Abstract:Metal-doping is an effective method to adjust the physical and chemical properties of semiconductor metal oxides. This work adopts a simple solvothermal method to synthesize Mo-doped tungsten oxide nanoparticles. The high-performance electrochromic films can be homogenously formed on ITO glass without post-annealing. Compared with pure WO3 films, the optimized Mo-doped WO3 films show improved electrochromic properties with significant optical contrast (68.3% at 633 nm), the short response time (6.3 s and 3.9 s for coloring and bleaching, respectively), and excellent coloration efficiency (107.2 cm2 C−1). The improved electrochromic behavior is mainly due to the increasing diffusion rate of Li+ in Mo-doped WO3 films (increased 20% than that of pure WO3 films). The porous surface of Mo-doped WO3 film shortens the diffusion path of Li+. Besides, Mo doping reduces the resistance and improves conductivity. Furthermore, 2at% Mo-doped WO3 films indicate satisfactory energy-storage properties (the specific capacitance is 73.8 F g−1), resulting from the enhanced electrochemical activity and fast electrical conductivity. This work presents a practical and economical way of developing high-performance active materials for bifunctional electrochromic devices.

Abstract:Electrochromic WO3 films with size controlled nanorods were successfully fabricated by a wet chemistry method. The structure and electrochromic properties of tungsten oxide nanorods and films were studied by High resolution transmission electron microscope, Scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods. The average length and diameter of the monodispersed tungsten oxide nanorods increase from 38 x 3.2 nm to 89 x 4.5 nm with help from surfactants. The results show that the electrochromic response time of WO3 nanorod films are strongly dependent on the size of the nanorods. By simply changing the size of the nanorods, the response time of the nanorod films can be regulated nearly by about five times. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy study showed that such trend can be attributed to the size effect of WO3 nanorods upon the dynamics of H ions diffusion. At the same time, all the nanorod films showed good electrochemical stability as there were no significant performance declines after 1000 cycles. The electrochromic modulations of transmittance at 633 nm were around 22%-49%. The above stated results demonstrate that, by controlling the size of WO3 nanorods, the electrochromic properties can be easily adjusted, especially the response time, indicating potential values for different response time required at different occasions. Abstract:Facile fabrication of advanced tungsten oxide (WO3) or WO3 hydrate materials with superior electrochemical and electrochromic properties is of great value in energy-related applications. Self-doping (oxygen vacancy doping) and nanostructure regulation are considered efficient strategies to enhance the performance of bulk WO3 materials. Herein, novel WO3-x hydrate nanosheets were prepared by a one-pot template/surfactant-free solvothermal method employing Na2WO4·2H2O as precursors and ethanol as solvent. The morphology, structure, and composition of the prepared WO3-x hydrate nanosheets were demonstrated by TEM, AFM, XRD, Raman spectrum, and XPS. Furthermore, WO3-x hydrate nanosheets films with mesostructured architecture were formed on FTO glass substrates by the dip-coating process, which exhibited excellent electrochemical and electrochromic performance. As a proof-of-concept example, an analog smart window device (ASWD) was assembled by using the WO3-x hydrate nanosheet film on FTO glass as the working electrode, an FTO glass as the counter electrode, and LiClO4 in propylene carbonate as the electrolyte. The fabricated ASWD presented fascinating electrochromic performance with a wide optical modulation range (82.1%) at the wavelength of 670 nm, moderate switching time (9.6/10.4 s for bleaching/coloration), high coloration efficiency (111.8 cm2/C) and good cyclic stability (maintains 71.6% of the maximum dynamic modulation range after 1000 cycles). Ascribed to the easy preparation process and outstanding electrochromic properties, this kind of WO3-x hydrate nanosheet and its corresponding electrochromic devices are believed to have great potential applications in energy-saving engineering.

