Abstract:Neolithic rice remains were recovered from a mixed rice–millet farming area in China outside the original centers of rice farming. Whether the rice remains were the result of local cultivation or obtained through trade remains unclear. Rice paddy fields are direct evidence of local cultivation. In this study, phytolith samples from the Zhangwangzhuang site were analyzed. The discriminant function distinguished 17 of 30 samples in the suspected paddy field area as rice paddy fields with an average probability of 74%; The proportion of rice bulliform phytoliths with ≥9 scales indicated that rice (Oryza sativa) was still being domesticated and, moreover, six η-type phytoliths from broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) were identified. These results suggested that the suspected paddy field at Zhangwangzhuang might be the earliest rice paddy field (ca. 6000 cal. BP) in northern China and that mixed farming was practiced here since the early Yangshao period. This study adopted discriminant analysis methods to discover ancient rice paddy fields, observed rice paddy fields outside the core rice origin area, and provided the earliest evidence regarding the development of mixed rice–millet farming in the upper Huai River region.

Abstract:South Hangzhou Bay in eastern China occupies an important position in tracing the origins and dispersal of rice and rice cultures in ancient China. Existing literature suggests that early coastal rice domestication emerged ca.8000-7400 years ago in the Kuahuqiao area, at the apex of the Bay, but no solid evidence implies a simultaneous domestication at any other places in this region. This paper presents new archaeobotanical and geological evidence of early rice domestication in the Yaojiang Valley from a well-dated sediment core retrieved near the Jingtoushan site, the earliest shell mound discovered in eastern coastal China. Phytolith combined with other microfossil evidence elucidated when and under what circumstance rice domestication became available in South Hangzhou Bay. Humans apparently started to occupy the site area 8200-7800 years ago, with rice domestication after ca.7600 cal yr BP revealed by the emergence of charcoal and bulliform phytoliths with ≥ 9 fish-scale decorations. A marine- influenced setting transformed to a desalinized wetland environment would have encouraged the early arrivals to attempt rice domestication. Rice domestication became available in the Bay 7600 years ago, but human subsistence relied on hunting and gathering until rice farming became widespread during the later Hemudu occupation (ca.7000-5000 cal yr BP) along with demographic expansion. This new evidence sheds light on the synchronous early rice domestication around South Hangzhou Bay in the early mid-Holocene. It documents the trajectory of rice farming between the Kuahuqiao and Hemudu Cultures with implications for understanding the complex rice dispersal and domestication process in coastal regions of China.

Abstract:The lower Yangtze River valley has widely been regarded as centres of rice domestication, tracing back to 10,000 cal a BP or even earlier in the late Pleistocene. Despite recent advances in both evidence of genetics and archaeology had shed light on the process of rice domestication, including its initiation, acceleration, and completion, the spatial pattern and intra-regional differences of rice domestication in the lower Yangtze River remain unclear. Here, rice bulliform phytoliths were selected as a proxy of the domestication trait and applied to Jingtoushan, Hemudu, Yushan and Xiawangdu sites, ranging from 8000 to 5000 cal a BP in the Ningshao Plain, along with accumulated phytolith data in the Jinqu Basin and Taihu Plain. Rice domestication in the lower Yangtze River exhibited a geographic mosaic pattern rather than the presumed synchronous process among different regions. Rice domestication was initiated during the Shangshan culture (10–8.5 cal ka BP) in the Jinqu Basin and increased rapidly, which reached even higher level than the subsequent Jingtoushan culture (8.3–7.8 cal ka BP) in the Ningshao Plain. During the middle Holocene, rice domestication in the Taihu Plain was generally higher than that in the contemporaneous Ningshao Plain which may finish hundreds of years later. In contrast to the accomplishment of rice domestication around 6000 cal a BP in the Taihu Plain, the delayed process of rice domestication in the Ningshao Plain may result from frequent marine inundation induced by sea-level fluctuation during the Jingtoushan and Hemudu cultures (7–5 cal ka BP).

