Abstract:The discovery of phosphors with high quantum efficiency and high thermal stability is in high demand for facilitating the next generation high-power white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a high-performance blue-emitting K2Sr1.25Ba0.75(PO4)2: Eu2+ phosphor with an excellent quantum efficiency (IQE = 96.4%) and high thermal stability (93%@200 °C) via a defect engineering approach. The internal quantum efficiency was effectively enhanced through the symmetric stretching vibration of the crystal framework, preventing energy transfer loss from activator (Eu2+) to killer centers. Combining density functional theory (DFT) calculation and experimental investigation, we unravelled the intrinsic mechanism for the improvement of IQE thermal stability and proposed a model for the thermal stability enhancement. It is revealed that the induced size mismatch defects (SrBa) stimulate the excited electrons to transfer from defect levels to the conduction band of the matrix. The results arising from this study demonstrate the effectiveness of the defect engineering approach for enhancing the overall performance of LED phosphors.

Abstract:Red-emitting phosphors play an important role in the warm white light emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the development of red phosphors with high luminous efficiency and high thermal stability still faces severe challenges. A series of novel red emitting Eu3+ doped La2LiSbO6 phosphors have been synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction route. The effects of sintering temperatures as well as co-doped Gd3+ ions were discussed. X - ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and emission (PL) spectra, temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra, and CIE chromaticity coordinates were used to analyze these phosphors. The optimum sintering temperature for La2LiSbO6: Eu3+ phosphors was 1200 °C. The emission intensity reached the maximum when Eu3+ ion concentration was 18 mol%, and the dipole-dipole interaction may be responsible for the concentration quenching mechanism of Eu3+ in the La2LiSbO6:Eu3+ phosphors. Furthermore, the emission intensity could be increased by Gd3+ ions doping and the sample reached the best emission intensity when both dopant contents of Gd3+ and Eu3+ ion concentration were 10 mol%. However, due to the destabilization of the double perovskite structure caused by the doping of Gd3+ ions, the emission intensity of (La0.80Gd0.10Eu0.10)2LiSbO6 (LGLSO: Eu3+) sample was weaker than that of (La0.82Eu0.18)2LiSbO6 (LLSO: Eu3+). Impressively, LGLSO: Eu3+ phosphor exhibited good thermal stability and the luminous intensity at 423 K maintained 84% compared with its initial value at room temperature, which was higher than that of LLSO: Eu3+ (68%). The thermal quenching phenomenon and the enhancement mechanism of thermal stability were analyzed by the configuration coordinate diagram of Eu3+ ion. In addition, both chromaticity coordinates of samples located in red region, demonstrating their potential applications in white LEDs.

Abstract:In the present work, a series of zincate CaY2Sb2(ZnO4)3:Eu3+ phosphors were successfully obtained via the conventional solid-state method at high temperature. The phase purity, morphology, element mapping, photoluminescence excitation/emission (PLE/PL), and decay time of the obtained phosphors were investigated systematically. Results show that the synthesized samples demonstrate the strongest red-emitting peak at 610 nm under the n-ultraviolet (n-UV) 395 nm excitation. The Judd-Ofelt parameters (Ω2, Ω4), radiative transition rates, and branching ratios (β0J, J = 2, 4) of CaY2Sb2(ZnO4)3:Eu3+ to explore the Eu3+-coordinated environment in the host matrix. The concentration quenching of CaY2Sb2(ZnO4)3:2xEu3+ phosphors happened until at high doping concentration of x = 50 mol%. CaY2Sb2(ZnO4)3:100 mol%Eu3+ sample presented the excellent thermal stability with abnormal thermal quenching behavior. Compared with the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ red phosphor, the luminescent intensity of the prepared phosphor is 1.14 times stronger. The high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of CaY2Sb2(ZnO4)3:100 mol%Eu3+ phosphor is 79.20%. In addition, the fabricated red and white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs) both emit bright light. The w-LED demonstrates a high color rendering index (Ra = 96) and a low correlated color temperature (CCT = 5249 K). Therefore, the prepared red-emitting phosphor has a promising application in w-LEDs.

