Abstract:Herein, we report an anthracene-based material, 2-(anthracen-9-yl)thianthrene (), whose crystal exhibits excimer fluorescence with an unexpected high luminous efficiency (up to 80%) and long lifetime (163.75 ns), due to pairwise anthracene stacking. Abstract:Organic light-emitting materials are centered on their excited states. However, excited-state geometry is hardly solved. Herein, the planar distance of an anthracene excimer is determined by integrating a monodisperse dimeric anthracene stacking in crystal and high-pressure technique. The crystal exhibits the pure excimer fluorescence at ambient conditions, and a unique photophysical phenomenon is observed under pressure: fluorescence peak keeps constant first and then starts a gradual redshift. The theoretical potential energy curve indicates that this starting point of redshift corresponds to the excimer equilibrium geometry, which will be innovative to determine the excited-state pi-pi interplanar distance (R-e) in experiment. Moreover, high-pressure synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction experiment tactfully determines R-e = 3.330 angstrom at the pressure point of initial redshift. This work not only suggests the R-e determination by an original pathway but also reports a unique excimer photophysics, which may provide a reference benchmark for the further theoretical and experimental studies on aromatic excimer.

Abstract:Herein, density functional theory (DFT) computations were performed to investigate the discrete dimer of a mono-substituted anthracene derivative (2-TA-AN), which exhibited highly efficient pure excimer fluorescence in its crystal form. As a more practical model, its geometry, potential energy curve and excited state property were systematically calculated to better understand the excimer formation process and photophysical properties. The compressed excimer geometry is responsible for the highly efficient excimer emission, arising from the enhanced rigidity that greatly suppresses its non-radiative vibrations. Potential energy curves along three directions reveal the non-uniqueness of excimer formation along the long axis of anthracene, which is in a good agreement with the experimental findings. Upon decreasing the displacement, the intermonomer charge-transfer (CT) component gradually increased towards an approximately equivalent hybridization with the locally-emissive (LE) state of the monomer during the formation of the excimer. The excimer emission wavelength versus intermonomer CT content shows a similar trend along the three directions, revealing a turning point related to the essential transition of the excited state properties from the LE of the monomer to the HLCT of the excimer. The present results will contribute to the better understanding of the structure-property relationships in excimer formation and photophysical properties.

To clarify a clear structure-property relationship between the aggregate structure and the luminescent property, the intermolecular dimer, which represents the smallest aggregate in a number, is selected as an ideal research model. However, how to achieve an intermolecular dimer by a rational molecular design is rarely found in previous papers in this field. Here, we design and synthesize three pyrene derivatives, aiming at achieving the pyrene-based dimer in a solid state, by bridging pyrene and benzo[d]thiazole (BZT) in a different position on a phenylene. The pyrene and BZT groups are connected with each other in the ortho-, meta-, and para-positions of the phenylene to construct three molecules Py-oBZT, Py-mBZT, and Py-pBZT. Experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that only Py-oBZT shows pyrene-based dimer stacking with a discrete feature due to the large steric hindrance provided by the BZT group. Compared to individual pyrenes in the crystal, the pyrene-based dimer in the Py-oBZT crystal exhibits a different molecular orientation, which is verified by the presence of multiple potential wells of the pyrene dimer using a theoretical simulation of the potential energy surface. This work not only examines the effect of steric hindrance on the formation of the pyrene dimer packing, but also provides an understanding of the multiplicity of the pyrene dimer structures. The presence of an ortho-linked substituent in pyrene can lead to steric hindrance on one side of the pyrene plane, which prevents the formation of undesired interactions and promotes the selective formation of dimers in a desired orientation.

