Abstract:The physical properties of transition-metal oxides are closely related to defect concentrations. Herein, the modulation of oxygen vacancies and Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio on the electric and magnetic properties in Ti non-stoichiometry 0.70BiFeO3-0.30BaTi0.9O3 ceramics were investigated systematically. As the concentration of oxygen vacancies decreases, grain size increases and the perovskite unit cell with rhombohedral phase becomes more distorted. The maximum dielectric constant gradually increases and the relaxation factor decreases with decreasing oxygen vacancy concentration. The enhancement of ferroelectricity is consistent with the degree of the distortion of the perovskite lattice, and the reduction of internal bias field comes from the reduction of the defect dipoles in the ceramics. At low oxygen partial pressure, Fe2+ defects are preferred and form the double exchange interaction between Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions, which will enhance the magnetization.

Abstract:Electronic polarization or bond relaxation can effectively alter the electronic and magnetic behavior of materials by doping impurity atom. For this aim, the thermodynamic, electronic and magnetic performances of cubic BiFeO3 have been modulated by the 3d transition metal (TM) dopants (Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) based on the density functional theory. Results show that the doped specimen with low impurity concentration is more stable than that with high impurity concentration. The Mulliken charge values and spin magnetic moments of TM element are making major changes, while those of all host atoms are making any major changes. Especially, it is the linear relation between the spin magnetic moments of TM dopants and the total magnetic moment of doped specimens; thus, the variations of total magnetic moment of doped specimens are decided by the spin magnetic moments of TM dopants, thought the total magnetic moments of doped specimens mainly come from Fe atom and TM dopants. Besides, as double TM atoms substitution the Fe atoms, the Sc-, Ti-, Mn-, Co-and Zn-doped specimens show AFM state, while the V-, Cr-, Ni-and Cu-doped specimens show FM state. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Ba4Sm2FexTi4-2xNb6+xO30 (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2) ceramics were prepared by standard solid-state reaction, and the filled tungsten bronze phase with space group P4bm was confirmed for all compositions. Systematic investigation of the Fe-substitution effects on dielectric, ferroelectric as well as magnetic properties was conducted. As the value of x increased, the Curie temperature (T-c) shifted from 562 K to 411 K, which was consistent with the DSC results. The coercive field (E-c) also decreased monotonously from 90 kV/cm (x = 0) to 20 kV/cm (x = 2), suggesting that the substitution of Fe promoted the ferroelectric domain switching. Compared with Ba4Sm2Ti4Nb6O30 (x = 0), simultaneously enhanced ferroelectric and magnetic properties were realized for x = 1, 1.5 and 2. Effect of Local Structural Distortion on Magnetic and Dielectric Properties in BiFeO3 with Ba, Ti Co-Doping

Abstract:The structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of Bi1−xBaxFe1−xTixO3 (x≤0.25) ceramics are studied systematically. The symmetry of the unit cell for BiFeO3 co-doping with Ba and Ti remains the space group of R3c. The addition of Ba and Ti increases the unit cell volume without changing the unit cell symmetry. The remnant magnetization decreases monotonically with increasing the doping content, which may originate from contraction in Fe–O–Fe bond and FeO6 octahedron. Charge compensation occurs in BiFeO3 with Ba and Ti co-doping, which may suppress the charge defects and decrease the magnetism. The substitution of Fe with smaller radial Ti ion supplies larger vibration space in FeO6 octahedron, which may enhance the dielectric constant and decrease the dielectric loss significantly.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal symmetry breaking induced the coexistence of ferroelectric and magnetic order phases. To realize multiferroic orders at room temperature in BiFeO3 ceramics, structure symmetry modulation was introduced by doping Tb, where the R3c-Pbnm phase transition and unlocking ferromagnetism by destroying the cycloidal spin structure were observed. The phase structure, its fraction, and properties were investigated, including ferroelectric polarization, magnetic orders, dielectric trait, and optical absorption. The electronic structure in doped ceramics can support the parasitic ferromagnetic phase and robust ferroelectric order. The energy band is composed of the hybridization of the O-2p state and Fe-3d states, where charge transfer occurs from the O-2p valence band to the Fe-3d conduction band, driven by the localized Coulomb repulsion between d-f electrons. The present work provides insight into the regulation of the multiferroic traits of BiFeO3 from the electronic structure.