Abstract:Red phosphors with good thermal stability, high color temperature and color purity are critical in high power warm white LED devices. Herein, a series of single and co-doped Tb3+,Eu3+ polychromatic phosphors with pyrochlore structure based on Gd2Zr2O7 have been prepared for the first time by a conventional solid phase reaction method. Compared to single doped Eu3+ phosphors, Tb3+,Eu3+ co-doped phosphors possess following advantages: improved UV absorption, increased photoluminescence intensity, extended luminescence range and improved thermal stability. At room temperature, the Gd2Zr2O7:Tb3+,Eu3+ phosphors exhibited a gradual shift from yellow-green emission at 544nm to orange-red emission at 613nm with increasing doping of Eu3+ ions. Energy transfer efficiency has been evaluated to be 71% by analyzing the fluorescence lifetime of Tb3+ ions. The concentration quenching mechanism under different conditions was analyzed in detail and it was concluded that the quenching of Tb3+ is caused by dipole-dipole interaction. In addition, the activation energy (ΔEa) of the Gd1.92Zr2O7:0.03Tb3+,0.05Eu3+ phosphor was calculated to be as high as 0.2674eV compared to other Tb3+, Eu3+ co-doped phosphors, demonstrating its high thermal stability. WLEDs devices based on Gd1.92Zr2O7:0.03Tb3+,0.05Eu3+ phosphors have been prepared, which have low correlated color temperature (CCT) (5283K), high color rendering index (Ra = 85.5K) and CIE coordinates chromaticity coordinate (0.3371,0.3333). All of the results show that Gd2Zr2O7:Tb3+,Eu3+ phosphors provide a new avenue to develop high quality red emission and high thermal stability phosphors for WLEDs.

Abstract:White light-emitting diode (WLED), acting as a new generation of solid-state lighting, plays a critical role in energy conservation. Red-emitting phosphors with high efficiency could effectively improve the quality of WLED devices. In this report, Eu3+-doped Ca2ScTaO6 luminescence materials have been successfully synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state method. Its crystal structure was confirmed to be a monoclinic lead-free double-perovskite material system with space group P21/n by the X-ray diffraction patterns. The strongest emission peak was about 614 nm distributed to the 5D0→7F2 electric-dipole transition. Additionally, the optimal doping concentration was found to be 40 mol%, and the concentration quenching mechanism is assigned to d-d interaction. The Ca2ScTaO6: Eu3+ phosphors exhibited an ultrahigh internal quantum yield (about 100%) with good thermal stability (81.5% at 423 K compared with the emission intensity at 303 K). Furthermore, the WLED with suitable correlated color temperature (4201 K) and color rendering index (87.62) was fabricated. The phosphor-based polydimethylsioxane light-emitting flexible film exhibited good luminescence, which is suitable to be utilized in flexible display. The obtained results suggest that the high-efficiency red-emitting Ca2ScTaO6: Eu3+ phosphors as a commercial candidate are promising for use in near-ultraviolet-excited WLEDs.

Abstract:Nowadays, red phosphor plays a key role in improving the lighting quality and color rendering index of phosphor‐converted white light emitting diodes (w‐LEDs). However, the development of thermally stable and highly efficient red phosphor is still a pivotal challenge. Herein, a new strategy to design antithermal‐quenching red emission in Eu3+, Mn4+‐codoped phosphors is proposed. The photoluminescence intensity of Mg3Y2(1−y)Ge3O12:yEu3+, Mn4+ (0 ≤ y ≤ 1) phosphors continuously enhances with rising temperature from 298 to 523 K based on Eu3+ → Mn4+ energy transfer. For Mg3Eu2Ge3O12:Mn4+ sample, the integrated intensity at 523 K remarkably reaches 120% of that at 298 K. Interestingly, through codoping Eu3+ and Mn4+ in Mg3Y2Ge3O12, the photoluminescence color is controllably tuned from orangish‐red (610 nm) to deep‐red (660 nm) light by changing Eu3+ concentration. The fabricated w‐LEDs exhibit superior warm white light with low corrected color temperature (CCT = 4848 K) and high color rendering index (Ra = 96.2), indicating the promising red component for w‐LED applications. Based on the abnormal increase in antistokes peaks of Mn4+ with temperatures, Mg3Eu2Ge3O12:Mn4+ phosphor also presents a potential application in optical thermometry sensors. This work initiates a new insight to construct thermally stable and spectra‐tunable red phosphors for various optical applications.

