation for the classic pseudogap onset signatures at T ∗ in the longitudinal resistivity, ρxx. Based on the fits to the temperaturedependent ρxx, we present the implications for all of the other thermoelectric transport properties.

Abstract:Using a phenomenological model for the normal state of high-T(c) superconductors, we have analyzed the angle-resolved photoemission spectra, and compared our results with the MFL theory and other microscopic models as well as with the experiments. In contrast to the MFL theory we predict that there exists a narrow lower energy region near the Fermi surface showing the conventional Fermi liquid behavior, which needs to be approved by fine experiments in future.