Abstract:The search for multiferroic materials with ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties at room temperature continues to be driven by the prospect of new devices. In this paper, Ba2+-Ti4+ co-doped Y1-x (Ba0.5Ti0.5) x FeO3 were prepared by a traditional solid-state reaction method. The ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism of the co-doped ceramics have been enhanced simultaneously with the maximum polarization of 0.48 μC/cm2 and the maximum magnetization of 3.25emu/g, the switched charge density (0.26 μC/cm2) measured by PUND tests indicating the intrinsic and switchable remanent polarization. The increase of Fe2+ content (increased to 28% with the increase of doping content) caused by Ba2+-Ti4+ co-doping destroys the antiferromagnetic ground state, and the doping strategy enlarges the tilt angle of oxygen octahedron from 144.93° to 148.63°. The magnetic domain switches caused by the external electric field were directly observed by magnetic force microscopy, indicating the modulation of magnetic domain by polarization at room temperature. This work may provide useful information for the structural design and performance improvement of multiferroic materials.

Abstract:The phase transition, ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity, and ferromagnetic characteristics of Bi1-x(Ba0.75Ca0.25)(x)Fe1-xTixO3 (x = 0.2-0.4) ceramics have been systematic studied. The rhombohedral R3c and tetragonal P4mm phases are determined for x = 0.2 and x = 0.4, respectively, and the composition of x = 0.3 indicates the rhombohedral and tetragonal diphase structure. The saturated P-E loop with a significantly enhanced remnant polarization (P-r similar to 43 mu C/cm(2) by dynamic hysteresis mode (DHM); P-r similar to 24 mu C/cm(2) by positive up negative down (PUND) method) is determined in Bi-0.7(Ba0.75Ca0.25)(0.3)Fe0.7Ti0.3O3 ceramics at room temperature. The coercive field is greatly suppressed with increasing x. The enhanced remnant magnetization (0.07 emu/g at 300 K) is also achieved in the optimal composition x = 0.3. The room temperature strain-electric field (s-E) curves indicates a large strain similar to 0.2% in the composition of x = 0.3. The comprehensive enhancement of ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity, and magnetization in composition of x = 0.3 suggests that introducing phase boundary is a promoting way to put BiFeO3 ceramics towards applications. Abstract:Chemical substitution is an effective method for tailoring the electrical and magnetic properties of functional materials. In this work, (1–x)Ba0.1Sr0.9TiO3 - xBiFeO3 (0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.8) ceramics were prepared by the modified Pechini method. X-ray diffraction patterns manifest that the samples undergo a gradual structural transformation from rhombohedral phase to tetragonal phase with increasing the content of Ba0.1Sr0.9TiO3 (BST). Dielectric properties show that TC can be modulated by the doping level of BST in a wide range from 885 K to 260 K accompanied by the ferroelectric transformation from non-relaxor type to relaxor type ferroelectricity. The room temperature ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism and intrinsic magnetodielectric are observed in the BiFeO3-rich samples. Magnetization and magnetodielectric measurement both show that the spin cycloid is destroyed by the substitution of BST and the critical field for the transition from spiral to antiferromagnetic collinear magnetic structure decreases with increasing the amount of BST. These findings manifest that this materials are quite promising for potential applications in BFO-based magnetoelectric devices and electrocaloric cooling technologies.

Abstract:The structural evolution of the BiFeO3-BaTiO3 system is one of the debatable topics in multiferroic solid solutions. We investigate the evolution of the crystal structure and its effect on the multiferroicity of the 0.67(SmxBi1-x)FeO3-0.33BaTiO(3) (0.05 <= x <= 0.2) ceramics. All the 0.67(SmxBi1-x)FeO3-0.33BaTiO(3) ceramics consist of cubic and tetragonal phases within the whole composition range. The structure changes from the cubic Pm3m to the tetragonal P4mm forming a biphasic region and exhibits an interconvertible behavior with the increment of Sm content. The grain size and its uniformity are mainly dominated by the symmetry of the unit cell, and the relative densities change little for all ceramics. The Sm substitution can effectively optimize the ferroelectricity and regulate the macroscopic magnetization. The optimized remnant polarization reaches similar to 6 mu C/cm(2) at x = 0.12 and a maximum remnant magnetization of similar to 0.85 emu/g is observed at x = 0.20. Besides, the varying fractions of the two phases correlate strongly to the enthalpy change which also verifies the appearance of the destroyed ferroelectric state.