Abstract:Highly efficient green/yellowish‐orange phosphors with low thermal quenching behavior are urgently required to improve the luminescence efficiency, color stability, and color rendering of phosphor‐converted white light emitting diodes (w‐LEDs). Herein, a novel green Cs2BaP2O7:0.01Eu2+ phosphor with high luminescence efficiency (82.7%) and thermal quenching behavior (92.5% at 423 K) is reported. Besides, a further luminescence improvement in the quantum yield (98.9%) and thermal quenching resistance (120% at 448 K) is successfully achieved in green/yellowish‐orange color‐tunable Cs2MP2O7:0.01Eu2+ (M = Ba, Sr, and Ca) phosphors. Surprisingly, these green/yellowish‐orange Cs2MP2O7:0.01Eu2+ (M = Ba, Sr, and Ca) phosphors even have a prior advantage over the commercial green β‐SiAlON:Eu2+ and yellow YAG:Ce3+ phosphors. The corresponding spectral adjustment and thermal stability mechanisms are revealed, related to the optimization of local lattice symmetry. The prototype w‐LEDs exhibit warm white light with CIE color coordinate at (0.337, 0.322). The color rendering index, corrected color temperature, and luminescence efficiency can reach 92.6, 4044 K, and 152.56 lm W−1, respectively. In general, the as‐reported green/yellowish‐orange Eu2+‐doped pyrophosphate phosphors are promising candidates in the future high‐quality w‐LEDs applications. The proposal of local lattice symmetry modulation can provide a new approach to exploit novel phosphors with excellent thermal quenching resistance.
Energy transfer and thermal stability enhancement in Ce/Cr co-doped Al 2 O 3 /YAG eutectic phosphor ceramics for broadband red-emission

Abstract:The Ce/Cr co-doped Al 2 O 3 /YAG eutectic phosphor ceramics for WLEDs with functional and structural integration were successfully solidified by laser floating zone melting (LFZM) method (>10 4 K/cm). The influences of Cr 3+ doping on microstructure, mechanical properties and optical characteristics of the eutectic phosphor ceramics were systematically and efficiently investigated. The results showed that the eutectic phosphor ceramics presented typical "Chinese script" (CS) irregular eutectic structure, consisting of interpenetrated Al 2 O 3 :Cr 3+ and YAG:Ce 3+ /Cr 3+ phases. Under the excitation of the blue light (460 nm), the eutectic phosphor ceramics exhibited excellent red-light emission with wavelengths of about 687 nm, 693 nm and 707 nm. The emission intensity could be still maintained at a high level of 68% at 127 °C compared to the intensity at room temperature, referring to good thermal stability of the eutectic phosphor ceramics. Especially, the color rendering index (Ra = 80) and the correlative color temperature (Tc = 5606 K) of the present eutectic phosphor were simultaneously improved by the energy transfer between Ce 3+ and Cr 3+ ions. The present Ce/Cr co-doped Al 2 O 3 /YAG eutectic phosphor ceramics can be used as excellent candidates for high performance warm WLEDs.

Abstract:Red-emitting phosphor is the main component material of white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), enhancing its thermostability is a key challenge to improve the lighting quality. In this work, a strategy of constructing multi-level electron traps to compensate for fluorescence thermal quenching is proposed, and the Eu 3+ -doped phosphor host was modified by polycrystalline crystals. Owing to the asymmetry of coordination cation configuration in the host, atomic dislocations occur in the local spatial region resulting in an increase in cationic disorder, thus forming multi-level electron traps. The multi-level electron traps release electrons at different temperatures to compensate for the thermal quenching of Eu 3+ luminescence, which results in a reciprocating change in the Eu 3+ PL intensity. At 523 K, the relative emission intensity of Eu 3+ dominant peak reaches 0.75 (λ ex = 394 nm peak:610–619 nm), and the maximum relative emission intensity reaches 0.99 (λ ex = 465 nm peak:700–714 nm), which indicates that the phosphor has excellent thermostability. These results manifest that the multi-level electron traps formed by modifying the activator host with polycrystalline crystals can greatly improve the thermostability of phosphors, which provides a new route for preparing phosphors with excellent thermostability.