Abstract:The southern spread of rice agriculture is of great academic interest. Although it already has a broad chronological framework, newly introduced rice use and its impact on local subsistence and ecological systems are still unclear. In this study, we explore these issues by analysing phytoliths recovered from continuous sediments of Cave No. 4 at the Nanshan site in Fujian Province, together with evidence from surrounding sites. The results show that rice was introduced into southeast China at 7,500 cal. yr BP, but the dominance of the hunting-gathering system was not challenged until later, between 5,000 and 3,500 cal. yr BP, when cultivation of rice, together with foxtail and broomcorn millets, was widely practiced in the region. This suggests that mixed farming in Southeast China, likely originating around the middle Yangtze River, became widespread and gradually systematic during the previous two-millennium adoption. This rice-millet mixed agricultural system changed the former hunting-gathering subsistence system, promoting the agriculturalization process, cultural prosperity and population growth, thus providing a solid basis for rice expansion and cultural migration to Southeast Asia.

Abstract:The transformation from hunter-gathering to farming in the south China coast has always been a conspicuous topic, as its great significance for the understanding of crop dispersal and human migration into southern China and Southeast Asia. It has been primarily assumed that rice was the only crop cultivated by early farmers in this region since 5,000 cal. BP., but the reliability of this speculation remains ambiguous, owing to the lack of systematic evidence. Based on analysis of macroscopic plant remains and phytoliths, as well as AMS radiocarbon dating at the Gancaoling site in Guangdong province, this study demonstrates the emergence of agriculture in the south China coast could be dated back to as early as 4,800–4,600 cal. BP., with the cultivation of rice and foxtail millet. This subsistence strategy change was an integral part of a more comprehensive social transformation, which started a new era of local history. Moreover, this discovery also provides further evidence supporting the universality of mixed farming in southern China and shed new light on the study of agriculture southward dispersal. The crop package of rice and millets possibly spread into the south China coast from Jiangxi via the mountain areas and then into Mainland Southeast Asia by a maritime route along the coastal regions.

Abstract:Located in the transitional region between northern and southern China, the middle Han River valley is of pivotal significance for current debates on rice domestication and the formation of mixed farming in early China. Based on phytoliths and macro-plant remains from 10 sites, along with radiocarbon dating, this study has narrowed the 2000-year gap in early rice utilization by 700 years in the middle Han River valley, and demonstrated the continuous development of rice agriculture in this region. This new evidence also reveals that as early as 7000 cal. BP, mixed farming emerged in this region and facilitated the further southward dispersal of foxtail millet and broomcorn millet into southern China and beyond. In addition, a sample-by-sample comparison of our results with phytoliths and macro-plant remains highlighted the potential biases inherent in these methods. This work emphasized the importance of multi-index archaeobotanical analysis to reconstruct ancient crop assemblages.

Abstract:The Holocene, Ahead of Print. The Dzungar Basin of northern Xinjiang has previously been considered a marginal environment with little evidence for the development of prehistoric agriculture. Recent archaeobotanical studies have indicated the region as being a route for the transmission of domesticated plants, technologies and ideas between East and West Eurasia during prehistory, as early as 5000 BP. These interactions are still poorly understood and most evidence for early plant food production and consumption in the region comes from limited mortuary contexts. In this study we present plant macrofossil analysis from the settlement site of Luanzagangzi on the southern side of the Dzungar Basin. From ca. 3130 BP an agricultural package of east and west Asian cereals and chaff is present, comprising wheat, barley, foxtail millet, broomcorn millet, and significantly a single grain of japonica type rice. AMS dating indicates this is the oldest directly dated rice in Xinjiang and the broader region, ranging 3069–2881 cal. BP. Cereal morphometrics and material culture from the site further indicate a connection with the Gansu region to the east. The spread of agriculture into the site environment may be linked to the onset of wetter conditions relating to strengthened westerly systems across arid Central Asia in the Late-Holocene. A declining abundance of West Asian cultivars over the period of the site's occupation possibly reflect a shift away from intensive agriculture to low-level management of millets.

