Abstract:Anodic oxidation of p-methoxy-substituted phenols and electron-rich styrene or propenylbenzene derivatives affords in good yield trans-dihydrobenzofurans derived from a formal 1,3-oxidative cycloaddition of the phenol to the styrene derivative. The yield of product in this electrochemical oxidation depends upon the ratio of phenol to styrene derivative, current density, and to a lesser extent the amount of supporting electrolyte. While p-methoxyphenol and 4-methoxy-3-methylphenol give good yields of the dihydrobenzofurans using 1:1 molar ratio of reactants, 3,4-dimethoxyphenol requires a 3-4 molar excess of the styrene derivative for a comparable yield of product. Although 4-methoxy-1-naphthol shows yields comparable to p-methoxyphenol in the anodic cycloaddition reaction, 1- and 2-naphthol gave very low yields of product. Qualitatively, trans- and cis-1,2-dimethoxy-4-propenylbenzene show similar yields in the cycloaddition reaction. Many of these same substrates were examined using iodobenzene bis(trifluoroacetate) as oxidant, and the same products were formed as in the electrochemical oxidations noted above. However, for the reaction of 2-naphthol and 1,2-dimethoxy-4-propenylbenzene the iodobenzene bis(trifluoroacetate) oxidation gave a much better yield of the product. A mechanism involving reaction of a phenoxy radical-styrene radical cation pair is considered and discussed.

Abstract:A highly regio-and stereoselective Pd-catalyzed cascade reaction of allenoate adducts has been developed. Various allenoate adducts of phosphine-catalyzed addition of allenoates are found to be efficient substrates for the preparation of 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran. It is the first example of allenoate adducts used as ideal and practical precursors of hard-to-get functionalized 1,3-butadienes for heterocycle synthesis.

Abstract:Although various methods for the preparation of dibenzofurans are available, an efficient, general synthesis of dibenzofurans from benzofurans remains an unsolved problem. Herein, we provide the first benzannulation of readily prepared 2‐nitrobenzofurans with alkylidene malononitriles. This methodology enables facile assembly of a wide variety of highly functionalized dibenzofurans in moderate to excellent yields under metal‐free conditions. Gram‐scale synthesis and further elaborations of the product were succesfully performed, demonstrating synthetic utility of this method.

Abstract:A general route to either cis- or trans-2, 5-disubstituted tetrahydrofurans was described by using the nucleophilic addition of organolithium derivatives to tricyclic lactones, followed by a highly stereocontrolled acid-assisted reduction with sodium cyanoborohydride of the hemiketals formed. The stereoselectivity observed can be rationalized by the preferential approach of the hydride on the less hindered face of an oxonium ion intermediate. The cis- or trans-2, 5-disubstituted tetrahydrofurans were provided by the hot decomposition and then hydrogenation of tricycle compounds produced.

Abstract:TfOH-catalyzed direct Michael addition and cascade cyclization reactions of azadienes with unactivated ketones have been developed by controlling the amount of TfOH, which provide a divergent approach to 2,3-disubstituted benzofurans and benzofuro[3,2-b]pyridines. Due to their weak nucleophilicity, unactivated ketones are used for the first time to react with azadienes instead of preactivated carbonyl compounds, in which the catalyst acidity is a key parameter. This approach with commercial ketones in mild reaction conditions shows synthetic and environmentally benign advantages including metal-free catalyst, atom economy and simple operation.

Abstract:Metal-catalyzed cross-couplings provide powerful, concise, and accurate methods to construct carbon-carbon bonds from organohalides and organometallic reagents. Recent developments extended cross-couplings to reactions where one of the two partners connects with an aryl or alkyl carbon-hydrogen bond. From an economic and environmental point of view, oxidative couplings between two carbon-hydrogen bonds would be ideal. Oxidative coupling between phenyl and "inert" alkyl carbon-hydrogen bonds still awaits realization. It is very difficult to develop successful strategies for oxidative coupling of two carbon-hydrogen bonds owning different chemical properties. This article provides a solution to this challenge in a convenient preparation of dihydrobenzofurans from substituted phenyl alkyl ethers. For the phenyl carbon-hydrogen bond activation, our choice falls on the carboxylic acid fragment to form the palladacycle as a key intermediate. Through careful manipulation of an additional ligand, the second "inert" alkyl carbon-hydrogen bond activation takes place to facilitate the formation of structurally diversified dihydrobenzofurans.Cross-dehydrogenative coupling is finding increasing application in synthesis, but coupling two chemically distinct sites remains a challenge. Here, the authors report an oxidative coupling between sp 2 and sp 3 carbons by sequentially activating the more active aryl site followed by the alkyl position.