A novel efficient red-emitting K7SrY2B15O30: Eu3+ phosphor with non-concentration quenching and robust thermal stability for white LEDs

Abstract:Inhibiting energy migration between Eu3+ ions in a fixed host to get higher doping concentration is a permanent topic. Herein, a novel non-concentration quenching red-emitting K7SrY2-2xB15O30: xEu3+ (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) phosphor was synthesized via high-temperature sintering method. XRD measurement, Rietveld refinement results, and radius percentage deviation calculation demonstrated the phase purity and the occupation preference of Eu3+ ions. With continuously increasing doping Eu3+ ions, the absence of concentration quenching could be explained by long distance between two Eu3+ (7.012 Å) and the K7SrEu2B15O30 could exhibit striking photoluminescence performance with the highest emission wavelength centered at 617 nm. Meanwhile, under the radiation of 393 nm, the high internal quantum efficiency ( ∼ 78.71 %), excellent color purity ( ∼ 88.32 %) and robust thermal stability whose emission intensity at 140 °C could still reach ∼ 97.31 % could guarantee its potential application. When coating BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+, (Ba, Sr)2SiO4: Eu2+, and K7SrEu2B15O30 on a near-ultraviolet chip, the bright white light with a low correlated color temperature of 4211 K and CIE color coordinates of (0.3675, 0.3556) could be obtained. Taking the analytic results above, the non-concentration quenching K7SrY2B15O30: Eu3+ compound has great potential to act as a candidate for red-emitting phosphors in solid-state lighting field.
Enhanced red emission of Eu3+-activated phosphors via the special design in A-sites of double perovskite structure

Abstract:The luminous properties of Eu3+-activated red phosphors are strongly influenced by the crystal structure. Although Eu3+-activated phosphors with various structures have been developed, their luminous performance still needs to be improved to meet the requirements of practical applications. In this work, a new structure design concept is proposed by exploring a novel Li3La3W2O12:Eu3+red phosphor. The PL intensity of the Li3La3W2O12:Eu3+ phosphor is much higher than La2LiSbO6:Eu3+ phosphor with similar structure. The crystal structure of Li3La3W2O12:Eu3+is confirmed by Rietveld refinements, 6Li solid-state magic angle spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (6Li MAS NMR) study and Raman analysis. The results show that the Li3La3W2O12:Eu3+ phosphor exhibits high quantum efficiency (76.6%) under 395 nm excitation and high thermal stability. Finally, a high-performance white light LED device is packaged by using Li3La3W2O12:Eu3+. This work not only provides a high-performance alternative red phosphor for LEDs, but also demonstrates a new structural design strategy for preparing other advanced phosphors.

Abstract:Solid-state phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) are the leading trend of the lighting industry in the 21st century. To pursue high quality WLED lighting, the development of highly efficient phosphors with tunable luminescence has become a hot research topic. Herein, we reported for the first time on Bi3+/Eu3+-doped Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)8 phosphors that exhibited tunable emission and high energy transfer efficiency of 89.90% from Bi3+ to Eu3+. The phase purity, microstructure, electronic structure and photoluminescence properties of these phosphors were studied in detail. Bi3+ and Eu3+ were effectively doped in Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)8 with an optical bandgap of 3.81 eV. The band structure and density of states were quantitatively evaluated by density functional theory simulation. At an excitation wavelength of 342 nm, the Bi3+-doped phosphor achieved yellow-green emission. By alloying Eu3+ into Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)8:Bi3+, the luminescence gradually turned red due to the energy transfer from Bi3+ to Eu3+. Moreover, the activation energy of the prepared phosphor was 0.1897 eV, demonstrating excellent thermal stability. Eventually, by combining Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)8:4%Bi3+,4%Eu3+ and a blue-emitting BAM:Eu2+ phosphor with a 365 nm ultraviolet chip, a WLED device with a high colour rendering index (Ra) of 78.7, chromaticity coordinates of (0.3401, 0.3131) and correlated colour temperature of 5080 K was successfully achieved. This work provided new insights into the design and development of color-tunable phosphors for white LEDs.

Abstract:The high-temperature solid-phase method synthesized a series of red phosphors Ca2InTaO6: xEu3+. Their most substantial emission peak is at 612 nm, FWHM = 8 nm, and they can be excited under blue light. Has very excellent thermal stability, still has 77.7% of normal emission intensity at 150 °C, and the luminous intensity decreases very slowly between 80 °C–150 °C. In the high temperature durability test at 120 °C and 150 °C, the sample can still maintain good luminous intensity for a long time. The WLED was fabricated using fabricated samples in combination with commercial green and blue phosphors; it has Ra = 90.1 and R9 = 83.4. All expected test results prove that this sample is suitable for modern LED lighting.