Abstract:Non-covalent interactions between aromatic moieties, especially π–π interactions, play a key role in organic luminescent materials. Pyrene often serves as a common luminogen, forming discrete dimers for fundamental research. In this work, pyrene-based materials with different π–π stackings in the crystal state were chosen and combined with high-pressure technique to explore the relationship between π–π stacking and corresponding photophysical properties. Xanthene was introduced as the template frame to quantitatively control the distance between two pyrene units of 2,7-di- tert -butyl-9,9-dimethyl-4,5-di(pyren-1-yl)-9 H -xanthene (X2P). Next, alkynylene substituents were introduced for improving molecular flexibility (2,7-di- tert -butyl-9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(pyren-1-ylethynyl)-9 H -xanthene, X2EP). High pressure technique was utilized for regulating π–π interactions gradually and continuously. As a result, these four crystals, including pyrene, X2P, X2EP-B and X2EP-N, showed red shifts of emission with different degrees in response to the decreased π–π distance and enhanced π–π interactions under high pressure, in which X2EP exhibited remarkable tri-color changes from blue to red with higher contrast and enhanced sensitivity than X2P. Therefore, this work not only reveals that the photophysical properties of pyrene-based materials are highly related to the variation of the π–π distance, but also provides a strategy for the fabrication of piezochromic materials (PCMs) with excellent performance by combining molecular rigidity and flexibility, which can be extended to other fluorophores besides pyrene.

Abstract:Two pyrene-imidazole-based structural isomers, axisymmetric syn-PyDTI and centrosymmetric anti-PyDTI, have been easily produced and successfully separated in a one-pot reaction. Crystalline syn-PyDTI exhibited a 2-fold higher quantum efficiency than anti-PyDTI and displayed a much better performance in OLEDs with a eta(c.max) of 11.4 cd A(-1) (8.8 cd A(-1) for anti-PyDTI), although they possess the same apparent electronic structure. Observations revealed that the molecular excited-state properties are derived from distinct structural symmetries.

Abstract:Four pyrene-functionalized polyacetylenes were designed and prepared through a typical post-polymerization modification route, which is the highly efficient reaction between activated ester and primary anime groups. The chemical structures of the resultant polymers were characterized with multiple spectroscopic techniques and the data indicated the successful functionalization of the polyacetylenes. The introduction of the pyrene moieties into the polymer structure allowed us to investigate the interactions between the polymer backbone and side chains. For the mono-substituted polyacetylenes, both the monomer and excimer emission features of the pyrene groups could be recorded, while for the di-substituted polyacetylenes, the fluorescence from the pyrene excimer vanished and the fluorescence intensity from the pyrene monomer decreased, the fluorescence from the polymer chain predominated the emission features. The concomitant energy transfer from the pyrene monomer and excimer to poly(diphenylacetylene) backbone was associated with the underlying mechanism. In addition to the substitution modes, the linkage between the poly(diphenylacetylene) backbone and the pyrene moiety also played a significant role in the determination of the emission species. A long alkyl spacer was beneficial to the pyrene monomer emission while a short one may be helpful to the formation of the excimer and intramolecular energy transfer.
Conformational Dynamics of the Pyrene Excimer

Abstract:The conformational dynamics of the pyrene excimer play a critical role in its unique fluorescence properties. Yet, the influence of multiple local minima on its excited-state behavior remains underexplored. Using a combination of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and unsupervised machine learning analysis, we have identified and characterized a diverse set of stable excimer geometries in the first excited state. Our analysis reveals that rapid structural reorganization towards the most stable stacked-twisted conformer dominates the excimer’s photophysics, outcompeting radiative relaxation. This conformer, which is primarily responsible for the characteristic red-shifted, structureless fluorescence emission, reconciles experimental observations of long fluorescence lifetimes and emission profiles. These findings provide new insights into the excited-state dynamics of excimers. They may inform the design of excimer-based materials in fields ranging from organic electronics to molecular sensing.

Abstract:The behavior of pyrrole under high pressure has been investigated by in situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering up to 34 GPa. A solid-to-solid transition at about 6.2 GPa with a large collapse of volume (similar to 40%) from Pnma to P2(1)/c has been found after a liquid-to-solid transition at 0.6 GPa, which is caused by the molecular rotational repacking of pi-stacking. This new phase P2(1)/c plays a central role in the following pressure-induced polymerization due to the formation of a closed dimer, a very important precursor. The threshold of C center dot center dot center dot C distance with steric hindrance in dimer is about 1.62 angstrom at similar to 10.2 GPa. After this steric hindrance is overcome, a crystal-amorphous transformation starts at similar to 14.3 GPa. When completely released from 34 GPa, the recovered solid product with single bond is identified by in situ Raman measurement.

