Abstract:The oil and gas generated from source rocks have largely expulsed, therefore, the recovery of the original total organic carbon content (TOC0) and cracking potential (S-2(0)) is necessary for the quantitative evaluation of oil and gas generation from source rocks. The recovery method basing on the hydrocarbon generation kinetics theory is one of the most effectual and widely used methods. However, in previous studies, the generation and cracking process of resins and asphaltenes were not considered in the recovery process. Besides, the total organic carbon content (TOC) and cracking potential (S-2) of source rocks are used directly to represent the TOC and S-2 in the residual cracking potential, without considering of the influence of residual oil, causing the overestimate of evaluation. To resolve these problems, the generation and cracking process of resins and asphaltenes are taken into consideration, and a more reasonable recovery method is built up basing on the hydrocarbon generation kinetics theory. Moreover, to eliminate the influence of the residual oil, the total organic carbon content (TOC') and cracking potential (S-2') of extracted source rock samples are used to represent the TOC and S-2 in residual cracking potential. The comparison of TOC0 and S-2(0) evaluated by the new method with that by the old method is made for the source rocks of E2S42 sub-member in Damintun sag, Liaohe depression, Bohai Bay basin, China. The results show that the original cracking potential recovery ratio by the new method is higher than that by the old method, but the total organic carbon content and cracking potential in residual cracking potential is over estimated by the old method under the influence of the residual oil in shale. As a result, under the influence of these two factors, the recovery results by new and old methods are different. Theoretically, the new method is more reasonable. The new recovery method will set a solid foundation for the quantitative evaluation of oil and gas generation from source rocks.