Structural determination, energy transfer and color-tunable photoluminescence of stable LiYSiO 4 : Ce/Tb/Sm Phosphors toward n UV pumped w LEDs application

Abstract:Study on photon emission of Ce 3+ -doped phosphors is essential for advanced optoelectronic application. However, it remains quite difficult to design near-ultraviolet excitable Ce 3+ -activated silicate blue/cyan-emitting phosphors because of the combined influence of iconicity of Ce 3+ , crystal field strength, and nephelauxetic effect. Herein, Ce 3+ incorporated into a proper host LiYSiO 4 (LYS) phosphor is mechanistically investigated and shown efficient blue/cyan photoluminescence (PL) owing to Ce 3+ 5d 1 electronic state experiencing appropriate crystal field splitting. The comprehensive analysis based on structural refinement, dynamic/static spectra, and density functional theory calculations indicates that Ce 3+ ions are energetically favored in octahedral Y site as compared with Li site in the host, resulting in attractive PL properties. According to the principle of color superposition and via cascading energy transfer (ET) from Ce 3+ → Tb 3+ → Sm 3+ , systematic PL tuning in a large color gamut is realized by further codoping with the green- and red-emissions of Tb 3+ and Sm 3+ in the phosphor LYS: Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ . The direct ET from Ce 3+ → Sm 3+ is difficult to occur due to the metal-metal charge transfer effect. Of note, the PL thermal-quenching of Ce 3+ is mainly associated with multiphonon relaxation, while the quenching of Tb 3+ / Sm 3+ is primarily due to the cross relaxation (CR) process via dipole-dipole (d-d) interaction. The appropriate distance between the two nearest adjacent Y sites in the host together with the ET are conducive to weaken the CR process of Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ , leading to high PL efficiency. Finally, a prototype pc- w LED assembled via a remote 'capping' packaging strategy and by using only the stably composition-optimized white-emitting LYS: Ce 3+ /Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ demonstrates that the phosphor is promising for high-quality of light.

Abstract:The white light-emitting diodes, contributing as a light initiator for the succeeding generation, is now becoming a consistently developing and attractive research area. However, the weak thermal stability, high correlated color temperature (CCT), and low color rendering (Ra) restrict its effectiveness for large-scale implementation. In this work, we reported for the first time the incorporation of rare-earth ions Ce3+-Tb3+-Sm3+ into Ca3YAl3B4O15 (CYAB) in the fabrication of WLEDs, which showed tunable photoluminescence properties to accomplish exceptional thermal stability, single-phase white light emission, and efficient energy transfer among Ce3+, Tb3+, Sm3+ ions, respectively. The crystal structure and the rare earth ion dopants in the cation borate CYAB phosphors were quantitatively evaluated, that highlighting the preferences at 9-fold-coordinated Y sites. The sensitization effects were studied by evaluating the photoluminescence, lifetime curves, and quantum efficiencies, respectively. Besides this, the CY0.45AB:0.50Tb3+,0.05Sm3+ and CY0.65AB:0.03Ce3+,0.20Tb3+,0.12Sm3+ phosphors possess significant resistance towards thermal quenching phenomena. The white LED either containing CY0.45AB:0.50Tb3+,0.05Sm3+ phosphor blended with the commercial blue phosphor or the single-phase WLED only containing CY0.65AB:0.03Ce3+,0.20Tb3+,0.12Sm3+ phosphor exhibited warm white emissions either with low CCT ≈ 4543 K or 3913 K and high Ra with 86.0 or 84.4, respectively. These results are superior to the commercial WLED containing Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor and blue LED chip (CCT ≈ 7746 K, Ra ≈ 75), that furnish either as a good candidate for the fabrication of warm WLED.