Abstract:We examine the interdependence of structural and electronic properties of two substituted pyrene crystals by means of combined spectroscopic probes and density-functional theory calculations. One derivative features n-hexyl side groups, while the other one contains branched silanyl groups. Both derivatives form triclinic crystal structures when grown from solution, but the electronic dispersion behavior is significantly different due to differences in $\pi$-$\pi$ overlap along the $a$ crystal axis. Both systems display dispersion of 0.40-0.45 eV in the valence band, suggesting a high intrinsic hole mobility. However, the dispersion is primarily along the a-axis in the silanyl-substituted derivative, but less aligned with this crystal axis in the hexyl-substituted material. This is a direct consequence of the diferences in co-facial $\pi$ electron overlap revealed by the crystallographic studies. We find that photophysical defects, ascribed to excimer-like states, point to the importance of localized trap states. Substituted pyrenes are useful model systems to unravel the interplay of crystal structure and electronic properties in organic semiconductors.

Abstract:Polyaromatic compounds are significant members of leading candidates for organic semiconductors and optical materials. However, a thorny problem of polyaromatic materials is that their good emissive abilities in solutions are seriously weakened in solids due to strong rr rc interactions between aromatics. Abstract:The excited-state properties of the "free" and "locked" pyrazine derivatives are investigated in solution. DCFP with "free" phenyls is theoretically calculated to be non-emissive due to the non-radiative energy dissipation through strong Duschinsky rotation effect, in agreement with the available experimental result. Surprisingly, DCBP with "bi-locked" phenyls is also calculated to be nonluminous. The emission of DCAP with "conjoined" architecture is predicted to be weaker than DCPP with "single-locked" phenyls, quite contrary to our intuition but further validated by the experimental measurement. The construction of four-, five- and six-membered ring respectively in DCBP, DCAP and DCPP is found to be the major structural origin for the descending relaxation energy in these "locked" systems, thus giving rise to the ascending luminescence order. Our work not only provides strategy for the molecular design of efficient organic light-emitting materials, but also offers valuable insight into the aggregation-induced emission phenomena.

Abstract:A simple anthryl derivative 1-((anthracen-10-yl)methylene)-4-ethyl-thiosemicarbazide (ANS) shows a methanol-tunable solid state fluorescence enhancement based on different molecular packing structure; the emission is stronger in crystal 2 than that in crystal 1 under the same condition. This is mainly due to the formation of face-to-face pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking assembly in crystal 2 which is directed and enhanced by intermolecular H-bonding interactions. The observation of fluorescence decay corroborates the formation of an emissive excimer in the pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking assembly.

Abstract:Due to their unique photophysical and electronic properties, pyrene and its analogues have been the subject of extensive research in recent decades. The propensity of pyrene and its derivatives to form excimers has found wide application in various fields. Nitrogen-substituted pyrene derivatives display similar photophysical properties, but for them, excimer emission has not been reported to date. Here, we use time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations to investigate the low-lying exciton states of dimers of pyrene and 2-azapyrene. The excimer equilibrium structures are determined and the contribution of charge transfer (CT) excitations and intermolecular interactions to the exciton states is disclosed using a diabatization procedure. The study reveals that the dimers formed by the two molecules have quite similar exciton-state patterns, in which the relevant CT contributions govern the formation of excimer states, along with the La/Lb state inversion. In contrast with pyrene, the dipole–dipole interactions in 2-azapyrene stabilize the dark eclipsed excimer structure and increase the barrier for conversion into a bright twisted excimer. It is suggested that these differences in the nitrogen-substituted derivative might influence the excimer emission properties.