Abstract:Rice (Oryza sativa) is one of the most important crops in the world and serves as a staple food source for more than half of the world's population.Research into when, where, and how rice was initially cultivated and eventually domesticated is essential.Research on these questions has been greatly advanced recently, along with nearly continuous research in both genetics and archaeology using newly developed analytical techniques.Here, we review the scientific understanding of rice domestication in the Yangtze River valley from both an archaeological and genetic perspective, and discuss the relationship between rice domestication and the Yangtze River civilization.Recent genetic research suggests that domesticated rice (O.sativa ssp.japonica) first occurred in southern China, including the Yangtze River valley and the Pearl River Basin.Current findings from archaeology support the view that O. sativa ssp.japonica was firstly domesticated in the Yangtze River valley ca.10,000-8,000 BP, and rice cultivation and agricultural development triggered the Yangtze River civilization.These findings enhance our understanding of rice domestication and related cultivation culture and also have implications for conservation of plant resources in the Yangtze River valley.
Mosaic Pattern of Sustained Rice Domestication and Its Environmental and Cultural Implications in Neolithic East China

Abstract:China is one of the main locations in which rice agriculture occurs, with East China now playing a significant role in research on rice domestication and culture interactions. However, the exact timing of sustained rice domestication and the process of prehistoric cultural exchange in East China remain unclear. Here, we present phytolith records of two profiles from Lingjiatan in the Chaohu Lake Basin. Our results show that rice cultivation was practiced throughout the Lingjiatan culture period (5800-5300 cal BP), and that sustained rice domestication began around 5500 cal BP, which was later than on the Taihu Plain (similar to 6200 cal BP), Ningshao Plain (similar to 5800 cal BP), and along the middle and lower Huai River (similar to 5800 cal BP). Combining other archaeological records and geomorphological features in East China, we hypothesize three possible routes for the spread of rice cultivation and cultural exchange between the lower Yangtze River and the middle and lower Huai River. Lingjiatan, situated at the intersection of two of the possible routes, experienced a gradual increase in its settled population as a result of cultural exchange and technological innovations in cultivation, thereby giving rise to its distinctive culture. This study demonstrates the significant role of Lingjiatan in facilitating transportation and fostering cultural exchange in East China during the mid-Holocene.

Abstract:The southward spread of agriculture in China has long been regarded as a hot topic worldwide, as it is closely related to the further dispersal of farming into Southeast Asia and beyond. However, the absence of Neolithic agriculture evidence in Jiangxi province, the crossroad of the southward dispersal route, makes it difficult to confirm the specific diffusion route and triggers many debates. This study for the first time provides solid evidence of Neolithic mixed farming based on rice and foxtail millet in this region, dating back to at least 4850 cal. BP and finally bridges the gap on the proposed southward dispersal route of agriculture in China. This discovery also underlines the universality of mixed agriculture and the importance of millets in the early farming practices of Southern China.

Abstract:The Zang-Yi Corridor is of pivotal significance for the interactions between northwest China, southwest China, and mainland Southeast Asia. It has been hypothesized that the formation of mixed farming in this region and its surrounding areas was based on multiple waves of crop dispersal, with foxtail millet and broomcorn millet arriving first from northwest China around 5,300 cal. BP and rice from middle Yangtze valley after 4,700 cal. BP. Based on the systematic sampling and direct dating conducted at the Guijiabao site, Sichuan Province, this study demonstrates that by no later than 5,000 cal. BP, mixed farming had already emerged in the south part of Zang-Yi corridor, which was much earlier than expected before. With this new evidence, it is argued that the transformation into farming in Southwest China was based on the dispersal of a crop package comprising foxtail millet, broomcorn millet, and rice instead of different waves of introduction. A further comparison of all archaeobotanical data in this region revealed that crop patterns varied significantly between different sites because of their diverse environmental conditions.