Abstract:Ce3+ ion can effectively sensitize Sm3+ ion via energy transfer, and this phenomenon can led to the development of white light-emitting diodes (WLED). However, interestingly, high correlated color temperature (CCT), poor color-rending index (CRI), poor thermal stability, and low efficacy of available red phosphor still pose immense challenges. Herein, we undertook a combined analysis: X-ray diffraction (XRD), crystal refinement, electron spin resonance (ESR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS). We also observed the optical properties of the resulting samples. The Ce3+ and Sm3+ dopants on the Sr2+ and La3+ sites in the mixed cation borate Sr3LaAl3B4O15 (SLAB) phosphors were quantitatively evaluated. A cerium ion merged as a sensitizer, improving the red emission intensity by enhancing it 3.9 times. The energy transfer (ET) between Ce3+ and Sm3+ was examined experimentally and with theoretical models as a function of Ce3+ concentrations at ambient temperatures. Several theoretical models were employed to simulate the luminescence decays of Ce3+ and Sm3+ doped samples at different doping levels and their transfer mechanisms were studied depending on forced electric dipole at each ion. Notably, the electronic sites created by the oxygen vacancies around the Ln3+ ions can effectively justify the highly efficient bluish-red phosphor. Additionally, the SL0.95AB:0.02Ce3+,0.03Sm3+ exhibited outstanding thermal-quenching (TQ) resistance and has > 94.8% intensity at 425 K. WLEDs made with the use of SL0.95AB:0.02Ce3+,0.03Sm3+ furnished an exceptional CRI exceeding 88 and low at CCT 4503 K. These results are superior to the parameters of commercial WLED containing Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor and blue LED chip (CCT≈7746 K, CRI≈75), and they could be a cornerstone for the fabrication of warm WLEDs.

Abstract:Abstract Red phosphor materials play a key role in improving the lighting and backlit display quality of phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs). However, the development of a red phosphor with simultaneous high efficiency, excellent thermal stability and high colour purity is still a challenge. In this work, unique non-concentration quenching in solid-solution Cs 3 Gd 1 − x Ge 3 O 9 : x Eu 3+ (CGGO: x Eu 3+ ) ( x = 0.1–1.0) phosphors is successfully developed to achieve a highly efficient red-emitting Cs 3 EuGe 3 O 9 (CEGO) phosphor. Under the optimal 464 nm blue light excitation, CEGO shows a strong red emission at 611 nm with a high colour purity of 95.07% and a high internal quantum efficiency of 94%. Impressively, this red-emitting CEGO phosphor exhibits a better thermal stability at higher temperatures (175–250 °C, >90%) than typical red K 2 SiF 6 :Mn 4+ and Y 2 O 3 :Eu 3+ phosphors, and has a remarkable volumetric negative thermal expansion (coefficient of thermal expansion, α = −5.06 × 10 −5 /°C, 25–250 °C). By employing this red CEGO phosphor, a fabricated pc-WLED emits warm white light with colour coordinates (0.364, 0.383), a high colour rendering index (CRI = 89.7), and a low colour coordinate temperature (CCT = 4508 K). These results indicate that this highly efficient red-emitting phosphor has great potential as a red component for pc-WLEDs, opening a new perspective for developing new phosphor materials.
Efficient and stable Sr3Eu2B4O12 red phosphor benefiting from low symmetry and distorted local environment

Abstract:The development of suitable red phosphors to obtain improved white color stands a good chance to serve in the new generation of white light-emitting diodes. Owing to multi-elements via doping and oxidation of reduced valence state of lanthanide or transition metal ions, most of the reported phosphors usually suffer from complex synthetic processes and unstable color of the lighting industry cycle. In this work, we present a new red emitting and stable Sr3Eu2B4O12 phosphor with regard to its special structure. It crystallizes as an orthorhombic cell, with Sr and Eu atoms co-occupying three different lattice sites in the space group of Pnma (no. 62). It is proposed that the long bond distance between activators minimizes the content quenching, while the high disorder of location restricts the thermal quenching. This phosphor emits bright red light with good color purity under UV excitation, with the luminescence intensity and quantum yield tunable via the fabrication temperature. Through a preliminary optimization of the synthesis process, the Sr3Eu2B4O12 phosphor prepared at 1250 °C has high quantum yields of about 94.7% and excellent thermal stability of 85.6% intensity retention at 150 °C relative to the initial value at room temperature. The calculated Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters (Ω2, Ω4) further clarified that the Eu3+ site in Sr3Eu2B4O12 had lower symmetry without an inversion center, and more distorted local environment and structural rigidity of the host, predicting excellent thermal stability. Finally, a warm pc-WLED device has been produced by mixing as-prepared Sr3Eu2B4O12 powders and commercial BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ and (Sr, Ba)2SiO4:Eu2+ phosphors, which exhibits a high color rendering index (Ra = 83.4) along with a color temperature at around 4102 K. The present work indicates that the Sr3Eu2B4O12 phosphor is an efficient red component with excellent thermal stability for white-light production of near-UV-excited w-LEDs.