Abstract:Bi1-x (Ba0.75Ca0.25)(x)Fe1-xTixO3 (0.25 <= x <= 0.35) ceramics were prepared by a standard solid state sintering technique, and the structural and multiferroic characteristics were investigated with comprehensive understanding. The symmetry of the present ceramics varied from R3c to P4mm, and the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB), coexisting of rhombohedral and tetragonal phases, was confirmed within the composition range of 0.29 <= x <= 0.31, where the enhanced multiferroic characteristics were achieved. Due to the symmetry modulation from R3c to P4mm and the breaking of spiral cycloidal spin structure of R3c phase, the weak ferromagnetic state with obvious macroscopic remnant magnetization was achieved, and consequently led to the enhanced magnetoelectric coefficient. The optimized multiferroic characteristics are obtained at x = 0.30: P-r = 38 mu C/cm(2); M-r = 0.38 emu/g, proportional to(ME) = 0.51 mV/cm Oe. The present work paves the way for further investigations and explorations of practical applications of BiFeO3-based multiferroic ceramics. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The effects of cooling rate on structure and multiferroic properties were investigated in the lead-free 0.67Sm0.12Bi0.88FeO3–0.33BaTiO3 ceramics. Cooling in different medium induces the variations of phase fractions, c/a ratio and the distortion degree of oxygen octahedron, which can effectively regulate the multiferroic properties at room temperature. The high-temperature P4mm phase transforms to the Pm3m phase with the decrement of the cooling rate. The magnetoelectric coupling effect is nonlinearly related to the cooling rate, which is induced by the corresponding distortion in FeO6 octahedron. The ceramic cooled in water shows the largest remnant polarization of ~ 20.9 μC/cm2, while the ceramic cooled in furnace shows large remnant magnetization and magnetoelectric coupling coefficient of ~ 0.50 emu/g and 7.3 mV/(cm Oe), respectively.

Abstract:Abstract Multiferroic BiFeO 3 -based ceramics were synthesized using the rapid liquid-phase sintering method. The rare-earth ion (Sm 3+ , Gd 3+ , Y 3+ ) doping causes structural distortion without changing the intrinsic rhombohedral perovskite structure. Raman analysis shows that the effect of doping on E modes is greater than A 1 modes, and the microstructure of FeO 6 octahedron can be regulated by ion doping. A-site trivalent ion doped ceramics exhibit improved magnetism compared with pure BiFeO 3 ceramic, which originated from the suppressed spiral spin structure of Fe ions. The tilt of FeO 6 octahedron as a typical structure instability causes the anomalous change of the imaginary part of permittivity at high frequency, and doped ceramics exhibit natural resonance around 16–17 GHz.

Abstract:BiFeO3 (BFO), a room-temperature antiferromagnetic-ferroelectric multiferroic, is widely researched due to its potential applications for electric-field control of the magnetism. In this work, the strain control of the phase transition and magnetic properties in the BFO/LaAlO3 heterostructures were investigated. The O K edge polarization-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) spectra show that the Fe 3d level splits into five levels, which proves that the FeO(5)( )pyramid is asymmetric in the highly strained tetragonal-like BFO. The spin canting induced by the asymmetric structure leads to the magnetic moment. Thus, an obvious magnetic signal in the 17-nm-thick BFO thin films was observed by the Quantum Design magnetic property measurement system. With the increase of the BFO film thickness, the clamping effect induced by the substrate becomes weak, further leading to the BFO phase transition. The O K edge polarization-dependent XAS spectra demonstrate that the orbital reconstruction exists at the mixed BFO phase boundaries. Since the orbital reconstructions can induce the strong magnetic coupling, the magnetic order of the different BFO phases will be coupled with each other. It causes a variation of the magnetic property at the phase boundaries or in the BFO phases.

Abstract:BiFeO3 multiferroic ceramics were modified by introducing CaTiO3. The stability of perovskite BiFeO3 was increased by the present modification, and the single‐phase (Bi1 − xCax)(Fe1 − xTix)O3 solid solutions were obtained when x ≥ 0.15, where the symmetry changed from R3c (x ≤ 0.2) to Pbnm (x ≥ 0.3). The ferroelectric property of BiFeO3 was enhanced by introducing CaTiO3 because of the reduction of leakage current and the increase of resistivity. The increased dielectric constant, decreased dielectric loss, and enhanced remnant magnetization Mr were also obtained. The best combination of multiferroic characteristics were achieved at x = 0.2.