Abstract:Metal oxides with reversible optical modulation capability are in the spotlight for smart windows and other emerging optoelectronic devices. Improving the electrochromic performance at a low cost is the only way to popularize their applications. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and versatile strategy to synthesize high-performance electrochromic metal oxides, in which waste carbonated beverages are used as the raw materials for the first time. It can not only reduce the production cost of electrochromic materials, but also alleviate the environmental pollution caused by such liquid waste. With an ingenious carbonization pre-step, both nanoscale pores and oxygen vacancies are created in an annealed tungsten oxide thin film. Multiscale structure optimization endows the self-doped WO3-x films with excellent electrochromic properties such as large transmittance modulation (81.2%), high coloration efficiency (98.7 cm2 C-1) and good cycling stability. DFT calculations show that oxygen vacancies reduce the Li+ ion insertion energy barrier, which is conducive to the interfacial reaction in coloring and bleaching processes. Moreover, this approach is universal to other oxides such as vanadium pentoxide, molybdenum oxide and nickel oxide. The waste-to-value concept paves the way for cost-effective electrochromic materials and sheds light on the multiscale optimization of superior metal oxides.

Abstract:Electrochromism has emerged as a pivotal technology in the pursuit of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, spurring significant research efforts aimed at the creation of advanced electrochromic devices. Most electrochromic materials are used for smart window applications. However, current electrochromic materials have been applied to new energy vehicles, cell phone back covers, AR glasses, and so on. More application scenarios put forward more requirements for the color of the colored states. Choosing the right color change in the application will be the trend in the future. In this work, tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films were prepared by adjusting the in situ heating temperature. WO3 with a crystalline structure showed excellent cyclic stability (5000 cycles), electrochromic performance (ΔT = 77.7% at 633 nm, CE = 37.1 cm2/C), relatively fast bleaching/coloring speed (20.0 s/19.4 s), and the darkest coloring effect (L* = 29.32, a* = 7.41, b* = -22.12 for the colored state). These findings offer valuable insights into the manipulation of smart materials and devices, contributing to the advancement of electrochromic technology.

Abstract:Electrochromic smart devices with controllable optical property are the most promising alternative to traditional windows and curtains. State of the art preparation and commercialization of large-scale electrochromic films are mainly based on vapor phase deposition, but massive application is limited by high price (due to complex preparation process). Here, an all-solution technology is developed for large-area low-cost preparation of electrochromic films. A WO3/ITO dispersion was successfully developed; high electrical conductivity ITO nanoparticle networks along with ITO coating on glass can serve as extended 3-dimensional electrode, which can form microelectrical field and act as the pathways for electron diffusion to WO3 nanorods. In fact, experiment results show that the surface resistance of WO3/ITO nanocomposite film decreased to 32% of the pure WO3. In other words, the optimum WO3/ITO nanocomposite films in this study with "distributed conductive structure" and submicrometer-sized voids morphology have improved the electrochromic properties remarkably. Our optimized WO3/ITO films exhibit higher optical modulation than pristine WO3 (Delta T = 81.7% vs 62.5% at 630 nm) and a faster switching speed (t(b) = 6 s vs 22 s).
Dual-band Electrochromic Film Based on Mesoporous H-Wo3/o-wo3·h2o/r-tio2 for High Performance Smart Windows

Abstract:Porous three-dimensional electrochromic films composed of orthorhombic WO3 center dot H2O, hexagonal WO3, and rutile TiO2 array (h-WO3/o-WO3 center dot H2O/r-TiO2, WWT) were controllably synthesized by a facile two-step hydrothermal technique. Due to the hydrophilicity and array structure of TiO2, the generation of high-quality o-WO3 center dot H2O was significantly promoted, which can reduce the energy barrier to ion diffusion and increase the ion flux by introducing structural water in the interlayer region of WO3. The formation of porous 3-dimensional structure and WO3-TiO2 heterojunction increases the effective contact area, alters the distribution of energy bands, and promotes charge transport, resulting in significantly improved electrochromic properties. An impressive dual -band electrochromic performance with high optical modulation of 68.4% at 633 nm and 59.8% at 1600 nm was achieved in WWT film, respectively, with a fast switching speed (11s/3.3 s at 633 nm and 3 s/9.4 s at 1600 nm for coloring/bleaching), high coloration efficiency (46 cm2 C-1 at 633 nm and 136.8 cm2 C-1 at 1600 nm), and a satisfactory cycling stability at the same time.