Abstract:The 2,3‐dihydrobenzofuran ring systems are a privileged class of oxygen heterocycles, and their synthesis continues to attract considerable effort. Herein, a visible‐light‐driven photoredox‐catalyzed radical multicomponent cyclization of 2‐vinyl phenols, N ‐alkoxypyridinium salts, and sulfur ylides is described. Key to success of the reaction involves the use of both N ‐alkoxypyridinium salts and sulfur ylides as radical precursors. This redox‐neutral protocol features good functionality tolerance, easily available starting materials, simple operation, and mild reaction conditions, enabling modular synthesis of various 2,3‐disubstituted dihydrobenzofurans. Mechanistic studies have also elucidated some of the aspects associated with the key radical intermediates.

Abstract:A method to directly convert 2-alkynylphenols to 3,4-difunctionalized benzofurans and polycyclic benzofurans was developed. This protocol involves a hypervalent-iodine-mediated oxidative dearomatization to break the aromaticity of 2-alkynylphenols, and a palladium-catalyzed domino reaction to install two functional groups at the C3 and the C4 positions and restore the aromaticity of benzofurans.

Abstract:A one-pot rhodium-catalyzed C–H functionalization/organocatalyzed oxa-Michael addition cascade reaction has been developed. This methodology enables the stereodivergent synthesis of diverse 2,3-disubstituted dihydrobenzofurans with broad functional group compatibility in good yields with high levels of stereoselectivity under exceptionally mild conditions. The full complement of stereoisomers of chiral 2,3-disubstituted dihydrobenzofurans and 3,4-disubstituted isochromans could be accessed at will by appropriate permutations of the two chiral catalysts. Abstract:Herein, a hydroxyl assisted, photoredox/cobalt co‐catalyzed semi‐hydrogenation and tandem cyclization of o‐alkynylphenols is developed towards direct assembly of 2,3‐dihydrobenzofurans. Moderate to good yields were obtained for a range of sterically and electronically diverse 2‐propynolphenols under mild conditions. Mechanistic studies demonstrated the inevitable role of the alcoholic hydroxyl group with (Z)‐alkene as the real intermediate. Finally, a key low‐valent cobalt catalyzed intramolecular hydroetherification of alkene is proposed.

The products undergo a wide range of derivatization reactions, including a regioselec-tive enol triflate formation/cross-coupling sequences and highly efficient conversion to an unusual tricyclic-8,5,5 fused lac-tam. Overall, the process represents a formal 1-atom aza-ring expansion with concomitant bridging annulation, making it of interest for the broader derivatization of alkene feedstocks.

Abstract:We report a highly efficient and selective catalytic system, ABNO (9-azabicyclo-[3.3.1]nonane N-oxyl)/HNO3, for the aerobic oxidation of substituted furans to cis-2-ene-1,4-diones under mild reaction conditions using oxygen as the oxidant. The catalyst system is amenable to various substituted (mon-, di-, and tri-) furans and tolerates diverse functional groups, including cyano, nitro, naphthyl, ketone, ester, heterocycle, and even formyl groups. Based on the control and 18O-labeling experiments, the possible mechanism of the oxidation is proposed.

Abstract:We have developed a methodology for the greatly efficient construction of significant 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran scaffolds bearing a quaternary carbon center at the C2 position by means of [4 + 1] annulation reactions between p-quinone methides and α-aryl diazoacetates as C1 synthons through organocatalysis by readily accessible TfOH catalyst under mild and transition metal-free conditions. This metal-free protocol furnishes an operationally simple and swift process for the free assembly of diverse highly functionalized 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans and also features broad substrate scope, excellent functional group compatibility, and environmental friendliness. Mechanistic investigation suggested that the reaction undergoes a rapid cascade protonation/intermolecular Michael addition/intramolecular substitution process.