Abstract:Multiferroic ceramics of 0.675BiFe1−x Cr x O3–0.325PbTiO3 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.025, 0.05) were prepared and comparatively investigated. The rhombohedral–tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) was formed in 0.675BiFeO3–0.325PbTiO3. The B-site Cr-substitution changes the structure from MPB to rhombohedral phase gradually, accompanied with monotonously decreased ferroelectric Curie temperature and average grain size. More interestingly, Such Cr-substitution enhances room temperature ferroelectric and magnetic properties simultaneously. The underlying mechanism is mainly attributed to the substitution enhanced local Fe3+–Cr3+ magnetic interaction and the suppressed oxygen vacancy effect. We believe these results are helpful supplements for optimizing structures and room temperature multiferroic properties of BiFeO3-based materials.

Abstract:Rare-earth ions (RE = La3+, Nd3+, and Er3+) substituted BiFeO3 (BFO) ceramics were synthesized by a conventional solid-state sintering procedure. X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectra confirm a rhombohedral R3c symmetry in all samples with significant distortion in FeO6 octahedron, as well as the occurrence of remarkable spin-phonon coupling and notable change in magnetic transition temperature induced by RE dopants. The enhanced magnetization was observed in all RE-doped BFO ceramics, unveiling that the spatial spin structure of BFO should be perturbed by RE dopants. Diffuse reflectance spectra show a conspicuous evolution of interband electronic transitions in RE-doped BFO ceramics. Especially, the two crystal-field d-d band transitions (6A1g→4T1 and 6A1g→4T2g) exhibit a linear red-shift behavior with the reduction in the cell volume, which is well-linked with a linear tendency of increased magnetization. On the basis of these investigations, a possible mechanism was proposed in this paper to demonstrate the correlation between the structural distortion, interband electronic transitions, and magnetic properties in RE-doped BFO ceramics.
The magnetoelectric coupling in rhombohedral–tetragonal phases coexisted Bi0.84Ba0.20FeO3

Abstract:Ba doped Bi1.04−xBaxFeO3 ceramics with x up to 0.30 have been prepared by the tartaric acid modified sol–gel method. The X ray diffraction patterns show that the structure transforms from rhombohedral to tetragonal with increasing the Ba substitution concentration from 10% to 30% and the coexistence of distorted rhombohedral and tetragonal phases in 20% Ba substituted BiFeO3, which was further confirmed by the Raman spectra. Bi0.84Ba0.20FeO3 exhibits the highest magnetization (1.6emu/g under magnetic field of 12kOe) compared with the other samples of different Ba substitution concentration. Significant enhancement of the ferroelectricity has been observed in 20% and 30% Ba substituted BiFeO3 with saturate polarization close to 6.6μC/cm2 for Bi0.74Ba0.30FeO3. The magnetoelectric coupling of Bi0.84Ba0.20FeO3 has been measured and the maximum decrease of magnetization under magnetic field of 9.8kOe was about 0.06emu/g with increasing applied electric field to 11kV/cm, and the magnetoelectric coefficient is 1.5×10−12s/m.

Abstract:Abstract The multiferroic properties of BiFeO3-based ceramics were improved through optimizing their sintering method and doping with certain rare earth elements in pure BiFeO3. Some methods, especially liquid-phase sintering method has largely decreased the densities of oxygen vacancies and Fe2+ in BiFeO3-based ceramics, and thus their resistivity became high enough to measure the saturated polarization and the large piezoelectric d 33 coefficient under the high electric field of >150 kV/cm. Besides, multiferroic properties were improved through the rare earth elements’ doping in pure BiFeO3. Magnetization commonly increases with the proportional increase of Nd, La, Sm and Dy contents up to ~30 %, while ferroelectric phase can transform to paraelectric phase at a certain proportion. An improved magnetoelectric coupling was often observed at ferroelectric phase with a relatively large proportion. Besides, an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient is expected in BiFeO3-based ceramics with morphotropic phase boundaries as they are already observed in thin epitaxial BiFeO3 films.