Abstract:Electrochromic materials have attracted considerable attention due to their ability to change color reversibly and rapidly under an external electrical stimulus, making them highly promising for use in various applications such as smart windows, displays, and optical memory devices. In particular, tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) thin films have shown excellent electrochromic properties, leading to their wide application in electrochromic devices . In this study, oxygen plasma treatment was used to convert WCl 6 thin film to WO 3 electrochromic thin film on ITO glass substrate. Surface morphology , element composition, phase, optical property, and electrochromic characteristics of WO 3 film are analyzed. It has been proved that the conversion of precursor films is rapid and efficient, the mean roughness and root mean square of amorphous WO 3 thin film are lower than 1.8 nm and 2.2 nm respectively, and the film exhibits good electrochromic performance parameters. The optical modulation range and coloration efficiency of the film can reach 58.5% and 80.2 cm 2 /C before cycle and 56.3% and 84.0 cm 2 /C after 100 cycles, coloration time and bleaching time are within 10 s. The method of plasma treatment avoids annealing and prepare WO 3 film with good and stable performance. This method has the potential to expand to other electrochromic materials, and provides a new solution for the large area preparation and flexible application of electrochromic materials.

Abstract:Zn2+-based electrochromic is a newly born technology in recent years and has attracted the attention of most researchers due to its low cost and high safety. The design of high-performance Zn2+-based electrochromic devices, such as large light modulation and fast color change, is still a challenge. Here, we report the improvement of Zn2+-based electrochromic properties by morphology control, using common electrochromic material WO3 as the research model. The hexagonal WO3 films with shape of nanorods and nanoflakes were prepared by hydrothermal method, where the diameter of the nanorods and the thickness of the nanoflakes are almost the same. The electrochromic characterization of WO3 nanorods and nanoflakes at 550 nm showed that their modulation ranges were 72.4% and 61.0%, their coloration times were 3 and 9 s, their bleaching times were 2.2 and 7 s, and their coloration efficiencies were 67.6 and 53.8 cm(2) C-1, respectively. Compared with WO3 nanoflakes, the excellent Zn2+-based electrochromic properties of WO3 nanorods show rapid electron transfer kinetics caused by large surface area. Furthermore, the prototype electrochromic devices with WO3 nanorods were fabricated, which showed good specific capacitance and excellent electrochromic performance. The fast and large optical modulation synchronous as well as good energy storage makes the electrochromic device become a potential intelligent power supply. This morphology dependent electrochromic work provides a new vision for the construction of high-performance Zn2+- based electrochromic devices.

Abstract:A new method combining the foam formation and heat treatment for preparing the nanocrystalline WO3 powders is presented. The structure and the morphology of the powder have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The nanocrystalline WO3 powder is orthorhombic structured with well-defined crystalline clusters bounded by 30～40 nm nanoparticles. The WO3 film on ITO is prepared by dip-coating method in WO3 suspension in which nanocrystalline WO3 powders are dispersed in distilled-deionised water. The electrochemical measurements show that the WO3 films have a good electrochromic reversibility and fast electrochromic response.

Abstract:Using pure tungsten and titanium as targets,Ti-doped WOx films were deposited on the ITO glass by Reactive Magnetron Sputtering in order to improve the electrochromic properties of WOx films.The electrochromic performances and structure of the films were analyzed by XRD and transmittance spectrum of the films.The influence mechanism of Ti doping on the electrochromic performances and structure of WOx films were studied.As demonstrated in the experiment,the mixed film is still in the amorphous state,and tends to be stronger.The cyclic life span and the ability of color storage can be significantly improved as well as the response time were shorted due to Ti doping.

Abstract:Electrochromic technologies have recently attracted attention due to their energy-saving performance for reducing green gas emissions. The materials design and preparation of electrochromic materials with sufficient microstructure and crystallographic features for suitable ion intercalation/deintercalation are essential for high performance and efficiency. In the present work, nanostructured amorphous tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) films are electrodeposited to enhance electrochromic properties by controlling the pH of electrolytes. Electron microscopy and spectroelectrochemical analysis demonstrate that smaller grain sizes result in larger electrochemical reactive surface areas and shorter ion diffusion lengths. Consequently, the ions efficiently intercalated and deintercalated during the coloring and bleaching states, respectively. In particular, prepared WO 3 films at electrolyte pH 1.4 demonstrate high optical modulation (74.83%) and good transmittance switching speeds (1.56 and 2.06 s during coloring and bleaching, respectively) at 650 nm, as well as comparable coloration efficiency (61.92 cm 2 C −1 at 650 nm).