Abstract:We present the results of the analysis of phytoliths, grain size and organic matter content (LOI550℃), and AMS 14C dating of sedimentary profiles and individual archaeological samples from the Changshan site in Jilin Province, Northeast (NE) China. Our aim was to elucidate the origins of agriculture in the East Liao River Basin. The results indicate that there were two intervals during which prehistoric culture flourished at the Changshan site: ~ 6,500–5,600 cal years BP in the Neolithic, and ~ 3,700–2,750 cal years BP in the Bronze Age. Abundant η-type husk phytoliths from common millet and a few Ω-type husk phytoliths from foxtail millet found at the Changshan site provide direct evidence for prehistoric agriculture during these two periods. Prehistoric agriculture was practiced together with hunting and fishing, which were part of a multi-subsistence strategy. The relatively warm and wet climate during ~ 6,500–5,600 cal years BP and ~ 3,700–2,750 cal years BP promoted the prosperity of the local culture, together with cultural interchange, and the climatic conditions also encouraged the dispersal of early agriculture in the East Liao River Basin. In addition, archaeological excavations have shown that there was frequent interchange and interaction among prehistoric cultures in NE China, and we hypothesize that the Liao River Basin was the main routeway for cultural interchange and the dispersal of prehistoric agriculture in NE China.

Abstract:The archaeological sites of Shunshanji and Hanjing are recorded as the earliest Neolithic sites in the middle Huai river valley, China, which were occupied between 8,500 and 7,500 cal bp, and provide crucial evidence of rice growing. However, the water availability and management of arable land systems for rice cultivation and the main stages of rice processing at the two sites have not been studied before. In this paper, phytolith analyses are discussed in 66 samples from the Shunshanji site and 32 samples from the Hanjing site, with three phases of occupation at each. The ratios of sensitive to fixed forms in the phytolith assemblages over three phases reveal that in Phase I these ratios are relatively low, and they become significantly higher in Phases II and III at both sites. These results suggest that rice was grown probably only using natural water supplies in the lowlands during Phase I, but changed to growing on highly controlled and regularly flooded and drained wetlands in Phase II at the two sites. In addition, seen from the distribution and concentrations of phytoliths from rice, weeds and their by-products, as well as the proportions of each, both double peaked glume cells (DPG) and rice cuneiform bulliform cells (RCB) were found together with some rice paddy weed phytoliths. The concentrations of DPG were much higher than those of RCB in most samples from the Shunshanji and Hanjing sites over the three phases. The findings imply that rice ears together with the stems and leaves were probably stored after the harvest, then threshed and de-husked simultaneously, and the straw and chaff by-products were discarded together at the sites between 8,500 and 7,500 cal bp. The study in this paper aims towards a better understanding of past human behaviour and social organization in rice growing communities during the middle Neolithic in eastern China.

Abstract:Archaeological evidence indicates that millet and rice spread into southwestern China successively from the Ganqing Region and the Yangtze River Valley by approximately 5000 BP. After that, southwestern China showed a diverse pattern of mixed millet-rice cultivation. As a cultural intersection, the Liangshan region was influenced by many different areas, including the Zangyi Corridor, the Chengdu Plain, and the northern Yun-Gui Plateau. Due to poor preservation conditions, little isotopic research on the human palaeodietary pattern has been conducted in the Neolithic Liangshan area. This article presents an isotopic analysis of human skeletal remains from the Houzidong site, located in the southern part of the Liangshan region, to investigate the human subsistence strategy of the site. A total of 35 isotopic data were successfully obtained from the 89 samples of this experiment, with a wide range of delta 13C values (-17.4%o to -11.5%o; -13.6 +/- 1.4%o) and delta 15N values (+8.6%o to +12.0%o; +9.5 +/- 0.7%o). The analysis showed that the human diet at the Houzidong site included both C3 and C4 foods, and there were diverse human subsistence strategies, based on the fact that millet would have made a significant contribution to the human diet at this site (including both millet and millet-based animals). It is hypothesized that millet agriculture in the Liangshan region may have been the result of interaction between the natural environment and the local population represented by the archaeological culture.
Lijiagou and the Earliest Pottery in Henan Province, China

Abstract:It has long been believed that the earliest ceramics in the central plain of China were produced by the Neolithic cultures of Jiahu 1 and Peiligang. Excavations at Lijiagou in Henan Province, dating to the ninth millennium BC, have, however, revealed evidence for the earlier production of pottery, probably on the eve of millet and wild rice cultivation in northern and southern China respectively. It is assumed that, as in other regions such as southwest Asia and South America, sedentism preceded incipient cultivation. Here evidence is presented that sedentary communities emerged among hunter-gatherer groups who were still producing microblades. Lijiagou demonstrates that the bearers of the microblade industry were producers of pottery, preceding the earliest Neolithic cultures in central China.
Ancient Genomes Reveal Coexistence of Demic and Cultural Diffusion in the Development of Neolithic Mixed Millet and Rice Farming in Southwest China

Abstract:Southwest China is vital for understanding the dispersal and development of farming because of the coexistence of millet and rice in this region since the Neolithic. However, the process of the Neolithic transition in southwest China is largely unknown due to the lack of ancient DNA from the Neolithic period. Here we report genome-wide data from 11 human samples from Gaoshancheng and Haimenkou sites with mixed farming dating to between 4500 and 3000 years before the present in southwest China. The two ancient groups derived about 90% of their ancestry from Yellow River farmers, suggesting a demic diffusion of millet farming to southwest China. Their remaining ancestry was suggested to derive from a Hòabìnhian-related hunter-gatherer lineage. We have not detected the rice farmer-related ancestry in the two ancient groups, indicating a limited role of human migration in the Neolithic emergence of rice agriculture in southwest China. We however observed the rice farmer-related ancestry in the formation of some present-day Tibeto-Burman populations. Our results suggested the coexistence of demic and cultural diffusion in the development of Neolithic mixed farming in southwest China.
From Early Domesticated Rice of the Middle Yangtze Basin to Millet, Rice and Wheat Agriculture: Archaeobotanical Macro-Remains from Baligang, Nanyang Basin, Central China (6700–500 BC)

Abstract:Baligang is a Neolithic site on a northern tributary of the middle Yangtze and provides a long archaeobotanical sequence from the Seventh Millennium BC upto the First Millennium BC. It provides evidence for developments in rice and millet agriculture influenced by shifting cultural affiliation with the north (Yangshao and Longshan) and south (Qujialing and Shijiahe) between 4300 and 1800 BC. This paper reports on plant macro-remains (seeds), from systematic flotation of 123 samples (1700 litres), producing more than 10,000 identifiable remains. The earliest Pre-Yangshao occupation of the sites provide evidence for cultivation of rice (Oryza sativa) between 6300-6700 BC. This rice appears already domesticated in on the basis of a dominance of non-shattering spikelet bases. However, in terms of grain size changes has not yet finished, as grains are still thinner than more recent domesaticated rice and are closer in grain shape to wild rices. This early rice was cultivated alongside collection of wild staple foods, especially acorns (Quercus/Lithicarpus sensu lato). In later periods the sites has evidence for mixed farming of both rice and millets (Setaria italica and Panicum miliaceum). Soybean appears on the site in the Shijiahe period (ca.2500 BC) and wheat (Triticum cf. aestivum) in the Late Longshan levels (2200-1800 BC). Weed flora suggests an intensification of rice agriculture over time with increasing evidence of wetland weeds. We interpret these data as indicating early opportunistic cultivation of alluvial floodplains and some rainfed rice, developing into more systematic and probably irrigated cultivation starting in the Yangshao period, which intensified in the Qujialing and Shijiahe period, before a shift back to an emphasis on millets with the Late Longshan cultural influence from the north.

Abstract:Abstract Northern China harbored the world’s earliest complex societies based on millet farming, in two major centers in the Yellow (YR) and West Liao (WLR) River basins. Until now, their genetic histories have remained largely unknown. Here we present 55 ancient genomes dating to 7500-1700 BP from the YR, WLR, and Amur River (AR) regions. Contrary to the genetic stability in the AR, the YR and WLR genetic profiles substantially changed over time. The YR populations show a monotonic increase over time in their genetic affinity with present-day southern Chinese and Southeast Asians. In the WLR, intensification of farming in the Late Neolithic is correlated with increased YR affinity while the inclusion of a pastoral economy in the Bronze Age was correlated with increased AR affinity. Our results suggest a link between changes in subsistence strategy and human migration, and fuel the debate about archaeolinguistic signatures of past human migration.