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) films were prepared on indium–tin oxide (ITO) glass by sol–gel method. The influence of annealing temperature on the structural, morphological, optical, electrochemical, and electrochromic properties has been investigated. The film annealed at 250 °C with an amorphous structure exhibits a noticeable electrochromic performance, such as the highest optical modulation of 58.5 % at 550 nm, high electrochemical stability, and excellent reversibility (Q b/Q c = 96.3 %). An electrochromic (EC) device based on WO3/NiO complementary structure shows improved performance. It exhibits high optical transmittance modulation of 62 % at 550 nm, excellent cycling stability, and relatively fast electrochromic response time (10 s for coloration and 19 s for bleaching).

Abstract:Tungsten oxide thin films were prepared by depositing WO3 onto glass substrates coated with ITO using reactive evaporation process at ambient temperature and 200 degrees C respectively. The thin films were grown at different deposition rate. Chronoamperometry was carried out and spectral measurements were performed in situ. Results showed that the thin films prepared at low deposition rates possess higher coloration efficiency (CE), and the thin films grown at ambient temperature have high CE than those grown at 200 degrees C. The origin of the differences in coloration efficiency of the thin films were analyzed and discussed based on the electrochromic mechanism of amorphous tungsten oxide films. The samples morphology was characterized by atom force microscopy (AFM).

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrate the enhancement of the electrochromic performance of tungsten oxide (WO3) by crystal network topology modification. This is achieved by constructing various crystalline morphologies and patterns of the films. Different mesoscopic crystalline networks of WO3 were acquired on transparent conducting fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) by a crystal-seed-assisted hydrothermal process. The modification of the crystal network topology and crystal growth habit of WO3 films was achieved by adding different concentrations of oxalic acid and HCl, and controlling the growth time. The influence of the topological patterns on the corresponding electrochromic performance of WO3 films was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and in situ reflectance spectroscopy. It follows that four different topological patterns of WO3 microstructures, namely random "rocks" of the seed layers, micro-urchin, small peony, and blooming peony were obtained by adding different concentrations of oxalic acid and hydrochloric acid. It is found that pH and oxalic acid are both the key modifying factors of the habit and topology of the crystal networks. Consequently, the urchin-like pattern gives rise to a high efficiency in optical modulation and coloration due to its similarity to micro-sized antennas, which may facilitate the emission and absorption of charged particles and electrochemical reactions at the WO3 surfaces.

Abstract:The tungsten trioxide monohydrate (WO3 center dot H2O) nanosheets were directly formed on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates without any guidance of seed layer by a novel and quite facile one-step citric acid-assisted hydrothermal method at low temperature (90 degrees C). The WO3 center dot H2O nanosheets possess porous morphologies and good adhesion to the substrates, which would markedly increase the surface area of WO3 center dot H2O and facilitate the ion diffusion during the electrochemical processes. The WO3 center dot H2O nanosheets display superior electrochemical properties of large optical modulation (79.0%), fast switching time (t(c) = 10.1, t(b) = 6.1 s), high areal capacitance (43.30 mF cm(-2)) and excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, bridging electrochromic behavior with energy storage was successfully achieved. Based on the proposed WO3 center dot H2O nanosheets, a smart energy storage electrode was demonstrated, which could monitor the level of stored energy by color changes. The results show great potential of the one-step synthesized WO3 center dot H2O nanosheets for integrated electrochromism and energy storage applications.

This present method allow us readily tune the morphology of WO3 nanostructures. By simply adjusting the constitution of the solution, WO3 nanoparticles (NPs-a), cubic-like nanoparticles (NCs) and another nanoparticles (NPs-b) can be obtained on F doped SnO2 glass substrates. Moreover, these WO3 nanostructures exhibit remarkable photoelectrochemical activities under the light irradiation and the WO3 NCs have the best performance than the others due to the enhanced light absorption ability and increased carrier density.
